Chapter 13:
Training at Ten Carat
Location: Home
My final full day on Melemele Island and, by extension, the final day at home before I explore the further Alola region. I still was planning to head to Ten Carat Hill, but I needed Tauros ride training first, and Hala promised to give me a quick lesson.
"I truzzt Hala! Roto!" Rotom Dex told me. "He put up a good match yezzterday to!"
"And then some," I said, getting out my two Z-Crystals. "And yes, I have decided that I will train Makuhita to use All Out Pummelling."
There was a knock on the door. Mum answered it. Indeed, it was Hala.
"Hello Marina," Hala said. "Is your son here?"
"Yep!" I said. "Let's get this show on the road!"
Location: Route 1
"Let's start by summoning Tauros," Hala said. "First, flick through the Ride Pager to find it."
I did so. Well, Tauros was the only one registered, so it didn't really matter. I pressed it, and all of a sudden, I was decked out in protective gear. Colourful red and blue costume with a helmet. Then, from the Ride Pager, a Tauros appeared with a saddle on its back. "Hello," I said, stroking it under its neck.
"Now get on it," Hala said. "I'll give you a leg up just this-" I jumped up high onto the back of Tauros and grabbed the saddle. "Once. Okay, to make Tauros go forward, shout HAH!"
"HAH!" I shouted as Tauros darted forward.
"GREAT!" Hala shouted. "Now, to turn, you lean right and left as if you were skiing!"
Easy for Hala to say; I had never been skiing. There were no snowy mountains in Kanto. But I understood what he meant. I leant right and then left, making Tauros turn. "I'm doing it!"
"Great job! Zzt!"
"Now, to stop, you shout-"
"STOP!" I managed to get Tauros to halt just before it trampled Hala. Knowing Hala though, he could have stopped Tauros with his bare hands. "And that's all you need to know!"
"Great job! Roto! Okay Elliott, onto Ten Carat Hill! Zzt!"
I headed south down Route 1 and passed Professor Kukui's Lab. I saw multiple rocks in front of a cave; that was my destination.
"CHARGE!" I shouted as Tauros charged on through.
Location: Ten Carat Hill
The cave was dark and wet. Very different from the lush Verdant Cavern to say the least.
"Thanks," I told Tauros. I held up the Ride Pager and Tauros went into it. "Okay, let's head off!"
Well, I tried to. But I came across a Pokémon. It was grey with some white stuff around it. It was floating in the air slightly.
Carbink (メレシー)
#123
Rock/Fairy Type
Jewel Pokémon
1'00" (0.3 m)
12.6 lbs (5.7 kg)
Some say deep beneath the surface of the world, a pack of Carbink live with their queen in a kingdom of jewels.
Carbink has no known evolutions but there have been cases of Carbink transforming into the Mythical Pokémon Diancie.
"Slowpoke, go!" I shouted. Carbink started making its rocky body rougher.
"That'zz Sharpen! Roto!" Rotom shouted. "It raizzes Attack!"
"Water Gun!" I shouted. Slowpoke fired some water at Carbink, hitting it for Super Effective damage. Carbink then used Rock Throw, using telekinesis (because it had no hands) to throw a small rock at Slowpoke. "Water Gun again!" Slowpoke squirted some more water at Carbink. This was a Critical Hit! Carbink then used Tackle, slamming its entire body into Slowpoke. "Finish with one last Water Gun!" Slowpoke did just that, and Carbink was down.
After that, I continued onwards. The light at the end of the tunnel was coming into view, so I ran towards it. However, that caught the attention of another Pokémon. It was round and jagged with a single hexagonal ear on its head.
Roggenrola (ダンゴロ)
#120
Rock Type
Mantle Pokémon
1'04" (0.4 m)
39.7 lbs (18 kg)
The hexagonal cavity is its ear. It walks in the direction of sounds it hears, but if the sounds cease, it panics and topples over.
"I choose Makuhita!" I shouted, sending out my Fighting Type. "What do you say we give out Z-move a go?" We put both our arms out in front. "Yeah, let's get buff and rough Makuhita!" Energy started surrounding us both.
"Go get em Elliott and Makuhita! Roto!"
"ALL! OUT! PUMMELLING!" We both punched a few times, then did a big punch that got the Z-move ready. Then, Makuhita punched at Roggenrola a few times and…
It was left with one HP. "WHAT?!" I shouted. "What did we do wrong?"
"Nothing," Rotom Dex told me. "Roggenrola must have Sturdy. Roto. It leavezz Roggenrola hanging with a bit of health to save it from a one hit knock out!"
Roggenrola came back with a Headbutt which Makuhita took. "Now use Force Palm!" Makuhita grabbed Roggenrola and gripped it tight, knocking it out.
We exited the cave to find ourselves in the middle of the crater in the field where Ten Carat Hill got its namesake.
"Amazing, Roto," Rotom Dex said. "And look! Pokémon are living here!" Rotom was right. There were Rockruff and Carbink, along with a few other Pokémon. One was grey and muscly.
Machop (ワンリキー)
#117
Fighting Type
Superpower Pokémon
2'07" (0.8 m)
43 lbs (19.5 kg)
It loves working out. As it gazes at its muscles, which continue to swell day by day, it becomes more and more dedicated to its training.
The other Pokémon was yellow with red spots on it. It looked dizzy in both its eyes and posture.
Spinda (パッチール)
#128
Normal Type
Spot Panda Pokémon
3'07" (1.1 m)
11 lbs (5 kg)
Each Spinda's spot pattern is different. With its stumbling movements, it evades opponents' attacks brilliantly!
Spinda has no known evolutions.
"Pokémon can live here to," I thought. I looked up at the mountain and saw a pedestal. "Hey… what is that?"
"Let me look! Roto!" Rotom Dex floated up to the pedestal. I saw it shocked in the distance, and then it came down excitedly. "Roto! You won't believe it! It'zz a Z Crystal! Zzt zzt!"
"No way!" I shouted. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go get it!"
However, the only path up had a large boulder in the way with a hole at the other end. "Well, thizz is a nuizzence. Roto. We can't get up there at the moment, and I don't think Tauros or Makuhita could push thizz into the hole. Unlezz… maybe Trumbeak could pluck it out! Roto!"
"No," I replied. "That's not how things work. We need to work to get Z-crystals, not take the easy way out."
Rotom Dex grinned. "Good point Elliott! Roto! Alwayzz up for a challenge! Roto!"
Location: Iki Town
"Dartrix, Razor Leaf!" I made it back just in time for the finale of Hau's battle with Hala. Dartrix fired some sharp leaves at Crabrawler, dealing the final blow. "We won Dartrix!"
"So you have," Hala said. "Beaten… by my own grandson." Hala got out a Fightinium Z. "This is for you. Use it well."
"Thanks!" Hau said, receiving it from him. "Hey Elliott, looks like I've caught up to you!"
"So you have!" I said. "So, onwards to Akala Island tomorrow?"
Hau nodded. "Sounds good."
"I have a better idea," said Hala. "There is a boat leaving in two hours. Why not catch that one and head over there early?"
I looked at Hau. "Sounds good. But we better tell our parents. I'll ask Lillie is she wants to join."
"Got it!" Hau replied. "We will rendezvous at the Ferry Terminal."
Location: Home
"Looks like I'm leaving sooner than expected," I told Mum. I petted Meowth as I said this.
"Go get em son!" she said. "And remember, you have your Pokémon by your side. With that said, do not hesitate to call me for advice or if you feel homesick." Mum hugged me and Rotom Dex joined in.
"Okay, Roto. Next stop, Professor Kukui!"
Location: Kukui Research Lab
"Alola Professor!" I shouted.
"Alola Elliott," Professor Kukui replied. "I got the message from Hala, off to Akala Island?"
"Yep!" I replied. "I wondered, does Lillie want to join us? It would be fun!"
"Great timing to!" he replied. "I was just heading over to Akala Island myself! I'm sure Lillie would love to join!"
"Of course!" Lillie said, clinging onto her bag as she went down the ladder to prevent Nebby from escaping. "I would like to get out there a bit more."
"That's the spirit!" I said, being well aware of the dream I had. "Okay, pack your things! The ferry leaves in an hour!"
Location: Ferry Terminal
Me, Rotom Dex, Professor Kukui and Lillie met up with Hau, who was booking his ticket. I promised I would pay for my own, with Professor Kukui booking his and Lillie's.
"Thizz'll be fun! Roto!" Rotom Dex said. "Imagine all the Pokémon you can find on Akala Island, and all the new challenges we will face!"
"The ferry won't leave for half an hour so feel free to wait around in the waiting room," said the Receptionist.
Half an hour later...
"Oh yeah!" Hau said as we skimmed across the sea on the ferry. Below us, multiple Pokémon swam as Hau sat on the side and ate a Malasada.
"Hey Lillie," I said. "Wanna come up and see the view?"
Lillie poked her head out and, reluctantly, got up on the top with us. She held onto her hat as if her life depended on it.
"Enjoying yourselves?" Professor Kukui asked. "Look! There is Akala Island!" He pointed to the large island that was coming into view. "That's our next stop; Heahea City!"
Melemele Island – Akala Island
Location: Heahea City
We all got off the ship and onto dry land again. "Heahea City!" I shouted. Around us were two resorts, one smaller and one much larger. Additionally, there were a few shops and another laboratory. One road lead north and another into a cave.
"Hey," Hau said. "Tomorrow we should spend the day here! Get a taste of the Akala lifestyle!"
That sounded like a plan.
Rotom's Move Dex!
We finally made it to Akala Izzland! Roto! You know, the first Pokémon that Elliott battled today was a Carbink, a Rock and Fairy Type, and we will be covering a Type from the latter Type today. That move being, Play Rough!
Play Rough is a Phyzzical Fairy Type move with a pretty solid power of 90. Zzt. The name sayzz it all; the user plays about with the opponent in not a very nizze manner. It even has a chance of lowering the target'zz Attack stat! Roto!
Pokémon that can learn Play Rough include Arcanine, Mawile and Mimikyu!
Man, I hope Elliott doezzn't play too rough with me. I'm a bit fragile. Roto!
