The Brawling Yokai of Gensokyo Ch 2
Dan Kuso and Drago were stunned to see that they were in a different dimension that they didn't recognize. One moment they were on a boat, sailing to wherever, the next thing they knew, a weird portal with eyes swallowed them up and landed them here. The strangest part is that Dan was seated at a table in front of a well elegant woman.
The woman in front of them held up a tea cup.
"Tea?" She asked calmly.
"...Sure." Dan said, narrowing his eyes at the woman.
"Ran! Help our guests."
Suddenly, a very tall woman appeared between them, which startled Dan not only because she appeared out of nowhere, but because of her appearance. R
Ran has yellow eyes, short blonde hair, and nine fox tails. She wears a white dress with purple cuffs and collar, an indigo tabard with a white print, white and blue footwear, and a light pink two-tailed hat with many amulets that hide her fox ears.
She was holding a kettle and poured to Dan's cup, then Yukari's cup.
"Thank you Ran."
Ran bowed down. "Your welcome Yukari-sama." And Ran dissapeared.
Yukari brought the tea to her mouth and sipped it casually. Dan did the same. Yukari put down her tea and stared at Dan and Drago and smiled.
"Judging by the looks on your faces, you probably have questions am I correct?"
Dan put down his tea and pointed to Yukari.
"Yeah I have some questions! First of all, what is this place?! Second of all, what was it that dragged us here?! Third of all...What is the recipe for this tea because it tastes amazing!"
Yukari chuckled lightly. "Glad to know you like it. I wanted to put you at ease before revealing the surprise Dan Kuso."
Dan's eyes widen while Drago looked confused.
"How did..."
"I know his name even though he never mentioned it? I know a lot of things Dragonoid or should I say Drago, the heroic Bakugan and his heroic human partner, who saved the Earth, New Vestrioa, and Gundalia multiple times."
Drago was silent at what Yukari said.
"Are you some kind of super fan or something?...That lives in this weird dimension?"
Yukari twirled her hair. "Something like that, but where are my manners! I realized I haven't introduced my selves. After all, first impressions are everything!"
Yukari snapped her fingers as the table suddenly was engulfed by some kind of portal. So we're the chairs, leaving Dan to stand.
"My name is Yukari Yakumo, I'm a being who watches over everything."
Dan tilted his head in confusion.
"Have you ever gotten that feeling that somewhere, someone you don't know, is constantly watching not just you, but everybody you know?...That's me!" Yukari winked. She then snapped her fingers and a bunch of portals opened up around Dan.
Both Drago and Dan where shocked to see that the portals had views of the people of the Earth, and it wasn't just the Earth, New Vestroia too, be it the people of New Vestroia and the Bakugan there, the same thing for Gundalia.
"That's...Impossible. How are you able to do this? You're not even a Bakugan." Drago stated.
"Correct. I'm what you call a Yokai!"
Dan looked puzzled. "Wait. Yokai? As in special types of ghosts in Japan? I thought they were a myth?"
Yukari wagged her finger. "Nope! They're real all right. Vampires, Ghosts, Phantoms, Witches, and so much more."
"Wait! Those portals...You brought us here for a reason didn't you?" Drago questioned.
"First of all, they're called gaps. And second of all, yes, the reason why I brought both of you here is because I want to offer you both a proposition."
All the portals vanished as one big portal opened up, giving Dan and Drago a view of some type of land surrounded by some barrier.
"That is Genosokyo, also known as the Land of Illusions."
"Why is it surrounded by a barrier?" Dan questioned.
"That is the Hakurei Border, it is the very thing that is separating Gensokyo from your world."
"So in other words, the human world outside of the barrier don't know Gensokyo exists." Drago deduced.
"That is true, what's keeping the humans from breaching Gensokyo from the outside and the inside is the Hakurei Border. Almost no one can leave the border...Except me of course. The point I'm trying to make here is that I want both of you to become residents of Gensokyo."
Dan stared at her for a moment, trying to process what she asked them.
"So let me get this straight, you brought us to your weird eye dimension out of the blue, you claim that you know who we are, and now you're asking us to live in a place that no even most of humanity knows about?"
Yukari took in everything Dan said.
"Well..When you put it that way I-"
"Of course we'll come to Genosokyo!"
Drago turned to his partner shocked. "Dan! Don't you think you're rushing this decision?! We don't know anything about Yukari Yakumo! Or her abilities in general. Don't you think she's suspicious."
Dan sighs. "Look Drago, if she wanted to put us in danger, she would've done so by now. But I don't feel any ill will against her. Plus, think of it as an extended vacation after everything we've been through. Nobody needs us anymore, our role as Battle Brawlers are over. Let's use this time to finally take a breather."
Drago turned to Yukari who was smiling at him. 'On the one hand, I barely know anything about Yukari Yakumo. I feel there's more than she is leading on. If she has been aware of everything we've done in the past, how come she never came to interact with us until this very moment...And now that I think about it, if she has been able to see everything...Could she have possibly helped us with the many threats we faced over the years...Could she have prevented the many deaths involved?...Could she have saved her?...On the other hand, Dan is right saying that she could've attacked as soon as we entered this domain. And her presence doesn't seem threatening...For now. I'll play her little game for the moment.'
"...Okay Dan, let's do it. Let's go to Genosokyo." Drago told Dan.
Dan grinned. "Awesome! The two of us going on a vacation!" Dan quickly turn to Yukari.
"Question, do I have to bring my luggage?"
Yukari shook her head. "No need." Yukari snapped her fingers and a gap swallowed Dan and Drago before they could register what happened.
"I'm surprised the Bakugan didn't ask anymore questions." Yukari turned to Ran.
"Me too. If I'm being honest, I was panicking a little at the questions he was going to interrogate me for."
"Does that include not lending a hand to the Battle Brawlers for 7 years?"
"...Yes."
"And what would happen if they were to ask you that question?"
Yukari sighs as she opens her fan. "...I would have to tell the truth. I don't know the reaction of Dan Kuso, but I know the Dragonoid will be beyond furious after what I have to say."
"So how come you didn't tell them what will happen when they reach Gensokyo?"
Yukari showed Ran her mischievous smile. "Let's just say the surprise will eMERGe."
Present Day
Scarlet Devil Mansion Library
"What?! You mean to tell me that there's nothing about a yokai using abilities that aren't magic?!"
Remilia shouted.
"Please Remilia, there's no need to yell."
She has hair and eyes that are purple, and has many ribbons tied to her hair and other parts of her clothing. She wears pink pajama-like clothing and a night-cap with a gold crescent moon on it.
"You don't get Patchouli! A yokai was able to defeat my baby sister and toy with Sakuya! And we both now how strong they are." Remilia expressed her concerns.
Patchouli closed the book she was reading and turned to her friend. "It does sound interesting that there is a yokai who can not only use spacial manipulation like the infamous Yukari Yakumo, but time as well? And here I thought only Sakuya was the only person in Genoskyo that can manipulate time." Patchouli said.
Remilia points an accusing finger to the witch. "Wrong! It means that this Dan Kuso is a threat to me if he is getting in the way of my plans! I should go ahead and kill him right now!"
Patchouli sighs. "Or, and please listen to me on this. You get him to join your cause."
Remilia tilts her head in confusion.
Patchouli shakes her head. "It's like you told me, a yokai who doesn't use magic but can manipulate time and space sounds like a powerful ally to have. Not to mention, I could learn more about this Dan Kuso individual. Maybe I can even write a book about him! Koakuma!"
An individual ran to the witch holding several books. She wears a black dress with white sleeves. She has a small pair of black, bat-like wings on the sides of her head and long red hair.
"Yes Ms. Knowledge?"
"I'm going to need your help creating a new book. The title of the book will be called, 'Dan Kuso, The Magicless Yokai of Gensokyo'! So I'm going to need you to print out 200 pages by the end of the day understood?"
Koakuma face paled at the demand but couldn't say no because she feared Patcholui's wrath and Remilia Scarlet's wrath even more.
"Yes Ms. Knowledge."
"Good. Now hop to it. Oh. And make sure you put those books back in the proper places you found them. I'll know if they have been misplaced." Patchouli sang.
Koakuma sighs and walks away from the two.
"You know what? Your right Pache! I'm going to see if I can recruit Dan Kuso to my noble cause and should he refuse..."
Remilia's eyes glowed as she smiles darkly.
"I have ways to make him reconsider."
Human Village
"DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOU HAVE DOOMED US ALL?!" Reimu shouted at Dan.
"Look, I just did what I believed was right."
"Right...Because holding the enemy's sister hostage and letting a person who can kill us when we sleep is definitely the right thing to do!" Reimu shot back with sarcasm.
"You need to calm down. You think I didn't take those into consideration? Of course I did. Look up."
"What do you mean lo-IS THAT A BARRIER?!" Reimu's eyes widen and so did Marisa when she looked up too. A yellow barrier surrounded the village Flandre ravaged.
Dan smirks. "Yep. Cast that baby as soon as finished my battle with Flandre. That barrier will protect us from Remilia. I doubt she'll have anything to break it through."
Marisa stared at Dan impressed.
"What else can you do?!"
Dan placed a hand on his gem.
"Glad you asked."
The gem on Dan's neck glowed as a wave of colorful energy passed through both Marissa and Reimu. They turned to where the wave was heading.
To both of their surprises, the damage and wreck caused by Flandre was slowing being undone as pieces of brick, debris, glass, and materials were being put back together. It took a minute but the village looked good as new.
"Is that even possible?..." Reimu was stunned at what Dan just done. Through out her life, she has never seen magic used to this degree before, and by a yokai no less!
Though Marisa was just to excited by Dan's magic.
"YOUR SO COOL!" Marisa exclaimed.
Dan smiled. "I know. Now we need to deal with her." Dan points to Flandre who's frozen.
Marisa smiles nervously. "Dan, what are you thinking?"
"I unfreeze her and-"
"ABSOLUTELY NOT!" Reimu interrupted.
"SHE IS TOO DANGEROUS TO BE FREE!"
"Y-Yeah. She almost killed me Dan and she probably killed a few people before you stopped her. I think it's safer if she remained frozen." Marisa added.
Reimu huffs as she crossed her arms. "Exactly, which is why its important that Flandre shouldn't be thawed out otherwise...What's that sound?"
Reimu heard sizzling noises. Both teens turned to Dan and the frozen Flandre. Dan had placed a card on the frozen ice and whatever it did was melting the ice.
"AGHHHHHH!/ARE YOU CRAZY!?" Screamed Marisa and Reimu.
The ice managed to melt. Releasing the winged vampire from her frozen prison. Flandre's head hung low as her body swayed.
Reimu sweats nervously as Marisa hides behind her.
"Okay, not a problem, it seems she's in a dazed state. If we work together, maybe we can-"
"Uhhh...Is it morning?...Or night?...Wait a minute, I don't know what time it is, I'll just ask someone."
Flandre slowly lifts her head.
"Do you know what the-" Flandre stops talking when her eyes met Dan.
"YOU!" She points a Dan.
"Now I remember! You cheated! You froze me! How could you do that to such an innocent little girl?!" Flandre cried out.
"Innocent?! You cut me so that you could drink from my blood!" Marisa accused.
Flandre tilted her head to Marisa. Who physically paled at Flandre's gaze.
"Your the weakling I almost killed."
'Weakling?!' Marisa gawked.
Flandre turns to Reimu.
"I don't know you."
"My name is Reimu Hakurei and I don't take kindly to intruders who dare commit sinful actions."
"Fufufufu...And you think you can take me on?"
Flandre took a few steps forward as Reimu readied herself.
"HOLD ON!"
Dan got in the middle.
"Before we do anything rash, let's talk!"
"And why would I want to talk with a cheater like you?" Flandre asked.
"Because I unfroze you?"
"Okay! I'll listen!"
Flandre stated as she sat down on her knees.
Dan just sweat drops.
"Okay...After I froze you, a maid named Sakuya Izayoi came into my dimension, demanding your release."
"Sakuya came to rescue me? Ahh! I like Sakuya. She's the best maid ever. She always gives me these wonderful pastries made of human parts!"
That made Marisa turn green with disgust.
"Now that I think about it, how did you survive Sakuya, cause she is so strong. Not as strong as me though! But still strong nevertheless."
"Made it so that her time manipulation was useless in my dimension."
"Oh! Smart! Very smart!" Flandre praised.
"Then I released her. Now it's obvious that Sakuya must've made it back to the mansion and told Remilia what happened. And if I was a betting man, most likely Remilia is coming here as we speak."
"WHAT?!" Both Marisa and Flandre exclaimed.
For Marisa, the thought that someone even stronger than Flandre terrified her. I mean just looked how strong Remilia's little sister is!
"My older sister...Is coming here?"
Flandre appeared in front of Dan as she wrapped her arms around his body.
"Woah. Are you alright?"
"Remilia...Hates failure. Knowing her, she is already mad that I failed my job...I don't want to face her..."
Dan saw that Flandre was visibly shaking.
'What has she done to her?' Already not liking Remilia.
"Don't worry Flandre, I promise that I won't let Remilia lay a hand on you."
Flandre looked up to Dan.
"You promise?"
Dan smiled. "Of course...Better yet..."
Dan closed his fingers except for his pinkie.
"Let's do a pinkie promise."
"Ooooo...What's a pinkie promise?"
"A pinkie promise is like a special promise made by people with special bonds. It means that neither of us can go back on a promise."
"Wow Dan...You're so wise!" Flandre stated.
Reimu sweat drops.
'Seriously?'
"Okay Dan! If your making a promise, then I will as well! I promise to protect my new friend no matter what!"
"HEY! WHAT ABOUT US!?" Marisa exclaimed.
"You two don't count as friends." Flandre bluntly states.
'I think I have my work cut out for me.' Dan thought.
Flandre turned to Dan with a huge smile on her face.
"Pinkie promise!"
Flandre put out her pinkie finger and Dan did the same. Both of them crossed their fingers together.
Flandre blushed upon that.
"Dan...Is this what it feels like to have a friend?"
"...I know that this is obvious but have you ever left your mansion?"
"...Not until today."
Dan shook his head.
"Then it's decided...You are staying here with us."
"WHAT?!" Reimu once again was surprised by the dragon looking yokai.
"Dan Kuso! I hope you haven't forgotten what that vampire did to this village?" Reimu points to Dan.
The former brawler smirked at her.
"Of course not. Which is why Flandre Scarlet will be under my vision 24/7."
"Bu-"
"I hope you haven't forgotten who beaten Flandre. And I doubt you could've beaten her, it would've amounted to your loss."
Reimu grits her teeth in anger.
'Just who the hell does he think he is?! Just because he beat her doesn't mean he's strong! I'm going to wipe off that smirk off his face!'
"DAN KUSO! I WON'T ACCEPT THIS! WHICH IS WHY I CHALLENGE YOU TO A BATTLE!" Reimu declared.
"Reimu!" Marisa was surprised her best friend would fight the very man who saved her life.
Dan reached into his pocket to pull out what appeared to be a pipe for smoking.
He put the item near his mouth.
He blew out some fire and the pipe blew out smoke.
"Ahhh..."
Reimu had a tick mark.
"ARE YOU SERIOUSLY SMOKING?!"
"Yes, it really does good for the lungs, anyway I accept your challenge."
"Very well, but we should move to somewhere where there aren't people."
"Agree."
Dan pulled out a card and the card glowed red.
"Oh! You're doing it again!" Flandre stated as the bright light engulfed the four.
Reimu opened her eyes to see that she wasn't in the village.
"AHHH! WHERE ARE WE?!" Marisa screamed as she was dealing with the fact she was in some type of dimension.
'No way...This is like the inside of Yukari's dimension, but its different, though I can't explain why.'
"Welcome to my humble abode!"
Dan greeted them.
"Marisa and Flandre, you two can go ahead and sit this one out."
"Beat her ass Dan!" Flandre cheered.
Which Dan sweat drops.
"You may have the field advantage, but don't get cocky. You're a Yokai, my job is to exterminate evil yokai! As a shrine maiden, I Reimu Hakurei will defeat you!"
'...Ain't somebody stuck up?'
'What are you going to do?'
'I'm just going to humble her a little...'
'...I don't like how you worded that sentence.'
'Relax, I'm not going to hurt her...That much.'
'See that concerns me even more.'
"Okay! Let's begin."
A red aura surronds Reimu.
"Dream Land Super Duplex Barrier!"
Dan was surrounded by a doubled layerd barrier.
"Huh, now doesn't this look fun?"
Paper seals were being sent through parts of the barrier to hit them.
Reimu smirks.
"Yokais are spiritual beings, meaning that they are weak to faith-based attacks. Not to mention that seals are one of their weaknesses. Even if he managed to survived that attack, there's no way for him to leave that barrier!"
"Man that would be scary, most yokai would have trouble."
Reimu's eyes shrank as he heard Dan's voice.
Behind her, Dan was standing in the opposite of her direction smoking.
"Unfortunately for you, I'm not like most yokai you faced."
Reimu jumped away from Dan and turned to him.
"How did..."
The sound of glass shattering alerted Reimu as she turned to the barrier she casted was no longer there.
"You...Broke the barrier...How?"
Dan turned to Reimu.
"Simple, your barrier was weak. It was very easy for me to power through."
This information managed to frustrate the already ticked off Reimu.
"Since you had you had your fun, it's now my turn." Dan smiled as he snapped his fingers.
Under her feet, the floor glowed yellow.
"What the-"
A rumble made its way through the void.
Reimu jumped out of the way in time as thunder struck the ground she stood.
"Wow, you have good reflexes...However, I'm not done yet."
As soon as he said that, the floor under her glowed yellow again.
Reimu once again barely dodges the thunder bolt. Of course when she stepped on the ground, another trap activates for her, resulting her almost being fried again.
'Damn it, did he plan these traps in the beginning?! Doesn't matter as long as I move out of the way in time, I'm sure I'll find an opening an-' "Huh? Why can't I move?"
She looked down to see that she was standing in mud. She tried to lift herself, but all it did was sink her feet deeper.
"I'm disappointed Reimu. You should've been aware of the possibility that not all of my traps were made to attack you."
"Damn it! Those attacks were made to distract me! Your real goal was to have me trapped! I was careless!"
"You are fast, I'll give you that. But let's see if you're fast enough to avoid this!"
Dan inhaled as he was charging fire in his mouth.
He then shot out a large fireball bigger than Reimu itself as it was heading to her.
The frozen Shrine Maiden couldn't help but stare at her coming down.
The fireball managed to hit Reimu, causing a semi-large explosion.
"REIMU!" Marisa cried out.
She was hoping that this fight wouldn't turn extreme, but she was proven wrong.
"Relax Marisa. I made sure my attacks aren't life threatening! I'll heal her at the end of the battle."
From the smoke, seals shot out and were heading to Dan.
"What the-"
Before could make a move, the seals were now attached to his body.
"Got you."
Dan turned around to see Reimu smiling.
"REIMU?! BUT HOW!?" Marisa said shocked.
"Dan was fighting a fake this whole time." Flandre answered.
"...I see, you knew I would've broken out of your barrier with ease. The real goal was to duplicate yourself with a clone." Dan deduced.
"Your quick. That is the truth. Even though you're a yokai, I knew there was a possibility that you would've broken out of the barrier I placed on you, which is why I cast a spell to make a clone of me made with seals. To get you close enough to weaken you!" Reimu explained.
"I have to say, I'm impressed. However you made one small mistake."
"And that is?"
"You assumed I'm like any other yokai."
The seals on Dan's body combusted into flames.
Reimu's eyes shrank and so does Marisa's.
"But...That's impossible...A yokai is weak to seals..."
Dan wagged his finger.
"Silly little Reimu. I didn't spend 100 years in Genoskyo sightseeing, lazing around on my ass, and eating delicious delicacies, though that does sound fun. I spend all this time training. That includes covering my weaknesses with being a yokai."
"But...For that to be possible, you would have to be constantly hit by faith-based attacks daily!"
"Bingo! We have a winner!"
This wasn't happening right now! She had exterminated plenty of yokai before! Even higher yokais, apart from Yukari cause she knows fighting her is a bad idea, are killed with stronger faith-based attacks! And yet here this man completely throws logic out the window!
Reimu backed away from Dan as she started floating in the air.
'It's obvious seals don't work on him. That means the only way to beat him is to trap him and hit him with everything I got. Dan may have the field advantage, but I have a hunch that he's still underestimating me.'
"What are you thinking about?"
Reimu turned to Dan who had a grin on his face. She immediately got on the defense as she flew around him so fast that it looked like there were multiple Reimus.
"Divine Art! Demon Binding Ring!"
Reimu exclaimed as seals appeared and formed a small ring around Dan.
"I believe I've explained that seals don't work on me Reimu."
When Dan reached to touch one of the seals, electricity arced through his hand.
"What the...?"
"These seals weren't meant for weakening you, they were for trapping you!"
Dan then noticed the seals trapping him were glowing with red energy.
It was revealed to be large red bullets aimed at him.
"Let's see you escape this!"
"Who said I needed to escape?" Dan stated.
As he materialized six cards in front of him. The cards glowed yellow as they transformed into 6 giant mirrors that circled Dan.
When the bullets were fired, they hit the mirrors, only for them to bounce back and shot through the seals, destroying the ring surrounding Dan.
Reimu only had time to look before she was hit with one of her attacks, sending her falling to the ground.
Reimu slowly lifts herself up on one knee as she slams her fist to the ground.
'Damn it! I didn't think he could do that!'
Dan lands on the ground and walks to Reimu.
"You know, we can call it a day. I don't want to hurt that badly."
Reimu sneers at this and stood up right. Glaring at Dan.
Two ying yang orbs appeared behind her. Her hands glowed.
"DON'T UNDERESTIMATE ME!" Reimu screamed as she charged at Dan.
She was trying to hit Dan, but the dragon yokai proved to be too fast as she missed each strike aiming at him.
Dan then wrapped his tail around Reimu's legs, causing her to trip. Landing face fist on the ground.
'...You thought that was funny didn't you?' Drago questioned.
'...A little.' Dan answered.
Dan lets go of Reimu as the Shrine Maidne picks herself up and glares hard at Dan.
"THAT'S IT! I'M ENDING THIS FIGHT NOW!"
Reimu floats away from Dan as she casts her spell.
"Border World Hakurei Darmaku Field!"
In the void, a large barrier kept Dan and Reimu. Leaving Marisa and Flandre unable to see.
"Wow, I can't believe he made Reimu use one of her special spells." Marisa said.
"You seem to know what this spell does." Flandre said.
"Yeah, this spell traps high level yokais as they are exterminated inside the barrier." Marisa explained.
"Well, I don't think it will stop Dan."
"How can you be sure?"
Flandre smiled. "Cause Dan has been holding back this entire fight."
Dan looked at the barrier he was in.
"I can tell that this is different from the one she casts in the beginning. I don't think I can escape this time." Dan said to himself.
A barrage of red and white bullets were fired in an intense pattern.
Dan had to fly to narrowly avoid them.
"Man, it's like she really wants to kill me."
"Divine Spirit "Fantasy Seal -Blink-"
Reimu passed Dan as seals were being sent to him at a fast pace.
"Seals again?"
To his surprise, they turned into large orbs.
"Woah!" Dan barely avoided them as more bullets rained down at him.
Reimu speed pass him again as more orbs were shot at him.
"I get it know. She thinks by overwhelming me with attacks, I'll lose focus and eventually get hit. Pretty smart. And considering how many there are, I'm afraid that I'll eventually get hit."
Dan rubbed his chin.
"Now I may not be Yukari, but I think I can do something similar to one of her spells.
'Dan, please tell me you aren't...'
A card appeared in his hand, glowing both purple and green.
The card disappeared, before appearing as a small black ball.
The very ball shot out a large green tornado.
The wind were sucking all the seals and bullets into the ball. Once all the attacks were sucked in, the dark ball shrank a bit before exploding a purple beam heading straight for Reimu.
'That beam is coming at me too fast! I must avoid it!' Thought Reimu.
She planned on phasing through the barrier, hoping the attack would die down once it hit the barrier.
Reimu expected to just float through her own barrier, what she didn't expect was to crash face first into it.
She quickly regained her composure and stared at the wall in confusion.
"How is that possible? I'm the one who cast this barrier. Why is it locking me in?"
To add more insult to injury, the part of the wall she touched glowed purple as strings jumped from her barrier, looking to catch Reimu. She cried out as the strings wrap around her arms and legs. They them drags her to the wall, turning her around as she witnessed the beam coming straight at her.
'This is going to hurt a lot.'
Both Marisa and Flandre heard glass shattering as Reimu's barrier was destroyed as a purple beam shoots to the ground.
"What happened?!"
"Dan won."
Marisa was running to her best friend as Flandre followed.
On the ground, Reimu looked worse for fear. Most of her attire was torn with some scorch marks. Even some parts of her were bleeding, but she was alive.
Dan gracefully lands on the ground.
"I believe this means I won."
Dan walks to Reimu and reaches out to her.
"Come on, I know you aren't dead."
Reimu looks up to a smiling Dan and snarls.
"How...How did you manipulate my very own barrier?"
"Well, its like you were saying in the very beginning, I had the field advantage. Remember, this is my domain and I can manipulate it freely as possible?"
Reimu's eyes widen at what he was indicating.
"So you're saying..."
"I negated your ability you're to float. Because that's your special ability correct? To phase through anything you please." Dan stated.
"...You knew about that?..."
"Actually I didn't. See, I wondered why you placed yourself in that recent barrier even though there was no reason too. Given the attacks, even without that second spell you cast, the attacks were more than enough. Then I thought to myself...'Does she have some sort of ability to phase through easily?' And I saw you made your way headfirst to the edge of the barrier, so I made so that you couldn't phase through the barrier you cast, and even bobby trapped the barrier as a nice bonus."
"..."
"Wow Dan, you are so smart!"
"I know, people tell me that all the time."
'Since when?'
'Shut it Drago.'
Dan pulled out a card which glowed, before they knew it, they were back where they stood.
"So Reimu, does the battle we had show I'm capable?"
"...Dan Kuso...Dan Kuso...DAN KUSO!" Reimu repeatedly shouted.
Marisa looked frightened.
"Uh oh! Careful Dan! That usually means Reimu is angry! And believe me, Reimu is scary when she's mad!"
Reimu swatted Dan's hand as she stood up herself.
"YOU! YOU PLAYED ME FOR A FOOL THIS ENTIRE TIME!"
"What?!"
"DON'T 'WHAT' ME! THE ONLY REASON YOU AGREED TO FIGHT ME WAS TO MAKE ME LOOK A FOOL IN FRONT OF MY FRIEND AND THE ENEMY THAT ALMOST KILLED MY FRIEND. THAT ENTIRE FIGHT, YOU WEREN'T EVEN TRYING WERE'NT YOU! YOU WERE JUST ENJOYING YOURSELF!"
Dan put his hands up defensively.
"Of course not!"
Reimu glares hard at Dan.
"...I mean...Not completely..."
"Ah! I knew you were holding back Dan! That means you could've beaten her ass without breaking a sweat!" Flandre cheered.
'That's not something talk about in this situation.' Dan thought.
"Why are you so mad? I thought that fight was to prove that I was capable of handling Flandre." Dan said.
"A fair fight! I wanted to see through my eyes how you were able to defeat Flandre. Instead, you used deceit, trickery, and illusion in order to fight me. Similar to how yokai fight. If that's the case, then I wonder how you would fair in a real fight!?"
"..."
Dan once again took out his pipe in order to smoke.
"Let's picture a scenario. Pretend I wasn't the one who fought you, instead it was someone out to kill you. Will you say the same thing to the very person who is trying to end your life?" Dan spoke in a monotone.
"Woah...His whole demeanor changed." Marisa whispered.
"What are you trying to say?" Asked Reimu.
"You believe that in every battle that takes place, there should always be a fair fight am I correct?"
"That's right but-"
"I'm sorry, but that's naive."
"N-Naive!?"
"How can you be confused? Didn't you just state earlier that you exterminate yokais for a living? And that all yokais use deceit, trickery, and illusion in order to fight?"
Reimu was gritting her teeth, but couldn't deny his claims.
"...Yes..."
"Then there's possibility that rule may apply to others. And there's also the possibility that rule may not apply all the time."
"S-Stop confusing me!"
"I'm not Reimu, I'm simply telling you the truth. You shouldn't judge a book by its cover so easily. I mean just look at Flandre. To you she's just some heartless monster who knows nothing about mercy. When in reality she's just a scared and confused child who suffers from abuse from her older sister."
"For the record! I'm not a child, I'm 495 years older than you!" Flandre shot back.
Dan looked back shocked.
'That's right, physically, she's older, but mentally, she's a child.'
"What's your point Dan Kuso?"
"I'm just saying that you should see things from a different perspective. Didn't your parents teach that or something?"
That last sentence cause Reimu to physically recoil.
Marisa covered her mouth.
"What?"
Upon seeing Reimu's reaction, it immediately hit him.
"Oh!...I'm sorry I didn-"
"DON'T EVEN TRY TO APOLOGIZE! YOU SEEM TO KNOW EVERYTHING DON'T YOU?!"
Reimu was shaking her hands as her eyes became misty.
"I'll...I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU DAN KUSO!"
Reimu then ran past him.
Dan scratched his head in shame.
"Damn...I didn't mean to bring it up something so emotional."
Marisa gave then an apologetic look.
"It wasn't your fault Dan, you didn't know."
"Still, I shouldn't have said that to her so nonchalantly...Can you tell me how it happened?"
"...I don't know how all the details, Reimu clearly doesn't like bringing it up...But I know that her family was killed by yokai."
"I see...And when did this happen?"
"Nine years ago...I remember hearing about how the whole Hakurei clan was killed off by high level yokai, and Reimu was the only survivor."
"...That's terrible. No one should experience such trauma."
'Indeed.'
"Maybe I should comfort her."
"No offense Dan, but she probably hates your guts more than ever now. I think it would be better if I comforted her."
Dan nods. "Okay, Reimu probably ran out the barrier in that direction."
"Huh, I didn't we could leave."
"You can, that's just for keeping the humans in with a few exceptions. But it definitely keeps enemies out. So you better bring Reimu back here fast."
Marisa nods as she runs to her best friend.
Dan sighs as placed a hand on his head.
'Dan I know what you're thinking, and it wasn't your fault.'
'100 years Drago...We've spent a century here and yet I failed notice this incident nine years ago. I could've saved her family.'
'You can't change the past partner. Believe me, I know that feeling...More importantly, why weren't we ever told of this by Yukari?'
'That...I'm not sure of. Let's deal with this mist business first.'
'...Alright.'
Outside the barrier
Reimu ran as fast as she could before stopping in front of a tree.
She was wandering one day. Reimu managed to leave the shrine without her mother's permission. She then noticed smoke.
"Wait that direction...THAT'S THE SHRINE!"
Reimu didn't recall how fast she ran, all she wanted was to see her mother.
By the time she arrived at the shrine, the place was set ablaze.
Reimu could only stare in horror as the shrine was on fire.
She dropped to her knees.
"MOMMMYYYYYYYYY!"
"REIMU!"
The shrine maiden turned to her best friend who was panting.
"Jeeze you run too fast."
"..."
Marisa stared at her best friend with sympathy.
"Reimu, Dan didn't mean what he said."
"It doesn't matter if he meant it or not. I hate that man."
"Reimu, what has Dan done to warrant such hate?" This wasn't like Reimu at all.
"...I don't know."
"Then why are you so mad?"
"...I just can't stand him."
"Reimu, that's not a valid answer." Marisa frowned.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY MARISA?! THAT THIS YOKAI JUST SHOWED UP OUT OF NOWHERE AND WERE SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE HE HAS GOOD INTENTIONS!? THAT WERE SUPPOSE TO FEEL BAD FOR THAT VAMPIRE THAT ALMOST KILLED YOU?! THAT EVERYTHING HE IS SAYING UP TO THIS POINT MAKES SENSE!?"
She then broke down sobbing. "I just don't understand..."
"Reimu, Dan isn't like the yokai who killed your family. He's a good person."
Reimu wiped her eyes.
"How can you be sure?"
"If he didn't have good intentions, then why didn't he leave me to die?"
Reimu wanted to speak, but couldn't find an answer.
"While it's true we don't know everything about Dan Kuso, I can tell the he's not evil."
"...Perhaps you're right Marisa. I think the reason why I despised him is because he reminds of them. And now that I think about it, I was being too rash with his decisions. At the very least, I owe him in apology."
"I'm so happy!"
"That you made me realize my mistake?"
"That, and the fact that you admitted I was right for once!" Marisa stated with a huge grin.
"I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but hear that you mentioned Dan Kuso."
A chill went down both their spines as they looked up to see Remillia Scarlet with a dark smile on her face.
Inside the barrier
Flandre gasped in shock.
"Flandre?"
The blonde vampire turned to Dan with worry on her face.
"She's here...My sister is here."
"Oh Dan Kuso!"
Dan face grew serious.
"Stay here."
Dan flew outside the barrier. He was greeted by head of the Scarlet Mansion.
"You must be Dan Kuso I've heard so much about. You definitely fit the description Sakuya described."
'I smell blood...'
Dan looked closely and was horrified by what he saw.
In both her hands, Remilia was holding Marisa and Reimu. Both of them were heavily wounded.
"Ah, so you noticed them. They tried to fight me, but obviously they failed. I can't believe they were stupid enough to take me on."
"Let them go." Dan demanded.
"Ho ho...You need to hear what I've have to say first."
"Let. Them. Go." Dan stated again more serious.
"Perhaps you didn't hear me, I said-"
She didn't finish as Dan appeared in front of her. He placed a card in front of her. It glowed green as Flandre was hit by a tornado face first. Sending her flying away. She did drop the humans as Dan quickly grabbed them. He flies down to place them gently.
"You guys okay?!" Dan asked.
Marisa was unconscious but Reimu was barely awake.
"Dan..." Reimu spoke.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I didn't protect you then, and I didn't protect you now."
To his surprise, Reimu placed a hand on his face and smiled a little.
"It's okay..."
Remilia appeared in front of Dan, looking annoyed.
"Like I was saying before Dan Kuso. I have a proposition for you. I would like you to become a member of the Scarlet Mansion. With your powers, we can take down those who get in our way and I'll bring back all the vampires!"
"By using your younger sister?"
"Speaking of which, where's Flandre?" She then notices the barrier surrounding the village.
"I see, so you placed a barrier in order to protect them from my sister? That's foolish because-"
"Actually, your sister is inside the barrier. I placed it there to protect her from you!"
"...I'm sorry, I think I misheard you, did you just say you placed my sister in the same village she was trying to turn humans into vampires?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because unlike you, I'm not a heartless monster who uses people just to achieve their selfish goals." Dan stated.
"Is that what you think? I'm a terrible person for trapping my sister inside her basement for 495 years? You're wrong, I was protecting her?"
"Bullshit! You were keeping her from leaving your mansion."
"I know you're not stupid Dan Kuso. You clearly saw what Flandre is capable of if she is left unchecked. I did what I had to do in order to not only protect herself, but from the people she was going to endanger!"
"Oh yeah, and what would your parents say if they saw that you locked your only sister in a basement for 495 years and only brought her out to use her!?"
Remilia face scrunches as her fists clench in anger.
"...I've got to stop asking that question."
"My family is gone...All because of the yokai! If they hadn't fought with us, then they still would've been around! That's why I'm doing this! To bring back the vampire clan!"
"I understand you've lost a lot of people. For that I'm sorry, but hurting innocent people isn't the answer. Take my word Remilia, I've seen people like you before. They thought that their goals were achievable and didn't care that they hurt people in the process!"
Dan motioned his hands.
"It's not too late. You can still come back from this. Just remove the mist and we can work something out."
Remilia's eyes were shadowed.
"You know...Those words...That's exactly what they said before they slaughtered my people."
In her hand. a purple spear was emitted.
"I see that you won't join our cause, in that case, I'm going to kill you, then those girls, and take my sister."
"You-You can't kill them. Remember, the Devil's Contract, you can't harm any humans."
"Ah, but see, there's a loophole with that contract. It states that I can't harm any defenseless humans. In other words, humans that aren't magicians or exorcists like those too."
'Damn it, worth a shot anyway. Looks like I'm going to have to fight her.'
'Dan, I know you can tell already, but she's completely different from her younger sister.'
'I know, that's why I have to end this without anyone getting hurt.'
Dan made a clone out of his shadow.
"Take them out of here." The clone nods as it picks up Marisa and Reimu and flies away.
"Sorry, they aren't going anywhere."
Reimu turns to the clone and throws her spear.
It hit the clone as it disappears, making the two girls fall.
"NO!"
Dan flew as fast as he could to catch the girls. When he did, he turned to see Reimillia in front of him with a red beam.
Dan disappeared as the beam was fired.
Reappearing away from Remillia.
"She's fast! Damn it! I need to figure out a way to fight her without Marisa and Reimu in the crossfire!"
Multiple red bullets were shot a Dan.
Dan had to evade those bullets.
It wasn't a problem if it was just him. But because he was carrying two people, the difficulty increased.
"Hell Sign Thousand Needle Mountain!"
Dan's eyes shrank as thousands of knives rained down on him.
'Crap.'
Dan said nothing as he blew a large flamethrower to melt the knives in his path.
"Okay, time for some payback."
Dan tossed the girls in the air as he materialized a card in his hand. It glowed blue.
"It stopped Flandre, so it should work on Remilia.
A shape of a dragon shot out of the card as it head to Remilia.
"She's not moving?"
Dan caught the humans.
The dragon opened its maw as it chomped down on Remilia.
To Dan's surprise, the dragon cracked and shattered into pieces.
"What the hell? How was she able to-"
SQUELCH
Dan slowly looked down to see Remilia plunged an arm through his torso.
"I...Don't understand...How did...?" Dan coughed.
"It seems Sakuya was mistaken. The only reason you were able to beat both my sister and my maid was because you were in that void. Without it, you're weak. Too bad, because you're handsome."
Dan then grabs her arm.
"Don't underestimate me."
Dan's gem glowed as it was emitting attribute energy.
"Let go of me!" Remilia orded.
"Sorry, I don't listen to bitches."
Dan stated right as he shot a beam at Remilia point blank.
Remilia crashed to the ground.
Dan clutches his wound.
"Damn, I was careless."
Dan flies down and spots Remilia.
Suddenly bats flew off her body until her form was no longer seen.
"What?"
"You've been fighting an illusion this whole time."
Dan's eyes widen as he turned around to see Remilia gripping Flandre by the hair.
"FLANDRE!"
Dan turned and say that the barrier he cast was no longer there, Flandre must've destroyed it.
"Dan please stop!" Flandre pleaded.
"You see Dan, I was here before you even noticed me. I made an illusion of myself in order to lure you out. You were fighting an illusion this entire time. The only person who actually knew where I was Flandre!"
Dan looks at the blonde vampire in shock.
"Flandre...Please tell me this isn't true."
The younger vampire bit her lips, looking guilty.
"I'm sorry Dan, I knew my sister would come here way before you noticed. She was already in front of the village, waiting to ambush you."
"Oh, don't be so shocked Dan Kuso. You couldn't have known. After all, fate is everything in this world. I am however disappointed that you chose to go against me. But Flandre here convinced me not to kill all you three where you stand...As long as you don't interfere with my plans."
"Flandre come on...Don't tell me your actually okay with this?!"
"I'm not...In fact I hate it! But remember what you told me? The pinkie promise? I promised I would protect you from my sister. And this is the only way to protect you."
Flandre was smiling while she was crying. "It hurts because you're the first friend I've ever made. But I'm doing this for your sake. Please, don't try to follow me."
"Bu-"
"Enough has been said! Come on Flandre, we need to go back and discuss your actions today."
"Okay sis..."
"WAIT!"
Remilia looked down at Dan.
"You won't get away from this Remilia. You're going to lose. I don't need to predict the future to see that."
Remilia smiled.
"Unfortunately for you, fate is not on your side."
Dan appeared in front of Remilia as he slashed her cheeks, drawing blood.
Flandre was surprised by this action.
Remilia turned to Dan with a cold look on her face. But she said nothing as she flew by him.
Flandre gave Dan an apologetic look before flying away.
Dan reappeared in front of the girls.
"Come on, we need to recover."
Dan carried both girls over his arms as he walked to the village.
"Dan...What do we do now?" Reimu questioned.
"Simple, we're going to the Scarlet Mansion, saving Flandre, and kicking Remilia Scarlet's ass.
"And...Stopping the mist."
"True."
'Well Drago, it's been a century, but it looks like we're going on another adventure.'
'About time. But first, you all need to rest.'
Scarlet Mansion
Remilia was in her room.
"It's going exactly like you predicted."
In front of her, was a shadowy figure.
"I see you met Dan Kuso correct?"
"Yes, and to be honest, I don't see how he is threat like you explained."
"That remains to be seen. Just remember to follow the plan. And activate the card when he comes here."
"And if everything goes as planned, I'll bring back the vampire clan?"
"Yes."
"You know, I still don't know your name."
"My identity isn't important. What is important that Dan Kuso is to be killed."
"That's the thing, why does he have to die?"
"...Revenge, that's all you need to know."
"Okay, but make sure you hide your presence from the others."
"No problem, one more thing."
The figure throws two cards at Remilia.
"What are they?"
"When you know you're going to lose, activate it."
"But you gave me two."
When she looked, the figure was gone.
"It doesn't matter, soon vampires will come back to Gensokyo!"
