Ranger School: Chapter 22

The Ranger Base itself was about twice the size of a Ranger Depot, which was a rather nice surprise to the two Student Rangers as they had never seen one before.

'I'm glad Kellyn's so eager to learn more about the different Ranger facilities. It's even better since we're both training to be Pokémon Rangers!' Wendy giddily thought as they entered the Ranger Base.

Inside the Ranger Base contained a similar layout that the Ranger Depot had; aside from an area off to the right-hand side that contained a room labelled for training. There were four people working at the Ranger Base around this time, two female Operators, a male Pokémon Ranger, and a somewhat muscular dark skinned man. The two female Operators greeted Kellyn and Wendy as they entered, prompting the dark skinned male to turn around, a warm smile on his face as he approached the two.

"Hello there! Welcome to Vientown's lovely Ranger Base! My name's Barlow, I'm the Ranger Base leader; what can I help you two with?" Barlow asked.

"Nice to meet you sir, my name's Wendy, and this is Kellyn! There wasn't anything we need help with; but we're just trying to learn what we can about being future Pokémon Rangers!" Wendy said as Barlow grinned.

"Ah! Planning to be Pokémon Rangers, huh? Wonderful, it's a respected profession and Almia can always use more Pokémon Rangers! Are you guys enrolled in Ranger School yet?" Barlow asked.

"We certainly are, and we couldn't be more happier to be apart of the Ranger School!" Kellyn said.

"That's right, it's such an honor to be there!" Wendy said.

"Wow, it's great to see young folk show such enthusiasm! I know that the two of you are nicely dressed up…but would either of you care to do some training?" Barlow asked.

Wendy and Kellyn looked at each other and nodded in affirmation; knowing just what they needed to do.

"You bet we are, in fact, we're ready right now!" Wendy said as Barlow gave a hearty laugh.

"Man, you two look like you're always up for adventure; all right! Come with me into this room please!" Barlow said.

The joyful Ranger Base leader brought Kellyn and Wendy to the aforementioned training room and opened the door. Upon the three of them entering the square fifteen by fifteen foot room, Barlow presented them with two Stylers to use, and rightfully so, as their Stylers weren't on them. Right in the center of the room was a Skarmory, looking rather annoyed and irritated unlike other Skarmory.

"What's going on with your Skarmory? I've never seen one so irate." Kellyn whispered.

Despite Kellyn being quiet, the Steel and Flying-type heard him and launched a fierce attack of wind at them. The Wing Attack lasted a few seconds, but the move was powerful in making the group slide back a bit. Eventually the sleek and sturdy Pokémon ceased its attack.

"That…isn't my Skarmory…we had a hiker mention it to us a few days ago. She was scaling Peril Cliffs when a Skarmory came flying towards her, almost silent. Now, after she tried to fend off a few Steel Wings and Wing Attacks, she decided it'd be best to flee. That same Area Ranger you guys saw outside managed to heal that strong Pokémon up a little bit after locating it…but it's still very angry. Even I can't capture such a fierce Pokémon." Barlow said.

"I see…looks like we'll need to pull out all the stops, huh Kellyn?" Wendy asked.

"That's right...we'll do our best like always!" Kellyn said as they put the temporary Stylers on.

The duo approached the Skarmory, and it opened its' shiny steel wings, which were a brilliant scarlet red inside. The Pokémon, while made of steel, was also amazingly quiet, hence the reason the hiker didn't even hear its approach. Once the Skarmory roared, Kellyn and Wendy knew it was ready to engage in battle.

Barlow, not one to let Kellyn or Wendy, who he immediately grew to respect, did a sharp whistle. Doing so prompted two Electrike to come out of a nearby door at the back of the room. Wendy focused on encircling both Electrike while Kellyn swiftly made loops around the Skarmory.

The Electrike shot out balls of electricity at Wendy and Kellyn, both of whom avoided the attacks with ease. Skarmory followed up with using Steel Wing, and its shiny wings glowed a bright white. Roaring, it raced right for Kellyn, and the young man just barely got out of the way of the Skarmory's attack, and the Pokémon stopped before it crashed into a wall. Wendy captured one of the Electrike as the other glowed a bright yellow, launching a Thunderbolt at Wendy. As her Styler line was up, it took seven points of damage from the move, though Wendy herself was unscathed.

"You okay Wendy?" Kellyn asked as he continued to encircle the Skarmory.

"I'm all good! One more Electrike to go!" Wendy said as Barlow looked on.

'Their teamwork is impeccable…I've never seen a pair coordinate so efficiently! They seem good at knowledge and hands-on training…very impressive!' Barlow thought.

Eventually Wendy snagged the second Electrike as Kellyn and her took on a fierce Whirlwind. Wendy, using the skills she got from her Poké Assist, combined the power of the Electrike into one powerful Thunder Wave, and it completely paralyzed the Skarmory completely.

Now unhindered, Kellyn quickly made loops around Skarmory, wasting no time in case the paralysis wore off. Barlow was continuing to get impressed with the duo and their teamwork, though the leader didn't celebrate just yet as the Skarmory shrugged off its status ailment.

'What a terrifyingly strong foe…at least Wendy's got my back…it'd be tough facing such an angry Skarmory alone.' Kellyn thought as the Pokémon's sharp beak began to glow bright white.

The Skarmory unleashed a roar and shot forward towards Kellyn, and the Student Ranger knew he couldn't dodge it in time. Making a quick half loop, Kellyn let the Styler line get attacked as the line momentarily shattered, and the Styler took eleven damage points.

Kellyn didn't let such a Pokémon best him, and once the Electrike regained some of their energy, Wendy had them use Thunder Wave. Now that the Pokémon was paralyzed, albeit with a weaker Thunder Wave, Kellyn continued making loops around the Pokémon, and soon enough, the powerful and fierce Skarmory…was captured.
