AN: Back to the happy stuff!

It was Alex and Kelly's anniversary, so Kara and Lena were babysitting Esme for the weekend. Officially Kara was the babysitter, but Esme had asked so politely whether Lena was staying over too that it had turned into a sleepover and the three of them were spending the weekend together. Friday night Lena had been so tired from work that Kara had arranged a quiet evening of watching a movie before bed. Saturday they'd gone to the zoo, then swimming, and finally had their own 'game night' with board games Esme could play. Waking up on Sunday, with no plans in mind, they asked Esme what she wanted to do.

"Fly a kite!" the little girl told them excitedly.

The film they had watched on Friday had been Mary Poppins and now she wanted to build her own kite and fly it in the park. Kara raided the arts and crafts supplies she kept for Esme's visits, while Lena began researching the best homemade kite instructions online.

It took them three hours, mostly because Lena was worried that the glue wouldn't be dry in time and then because Kara insisted on having lunch first, before they were ready to leave for the park.

They stood at one of the higher points in the park, away from trees which could tangle the tail of the kite, just the three of them. Kara held the sail while Esme held the spool, with Lena standing next to her ready to help. After three runs, trying to launch the kite, Kara could see Esme was disappointed. The wind just wasn't strong enough to pick up the kite. Lena was trying to cheer her up when Kara had an idea.

Without discussing it with them, she lifted the kite just over her head and blew.

The kite shot into the air and there was a yell from Lena and Esme, but when Kara looked over she didn't see smiling faces. Instead, Esme was standing still on the ground while Lena was dragged along the grass and then lifted up into the air. Kara raced over to save her, Lena was only a foot or two off the ground by the time she reached her and she caught her easily, before setting back down on the ground and taking the spool of the kite.

"Are you alright?" Kara asked anxiously.

"Yes, thanks to you."

Esme came over, "wow Aunt Kara, can you do that again when I'm holding the kite?"

"What do you mean?" Lena asked her.

"Uh, I..." Kara interrupted, wanting to be the one to tell Lena the truth, "might have tried to help the kite get in the air a little."

"She huffed and puffed just like in the storybook," Esme exaggerated.

Lena looked at Kara and raised one eyebrow, "oh really?"

"I didn't know the wind would be so strong once I'd launched it, and..."

"I wish I'd been holding the kite," Esme told them.

Kara could only imagine what Alex would have said - or done - to her if that had happened, "I wasn't thinking."

"It's a good thing Esme was letting me hold the spool so I could wind it back up," Lena told her, "and a good thing that you were here to save me."

"Do you think we could try it with an umbrella for Halloween? We could dress up like Mary Poppins and the other kids would be so jealous, please!" Esme turned her best smile on Kara.

"No," Lena put her foot down before Kara could even consider it, "Aunt Kara might be indestructible but you could get hurt. Your moms would be very upset."

"Aunt Kara could hold my hand."

Kara sighed, "Auntie Lena's right, maybe when you're older and if your moms say it's okay."

"Well can we at least try the kite one more time?" Esme asked, "you could hold it with me and blow it up into the air."

Kara looked at Lena, to see how she felt about the idea. Lena gave her a small smile and a nod, stepped back to give them some room. She watched as Kara checked the kite for damage before launching it into the air, smiling at Esme's excited chatter as it flew above them.

Lena was busy re-gluing parts of the kite back together, the damage was only minor, caused the last time it fell, and Kara was getting dinner ready when Alex and Kelly came home, looking well-rested and happy. Esme ran over to them as soon as they arrived and began telling them everything that they'd done over the weekend.

"...and then Auntie Lena - FLEW!"

Lena nearly dropped the glue in her haste to get up and go to explain what had really happened. Kara met her at the doorway where Alex and Kelly were still listening to Esme. Alex gave her sister a questioning look and Esme stopped in the middle of her story to look at them.

"Well I can't wait to hear all about it," Alex told her daughter, "and to see what this amazing kite looks like."

"It looks much better when it's soaring up in the sky, because the tail goes all fluttery," Esme quickly looked over at Kara to check that was the right word, as she had used it to describe the tail. "A bit like Supergirl's cape."

"And we all came home safe and sound," Kara tried finishing off Esme's tale and changing the subject. "Dinner will be ready in about an hour so I hope you're hungry."

She quickly disappeared back into the kitchen. To give Alex and Kelly some time alone with Esme, Lena followed her.

"I'm going to be in so much trouble," Kara whispered to her.

"Hey, you saved me," Lena reminded her. "My feet barely left the ground."

"Alex will never let me babysit alone again."

"Don't be silly."

"Would you trust me to babysit your kids?" Kara asked.

Lena smiled and placed her hands on Kara's shoulder, "of course. I trust you completely."

Kara suddenly realised how close Lena was standing. She could hear Lena's heart beating, see how Lena's eyes were so focused on her own.

"I, um..." Kara licked her lips, "I..."

Lena blinked and took a step back, her hands falling away. She looked a little sad and Kara suddenly understood why, so she caught one of Lena's hands in both of hers and held it gently.

"I really enjoyed this weekend. Having you stay here, helping with Esme."

"Of course," Lena's voice was a little quieter as she tried to control her feelings.

"Just having you around, it was nice. I liked it."

"Well..."

"Maybe you could stay, tonight, when Esme goes home?"

"For another sleepover?"

"Or a... date?"

Lena looked surprised, then pleased, "really?"

"Yes, oh Rao yes. I've been wanting to ask you for ages, but I wasn't sure..."

Lena tugged on her hands and Kara stepped closer, "I wasn't sure, either."

They were kissing when they heard Esme's voice calling out to her mom's, "found them! No, it's okay they're just kissing."

When Lena and Kara looked around she had already gone.

"Maybe we can hide here until they go home?" Kara suggested.

"They're staying for dinner, remember?"

"Oh yeah."

Lena laughed and took her hand, pulling her towards the kitchen door, "come on, let's get it over with."

"Wait," Kara kept her back in the kitchen for a moment.

Lena looked puzzled, until Kara leaned in for one more kiss.

AN: I started writing this and realised it reminded me (a bit) of the 'Allo 'Allo episode with the 'flying nun'. Kite designs are up to your own imaginations :)
