Summary: When nurse Caroline Forbes is hired by Elijah Mikaelson to take care of his younger brother with a terminal illness, Klaus, she didn't expect to fall in love with the charismatic blonde.

A: I don't own TVDU or any character. Sorry, my english isn't good.

"I can't believe I agree into letting you do this." Kol said, staring into the mirror.

"Davina will love you."

Klaus laughed, the first real laugh in a while…maybe letting Nik do his hair wasn't such a bad idea after all. But still, Kol now had light brown locks with a sun-blonde tinge, and at one point he felt like killing his brother.

"Please tell me it's temporary."

"Yes, they go after three washes." Klaus says nonchalantly, kissing Kol on the forehead and laughing some more. "So, tell me, Kol, how's college? Except for the party you're going to drag Davina to this Tuesday."

Kol froze for a few seconds, then said:

"You...you know about that?"

"Of course. I'm dying, do you think I have anything better to do? But don't worry…I'm not telling anyone…you need to enjoy your health and youth, baby brother."

"Health"...what Klaus used to have too...he turned his gaze to the window and looked out the window, towards the road behind the trees in their garden...the dying man in the hilltop mansion. But still, he was feeling better these days, he had taken a breath of air, the massage had been good, although Aurora had called him a little too…caring, 24 hours after their session to ask how he was doing.

"Now, you're done, and you look handsome, Kol. That...little witch will love you."

"Thanks, Nik. Hey...do you wanna watch an movie together or something? Before I leave for my trip? I haven't done this in a while, it would be nice to spend some time just the two of us."

"Sure, Kol. What movie do you have in mind?" Klaus asked, snuggling with Kol between the blankets and handing him the remote.

"Niklaus, wake up. Nik...? Nik, your meds...?" Elijah shook Klaus. He was a little dizzy, but that's usually what happened after he woke up.

"Lijah?"

Elijah nodded fondly, looking up at Klaus' wide eyes and bright face. Caroline was downstairs, Elijah was about to go out on his date with Antoinette, and Kol was already gone. Somehow Niklaus always managed to fall asleep extremely quickly when he was around Kol. The bowl of popcorn the brothers had been eating from was now empty, but Klaus' fingers were full of butter.

"Alright, come, now you only have your pills." Elijah said, preparing a glass of water for Klaus, who took it with greasy hands. "Do you want me to help you to the bathroom to wash your hands?"

Klaus nodded slightly so his older brother picked him up bridal style, still covered in the blanket, and placed his head on his chest. Despite the fact that Klaus' health was getting worse and he was getting weaker and weaker, Elijah was the only person he would let carry him like this. Elijah carried him from the bathroom back, rocking him a little in the process.

"Do you want me to play you a quick lullaby before I go? Maybe you'll be able to fall back asleep..."

"Aha…" Klaus said in a small voice, content to let Elijah stroke his forehead, gently easing his headache away.

So the brunette started singing to him, like he used to when they were kids, in an attempt to get Nik to stop crying after Mikael abused him. He hums a lullaby about the stars, the moon, the sun, wolves, and love, until Klaus' body relaxed and, after much longer than he anticipated, he falled asleep. In just a few minutes, Elijah handed him over to Caroline's watchful eye.

Elijah had to be excited, right? Antoinette wasn't horrible, and he thought she really liked him...but why didn't he feel the same way about her? He bumped into Katherine again yesterday, she had asked him about Niklaus and given him the numbers of some of her cousin's friends who worked at a major hospital in London, the same hospital their mother's sister Dahlia worked at. Katherine barely spoke to her cousin, well, sister basically...their family was more complicated than Elijah's at times, but still.

"I'll be home by 4 pm, call me if anything happens." Elijah told Caroline fondly, kissing Klaus' head.

"Have fun, Elijah. Do you like her?"

"Yes, yes, of course, she's a very good co-worker."

"No, I mean, you're going on a date with her, do you like her?"

"I...I don't believe in love, Caroline...no in love outside the family."

Not since Katerina, no one could be Katerina. But Katerina was family. Like Caroline.

Some time after Elijah left, Klaus woke up. A new record, almost a full hour of steady sleep.

"Good morning, my love." he said, as Caroline kissed his lips.

He was fine, pale, skinny, dizzy, but fine.

"How do you feel today? Let's check your vitals."

"Later, now come here." Klaus said, making room for Caroline on the bed. "Let's cuddle."

Caroline laughed, but quickly took Klaus's temperature, and then lay down on the bed with her in his arms.

"I'll check them anyway later." Caroline said slyly. Klaus kissed her on the nose.

"I Love you, Caroline, you know that...? I want to live...but I don't want to live without you, I know you're the love of my life. You made me have hope, something I believed that I lost a long time ago."

"I love you too. You have no idea how much." the blonde woman replied, kissing Klaus on the lips and placing her head back on his chest. "But, Klaus...I need to tell you something." Caroline smiled at Klaus, showing him that everything was ok, then she said: "Next week I'm going to Mystic Falls, my hometown, I promised my mom I'd help planning a local celebration...I already told Elijah. But...my ex is gonna be there, so I thought..."

"Your ex?"

"Tyler. He cheated on me with one of my classmates. It's alright, he was immature and I'm over it, but the thought of him being there, with my ex-best friend...I guess Kol told you, didn't he? You tell each other everything, and he knows I'd trust you with my life..."

"Yes...Caroline?" Klaus said, lifting her chin and looking directly into her eyes. "It's ok, it'll be ok, don't worry, life's too short to stress over that stupid guy...because if he didn't realize how wonderful you are, he's definitely stupid..." he took a break. "Trust me, you're gonna get there and you're gonna show them how incredible you are, you're gonna show them what a powerful, confident, intelligent woman you are, love, because that's what you are...who would anyone else have the guts to beat Rebekah at chess?"

Caroline laughed. She loved him, there was no doubt. Still...she couldn't stop thinking about her upcoming trip to Mystic Falls...Tyler...Elena...something wasn't right.

Antoinette had been talking for forty minutes, and while Elijah would normally have been glad to get to know her better, he couldn't stop thinking about what Caroline had told him. However, when Antoinette finished her story, the date had not gone as badly as he had expected it to, she had even made him laugh a few times...

"Come on, let's dance." Antoinette told him after they finished eating, pulling him onto the dance floor with her.

They had danced for hours, just the two of them, ignoring anyone else... it was like they were the last people on Earth... It wasn't love, but at least there was the feeling of acceptance. He was spinning it around the ring, smiling, remembering an old ballad. The Mikaelson man danced so much with her, caught in a trance, that he'd lost the track of time, and when they finally sat down at the table and Elijah checked his phone, he froze.

He had 20 missed calls from Caroline and 157 texts.

"Klaus passed out. I'm with him at the hospital"

Now, he felt like he couldn't breathe.
