That afternoon, the New Directions met to rehearse a song for the pep rally. It was a pretty outdated disco number called 'Le Freak'. Grace bit her lip as she was handed the sheet music, she normally loved more old school numbers and did know the song but it wasn't a serious number, one that could recruit new members.
"Alright guys let's work on the choreography," Mr. Schue said as the New Directions also didn't seem so sure about the number but were going to give it their best.
New Directions:
Ahh Freak out!
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Freak out!
The New Directions performed while doing the dance movements Mr. Schue had shown them. "Energy, guys! It's disco," Mr. Schue said as they performed.
New Directions:
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Ahh Freak out!
Le Freak, C'est Chic
"Good with the hands. John Travolta hands. All right," Mr. Schue instructed them as they continued to perform.
New Directions:
Freak out!
"We're freaking out. Let's go," Mr. Schue smiled.
New Directions:
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Have you heard
About the new dance craze?
"And up and out and down. Good. Good. Good. Good, guys," Mr. Schue said, nodding approvingly.
New Directions:
Listen to us
I'm sure you'll be amazed
Big fun!
Rachel kicked her leg out while dancing as it came close to Mercedes' face.
"Whoa, whoa! Hell to the nah! First of all, you try to bust my face again, and I will cut you!" Mercedes shot at Rachel before turning to Mr. Schue "And, also, this song is terrible."
Grace couldn't help but bite her lip, nodding to agree, the song was awful.
"No, no, no. It's not the song. You guys just need to get into it," Mr. Schue protested.
"No, it's the song. It's really gay," Kurt said annoyed.
"We need modern music, Mr. Schue," Artie agreed.
"I'm sorry, guys. We don't have time to discuss this. We're doing this song this Friday at the pep assembly," Mr. Schue said as Tina's eyes grew wide.
"In front of the whole school?" Tina asked incredulously, for the first time not stuttering with how upset she was.
"Exactly," Mr Schue grinned, mistaking Tina's outburst for excitement.
"They're gonna throw food at us. And I just had a facial," Kurt scoffed.
"I'll press charges if that happens," Rachel assured Kurt.
"Guys. I can't express to you how important this assembly is. We need recruits. There are six of you. We need twelve to qualify for regionals. We have no choice or the club is over," Mr. Schue said honestly as he took a deep breath, noticing how unhappy everyone seemed to be. "I know you guys don't like this song, but we took nationals back in '93 with "Freak Out." It's a crowd-pleaser. Trust me," Mr. Schue assured the club, then took a deep breath "From the top."
"I'm dead," Finn muttered to himself as Grace bit her lip, she had a feeling this performance could quite possibly be the New Directions last if they did disco in front of the whole school, they just needed to find something that was more of a compromise to recruit new members, but what it could be was the question.
Grace met her twin in the hallway that afternoon.
"How was glee practice?" Quinn asked, still seeming slightly annoyed about the club, especially now that Finn was a full time member.
"Not good Q…Mr. Schue gave us this awful song for the pep assembly this Friday and quite honestly, I think it's going to make the club even more of a joke than we already are," Grace sighed as Quinn smirked a bit, happy that the club seemed to be failing on its own.
"There's no need to have that face about a club I really like is failing Quinn," Grace said, slightly upset.
"I'm sorry Gracie, trust me when I say it's nothing against you and everything against my reputation being tarnished by Finn being in that club," Quinn said honestly as Grace shook her head.
"When are you going to realize it's not always about you? Sometimes people want to do things that they really care about," Grace said seriously as Quinn rolled her eyes.
"Please, this is just one of his fits that he gets into when he doesn't get his way," Quinn said simply as Grace shook her head, realizing she'd never get through to her status obsessed sister, who couldn't understand anyone doing anything other than to be popular.
"The more you fight him on this Quinn, the further you're pushing him away. I get why you can't give him what he wants and believe me, I applaud you for it but you need to meet him halfway sometimes Quinn," Grace said as Quinn took what her twin had to say into consideration.
"Maybe you're right. I guess I'm just freaked out about everything that could be going on, the pregnancy or worse," Quinn said in a whispery voice as Grace squeezed her sister's hand.
"I know you are Q…I just wish you wouldn't drag this out," Grace said simply.
"I can't help it. I need to at least have one last good memory and if he ruins my chances for homecoming queen…" Quinn began as Grace exhaled loudly trying not to let Quinn's popularity obsessed mind bother her.
"...he won't okay. What he does, doesn't reflect on you. You are a shoe in for homecoming queen, no one even comes close that's running against you," Grace tried to assure her sister who took a deep breath.
"Maybe you're right…but if I have to stand by watching someone else get crowned, I'm going to lose it," Quinn said, upset as the twins made their way to her car, heading back home after a long day.
Grace said a silent prayer that her sister would be homecoming queen once again, she knew she wouldn't hear the end of it if Quinn didn't win. Besides Quinn, her parents would be all over Quinn about how she lost the crown to someone else. Being a Fabray came with an exorbitant amount of pressure. Both their mom and their older sister, Frannie had been crowned Homecoming Queen for all of their 4 years of high school and Quinn refused to be the person who broke that legacy.
Grace knew there was a lot less pressure on her, being the twin of the Queen Bee. She hadn't been expected to beat her sister but if at least one of the twins won, the Fabrays would consider it a victory. She had always worried about the toll this was taking on Quinn, though her twin seemed to thrive in the environment, she knew how desperately Quinn didn't want to disappoint their parents, least of all their father who Quinn idolized. So, Grace hoped and prayed that everything would turn out okay, she just didn't know that homecoming should be the least of the twins worries, not yet.
