Mama Bird
Whenever Raine came home from being out all day, Eda would normally be curled up on the sofa watching crystal ball or she'd be taking one of her evening naps. Some days though, Raine would find their pregnant girlfriend doing… odder activities. To them they could see right through her facade of passing it off as normal, after all, they could tell she was getting more and more maternal.
Of course, she denied it most of the time.
Until she can't anymore.
October 1st, 1999
Raine had been taking many odd bard gigs during the recent months to collect extra money. That day had been particularly weird. They'd been paid a healthy amount of snails just to play in the middle of the woods, with (supposedly) no one listening.
After getting home they were mildly exhausted. They'd been instructed to go all the way to the center of the isles and just play. The person explained that they wanted the Titan to hear some music but no bard from the actual coven would do it. It was later in the evening when they greeted Hooty and entered the house.
Raine expected Eda to be somewhere around the house. Their pregnant girlfriend had put herself under a self proclaimed house arrest. She'd declared she wouldn't leave the house and go into any part of Bonesborough until after the baby was born. She explained she was worried about drawing attention to the fact they'd have a kid and that after the baby was born she'd be able to be defensive if the Emperor's Coven were to… try anything.
Yet after looking in the kitchen and doing a sweep of the upstairs, Raine found she was nowhere in the house. After a few moments of panic they stopped while looking in the kitchen again.
Outside they heard a voice. Eda.
Opening the back door, they saw Eda was down by the cliff overlooking the ocean, staring into the distance. Her hands were put down to the side, propping herself back.
"You know… it'll be interesting to see how much you like this spot. When I was a kid my Dad brought me and my sister here a lot. We used to play outside around the house and then me, her, and my Dad would sit right here and have dinner while watching the sun set…" Eda said.
Was she… talking to the baby?
Raine couldn't help but smile. It was oddly soft coming from Eda, but they weren't complaining.
Raine stepped outside the house, slowly closing the door to keep it quiet. Best not to scare Eda, especially while she was having such a tender moment.
"I think one day me and Raine… and you. We'll have dinner out here on days like this, hopefully less cold because dang it's been chilly out, but I doubt you understand anything I mean," Eda chuckled.
Raine creeped up beside Eda and moved to sit down, causing Eda to jump back in surprise.
"Geez! Raine, when did you get home?!" She exclaimed.
"Just a few minutes ago, I couldn't help but notice you were talking to our baby, so I left you two alone for a minute," Raine said, smirking knowingly to their girlfriend. Eda rolled her eyes.
"I wasn't, I don't know what you're talking about," She said.
"Mhm, deny it all you want, I saw and heard you," Raine giggled at this. Even if she was denying it, they still found it cute.

When Raine came in that night they could already hear the sound of music from upstairs. It easily answered their every day question of where Eda was.
After spending a few moments with Hooty to chat they made their way upstairs. Once they were upstairs they could make out the music easier, and could tell it was coming from their bedroom.
That song…
It was that song from the playlist.
Entering the room Raine found Eda leaned up against the nest, staring at her scroll. Her back was facing the door and Raine could clearly hear 'It's All Coming Back to me Now' blaring from Raine's record player placed beside the nest.
Approaching her from behind they peeked at her scroll. It took everything in them not to burst out giggling.
Eda had Penstagram pulled up and was looking at… baby clothes! At least they gathered that since she was scrolling through an account from a private business that sold baby clothes.
"You want me to go pick some of those up?" Raine asked. Eda quickly shut her scroll and flipped around to her partner.
"Titan! What is it with you and sneaking up on me lately?!" Eda exclaimed while Raine laughed.
"I'm always curious to what you do while I'm gone," Raine said. Eda sighed.
"Well no, I don't. Your Moms have given us plenty of your old clothes," She rolled her eyes, a glimmer of sarcasm peaking through.
"Right right, alright then," Raine joined Eda in the nest, grabbing a blanket and throwing it on top of them both, "Would you mind pulling that back up? The outfits were really cute."
Eda, without a worded response, opened her scroll again to the Penstagram page.

The wind was howling outside when Raine made their mad dash into the house. They neglected to even speak to Hooty, fearing the wind would blow them away. When the door slammed shut they took a breath before slumping against the door.
The weather had slowly been getting more and more bizarre lately. Growing to be dramatically cold for where they were, located so close to the boiling sea.
After they composed themselves, they searched the house for Eda. Not anywhere downstairs, that was for sure. They headed upstairs and found themselves outside their bedroom. Turning the knob they opened the door to find Eda.
She was fast asleep in the middle of the nest that was now stashed with probably just about every single blanket and pillow in the house. Had she been… nesting?
Raine adored their girlfriend so much. This was adorable to witness.
They walked over to the side of the nest and moved a blanket to uncover Eda, who immediately shivered. Her eyes flickered open and she let out a groan.
"R-Raine..?" She mumbled, raising a hand to rub her eyes. Raine chuckled, helping her sit up.
"Good evening, sleepy head," They said, "Is Mama Bird making her nest more comfortable with all the blankets and pillows?"
"Huh? No! Have you been outside?!" Eda grabbed the blanket from Raine's hands and wrapped herself back in it, "It's freezing cold."
"I suppose that makes sense," Raine said, "Well in either case what would you like for dinner?"
"Eyeball noodle soup," Eda leaned forward into Raine's arms, "I'm sleepy."
"I can tell," The bard whispered to her, kissing her forehead.
"You want to help cook or do you want to go back to sleep?" Raine asked. Eda grumbled before sitting back up.
"I'll help, just give me a minute," Eda said. Raine sat down in front of her. They could tell she wanted to help, but lately it was obvious she was growing exhausted. They figured they could make extra so it'd be in the fridge for the next week and a half for her to get if she was hungry.
"You know," Raine said, taking a part of Eda's hair and running their fingers through it, "I don't mind doing things for you. You've been exhausted lately, and I can tell." They glanced down at her stomach and placed a hand on it. She jerked back slightly under their touch.
"I'm not, just a sleepy owl right now," Eda mumbled, slowly falling back forward into Raine's embrace as her eyes struggled to stay open.
Barely a minute passed before she was asleep again in Raine's arms.
They figured gathering blankets and pillows was definitely an exhausting task if it meant going back and forth throughout the entire house.
She would be a great mom.
October 20th, 1999
One thing was clear when Raine entered the Owl House that day. Eda wasn't home.
Right when they walked in they found the portal door to the human realm open. An odd occurrence, but they figured she'd just gone to get something at the store.
Trusting she'd be back in a minute, they sat on the sofa and waited, keeping an eye on the door.
When half an hour passed without Eda returning, they grew worried.
Another 15 minutes, that's what they told themself.
By the time they finally stood up to walk through the portal door, the sun was starting to set outside.
Worry was filling their entire core. Was she okay? Had something happened to her? Was she hurt? Had something happened to the baby?!
They stared into the woods just outside the old house the door was placed in. It was breezy, but somehow warmer than back home.
Looking to the ground they found footprints from Eda's boots. Once they discovered the tracks they realized she'd gone into the woods.
Panic set in.
They rushed to follow the tracks, spending several minutes flying through the forest. Eventually they heard the steady stream of water flowing. They were approaching a creek.
They were still stepping forward when they felt their foot almost step on a hard object not like anything before. Looking down they realized it was the portal key.
Oh no.
They reached down and grabbed the key before taking a few more steps forward. Raine was going to start running again but stopped when they heard very muffled sniffles.
Raine stopped walking. Looking through the underbrush towards the location of the creek they realized who was sitting beside it on a log.
Eda.
Surprised, they stepped through the bushes and approached her.
"Eda? What happened? Are you alright? I was worried sick!" Eda whipped her head around to Raine. Her eyes were red and puffy and it was apparent she'd been crying for a while.
"R-Raine?" She said, "I-I'm sorry, I-I was going to come home b-before you got back b-but I… I got lost. A-And I couldn't find the k-key!"
Raine rushed forward to where Eda was sitting. They embraced her as she continued to sob.
"I was j-just wanting s-s-some fresh air! And I dropped t-the key and- and-" She choked on her breath, getting snot and tears on Raine's sweater vest.
"Shhh… it's okay, things happen," Raine gently said, "You're safe. That's all that matters." They lifted her face back up and caressed her cheek, "Now. Why were you all alone in the middle of the woods in the first place?"
"I…" Eda took a moment to wipe the tears from her eyes, "I just… I was thinking and decided to take a stroll… I-I must've dropped the key but I was t-too tired to look so I panicked."
"Alright," Raine said, staring into her golden eyes, "Well, what were you thinking about?"
Eda was silent, barely looking back at Raine she opened her mouth before closing it again. She sat for several moments, attempting over and over again to speak before she finally let out a sentence.
"I've been feeling a lot of weird things lately… that are… maternal," Eda said, "It's just… a lot. I never had thought I'd be in this position." They felt a heaviness in their chest.
"Are you okay?" Raine asked.
"I-I… I'm fine," Eda said, "Just… super emotional."
"Okay," Raine said, "If you're ever not okay that's okay, I'll help in any way I can. You know that, right?"
"I do know that," Eda said.
"Good," Raine said. They stood up and scooped their pregnant girlfriend up in their arms, who, despite the extra weight from her belly, didn't weigh much more, "Mind if I walk a fair lady back to her castle?"
"Raine, we're not in school anymore," Eda started giggling, pushing her hands up against their face, "Also dang I forgot how strong you are."
"All for you, my Snapdragon. And for our little blossom," They smiled, blowing a raspberry on Eda's stomach. She burst out laughing in response. This went on for several moments as they began to walk away with her.
"Of course," Eda eventually sighed out when the laughter from her settled.
…
Through all the confusing emotions and changes in the past few months, Eda knew one thing.
And it was that Raine didn't know how good of a liar she was.
