Keeping her identity a secret had nearly cost Kara her friendship with Lena. What had built up over the past few years had been nearly destroyed with one simple sentence - words that she should have been the one to speak. She knew how much Lena hated lies and she was making more of an effort to prove that she could be trusted. After a long and serious conversation, helped along with some alcohol, they accepted that there would be some things they would have to keep from each other. Kara could not reveal certain details about her investigative articles, Supergirl couldn't share private information about other aliens on Earth, and Lena couldn't betray the confidences of L-Corp's top secret science in development. It was a kind of compromise. Every other question they asked each other was like a test of confidences, but also a chance to get to know each other better.

There was one question Kara was too scared to ask though. One answer that was best kept a secret.

"So," Lena was curled up in her favourite armchair at Kara's place while the blonde tidied up after game night, "your friend is certainly an interesting woman."

"Kate? Yeah, we met a few years ago and I said if she was ever in town she should come and join us."

"How did you meet? Were you working on an article for CatCo?"

It wasn't an unreasonable question, Kate Kane was cousin to Gotham's wealthiest bachelor Bruce Wayne. As their first meeting had involved Kate's biggest secret, Kara couldn't tell her the whole truth, but she also didn't want to lie to Lena.

"No, not an article. Do you want any more of this wine, there's just enough for half a glass?" Kara held up the bottle and tried not to look guilty.

Lena frowned, sensing that something was wrong, "I shouldn't, it's getting late."

"Oh, you can stay over if you want," Kara offered.

"I don't know..."

"Or I can fly you home after."

"That's very kind, but..."

"It's no trouble," Kara realised that Lena wasn't interested in the wine when she didn't say anything further, and put the bottle into fridge. "If you want to stay we could watch a movie, or a few episodes of that show you liked last time."

Lena smiled, "last time I fell asleep on the sofa and woke up with you snoring next to me."

"I got you a blanket, didn't I?"

"Yes."

"And I didn't complain that you had most of it over you and my feet were left out in the cold."

Lena laughed, "your feet don't get cold, Supergirl."

"But you didn't know that back then."

Kara regretted the words as soon as they were spoken, she waited for Lena to pounce on them and remind her that it was only because she hadn't told her the truth. Instead Lena kept smiling, her feet still on the chair as if she had no intention of leaving anytime soon.

"Of course, now that I know, I won't feel so bad about hogging the blanket," Lena told her after a moment's thought.

"So you'll stay?"

"Yes."

"Great. Don't worry, I'll get two blankets," Kara teased her.

"I'll set up the show," Lena offered. "What episode are you on?"

"Oh, I was waiting for you to come back over so it should start on the one after we watched last time," Kara told her.

"Didn't you like it?"

"Yes, but I liked watching it with you more."

Lena was glad Kara had turned away to tidy up across the room so she couldn't see her reaction to those words.

A few weeks later, Lena ran into Kate Kane at a charity gala. They were both there alone, and Kate seemed relieved to have someone to talk to.

"If I could just drop the money on the table and run I would," Kate confided to her. "I mean, this is the whole reason for online banking now, isn't it? You don't even need to write a physical cheque these days."

Lena smiled, "ah but then how would the truly wealthy show off their fabulous jewellery and clothes?"

Kate raised an eyebrow, she was wearing a smart suit, Lena could tell it had been tailored to fit her with good quality material.

"If we're lucky someone will get drunk enough to cause a scene and I can slip out. I've done the rounds with the press and smiled for the cameras enough to prove I came."

"I promise not to tell."

"Why don't you come with me?"

"Unfortunately I've been roped into giving a speech."

Kate shook her head in sympathy, "maybe next time."

"I'd like that."

"Say hi to Kara for me."

"Kara? I didn't think she was covering this event."

"Oh, sorry I think I misread... never mind."

Lena frowned, "what?"

"I, um... I thought maybe you were... dating."

"Kara?"

"She didn't say anything, but at the game night..."

"What about the game night?"

"You were very close."

"We're just good friends."

"Okay. So you're single?"

"That's what the papers are printing."

Kate smiled, "looking to date?"

"Sorry, not at the moment."

"It's the alter-ego, isn't it?"

"Sorry?"

"You know, my other identity," Kate whispered, then when Lena continued to look confused, "Batwoman."

"You're..." Lena cut off before she could repeat it.

"Kara didn't tell you."

"I guess she was just trying to protect you," Lena told her, but the thought of Kara keeping another secret hurt.

"You're right. It's not like I told her she could tell you, and Alex only knows because she saw me during that crisis with the multiverse... which I'm guessing you also don't know about?"

Lena shook her head, "I'm sorry, I should go. I need to prepare for my speech."

Kate put a hand on her arm, "look, it's probably none of my business, but..."

"I'm fine. I have to go," Lena pulled away.

Left alone, Kate swore. Instead of slipping out of the party and going home, she headed towards the DEO in the hope of tracking down Supergirl.
