Chapter 6

Someone was there!

We arrived at the sheriff's station quicker than I thought we would. Traffic and the speed limit was not a limitation for Zeke tonight. He needed to get there and he needed to get there now. Tobias offered to drive, but Zeke's death glare shut that down quickly. Tobias understood, sitting beside him in the passenger seat, silently supporting him.

The three of us rushed out of the car and just about ran into the police station. Tobias reached the door first, opening the door for us. Zeke is the first one in the door, glancing around. Four steps up to the front desk talking through the bullet proof glass, he explains what we are doing there. The cop behind the glass seems annoyed for some reason. She tells us to have a seat that Marlene is just finishing up. I find it strange that they would be finishing up with her so quickly and why wouldn't they want to talk to the family. Zeke raises his arms in the air and drops them to his side frustrated at the lack of interest this officer seems to be showing in regards to his brother.

I take a seat, with Four standing beside me. He places a comforting hand on my shoulder as he stares worriedly at Zeke, who hasn't stopped moving since we were told to take a seat. He paces back and forth, wearing a hole in the carpet as we are forced to just wait. Finally the door opens and Marlene emerges. Zeke finally stops pacing, his head lifting towards her. We all rush to her side, stricken at the sight of her.

Her makeup has run down her face, her tears stained its marks on her cheeks. Her hair which normally has every strand in place is in tangles and in one big mess. The rest of her seems to be intact other than her arms that seem to be wrapped around herself tightly. As if she is holding herself together.

I see the same Detective from this morning, the same Detective that said that Christina had likely killed herself, behind Marlene. He glances my way, giving me a harder look than this morning. Something about his stare tells me that he knows he was wrong, but is not willing to admit it outloud.

Without any words Zeke takes Marlene into his arms, rubbing her back as he asks her, "Are you Okay? Are you hurt?"

"No." Is all she can manage to get out before she breaks down. If it wasn't for Zeke's strong arms around her, odds are she would have fallen on the floor.

"She's free to go for now. We might have some more questions later though." The Detective says, after clearing his throat. It's funny for a cop, he has no sympathy as he seems to be annoyed by Marlene's display before him.

"You don't want to ask me anything?" Zeke asks.

"Not at this time… There isn't a body, no evidence to show any sign of foul play… other than what Marlene said and has shown us… nothing really to go on at this time." He says, his voice sounding like he has repeated these lines more than once today. "The boy in question was well known for pranking others… For all we know this could be another one of his pranks." He finishes.

"The boy in question?" Zeke interrupts, making it well known how offended he is. "That boy has a name… It was Uriah and he's my brother." Zeke says, his voice raising towards the end. Smartly the Detective doesn't respond. He just nods his head at Zeke pressing his lips into a straight line, finally realizing that he is pushing buttons with someone that he obviously shouldn't be. I notice the cop behind the desk, she is getting antsy with the scene that is breaking out before her.

"Let go," Tobias says, breaking the silence between us all. Tobias places a hand on Zeke's shoulder. Whether it's to keep him from punching out the idiot Detective, or just guide him out, I don't know. Marlene is the first to move, walking around Zeke and heading towards the double doors. Zeke soon follows after her, giving the death stare at the Detective as he backs out. Tobias and I are the last to leave.

"I have to call it as it is… the evidence is just not enough to prove otherwise." The Detective says once Zeke and Marlene are out of ear shot.

""You're right…You obviously need a body in front of you with a sign that says "I was killed," for you to do something about it." I say sarcastically as I walk out of the lobby with Tobias right behind me.

I can see that Zeke is dying to go off the moment Tobias and I get outside. He wisely waits for the doors to close behind us before he turns to Marlene asking the million dollar question.

"Alright… Marlene what the hell happened?" He blurted out. "Please…" He whispers. He closes his eyes, taking a deep breath before he continues, "I need to know. What happened to my brother?" You can see the pain and grief behind his eyes.

Marlene nods, biting her lower lip. She descends down the three steps before she waits for us to follow in pursuit to our cars. We walk down the street in silence as we pass the gates to the inbound side of the station. We all stop to stare at Uriah's old beat up Mazda. I feel my stomach sink as I see the condition of the car. The driver's side window is shattered and the windshield has large cracks on it with what looks like blood smeared all over it. My hand flies to my open mouth in horror, as Tobias hand falls on my lower back guiding me away from the scene. We finally stop beside Zekes' car. All shell shocked by what we all just saw.

"Was that… Uriah's blood?" Zeke asks, his hand wiping his mouth to mask his rage. Marlene just nods, her body shaking. I wrap an arm around her shoulder, letting her know that she isn't alone and that we are here for her.

"Yes, but they don't believe it. They think it's fake… that Uriah faked all of this." Marlene finally cracks, breaking down as she whimpers and sobs heavily into me. Zeke moves to take her into his arms, holding her tightly to him as he soothes her.

"Please. Mar, what happened?" He whispers, "I know… I believe you… He wouldn't have done something like this." Marlene finally straightens up after some time, nodding as she wipes the tears from her eyes.

"Lynn and Matthew were both home tonight. So we decided to park out at look-out point for some privacy," She begins, she stares down at the large grease puddle on the street as she continues on, recalling tonight's events. My heart breaks as she speaks, imagining how painful this has to have been for her and now to have to relive it for not only us, but for his brother. "He needed to go pee. I stayed in the car." She says, regret in her voice. "He was gone for so long. I got worried. I stepped out of the car, calling for him. I tried to hear for anything in case maybe he fell and got hurt. But I didn't hear anything." I can feel the shivers in her body run through her as we get to the terrible part. "Then I saw it. A person, just standing there, staring at me from the trees. I knew it wasn't him. This person was taller and built differently… they were wearing a slicker, the hoodie was up covering every inch of them. They began to move towards me, so slowly… I got scared and got back in the car. I remember locking all the doors, yelling for Uriah. But he never showed up. Then I heard it… boots climbing onto the back of the car and onto the top of the car. That's when I started to honk… long honks to signal to Uriah that something was wrong, he needed to get back, just in case he was too far out to hear my screams. But he still didn't come." She says, her voice getting lower in tone as the tears continue to stream down her face. She begins to gasp for air, scared of what happened to her. "I tried to start the car. It took me so many tries before it finally turned over. By then I was hearing all sorts of noises coming from the top of the car. Then that's when it happened, they tried to use an ax to get through the ceiling of the car. I threw that sucker into reverse and put the pedal to the metal. The person fell off the car and rolled onto the ground. I put the car in drive and tried to run them over again. That son of a bitch dodged me at the last minute. But then I heard something snap… and that's when… that's when…" Marlene stops, her heaves are taking over her as the tears fall faster down her cheeks.

"When what happened?" Zeke asks.

"That's when… Uriah. He… He fell on the car, head first. He had some kind of rope around his neck." She finishes, her sobs taking over. Tobias takes her this time, shushing her as Zeke snaps and begins to punch the top of his car. "The person pulled him off the car so easily… Then they tried to break in the window with the ax…. I put the car in reverse and went to get help." She finishes. "I didn't know what else to do."

"Was he dead?" Zeke asks, refusing to turn around and look at Marlene or any of us.

"He looked… I think he was…" She cries, confirming Zeke's worst nightmare. "When we went back… he was gone. That's why they think it was a prank."

"SON OF A BITCH!" Zeke yells. "I'm going to kill that son of a bitch, if it's the last thing I fucking do." He continues raging on. Tobias lets go of Marlene, reaching out for his best friend, trying to assure him that no matter what… they will find out who did this. And they will pay.

"Where's? Where's Shauna?" Marlene asks, crying. For the first time since Zeke walked in on Tobias and I.. doing what we were doing… I ask the same question. She should be here.

Just then Zeke's phone rings, he picks it up on the second ring. I don't have to look at the caller ID to know Marlene's question will soon be answered.

"Shauna. Shauna, baby, I have bad news…" He begins, he pauses for a moment. I can hear her voice upset and yelling. Zeke's eyes widen as he listens to whatever is going on that has upset Shauna so much. The three of us are frozen in place, watching Zeke's mouth drop open as he stares at the three of us. What? What is it? Is it Uriah?

"It's Lauren… She's dead." Zeke blurts out in complete horror.
