Chapter 46 – Summer Daze
In a Viridian City home, a plate of cookies was placed on the table in front of Roman and Rosa. Both reach for and grabbed one, taking a bite. Suddenly, their eyes lit up in wonder at the tasty treats.
"Wow, these are so good!" Roman asked as he took another one. "How is it these are this good?"
"YUMMY!" Rosa said as her eyes gleamed, "Boy, Anabel is going to be upset she had to make that call out back."
"Thank you, and I will be sure to save some for her as well," Summer said before looking to Ruby, who was still nuzzling in a hug with her mother, "Ruby, why don't you have some as well? I also got some fresh Moomoo Milk in the fridge. Cups are in the cabinet to the left."
"Okay," Ruby said as she dashed to the fridge, getting the milk and the cups before setting them on the table. She sat between Rosa and Roman before pouring a glass for herself then, ate one of the cookies, her eyes twinkling in the light, "Just like I remember." She whispered to herself before taking cookie after cookie, eating each one in a single chomp.
"Hey, Red, slow down!" Roman called out, "You aren't eating all of these yourself."
"It's okay, made a lot today." Summer said with a smile, "It's nice to bake for others."
"You're too nice," Rosa responded, "Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Rosa."
"Rosa, that's funny." The white rose woman said, "My last name is Rose, but you can just call me Summer." She then looked to Roman, "And who are you?" Summer then looked to Ruby, "He called you Red, are the two of you friends?"
"Uh, he's…" Ruby said before taking a swig of milk to gain some time to think of a way to explain the situation.
"Your daughter's mentor back in Remnant, I'm an Elite Hunter." Roman continued as Ruby gasped, causing milk to shoot out her nostrils, "She's quite a handful."
"Oh, I see." Summer said in shock, "Ruby, does this mean you're a huntress in training?"
"Yes, I'm a first-year at Beacon on the same team as Yang," Ruby said as she cleaned her face with a napkin.
"Really!?" Summer asked, "How did you skip to her grade level?"
"Well, Ozpin put me in after I-" Ruby was saying until Roman interrupted.
"After we got a little too showy in preventing a robbery in Vale," Roman added.
"That's true." Ruby said on a technical level, "I then did the entrance exam and got partnered with Weiss Schnee."
"A Schnee, one of them went to Vale?" Summer commented.
"Yeah, she's a little cold at the time, but can be super nice when she wants to be." Ruby responded with a smile, "Yang's partner is Blake. She's a Faunus and is also into books like me…Oh, I don't know if I was allowed to tell you she's a Faunus…but she also might not be a Faunus here so…it's complicated." She said with looked at her hands, counting off other people, "I also meet Jaune, Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren. They're in my class as well. Then there's Sun and Neptune, they're from another kingdom. And Penny, she is from Atlas and is a rob…special friend."
"I see, you have made many friends," Summer said as she looked down, "It makes me so happy."
"Oh, and I also made my weapon!" Ruby spoke in glee, "It's called Crescent Rose and it's a sniper that turns into a scythe, like Uncle Qrow's weapon. I think I dropped it when I came to this world, but I can maybe draw what it looks like from mem-" The red hooded trainer was saying until she saw tears pouring down Summer's face, "Mom, what's wrong?"
"I've…I've missed so much of you growing up." Summer said as she tried to dry her tears, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry Ruby."
"It's okay Mom, I'm here now." Ruby said with a smile as Summer did as well, "Maybe we can change the subject for a bit."
"Yeah, enough about Red," Roman responded, causing Ruby to pout, "What about you? What have you been doing since you died in Remnant?"
"Oh, well, I don't remember exactly how I died?" Summer said as she scratched the back of her head, "But, I woke up near here and was lost for a good while. Then, I meet a man who helped me learn about the world I was in." She said with a smile, "He was such a gentleman. We traveled the world as I looked for a way back home…but..." The white rose woman said as she looked at the red-hooded girl, "You see, Ruby, you have a step-brother."
"Yeah, I heard." Ruby responded, "It was a shock at first, but I get it now." She said with a slightly forced smile, "That's when you knew you could not go back even if you could. And Dad…"
"Tai Yang was destroyed when Raven left him. I thought I could help him heal by being there for him and Yang, and eventually you." Summer responded, "But, things did not go as I hoped in my life then." She said before taking a breath, "In my last moments, I hoped that one day my teammates would find a way to be there for each other again. I always knew that was who he truly loved…Did they ever…?" She asked as Ruby solemnly shook her head, "Oh…"
"Yang stepped up not long after you passed away." Ruby spoke, "She told me in our training how we had to move forward to protect everyone in honor of your memory." She said with a smile, "I think she visited your grave as much as I did, and I know she loves you as much as I do." She said as Summer smiled again.
"Okay, messy upbrings aside." Roman commented as he grabbed a cookie, "What happened next?"
"Well, because of his line of work, I had to stay somewhere save to raise our child." Summer responded, "So I lived in Unova for some time."
"Oh, that's my home region!" Rosa spoke, but then had the inquisitive look, "But why would his job make you need to go away?"
"And are you two still together?" Ruby added on.
"Oh, that's a bit complicated to say right now," Summer said as she broke eye contact as she grabbed a cookie to snack on, "But, he is not in the line of work he was in before and had to do some traveling to avoid some repercussions of bad decisions."
"Uh, I don't get it," Ruby commented.
"I do." Roman responded, then smirked at Summer, "But what you're saying now is, you're single." He said before taking a bite of a cookie. At the same time, Ruby stomped on his right foot, causing a cracking sound to be heard, "MMMMM!" Roman recoiled in pain, glaring at the red hooded trainer who sipped her milk.
"No, he and I are still committed to one another, I am sure of it." Summer responded, then giggled, "It is funny, you do remind me of him a lot, but he wears a different kind of hat."
"Oh really," Roman responded.
"What about your son, where is he?" Rosa asked.
"He should be back here any moment now. It's why I was making so many cookies for his return." Summer said while turning back to Ruby, "It may be a bit odd, but he is close to your age now. He's even in the Pokemon World League and has already qualified for entry."
"Wow, I'm in that too!" Ruby responded.
"What are the odds?" Rosa commented, then heard the craw of a Corviknight, "I think another taxi dropped down."
"That must be him, I'll go say hi!" Ruby said as she was about to rush off.
"Wait Ruby-" Summer called out, but her daughter was already out the door, "Oh, I hoped she hadn't gotten that from me." She said to herself before the others followed. However, Roman ran back in to grab the plate of cookies to take with him.
Ruby made her way to the landed Corviknight taxi, seeing the door open. Her breathing was heavy before she saw a person jump. A young boy with red hair ran past the back of his neck as he wore a navy jacket with red lining and blue pants. The red hooded trainer's eyes locked with his, their match silver eyes already telling the other what they knew. Summer then caught up with them, a smile on her face, "Silver, welcome home." She said as Roman, and Rosa caught up as well.
"…" Silver did not say a word before turning back to Ruby, "So, you're her other kid." He said with Ruby glaring back now.
"Wait, he knows about the interdimensional stepsister he has?" Roman whispered to Summer.
"I'm not good at keeping secrets." Summer whispered back, "But he doesn't know about the interdimensional part."
"You're not gonna say hello or anything back to her?" Ruby asked Silver, "Summer is our mother."
"She was your mother first. You want her back; you can have her." Silver said as he walked by, causing Ruby to gasp, "I just came back to get the last of my stuff before the tournament starts up in a couple of months." He said while passing Roman, taking a cookie off the plate without breaking his stride, "Afterwards, I'm leaving and never coming back here." However, before he could take a bite, a hand grabbed his shoulder causing him to drop the cookie on the ground. Silver turned to see it was Ruby the stopped him.
"What did you just say?" Ruby said as her grip tightened, "You shouldn't say things like that about her. So, apologize."
"Ruby, it's alright." Summer called out, "He just-"
"I don't take orders from you." Silver ignored Summer as he focused on Ruby, "Huh, that look in your eyes reminds me of someone else who tried to get me to apologize." He said with a glare, "It didn't happen then, and it's not happening now."
"You-" Ruby said as her other fist tightened.
"Ruby, don't!" Rosa said before seeing Roman walking past, having just passed the plate to her, "Eh?"
"Hey, Silver, was it?" Roman said as the two kids turned to him, seeing him knelt to pick up the cookie, "You dropped this?" he said as he offered the cookie back, "Go on, it's been less than five seconds."
"Are you insane, I'm not eating that now." Silver responded, "If you want it, you can ha-" he was saying until Roman jammed the cookie into the silver-eyed boy's mouth, "HMMM!" he spoke in a muffled voice as the others gasped.
"I insist, they're really good." Roman said before pulling his hand back, causing Silver to cough up crumble, "There, you got most of it done. Now, go in and have some milk."
"You bastard!" Silver said as he readied a Pokeball, "I'll make you pay for that?"
"Oh, a Pokemon battle." Roman said before patting Ruby on the back, "In that case, Red, you take this one." He said before walking back to the others.
"What?" Ruby responded.
"What!? No, face me now, coward!" Silver shouted back, but Roman ignored him, "Tsk."
"Roman…" Ruby said to herself as she looked at the orange-haired criminal, then looked back to Silver, "Yeah, let's have a Pokemon battle." She said as he turned back to her, "I'm in the World League as well, so this can be practice for both of us."
"Heh, you think you can make it to the league." Silver commented, "How many badges to have for it, one or two?"
"Try three." Rosa responded, "Kick his butt, Ruby!"
"Three, so you still have one left." Silver said before glancing at Summer, then looked back to Ruby, "Okay, we can have a match." He said before grinning, "I can humiliate you before your own mother's eyes."
"Summer is our mother," Ruby responded as she took out a Pokeball.
"Please, does it have to be this way?" Summer asked.
"Yes, let the kids fight it out." Roman commented, "The Pokemon will at least know how to hold back at this time." He said before looking back to Sliver, "At least I hope so with that one's."
"…Fine," Summer agreed, "But let's not do it out here. I can get the Gym set up for your battle." She said before leading the way to the largest building in town, opening the door with a key. However, the inside was almost pitch black, "I closed it for today, so I need to set up all the lights." She then turned to Roman, "Can you help me?"
"Sure," Roman said before hearing a snickering behind him.
"Hehehehe, I wonder if she picks you because you look like a candle in the dark," Rosa commented.
"Huh, I think I see another dropped cookie." Roman commented, looking at a pile of dirt or something else brown in the ground, "Wanna try it?"
"Nope, I'm heading to the stands, see ya!" Rosa said before moving off.
Roman followed Summer as they walked through the back tunnel of the gym. They eventually reached the breaker room, flipping the switches to turn on the lights. However, the white rose woman sighed before turning to Roman, "I apologies for Silver's attitude."
"He's in that phase, I get it." Roman responded, "You never raised a kid when they got that old."
"It's a lot different than leading a team." Summer said with a half-smile, "…You're not a hunter, are you?"
"Heh, I knew I couldn't bluff that." Roman responded, "Not with these looks." He said with his hand in his pockets, "You did say I resemble your husband, so I bet I can guess what his real profession was as well."
Summer then reached near her neck, pulling out a silver locket. She walked over to Roman and opened it, showing an old photo of her and a man in a black suit wearing a fedora, "His name is Giovanni." She said before closing the pendant, "He did do some bad things before, but I know part of him is fighting to change for the better now."
"Do you believe that, or just want to believe it?" Roman asked, but Summer did not respond, causing him to sigh, "Forget it, not my place to judge." He said before turning around, "Let's head back to watch your kids settle this."
"…I didn't want Ruby to be a huntress." Summer said as Roman stopped, "I wanted her to grow with a normal life and peaceful death." She said as her hands were shaking, "But as a huntress, you fight every battle knowing it could be your last or the last one for your friends." She said as tears formed in her eyes, "I never wanted that to happen to her."
"..." Roman waited before responding, "Kids will do whatever they want at times. They'll latch onto something, and if they're stubborn enough, you can't pull them off it as they try to get better at it." He then sighed, "As much as I hate to say it, Red is good at being stubborn. I can tell, she doesn't regret the life she picked in Remnant." The orange-haired criminal turned back to the white rose woman, "Only that she never got to show you what she accomplished until now."
Summer gasped before having a small smile form, "I see, thank you." She said drying her tears.
"Don't mention it," Roman responded, "Literally, I don't want Red hearing this and holding over my head."
"Hehehehe, deal." Summer said with a slight chuckle, "I'm grateful she had someone looking out for her while here."
"I like to think of me as her foil," Roman responded with a smirk.
"In that case, play that role to the end of your journeys." Summer said as she walked up to Roman, "However, if you hurt her, or my son again, or anyone we hold dear." She said as walked past with an aura of pressure that caused Roman to panic, "The only way you will be able to eat cookies again is through a straw." She said as her silver eyes had a piercing gaze that squired the soul of the orange-haired criminal. It was a look he felt like it could make any Grimm freeze in terror at the sight alone. However, Summer followed it up with a soft smile and closed eyes, "Okay?"
"Y-yes ma'am," Roman responded as Summer nodded, walking out of the breaker room. He took a few seconds to catch his breath, then had a smirk on his face, "Man, if only she was single." He thought before following, "Or at least not married to a mobster."
In the now lit-up arena, Silver stood on the left as Ruby was on the right. Rosa was in the front stands as Summer and Roman walked up to sit beside her, "We'll make it a five-on-five match," Silver said as he took out a Pokeball, "No need for me to show you my whole team before the tournament."
"Fine by me," Ruby responded as she readied her first Pokeball as well.
The two then tossed out their first Pokemon, starting the match of sister against brother.
AN: There you go, a sibling rivalry in the making right here. Summer was a lot of fun to make here and explain her life after death in Remnant. I hope people like her more than the version of Nickolas I did for this series. The parts with her and Ruby saying all she has done so far really tugged at my heartstrings. We also get the return of Silver, revealed to be Summer's son, which also makes Giovanni Summer's new husband, (roses go well with criminals in this fanfic I guess). He comes back as his arrogant self again, but Roman does what Roman does best, being the more arrogant one in the room, (side note, I have been watching Golden Kamuy, and the lead Sugimoto is very similar in tone to Roman for me. They even both have a pintsized companion on their journey). Now, Ruby and Silver are set up for a big match next chapter as they prepare to test each other's skills. That is all for now, thanks for reading, and hope to see you in the next chapter.
