"W-where am I?"

Tate looked all around him, the unfamiliar environment confused him. He quickly tried to recall the last thing he remembered.

But the moment he did so, he started to panic. The collector! Where was everyone? Are they okay?

He got out of the bed he was in and dashed outside the room and downstairs at speeds hard to perceive with the naked eye.

Once he made it down, he saw an older woman who looked like Luz sitting down with his friends. It was obvious that she was Luz's mother, Camilla.

One more thing that became obvious was that Tate currently didn't have the energy to do what he just did freely. The result was him nearly comically falling face first into the floor had it not been for Hunter who dashed in to support his friend as he tried to regain his balance

"I'll take him upstairs." Said Hunter to everyone with an awkward chuckle.

As the two got further away from everyone's ears, Hunter spoke.

"Did you know that this was gonna happen?" Asked Hunter calmly.

"I wish. The first time I bit the dust was before I got to this point." Said Tate dejectedly before turning to Hunter. "By the way, how are you not having an existential crisis about this?"

"I *chuckle* think one existential crisis is enough for me." Said Hunter nervously as he remembered everything surrounding him being a grimwalker.

The two finally made it back to the room where Tate originally was and got inside. But the moment they did, Gwenevere, Tate's baby sister, flew to Tate using her wings and clung to his arm with the strength of a grizzly bear.

"Aaaand she's awake, great." Deadpanned Tate tiredly before he sat on the ground with his sister. "Can you tell me what happened after i passed out? I don't see any of adults around."

Hunter rubbed his arm with a dejected look before taking a deep breath.

"They're...still in the demon realm with the collector."

Tate visibly shook when he heard that name. Hunter quickly continued after seeing that.

"They're safe, I think. They should have made it out of the skull after Darius and Alador threw us through the portal."

Tate didn't calm down. They could be dead, he thought. He looked depressed for a second before his eyes widened.

"My mom. What happened to my mom?!" Exclaimed Tate as he clutched Hunter by the shirt. "The curse and her cove brand-"

"Lilith? I-i don't know! She wasn't with us before we got here." Replied Hunter in a panic.

Tate paused as he processed this information with a horrified expression. He let go of Hunter and spoke in a dejected tone.

"Hunter, can...you leave me alone for a minute."

Hunter nodded before slowly leaving a room. The moment he left, Tate felt tears welling up in his eyes.

It wasn't just his mother, his aunt, his grandpa and grandma. He didn't know if any of them were alive or dead.

He turned to his sister clinging to his arm and gave her a pat on the head... because for all he knew-

-she could be the only family he had left.

In the few following months our group spent in the human realm, a lot has happened as they continued their attempts at building a portal back to the demon realm.

Among the group, Tate was the fastest to adapt to the human realm thanks to him being a human before and was the most helpful around the house.

He helped chop cooking ingredients with his skills and began learning how to cook from Camilla. He even went a little beyond and got a job as a swordfighting instructor.

As for his baby sister, Gwen, she started from clinging onto Tate and biting everyone who tried to touch her to being fine around others and only occasionally biting.

And of course, the two siblings clung to each other for every moment they could.

And oh there were a lot.

Like when the whole group went with Camilla for a makeover.

Tate got the most normal and fitting clothes, a vest, button up shirt and black pants. He also dyed part of his hair black to look a little more like his mother.

Gus, Willow and Amity got relatively normal clothes, Hunter went with the more flashy chicken costume that looked like Flapjack.

However, there was one makeover more horrendous than Hunter's. It was Gwen's. Perhaps they should have remembered that she had wings before trying a cute dress.

And there was also the second time they saw human realm rain.

Everyone played together in the rain and mud and for a while, they forgot about the dark reality of the present.

"Tate, you're back from your job?" Asked Camilla cheerfully as she headed towards the run down shack in the woods where Amity and the others were.

"Yeah." Replied Tate with a weak smile. "I still can't believe how many people show up. Is this how Aunt Eda feels when she scams people?"

Camilla chuckled. "You're not scamming anyone. I've seen what you can do with a knife."

"Knives are just little swords. It isn't hard to decapitate someone with it too." Blurted Tate nonchalantly with a shrug before realizing what he just said.

Camilla turned to the young Clawthorne with a horrified expression, causing Tate to go stiff.

"I use a spell to keep people alive as just heads." Added Tate with a smile hoping to alleviate some of Camilla's worries. But when she kept the horrified look, Tate continued. "They can also be kept alive for their full lifespan if you can manage their diet well and the heads can be easily reattached."

"...and how was this information found?" She asked with unceasing horror.

Tate gulped before going awkwardly silent under Camilla's gaze.

"*Sigh* sorry, I still don't get some of the...customs of the demon realm."

"Oh, it's okay. That spell is weird there too. I made it after all." Said Tate cheerfully before immediately regretting it when Camilla looked at him with horror once again.

Luckily, Camilla decided to let this one go after a few seconds.

The two soon made it to the shack when they opened the door, Gwen flew to Tate and clung to his face as his palisman tried to get his attention.

"Ooh, I like what you've done to the place." Said Camilla inspecting the building. "No more exposed nails or possom nests. But this still confuses me." She said revealing a red drawing of Hooty on the door.

"Yeah, he still confuses us too." Replied Willow.

"Hola, Camilla, Tate." Gus cut in with the best Spanish he could muster. "We're learning Spanish from this scary owl app."

Gus held up the tablet for Camilla and Tate as the owl in the app spoke.

"Hoot hoot, practice everyday...or I'll appear in your nightmares!"

"Oh, okay." Said Camilla in confusion.

"Huh, should've said something like 'practice Spanish or I'll make you vanish'." Added Tate as he got his sister off of his face.

"I'll be sure to do it next time!" Replied the scary owl language app.

Everyone turned to the tablet for a second before putting it away without any worries.

"Well, I'm going to pick up Luz from school." Said Camilla cheerfully. "Pop quiz." She continued Before saying 'How do you say that in Spanish?' in Spanish.

Hunter eagerly tried to answer, but fell short when it came to it. Vee, however, answered the question perfectly.

As Tate smiled at his friends eagerness, he felt a tug on his shoulder. He turned to see his phoenix palisman staring him down as they spoke.

Tate couldn't decipher what was said because of the sheer quantity of words, but he was able to make out one word.

"Alive? What? O-one at a time please." He said in confusion as the group returned to practicing Spanish.

But before he could listen to what his palisman wanted to say, he heard Amity's dejected voice.

"Maybe we should take a break."

"A siesta." Replied Willow cheerfully.

"Siesta!" Exclaimed Gus.

"We've been here for months and we've made no progress on the portal door." Continued Amity dejectedly. "We can't expect Camilla to take care of us forever!"

"In the meantime, we could pull more weight around the kitchen." Said Gus with a smile. "My mustard ravioli brought tears to her eyes."

"Please no, I had to clean the kitchen after that one. I also help plenty with the kitchen already. So no to that idea." Said Tate firmly.

"I can help fix damaged clothes!" Hunter chirped in as he held a poorly fixed sweater.

Tate didn't say anything about that, not wanting to discourage Hunter. Then Willow spoke while holding definitely carnivorous possibly dangerous plants.

"I can spruce up the garden."

"Absolutely not!" Tate countered. "Too dangerous on multiple levels."

Tate looked at Willow to see if she understood, but she was staring at him in a weird way. Actually, everyone was.

"How do you do it?" Asked Gus curiously.

"Huh?"

"How do you fit into the human realm so easily?" Asked Willow curiously.

"Uhh, what?" Asked Tate in surprise.

Hunter looked horrified by the question as he already knew the answer, but he stayed silent.

"You can cook, no one thinks you act weird, you're not even surprised by most things here AND you're considered a responsible adult!" Exclaimed Gus. "Does being a big brother give an aura of responsibility? What's your secret?"

Tate stuttered to come up with an answer, but someone dashed to the rescue. It was Hunter.

"Uhh, he was just...that kind of person! In the coven! Yeah!" Said Hunter in a panic. "SUPEE ADAPTABLE!"

The awkward silence that followed Hunter's yelling, was enough to drop the subject. This allowed Amity to start another.

"Who cares about how adaptable he is?! There's a whole human realm to search!"

"But Luz has school most of the week." Replied Willow as she took a picture of Amity with a camera.

"So? Let's explore on our own. Luz did so on the isles." Added Amity.

"If Eda came here before, maybe there were others!" Added Gus. "Maybe they left something we can use!"

"Yes! That's the spirit!" Said Amity as she slowly approached her friends. "Together, there's no challenge that can hold us ba- ow."

Amity couldn't finish the sentence before tripping on a hole made by Flapjack.

"It's a sign! We're doomed!" Exclaimed Gus in a panic before Gwen flew at him and bit him.

"Gwen!" Exclaimed Tate before trying to get his sister off of his friend.

"Flapjack! This isn't funny anymore- huh?" Said Amity as she noticed something inside the hole made by Flapjack.

"Get her off! Get her off!" Screamed Gus as everyone tried to get the baby off of his face.

"Guys."

Everyone, even Gwen, slowly turned to Amity as she held an odd looking box.

An odd looking box that held their only hope of returning back to the demon realm.
