Jack was angry, with himself more than anyone else. Here they were, out in the middle of nowhere, facing an unknown threat, and what had he decided was the best course of action? He'd split his team up, sending the two least experienced members off on their own.
Yes, Tosh was capable, she'd seen action before, but she still spent most of her time at the Hub with her computers. And this was Ianto's first real field mission; it had been unfair to foist him off on Tosh, make her responsible for his safety. Now both of them were missing, and Jack still had no clear idea of what they were up against.
He'd been annoyed with Ianto for what he'd said to Gwen earlier, even though Gwen had brought it on herself with her juvenile 'bonding' game. Not wanting to admit to himself that Ianto's response had been fully justified, he'd decided to put some space between his two newest team members, and he'd wanted to keep Gwen close to him so he could see how she handled herself…
Stupid, all of it, he should have known better. They should have all stuck together; there was safety in numbers.
