"I believe we need to have a quick chat, Shinobu Sensui."
"Hm?"
Sensui turned towards Vergil, body relaxed, as if he believed that Vergil would not pose a threat.
"Only a coward would use a child to further his goals."
Sensui smiled.
"That's where you draw the line? Not at murder, not at the extinction of the Human Race, but at using children?"
He burst into laughter.
Vergil only glared at him, and drew the Yamato.
"You sure are an interesting man, son of Sparda," Sensui said, after calming down. "Amanuma is old enough to make his own decisions. He knows what he's getting into."
"He clearly does not realize the scope of your plans, and we both know it."
"Would you rather spoil his innocence, or let him enjoy having company for the first time in his life? His parents are too busy for him, and he has neither friends nor siblings. Are you saying he should be all alone?"
"I'm saying he shouldn't have to throw away his childhood for our plans," Vergil retorted.
"As if our childhoods weren't cut short. Yours ended rather abruptly as well, didn't it?"
Vergil seethed.
He may have had no regard for humankind. Humans were weak, pitiful creatures. But childhood was sacred. His own childhood was the last time he had ever truly felt content, before his world had abruptly shattered.
And even after that, the innocence of childhood described in William Blake's poems had long since brought him comfort, even if he had nothing of childhood left himself. A verse of Blake's floated through his mind then, and although Blake's poetry generally calmed his temper, recalling his words at that moment only made Vergil angry on Amanuma's behalf.
"How dare you presume such a thing," Vergil growled. "You know nothing of my childhood."
"I know more than you think," Sensui retorted. "I know it made you lose faith in humanity just as mine did."
"That's what you think," Vergil said, "But perhaps…"
He sheathed the Yamato and turned away from Sensui, in an action uncharacteristic of his mood. But, in reality, that was only a part of Vergil's strategy.
He released the Yamato from its Saya with a flick of his thumb, but didn't fully unsheathe it.
"Perhaps it was men like you that made me hate humanity as much as I do now."
He turned around, and lunged at Sensui.
Sensui merely dodged, laughing all the while, as Vergil launched blow after blow at him.
Vergil gritted his teeth. How was this human evading his every move?
Sensui caught his blade, and gave him an eerie grin.
"My turn," he said, catching Vergil in the stomach with an energy charged kick.
Vergil felt blood fill his mouth from the force of the kick, and he skidded backwards, landing awkwardly on his side.
He spit out the glob of blood at the back of his throat and began to stand.
Sensui moved towards him faster than the blink of an eye and landed multiple blows to his back. Vergil hit the floor, and felt his ribs crack and shift as Sensui hit him. But he didn't pay it too much mind. After all, they healed nearly instantaneously, returning back to their normal state.
Through the red hot pain of his bones knitting themselves back together, he grabbed the Yamato and teleported just behind Sensui, putting the Yamato to his throat.
"Is that all you've got?" he taunted.
Sensui just smiled, and then, his body began to glow.
He raised a hand, summoning glowing yellow energy, and gripped Vergil's arm.
Vergil distantly felt himself scream at the holy light of a thousand angels hitting him, stumbling back. He decided, then and there, that that was the true meaning of pain.
And then, he blacked out.
Vergil woke slowly as the sky lightened into dawn, the itchy feeling of damp grass underneath him as it touched his neck.
He took stock of his condition, wincing as the burns on his skin shifted as he sat up.
Burns? He thought absently.
And then he recalled everything.
He had fought Sensui at approximately sunset, and despite Sensui's human nature, the man had merely toyed with him the entire time.
He clenched his fists, cursing his own weakness. How pathetic he must be for letting a mere human defeat him so easily, spirit energy or no spirit energy. And here, he had thought himself strong enough to defeat any human he wished to take on.
How foolish of him.
He stood shakily, noticing the singed state of his coat and the burnt ends of his hair.
He scowled, shoving his hair back into place. He probably barely looked dignified in this state. More like Dante than himself.
Would Dante have lost against Sensui, Vergil wondered, or would he have ended up the same way as him? Vergil liked to imagine that Dante would have ended up even worse for wear than he was, but Dante tended to be unpredictable at best. Maybe he would have gotten lucky, in typical Dante fashion, and managed to evade Vergil's unfortunate loss in some random manner.
Vergil shoved thoughts about Dante out of his mind. He was the last thing Vergil wished to think about at that moment.
There was something he was missing, though. Something that was always with him…
And then, he stilled.
Where was the Yamato?
Vergil cast out his senses, searching for his blade. It was on the island, that much he could tell. But it was too far away for him to be able to discern its exact location.
He would head that way, then, and take it back. By force, if needed.
But then, it dawned on him. Sensui needed the Yamato's power to open the barrier, but knew that Vergil wouldn't cooperate with him. So he had stolen the Yamato, like the underhanded coward he was. And, worse yet, they both know that Vergil was too weak against him to reclaim his blade.
Vergil clenched his teeth.
He would train, he vowed, and the next time he and Shinobu Sensui faced each other, Sensui would die by his blade.
I took some liberties with Sensui's Holy Energy. No idea what it actually does and I haven't watched YYH in a bit so I BSed. Feel free to correct me and I'll edit it.
So you're probably wondering where Kuwabara would come in if Sensui has the Yamato. But did you really think the Yamato would let just anyone use its full power? It didn't even let Nero use all of its abilities, and Nero is Vergil's kid.
Anyway, yeah. Enjoy. Sorry for taking so long, the next chapter took a bit to finish. You're gonna like it though. Trust me.
