Chapter 24

A month went by after the Chappy convention.

Rukia tried to carry on with life as normal, but the people closest to her noticed something was off. She tried to be cheerful, and most of the time she was, but there were times when she would remember the faces of her father and grandfather as she escaped from them on the convention and the pang of guilt wouldn't go away.

Riruka would try to calm her down as often as she could.

"You were trying to protect Ichigo," the pink haired girl said "it was brave, you'll face them once you're ready and on your terms, they'll have to understand."

Rukia wanted to agree with her, but her father screaming her name was still giving her chills, he wanted her back at home and deep down Rukia wanted to go back too. She often dreamed about waking up on her four poster bed, surrounded by her Chappy plushies and having breakfast with her father, grandfather and granddaddy... like before the convent. Whenever the memories came back to her, which was mostly at night once all the lights were off, she would hide under the covers and close her eyes tightly until sleep would overcome her.

That didn't mean that she was not thankful to the Kurosaki family, she loved all of them.

The twins were awesome with her, and now they even had their own watchlist on Ichigo's netflix account, they would sit for hours in front of the TV and laugh or cry together, it depended on the movie, as if they were real sisters, and once Ichigo would yell at them to go to their room they would fall asleep after talking half of the night.

Kurosaki Isshin on his side was nothing but kind towards her. The Kurosaki patriarch would call her "third daughter" without awkwardness or fakeness, and his goofy side always brought a smile to Rukia's face. When Rukia's blood tests finally came and it was confirmed that Rukia was anemic, Isshin made sure to fill the fridge with lots of food to help Rukia to get better, and he was serious about her treatment, just like a father, she was extremely thankful for that.

Then, there was Ichigo.

The orange haired teenager was one in a million. He was kind, honest, loud, sometimes annoying, and reckless and Rukia couldn't imagine a best friend for her, even after leaving the convent she kept praying and thanking God for placing Ichigo on her way, they were getting closer each day and by this point they could read each other like an open book. In fact, Ichigo was one of the few who noticed the slight change in Rukia's behavior after she faced her family.

"Rukia," he called her one afternoon "can we talk?"

Rukia, who had been reading Ichigo's mangas on his bed, while he kept doing homework, looked lazily at him and nodded.

"Are you okay?" Ichigo asked worriedly.

Rukia frowned.

"Of course," she answered without hesitation "why do you ask?"

Ichigo scratched the back of his head awkwardly.

"Ever since you saw your father…" he sighed and shook his head, he knew Rukia didn't want to talk about it, she never gave him details about that day "is there anything you want to talk about?"

Rukia shook her head as she looked at the manga again, she didn't even know what to say. The raven haired girl had made up her mind about revealing her last name eventually, she knew she couldn't keep going like this but every single time she would try she would worry endlessly about how Ichigo would react. Rukia didn't have the courage to face his rejection, because she often thought that he would get upset about Rukia endangering him, and his family, by hiding her family's identity.

But, she didn't have the courage to run away in the middle of the night either, she didn't want to leave the life she built in Karakura and she didn't want to leave Ichigo.

"It's nothing," Rukia muttered quietly "don't worry."

Ichigo sighed heavily, the last month he had been getting that answer a lot.

"Okay," he agreed "remember that you can tell me anything, you know that, right?"

Rukia chuckled and smirked at Ichigo.

"I know, carrot top" she assured him.

And that's how most of the arguments would end.

Ichigo, on his side, was having a lot on his plate. School was going great and, ever since he started casually kissing Rukia, and leaving hickeys on her neck as often as she would allow him, he felt as if he was finally living like a normal teenager. Hanging around with Renji and the others around town was as fun as ever and family weekends were also a nice part of his routine, he didn't want to admit that he was enjoying his days more and more ever since Rukia stumbled into his life but he knew that, as sappy as it sounded, Rukia had made the rain stop.

He would often think about it.

Sure, he had been getting better before meeting her, but there was always something missing, like a hole on his chest that simply couldn't be filled, like a constant rain that wouldn't let light reach him. But ever since the midget stepped into his life with her impossible gorgeous eyes and her playful smirk he felt as if everything was fine, as if the rain, the same rain that had been drowning his inner world, had finally stopped.

Rukia was Ichigo's ray of light.

There were no other words to describe it.

However Ichigo didn't want to ponder on his feelings for her, it was a scary field for him. To begin with when it came to relationships Ichigo had quite the messy history while Rukia had no history at all, and that didn't settle well with him, what if he were to mess up by developing feelings too soon? What if she were to panic over him feeling something more than mere friendship for her? And finally… was he worthy of her? Ichigo didn't know, and he didn't want to think how it would feel if she were to reject him, after all he had a shitty past, he had dated Grimmjow and then at the brothel…

No, he wasn't worthy, he didn't believe he was worthy.

"Someone is overthinking," Renji pointed out "at some point smoke will come out of your head."

Ichigo scoffed, he was walking towards the school parking lot, and he was late to work.

"Shut up," he said "Byakuya will give me hell."

Renji nodded.

"You mentioned how the Kuchikis have been having a terrible mood lately," he said "are they having financial troubles?"

Ichigo shook his head as he stopped next to his motorcycle and climbed on.

"Impossible," he assured him "and even if they were to have problems with the company, they have savings accounts big enough to hold that lifestyle for years."

"Then?" Renji asked.

Ichigo shrugged, he didn't know what was going on with the Kuchiki clan but it started a month ago. When Ichigo stepped at work ready to start another day, Byakuya, Soujun and Ginrei made him wait because they were discussing "family matters" at the meeting room, Ichigo obeyed and waited outside but it was uncomfortable, because the discussion would get louder at some parts so he heard Soujun saying things like "well, perhaps if you had listened to us! It's been three years! Did you expect instant forgiveness?!" there was a heavy silence after that, or perhaps Byakuya was talking, but after a few seconds Soujun exploded again "I don't care! I'm tired of excuses! I'll destroy every single teenage boy in this town if it means that we can end this!" another silence "you have to do something, Byakuya! Find a solution or I'll raid the whole town!"

Ichigo tensed when the office door was opened and Soujun left enraged, he didn't even look at Ichigo and he never told anyone about it.

"It doesn't matter," Ichigo said as he started the motorcycle "hopefully their mood will improve soon."

Renji smirked.

"Hopefully," he nodded "otherwise your little novice will have to kiss you until your worries go away."

Ichigo scoffed.

"Shut up!" he exclaimed as he accelerated leaving a laughing Renji behind.

"Nothing?" Byakuya asked Robert.

"Nothing," Robert said as he opened the door for Byakuya, they had arrived at the Kuchiki enterprise to discuss an upcoming alliance "the boy at the Chappy store assures me that the lady never went back, I've tracked some girls with pink hair but… it's useless, there are no signs of the lady."

"What about Yoruichi?" Byakuya questioned as he walked towards the elevator.

Robert walked keeping two steps behind Byakuya as he answered.

"Nothing," he sighed "she keeps her store opening and closing as usual, but if she's helping the lady she's doing it with extreme discretion."

Byakuya pinched the bridge of his nose as he stepped into the elevator; once the doors closed Robert selected the floor in which Byakuya's office was and waited for the Kuchiki heir to ask him anything else.

"All of this because of a boy…" Byakuya muttered upset "how much longer do I have to pay for leaving her inside a convent?"

Robert kept quiet; he knew that Byakuya was aware that it was not only because of a boy, it couldn't be, but the Kuchiki heir wanted to blame someone, anyone, for his current predicament and he was not good at putting the blame on himself. The fact that the lady had been kept inside a convent and decided to run away, the fact that she didn't want to go back to the mansion and the infuriating fact that she chose a boy's safety instead of her own family… well, Kuchiki Byakuya was enraged beyond reason.

"I've been keeping an eye on grandfather," Byakuya mentioned as he put his hands inside his pockets, he was wearing the usual black Prada suit "I cannot find anything."

Robert nodded to let him know he was paying attention.

"I'm running out of time," Byakuya hissed with venom "she's falling for whoever is hiding her, that was our worst case scenario."

"We'll find her, Sir" Robert promised, although he was not as confident as before "we will."

Byakuya sighed as the elevators door opened.

"Yes, we will" he swore "otherwise I'm setting this town on fire."

Byakuya stepped into his office and noticed how Kurosaki Ichigo was already waiting for him. The boy was standing in front of his desk while reading some documents, Byakuya remembered how Ichigo mentioned he wanted to tell him something regarding the upcoming business alliance with Sousuke Aizen.

"Hello, Byakuya" Ichigo greeted once he saw the Kuchiki heir stepping into the office.

Byakuya simply nodded at him.

"You're dismissed, Robert" the Kuchiki heir said "keep me informed" he ordered.

Robert nodded as he left the office and closed the door behind him.

Ichigo waited patiently as Byakuya took a seat behind his wooden desk, he was trying not to show his awkwardness, he was nervous about the conversation that was about to happen. He had never directly intervened with the Kuchikis' business, but since Byakuya gave him the documents to study the alliance he invested himself on that and he was sure that the Kuchikis joining Aizen was a terrible idea. Ichigo didn't know how to explain, the information the Kuchikis had regarding Aizen was… good. He was a brilliant young man, near Byakuya's age, he had graduated from a decent school and he had a couple of average, barely successful, business.

But Ichigo thought that there was something else to it, and that's what he wanted to talk with Byakuya, hopefully he would listen.

Byakuya motioned for Ichigo to take a seat in front of the desk.

"What did you want to talk about?" Byakuya went straight to the point.

"I was reading the documents regarding Aizen," Ichigo said "I think that he has a decent background."

"Grandfather believes he's charismatic as well," Byakuya explained as he rested his chin on the palm of his hand "it took one conversation for them to think about making business together," he looked at Ichigo "what do you want to discuss about him?"

Ichigo gulped, he was just going to say it.

"I think that you shouldn't make business with him," the orange haired teenager said "he's bad news."

Byakuya frowned.

"Care to elaborate?"

"Well, to begin with…" Ichigo scratched the back of his head as he thought on how to explain "he creeps me off."

"Creeps you off?" Byakuya questioned while frowning deeper "how exactly?"

"I don't know," Ichigo scoffed "perhaps the dork glasses, or the strange smile, he looks like the kind of man that keeps dreaming about ruling the world by using everyone around him," he ran a hand through his messy orange locks "hell, I don't think I would be able to stand being alone in the same room as him," he looked at Byakuya then "am I making sense?"

"Not at all" Byakuya answered with no hesitation.

Ichigo groaned; he knew Byakuya wouldn't listen to him, there was no way.

"However," Byakuya said and Ichigo looked at him again "your father was the same when he took over the hospital" he tilted his head slightly "you just reminded me of him."

"My father?" Ichigo asked.

"Yes," Byakuya nodded once "when the investors started to look for him he would accept them, or reject them, based solely on hunches," he stared curiously at Ichigo "do you think that you inherited that sixth sense of his?"

Ichigo blinked confused, did he? He wasn't sure, he didn't even know that his father was like that.

"I don't know," he said confused "all I know is that my gut keeps telling me that I should totally stop you but…" he shook his head "it's not my place to do so, and I thought about telling Soujun-sama and Ginrei-sama but I don't want them to think that I'm crossing my boundaries."

Byakuya stared at Ichigo for a few seconds, he could always try.

"The agreement will be singed tomorrow afternoon," Byakuya informed him "but, I will not ignore your hunches."

"What do you mean?"

"You have twenty four hours starting right now," Byakuya said "go an bring proof that this man, Aizen, is not worthy of being a business partner of mine and I'll accept, or reject, his deal depending on that."

Ichigo paled, that was quite the responsibility. If he didn't find anything, and Aizen turned out to be a scammer, it would be Ichigo's fault that the Kuchikis made a bad business but, and it was a huge but, if Ichigo was right and he were to bring proof it would mean that he would save a few millions for the Kuchikis, they would owe him one.

"You answer?" Byakuya questioned after a few seconds of silence.

Ichigo stood up quickly.

"I'll find something," he promised "I'll be back before you sign the deal."

Byakuya nodded.

"I won't inform my father and grandfather about this," he said "so make sure to come on time."

Ichigo didn't need to be told twice, he left the office running without even saying goodbye.

"Ishida!" Ichigo exclaimed through the phone as he ran downstairs at the Kuchiki enterprise "I need your help!"

"What is it?" Ichigo's cousin asked lazily at the other side of the line.

"Do you still know how to hack and shit like that?" Ichigo asked as he reached the parking lot and ran towards his motorcycle "I need a favor."

"I know how," Ishida confirmed "but unless this is an emergency…"

"I cannot give you the details right now!" Ichigo scoffed interrupting him "just have your computer ready, I'm heading towards your house right now."

"Fine" Ishida said.

The afternoon went by without incidents at the Kurosaki household, Isshin called to inform that he would spend the night at the hospital due to an emergency surgery so they didn't have to wait for him. Rukia was helping Yuzu with dinner, while waiting for Ichigo to arrive, when the house's phone rang.

Karin was the one who answered.

"Hello," she greeted half focused on the TV "Ichi-nii, what do you mean you're not coming?" a pause "no, goat chin will stay at the hospital," she scoffed "hell no, you cannot make me stand up right now, I will not stop my show," she rolled her eyes "Rukia-nee!" she called.

Rukia was next to her within seconds.

"What is it?"

"Ichi-nii wants to talk with the one in charge" Karin explained while passing her the phone.

"He's already talking to you, isn't he?" Rukia asked while taking the phone.

Karin smirked smugly, that's why she liked Rukia.

"Apparently he does not recognize my authority" Karin sighed dramatically.

Rukia chuckled as she greeted Ichigo over the phone.

"What's up, Ichigo?" she said as she took a seat next to Karin on the couch.

"Hey, midget" Ichigo greeted "listen, I'm sorry, I just called to let the old man know that I'll stay at Ishida's tonight."

"Why?" Rukia asked curiously, she knew they didn't have any important homework or group project.

"I needed help with something from work," Ichigo explained and Rukia could hear quick typing on the background "and Ishida is like a prodigy when it comes to computers and shit like that."

Rukia frowned, was his asshole boss taking his free time now?

"So," she said "will I see you at school tomorrow?"

"Yeah," Ichigo answered casually "will you miss me?"

"Don't be an idiot" Rukia scoffed "don't go throwing away your sleeping schedule for your boss, carrot top, is he at least going to pay your extra hours?"

Ichigo chuckled.

"I cannot explain right now," he said and Rukia could picture him smirking "but if everything turns out as I believe Karin might get the TV she's been asking for her room soon."

Rukia smiled.

"Fine," she agreed, she knew that no matter what she could say he would still take his work seriously "see you tomorrow."

"Yeah, see you" Ichigo said and the line went dead.

Rukia sighed as she sank into the couch, she didn't want to admit that she was indeed going to miss him. She decided to enjoy whatever Karin was watching on the TV and, once dinner was ready, she helped Yuzu to set up the table. Rukia had dinner with the twins and decided that they should go to bed early.

The three of them fell asleep on Rukia's bed after chatting half of the night as usual.

"Remind me," Uryuu, who was sitting in front of two monitors, said "why are we investigating this Aizen guy?"

Ichigo was sitting next to him while sipping on an energy drink; when he arrived at Ishida's house the bespectacled boy guided him straight to his room where his computer was. Luckily Ishida's father was not at home, Ichigo always felt quite intimidated when he was in the room, so that left both boys to their expenses and that also worked to Ichigo's advantage, due to the confidentiality contract with the Kuchikis he didn't want to give details about this to anyone.

"My boss requested it" Ichigo explained simply "but I need a profound research, I don't care about school or college, I need…" he seemed to ponder his words for a second "criminal records? Can you find those? Some shady bank accounts?"

Uryuu glared at his cousin.

"It'll take hours! And we have school tomorrow!" he complained "and I'm not sure how deep I can go, this is illegal, Kurosaki."

Ichigo rolled his eyes.

"Hear me out," he offered "if I am correct, and this bastard is as evil as I believe, my boss will owe you one, trust me when I say that this is a huge opportunity."

Uryuu crossed his arms.

"Who do you work for?" he asked.

"I'll tell you if you help me," Ichigo smirked and then frowned "but you cannot tell anyone."

Uryuu pondered his options for a few seconds, he knew that Ichigo was working with his father's authorization so it couldn't be something dangerous. He also knew better than to believe the rumors regarding the Yakuza surrounding Ichigo and Rukia, those were ridiculous but, for a long time, Uryuu had been curious about who was brave enough to hire Ichigo and pay him enough for the orange haired teenager to afford a motorcycle, so he decided to help in the end.

"Deal" Uryuu nodded.

"I work for the Kuchiki clan," Ichigo admitted "my immediate boss is Kuchiki Byakuya."

Uryuu gaped and his eyes widened.

"So," Ichigo continued enjoying Uryuu's shocked face "if you help me, Kuchiki Byakuya will owe you big time."

Uryuu gulped, it was a chance too good to let it go.

"Let's do it," he nodded "but if we end up fucking up your boss better take us out of jail."

Ichigo nodded with a cocky grin and they started to work.

The next day Rukia took a seat on her desk and frowned at Ichigo's empty seat, Ishida was nowhere to be found either. She knew that he would be missing today, he sent her a text explaining how due to his extra hours he was not going to make it to school, Rukia didn't like it but, what could she do? Ichigo was a hard worker, it was in his personality so… she would just have to wait to see him at home.

"I wonder who his stupid boss is…" she mumbled as she made a mental note to ask him tonight.

Rukia thought that, if Ichigo wanted to work at a respectable enterprise she could introduce him to her father, he wanted to be a lawyer after all. But to do that she would've to go to the mansion and that's what she had been avoiding and, besides, would his father take Ichigo under his wing after finding out that he was the one who had been hiding her?

She shook her head, there was no way.

"I'll just complicate his life even more" she scoffed sadly.

In the end she decided to ask about Ichigo's work any other day, apparently leaving conversations for later was what she had been doing for the last month.

"I'm running out of time" she whispered as she waited for Riruka to arrive.

School days didn't feel the same without Ichigo around.

Byakuya was tense but it was already time for their meeting with Aizen. He turned off his cellphone as he met his father and grandfather at the meeting room, they took a seat and, a couple of minutes after that, Sousuke Aizen stepped into the room wearing a kind smile and a black suit.

"Perfect timing," Soujun praised "shall we begin?"

Everyone in the room nodded and Byakuya silently wondered where Ichigo was.

Ichigo was driving as fast as he could, he was sure that he had broken several traffic laws along the way. Several upset drivers yelled and honk at him as he passed by but he couldn't risk it, he needed to reach the Kuchiki enterprise as soon as possible. He spent the whole night awake with Ishida and they finished the research just a few minutes ago, by this point he was sure that the contract was about to be signed but he couldn't allow that to happen.

Unfortunately he didn't see the hydrant as he lost control of his motorcycle.

He cursed inwardly as he fell from the motorcycle and realized that he was probably not going to make it on time.

"Well," Soujun smiled after the contract had been read and the conditions had been discussed "I think that we have nothing else to add" he said as he grabbed the pen and the contract ready to sign.

Byakuya tensed as he noticed how Aizen fought back a smirk, was Kurosaki Ichigo right about this man? It didn't matter, it was obvious how the boy didn't find anything, otherwise he would've been here. Byakuya didn't have a reason to delay this, he didn't have a way to do it either, what was he supposed to do? Kurosaki Ichigo was not going to show up, and it was obvious how nothing evil could be proved just by looking at Aizen.

So he simply observed as his father grabbed the contract in the middle of the table.

Soujun's hand was about to sign but before he could the door of the meeting room was opened violently and Ichigo stepped inside, the orange haired teenager jumped dramatically over the table and grabbed Soujun's wrist right before he could sign the contract.

"Don't!" Ichigo breathed out "you don't want to sign this contract!"

Byakuya smirked slightly.

"What's the meaning of this?!" Soujun questioned as he tried to break free of Ichigo's grip, but he was not letting go "boy?!"

"Son," Ginrei asked calmly as he stood up "what's happening?"

Ichigo shook his head as he looked right at Byakuya with a frantic expression.

"Destroy the contract," Ichigo begged "I won't let go of Soujun-sama until the contract is destroyed."

Byakuya extended his hand and grabbed the contract.

"Wait, please" Aizen said calmly as he looked at Ichigo with a frown "who are you to demand such a thing? You're hurting Soujun-sama, shouldn't we call security?" he asked as he stood up to keep some distance from the table.

Ichigo shook his head; words were failing him and his heart was beating frantically, he knew he probably look pathetic while being on top of the table like a madman. He had spent the whole afternoon of the previous day at Ishida's house, he didn't sleep, he didn't shower, he didn't go to school, he fell from the motorcycle on the way towards the Kuchiki enterprise, he ran several blocks while avoiding the upset police officer that was following him and, against all odds, he managed to get just in time. He was not going to let go of Soujun's wrist, no matter what.

"Rip it to pieces," Ichigo implored to Byakuya "please."

Ginrei and Soujun exchanged a confused glance.

"I take it that your hunch was correct?" Byakuya asked.

"Hunch?!" Aizen questioned upset.

Ichigo nodded as he took a deep breath.

"He's a criminal," he explained "he has scammed several companies, he has more than one ghost bank account in the Maldives, he had been travelling here in hopes of building a new empire but to do so he'll dismember the Kuchiki enterprise to the point where all of you won't have another option but to give him your numbers," Ichigo glared at Aizen then "I bet that not even the glasses are real."

"We studied the contract, boy" Soujun scoffed before Aizen could say anything "are you suggesting-?!"

"The contract stipulates that, in case that none of you get to an agreement about the numbers regarding the alliance, Aizen will get the last word" Ichigo fumed interrupting Soujun "he was planning to turn you against each other, he was planning a family feud! That's his strategy, he's done it three times already in other countries!" he tightened the grip on Soujun's wrist "he's a wanted man."

"Is that the faith that you have in us?!" Soujun questioned upset "we would never fight against each other!"

"I'm not risking it!" Ichigo insisted angrily "you've been fighting nonstop the whole month!" he paused for a second "and you cannot make business with a criminal."

There was a heavy silence that lasted a few seconds, the Kuchikis had to admit that they have been arguing constantly the last month, they just couldn't ignore Ichigo.

"Indeed" Ginrei nodded as he snapped his fingers once.

In a second Robert, Thomas and Stewart, the heads of each security team, blocked the door.

"I demand evidence," Aizen scoffed as he paled slightly "this is nonsense!"

Ichigo scoffed.

"I sent an e-mail before coming here," he explained "you turn your cellphones off before meetings so I decided to run here instead."

"I'll be taking my leave," Aizen declared while clenching his fists "I will not be insulted by a teenage boy."

"Good luck going through Robert," Ichigo chuckled and then looked at Byakuya "please?"

Byakuya nodded and ripped the contract in half.

"Awesome" Ichigo said and the astounded faces of the Kuchiki clan were the last things he saw before everything turned black.

When Ichigo opened his eyes, several hours later, he found himself face to face with Kuchiki Soujun.

"Boy," the Kuchiki patriarch smiled kindly at him "you've been out for a long time, it's almost nighttime."

Ichigo chuckled, someone had carried him to the couch in Soujun's office and there was an ice pack on his forehead, he felt like hell.

"My family is probably wondering where I am" he said as he sat down slowly.

"We called your father," Soujun assured him "well, Byakuya did, he's on his way to pick you up."

Ichigo nodded, it was a good thing that his father was coming, he felt as if he needed a doctor.

"Robert picked up your motorcycle," Soujun mentioned as he took a seat on the couch next to Ichigo "and the police officer that was following you was given a generous compensation for letting you off the hook, don't worry about anything."

"But-!" Ichigo tried to say.

"We'll pay for the motorcycle repairs as well" Soujun interrupted him, he knew that Ichigo was a goody two shoes, so he decided to ease his worries before he could even ask.

"What about Aizen?" Ichigo asked.

"Well," Soujun smirked "turns out that you were right about everything, however…" he chuckled "he's also broke, he was going to use us to get money and run away" he shook his head "it's over now, I doubt he can pay a good lawyer to get out of prison."

Ichigo sighed relieved.

"Boy," Soujun said as he put a hand on Ichigo's shoulder "thank you."

"Anytime" Ichigo smiled.

Soujun didn't tell him at the time, but the Kuchikis were already planning a handsome reward for Ichigo.

Night had fallen at Karakura and the town was buzzing with energy. The people chatting and going back home after a hard day at work, the busy streets and the bars around town were as lively as ever, that's why no one noticed the black haired boy hiding on an abandoned park near the outskirts of the town.

"I'm here," he mumbled to himself as he leaned against a big oak tree "I'm finally inside the Kuchikis' territory."

He smirked as he took out of his pocket a worn out family picture.

"I'll find you in a matter of days," the boy promised at the picture, there were several persons on it but he focused solely on the violet eyed girl that was on it "Kuchiki Rukia."

Somewhere far from that park Kuchiki Rukia was sleeping soundly without even imagining the danger she was in.
