Chapter 7: First Words
A few weeks had passed and Pocahontas became somewhat of a celebrity in her village for being the mother of a pale-skinned child. Whenever she went around with Songaa in her sling, she attracted some attention from the other villagers.
Some wanted to get a closer look at Songaa, tickling him and stroking his soft white skin. The children wanted to take turns holding him, much to Pocahontas's amusement. However, she also noticed other villagers giving them pointed looks and she could her them whispering amongst themselves.
Nevertheless, she refused to let any rumor get the better of her. Currently, she was making beaded necklaces with Flit helping her pick out the beads. Nearby, Songaa was busy cuddling with Meeko, snuggling in his furry bushy tail.
"Aaaabbbaaa..." Songaa gurgled, snuggling close to the raccoon who made a purring sound. Pocahontas couldn't help but smile at the adorable sight. "Oh, Songaa..." She giggled. Flit squeaked as he picked beads with his long thin beak.
"Pocahontas!" The latter turned to see two children, a boy and a girl approaching them. "Rainbow, Kai!" Pocahontas spoke in surprise. "What brings you here?" Rainbow, the girl stepped forward. "We're sorry for disturbing you, but we came to see the baby." She asked, shyly. "Can we play with him?" Kai asked.
Pocahontas smiled. "He's playing with Meeko, over there." She gestured to the baby who was still cuddling Meeko. "Aww, he's so cute!" Rainbow squealed as she kneeled to Songaa. The baby looked up at Rainbow and tilted his round head curiously.
"Hello..." Rainbow greeted shyly. "Isn't he cute, Kai?" She asked her friend who kneeled next to her. "I guess..." Kai replied, looking at Songaa curiously. "I never seen eyes so blue before." Songaa blinked at them before he smiled.
"He's smiling at us!" Rainbow cooed. "He's so sweet!" She ticked the baby on his chubby cheek, making him giggle. "Is it true you found him in the forest?" Kai asked Pocahontas. "Yes." Pocahontas replied, looking at her son who was now reaching out to Rainbow who cooed and tickled his chubby belly.
"Well, I still wonder what tribe has pale skin and blue eyes." Kai asked as he looked at Songaa. "I never seen any other boy who has features like him." It seems Songaa heard him as he turned to him and crawled over.
Kai grew surprised as he saw Songaa crawl to him and smile. "Aaaauuuu..." He cooed gently, waving. Kai couldn't help but smile at this cute sight. "I have to admit...he is rather cute." He pointed out.
Pocahontas chuckled. "I'm glad you both think so." She spoke up. "How are your parents?" "They're doing fine." Rainbow replied as she continued to tickle Songaa. "How about you?" "How does it feel to be a mother?" She asked.
"Well, it's something new to me..." Pocahontas admitted. "I have seen many mothers with children." She smiled at Songaa. "I never thought I would become one myself." "Well, it shouldn't be that hard." Kai replied. "I've seen you take care of Meeko..."
Meeko chittered in annoyance while Flit made a chirping sound that sounded like laughter. Pocahontas chuckled. "Yes, that's true..." She replied. "But, this is the first time I'm caring for a baby like any other mother."
She picked up Songaa and cuddled him close to her. "And I made a promise that I will always be by his side, no matter what." She added, kissing her son on the cheek. Songaa giggled and hugged his mother, wrapping his chubby arms around her neck.
"Aww..." Rainbow cooed. "I think you make a great mother, Pocahontas." The latter smiled. "I hope so." She replied.
(5 mins later...)
"Coo-chee, coo-chee, coo!" Grandmother Willow cooed as she tickled Songaa with her vines. The baby squealed in delight and squirmed, waving his chubby arms and kicking his little legs. Pocahontas couldn't help but giggle at the adorable sight.
After doing her chores, she decided to visit Grandmother Willow in her glade and took Songaa, Meeko and Flit with her. The old willow tree was more than happy to see the cute little baby again, fussing over and tickling him all over.
"He's getting stronger every day." Grandmother Willow pointed out as her vines caressed Songaa's cheeks, making him coo softly. "Yes, he is..." Pocahontas replied. "It's been over 3 weeks since I found him and it feels like he's growing up so fast."
"I can see that!." The willow tree chuckled as she lifted Songaa up with two of her strongest vines and bounced him gently, making him giggle. "I mean, once Songaa is grown up, I won't be able to carry him like this!" Flit squeaked in reply while Meeko chittered.
Pocahontas giggled as well. "It's times like this I wished Songaa would stay a baby forever..." She explained. "Innocent and pure..." Grandmother Willow patted her gently with one vine. "You know that is not possible, my child." She reminded. "We all must grow in our own time."
"Do not dwell in the past or be afraid of what will yet happen." She added. "Instead, enjoy what you have in the present." Pocahontas smiled. "I know." She replied. "I'm just scared..." "It is natural for a mother to feel this way..." Grandmother Willow replied. "But, the trials will be worth it."
Pocahontas nodded and smiled as she watched her son squeal and giggle in Grandmother Willow's vines. Flit fluttered about while Meeko wagged his furry tail in amusement. Suddenly, the wind blew gently into the glade, causing the vines to sway to the breeze. Songaa made gurgling sounds as he felt the wind tickle him and making his hair frizzy.
Grandmother Willow chuckled. "You are a lively one, aren't you?" She asked the little baby boy. Pocahontas giggled. "He certainly is..." She added. Songaa giggled as Grandmother Willow gently lowered him down.
Then, he turned to look at his mother and smiled. Before Pocahontas knew it, he reached out to her with his chubby arms and did something that took her and Grandmother Willow completely by surprise. "Momma!" Songaa called.
Pocahontas froze and her eyes grew wide. Meeko's jaws and Flit's beak dropped in shock. "W-What...?" Pocahontas whispered; shock registered in her tone. "Songaa...what did you say...?" "Momma!" Songaa giggled. "Momma!"
Tears welled up in Pocahontas's eyes and a wide smile appeared on her face. "Your first word..." She whispered. "You said your first word...!" She picked up her son and hugged him close to her. "You can speak!" She cried out in joy. "You called me mother!"
Flit and Meeko squeaked in delight, Grandmother Willow chuckled and all the while, Songaa squealed in delight, hugging her back. "Momma!" He cooed. "Yes...Songaa..." Pocahontas replied, snuggling close to him. "I'm your mother..."
