Season 1: Episode 6

The street was almost deserted and barely lit that night, only two things were clearly visible, one of them being a car that was stopped in the middle of the road, the driver's door open and the windshield badly damaged as well as the front end and hood. The other thing visible was the bloody, unmoving body of a teenage girl, lying on the ground in front of the vehicle, her position and condition all pointing to her having been hit by said vehicle. Standing unseen in the shadows, looking out at the sight were three black clad figures. After a long moment, they all shared a look, a nod and finally one of them reached a gloved hand into their pocket and pulled out a phone, through which they then contacted 911, requesting police and paramedics to the location, reporting a hit and run.

Becca sighed softly as she sat in class, trying to focus, but it wasn't easy, not when there had been yet another fruitless search for Clem and her morale was flagging.

'I'm not the only one, the others...' She thought sadly.

She was startled, as was the rest of the class, by the sound of the PA system coming to life and the Principal's voice coming through.

"Becca Jones, Brody Burress, Sarah Chaikin and Violet Adlon, please come to the office at once."

'What the?'

Confused and worried, feeling the eyes upon her, Becca stood up and quickly left the classroom, heading for the office.

When she reached the office she saw the other girls, also arriving.

"What is going on?" She asked.

Sarah shrugged. "I've no idea, why would they call all four of us?"

Violet grimaced. "You don't suppose it's got anything to do with the searches?"

"There's only one way we'll find out guys, come on." Brody said at last.

Nodding the four entered the office and were startled to see not just the Principal, but a police officer there too.

"Sit down girls." The Principal said in a worryingly sombre tone.

They did so, sharing nervous glances and looking from the Principal to the officer and back.

Finally he spoke. "I'll be making a school-wide announcement soon, but I thought it best to have you four know beforehand...There's no easy way to say it..."

He looked up at the officer who nodded sadly and then spoke himself.

"In the early hours of this morning, we were called to a hit and run incident...we got and saw the car...and the victim." He paused and the girls flinched, knowing what was coming before he even said it. "The victim was Clementine Hutchison, she was killed on impact."

It was as if the spirit was sucked out of the girls.

All four of them sat in shock, listless and feeling like it was just too unreal. Violet tried to ignore the burning in her chest, the prickling in her eyes but the words just kept echoing in her head. They left the office crushed, barely hearing the Principal using the PA to call the school assembly to try and break the news to them too. It didn't seem to matter anymore, all they could think about was how fruitless their efforts had been, and now, Clem was dead.

Brody shook her head, trying to get her mind to focus, the loss of Clementine had hit hard and interfered with the plan she was trying to implement, one she had made the very day of the locker room attack, after everything with Gabe. She was determined now to get the full story and to clear Gabe's name as despite Becca's doubts, she was sure he was innocent of all the things the rumours said about him. Reaching the Garcia's house she knocked on the door and it wasn't long before Kate Garcia answered.

"Oh um, hello?" She greeted Brody, confused.

"Mrs. Garcia, I'm Brody Burress...from Gabe's school. I came to talk to him."

"Oh sure, come in." Kate replied, letting Brody in and closing the door. "Gabe, you've got a visitor."

As she said that, Brody noted two other people who she had learned were Gabe's uncle and little sister, looking curiously at her from the open door of the living room.

She quickly turned her attention to the stairs where Gabe was coming down and stopped, surprised to see her.

"Huh, Brody?"

She gave a small smile. "Hey um...I wanted to thank you, for what you did."

He shifted slightly. "Oh, yeah, it's nothing really..."

"Not to me it wasn't. That's actually why I'm here." Brody explained. "I wanna help you."

"Help me?"

She sighed and continued. "Those rumours about you. They're not true, it was Rondi who spread them, right?"

Gabe tensed but nodded. "Who else and no, they're not, but I don't see how-"

"What's this about rumours?"

Gabe started and then saw, to his horror, his family standing there, looking at him with concern.

He looked wildly back at Brody, but she shook her head.

"Gabe, it would be better if-"

"No." He insisted.

Mari stepped in. "Gabe enough, we know something's going on with you and we want to help. But you keep shutting us out."

Gabe stepped back, looking trapped. "Just, just stop, you can't help me."

"You don't know that Gabe, you're not even letting us try." Javi interjected.

Before Gabe could protest further, Brody decided to play her trump card.

"Gabe, let us help you. If you tell me exactly what's going on...then I'll know where to look and I assure you, I will be able to find proof and show Rondi for what a lying evil little witch that she is." She told him firmly. "But you've got to give me something to work with. I can clear your name and force everyone to realise they were wrong about you, but not without you opening up...now please, talk to me."

Gabe was tense for a few moments then sighed and something akin to hope appeared in his eyes. He agreed and together they headed for the living room, with Gabe ready to reveal the truth.

All four girls could feel the gravity of the situation, despite a feeling of personal displacement as they walked down the aisle of the church, to the end where the coffin was laid, a small stand on top of it displaying a photo of Clementine. They all felt self-conscious in their knee length black dresses, all but Brody wearing black stockings and all but Violet wearing black heels. Brody's legs were bare and Violet wore black flats instead. Ed and Diana stood at the end and greeted the girls as they approached.

"Thank you for coming, girls." Diana said with a sad smile. "You're um, in the front row with Alvin, Rebecca, AJ and us, that's okay right?"

The girls nodded, not trusting themselves to speak and went to take their seats, noting the other three who nodded to them, sombre or in AJ's case, devastated.

As they sat waiting for the last people to file in, Violet looked over her shoulder at the back of the room and spotted someone. It wasn't hard as even in her black suit, this woman looked completely out of place. She was tall with shoulder length greying brown hair, brown eyes and pale skin, in her forties. Violet got the attention of the other three and gestured subtly.

"Who is that?"

The other girls also glanced as subtly as possible, seeing her right away.

"No idea." Sarah replied.

"Me neither." Becca added. "She looks pretty strange though."

But then Brody nudged them and hissed. "It's starting guys."

They all quickly faced the front and focused as the service began.

Leaving the church together the four girls still tried to clear their heads, but everything that happened inside, the whole service, left them emotionally drained. It really hammered home the fact that Clem was dead.

"Hello." A voice caught their attention.

They turned and saw, to their surprise, it was the woman they had seen inside.

"Lilly Rapp." She introduced herself. "I'm an old friend of Ed and Diana. I understand you four girls were all close friends with Clementine?"

They all nodded and Violet managed to answer.

"Y-yeah."

The woman nodded. "I'm sorry for your loss. I just hope you all find a way through this together...to keep her memory alive."

Before they could even reply to that, the woman, Lilly, turned away and walked over to Ed and Diana. To the shock of the girls, rather than the sadness from earlier, both of them now looked rather serious. Then their phones suddenly, simultaneously, buzzed and they checked only to see they'd all received the same message from the same unknown number.

'Be very careful, you are all still in grave danger.'
