Chapter 37: Interlude

XXXXX

The stream was drying up. Water still passed but it was low and it was scaring the villagers. He crossed his arms and pondered what to do, knowing no matter what, it would end up his mission of the month.

He growled and turned, tracking the source of the lessening water. A pause and he jerked to the left, his sword turning into a stick to swat at things for a moment.

He looked at his sheath then glared, searching the area.

"Wench! Come down here!"

Another rock popped him in the back of the head just that fast. He turned with a snarl and looked to his opponent.

Black hair and a slim form in butterflies and black.

"I'm going to kill you if you do it again."

She blinked calmly. "You can if you want to be thrown out of the village."

"I don't give a damn!" he snapped.

"-and you can't have sister's soup anymore."

He paused and thought on this a moment. Delicious salty soup that tasted of chicken and spices, or this stupid woman laughing at him while he starved in the forest.

She snickered quickly, unable to let him think over the threat without giving in with laughter.

"You would make a horrible negotiator," he huffed

"And I am not negotiating for that reason. You seem to understand better with simple back and forth."

He paused, something about that sentence touching a nerve for some reason.

"Bitch" he grumbled childishly.

She waved a dismissive hand. "You're going to fix the stream?"

He shrugged a shoulder and shoved his arms into red sleeves. "No water, no food."

She hummed with a nod.

"You need any help?"

"Feh!"

"You're welcome."

He paused and balked. She plucked a little change pouch from the inside of her sleeve. Her fingers went into the pouch and she pulled hard. The bulky hilt of a sword appeared. She grabbed the hilt and pulled out a large sword whose width shouldn't have even gotten past the tie strings.

A nod and she stabbed the ground with the sword that stood as high as her chest. She put her little pouch away delicately, then pulled her sword back up.

A smile and she hugged it close like a doll, somehow not being cut by the absurd thing.

"How is that fair?" he muttered angrily.

She blinked, "My father made it for me."

He paused hard and glanced to the sword on his hip.

"You ready?"

He grunted irritably and turned to stomp away. She followed, humming away the sound of his protest.

"Inuyasha, you migh-"

"Where the hell did you get that weird name?" he huffed.

She smiled, "It's decent, so why not?"

He growled and that smile brightened a bit more. "Well, there is a powerful hanyou with white hair and red clothes. It's his name."

"That's your reason?"

"Do you have a name picked out, then?"

He frowned and looked away as she caught up and matched his pace.

"Don't make fun of me" he protested quietly.

"I'm not. I'm telling the truth."

He frowned at her. "So, you named me after the guy from some story?"

"You have all the colors and attitude I heard of. Your sword is pretty powerful." She swayed toward him and he swayed away just that fast.

She gave a glowing smile.

He made a disgusted sound and looked away.

"Stop being a baby" she cooed teasingly.

"You are so annoying!"

She chuckled a bit but swayed back to give him some space.

"So, you know Ami has a crush on you, right?"

He scrubbed his head wildly and shouted at the sky. "I just met her!"

"She's allowed to have a crush."

"Feh!" He looked away with a snap of his head. "Why would I be interested in you crazy broads from this village."

"What's wrong with us!?" she gasped in mocking horror.

He swatted at her and she stepped back a bit more, grinning.

"-you all, staying in a human village."

She thought on it a moment and shrugged, "They don't mess with us as long as we don't mess with them." She nodded to the stream, "They like the protection too."

"I'm not a damn guard dog for them."

She shook her head.

"It's apparently becoming something common in other places. I still wait to see it, so I can believe it, but it makes me smile instead of glare."

He glared ahead. She giggled.

"So-"

"So?" he growled.

She was quiet for a moment.

"If you don't talk to Ami, I'll start the matchmaking myself."

"What the hell!"

She laughed at his outburst and danced away when he tried to grab her.

"Wench!"

"You might do better getting along with the village head and his wife, if you stopped calling everyone a wench."

"You are a wench."

"I am not, if you are not a bastard."

He paused again. She smiled slowly.

"So! You are a wench!"

"My parents did bind in a marriage agreement before I was born. I am not a bastard. Those same parents allowed me choices. I am not a wench."

Inuyasha stopped and looked at her.

"Are you a bastard?" she cooed.

He didn't answer, eyeing her sourly.

"I am not a wench so I expect that you are not a bastard. You'll be okay." She teased.

"I'll figure out where I came from, just so that I can laugh in your face."

She grinned slowly and he snorted.

"So, you'd better figure out your name, then."

"I'm not Inuyasha or whatever! I'm just me!"

She shrugged, hugging her sword a bit tighter.

"It's your name until you find your name."

He growled, and she continued, "I told the village your name and how much it bothered you to not have one."

His body tensed and he looked at her with rage in his eyes. "You didn't," he gasped quietly.

She gave a very pretty smile.

He scowled.

She shot off into the forest.

"Get back here bitch!" he roared, racing after her.

"I give! Let's negotiate the truce!"

He snarled and she shrieked in laughter, the sound echoing around him ominously. He didn't stop though. She was ahead of him and he'd learned from her little tricks.

She'd been a pain in the ass from day one in the village. He figured he could at least learn to track her down. She wouldn't get away this time.

He knew that much.
