A Bare-Knuckled Brawl

Ash, Cobalt, and Green lead the group as they walk toward Stow-On-Side, with Gary and Serena logging behind just as they walk past a wooden sign. As they pass by a huge arch, they come across a small desert town.

Gary: Well, so far as I know, this is the only town for miles. This must be the place, right?

Ash: I think so. Serena?

Serena: *checks PokeNav* Let's see…..Yeah, this is Stow-On-Side.

Cobalt: Hell yeah! And that means Battle Frontier!

Ash: So that means we should put in some extra training.

Gary: *nods* Alright, then. You guys get started on training. I'll book us in at the Pokemon Center.

Ash and Serena nod as Gary walks away, eliciting them both to release the rest of their Pokemon. However, as Ash's party greeted their trainer, the rest of them besides Cobalt, Green, and Psi stared at Jaws in shock and disbelief… Especially when they decided to playfully bite down on Ash's head, despite the boy's disagreement.

Ash: AW COME ON, JAWS! I AM NOT A SNACK!

Yami: Uh…. Guys, I try to be mostly accepting, but… What in Arceus's name is that?!

Green: Guys, this is the newest member of our party. Meet Jaws, they're a Dracovish. A fossil Pokemon from here in Galar.

Ash: And someone that loves to bite my head when I send them, may I add.

Kabu: How….. Peculiar.

Aiden simply looked at the frankenstein-like fish as they also stared back with their beady eyes. There was no way that thing could be real.

Hunter: Is….Jaws, was it?... Are they a Water-type? Because they're one odd looking Water Type.

Psi: Actually, based on the fossils that were used, I hypothesize that Jaws is a Water and Dragon type.

Kestrel: THIS?! This is a Dragon-type?!

Meanwhile, Azula was watching with slight apprehension at the new member. Most water types that she saw were the epitome of beauty. This thing looked like an abomination of science. However, Jaws then let Ash go and started to roll around in the sand before charging into the nearby pond.

Ash: Restored it from fossils, they went on a rampage only to find they wanted to swim. The scientists got the data for them, so we decided to let them tag along.

Gary then comes back out, smirking to see the other Pokemon out as he hands th other two humans room keys.

Gary: Alright, got us some rooms. Now, Ashy-boy, let's get to training.

And so, both Gary and Ash's parties traded blow in a large sparring match. Blastoise was training the Pokemon in endurance and critical hit aiming and Jolteon was running around the area, trying to teach mor recent members like Kestrel, Hunter, and Kabu precision striking. The only odd ones out being Jaws and Arctozolt, who were simply battling…

I mean, they would if the only move Jaws would use wasn't Hydro Pump.

Gary: Alright, Arctozolt, use Bolt Beak!

Bolt Beak was the move Arctozolt had used just earlier. Gary had decided to name it himself as his Pokemon's beam coated in electricity and it charged… Only to be countered by Hydro Pump.

Gary: *annoyed* Seriously, Ash? Doesn't that thing know anything else besides Hydro Pump?

Ash: I'm not sure. Hydro Pump's the only move I've seen Jaws use.

Cobalt: Hey, Jaws! Can you do, like…. Another move?

Jaws: *stops Hydro Pump* Another move?

Green: Yeah, something else besides Hydro Pump. Like maybe Aqua Tail? Super Fang? Dragon Breath? Literally, anything else.

Jaws: Well….. I do have this…

Suddenly, the normally goofy Pokemon frowned and growled feral much to Ashs surprise as Jaws then ran forth. Their bottom jaw glowed light blue as Jaws then bit down hard onto Arctozolt, causing it to yell in pain before Jaws let go and acted as jovial as usual. The others were… surprised, to say the least.

Serena: Did you all see that?!

Gary: It looked liike Jaws used some kind of Water-type Bite variation.

Yami: They may look weird, but Jaws can pull off one hell of a Fishious Rend.

Ash: Fishious Rend?

Yami: Yeah, the move Jaws used. Fishious Rend. That's what I'm naming it.

Green: Hey, aren;t we supposed to vote on stuff like that?

Ash: Okay, fine. We'll vote. Gary, Serena, everyone. All in favor of calling the move Fishious Rend, *raises hand* raise your hand.

Much to literally nobody's surprise, everyone else put up a hand, wing, or paw in agreement.

Green: ….Alright, just wanted to make sure we voted.

After another hour or so of training, Ash and his group headed for bed to wake the next morning. After some directions from a town local, the teens had made their way to a dojo outside of town, Ash reognizing it as a facility due to the Battle Frontier logo on the door.

Ash: Well, this is it.

Cobalt: Alright. Let's see what this place is all about.

Ash then opens the door, revealing two females on the other side of a large training mat. One of them being a woman with blue eyes, short blonde hair, and an attire consisting of a black and red training gi with blue leggings, white cloth wrapped around her waist, and red shoes.

The other person was a much younger girl with tan skin, platinum blonde hair, and grey eyes. She had an exercise attire similar to the woman, though it more belonged to an athlete with its colors consisting of black, white, and orange, along with a black and orange ribbon tied to her head. Next to the girl was a cream colored octopus Pokemon with an orange patch on its face, orange dots on its head, blue eyes, and black bumps on the ends of its arms resembling boxing gloves.

Woman: I see your training has not grown rusty since I've been gone. *bows* I have the utmost pride for you.

Girl: *bows* Thank you, mother.

Ash: Uh, hey! Excuse me.

The two looked over to the group, with Ash in the lead as he walked up to the pair.

Girl: Can we help you?

Ash: Um, yeah… Are either of you the Frontier Brain here?

Woman: That would be me, young one.

She then proceeds to lash a karate chop at the boy, who flinches back and causes his Pokemon to growl at her.

Azula: Hands away from the kid!

Woman: I am the Arena Tycoon, Greta! Martial arts master and Frontier Brain! And I assume you are a challenger?

Ash: Uh, yeah. I'm Ash Kethum from Kanto.

Greta: *Ash Ketchum?... The same boy who managed to beat Noland and Articuno?

Ash: Yeah?

Greta: Great: …*smiles* Scott told me about you. I've been waiting for you. *gestures* Allow me to introduce to you my daughter.

Gary: Daughter?

Girl: *bows* Hello. I am Bea, the Stow-On-Side gym leader.

Serena: You're a gym leader? But you're like our age.

Ash: Well, Brock and Misty are gym leaders and Brock's 16.

Bea: It's a pleasure. *gestures to Pokemon* This is my partner, Clobbopus.

Clobbopus: *waves* Hello.

Ash: *takes out Pokedex* Another Galar Pokemon…

Pokedex: Clobbopus, the Tantrum Pokemon. A Fighting type. Clobbopus is very curious, but its means of investigating things is to try to punch them with its tentacles, which tear off with minimal effort.

Greta: Well then, since you have arrived, shall we have our battle?

Bea: You best be warned. My mother is unlike any trainr you've faced.

?: Course she's not…

The group then turned around, finding Scott walking into the arena.

Scott: She's trained you to be a gym leader at age 12.

Ash: Scott!

Scott: Hey, Ash. Hope I'm not too late.

Greta:Actually, you are just in time, Scott. You may sit with Bea and the others, the Ketchum and I will battle.

Nodding, Scott walked with Bea, Gary, Azula, Kestrel, and Serena as they sat in the bleachers as Ash, Cobalt, and Green approached one side of the battlefield as Greta took center on the side she was already on as the referee came forth.

Referee: Alright! The Frontier battle of Arena Tycoon Greta and Ash the challenger shall now begin! Each side will use 2 Pokemon and the match will end when one side's Pokemon are unable to battle! Furthermore, only the challenger may substitute their Pokemon! Will both sides let out their Pokemon!

Greta: Hariyama! *throws Pokeball* Show your spirit!

Greta's Pokeball opened to reveal a large, bulky Pokémon with narrow eyes and rounded ears. On its head is a short, triangular crest and dark blue hair grows across the tops of its eyes, around the head crest, and extends down its back to form a long ponytail. The upper half of its body is cream-colored, while the lower half is dark blue. It also had large hands with three fingers and small, two-toed feet, both of which were orange. Surprised at this, Serena scanned the Pokemon.

Pokedex: Hariyama, the Arm Thrust Pokémon. A Fighting type. Hariyama's impressive bulk is actually all muscle. When its muscles are flexed, they are hard as a rock. It is said that one hit from a Hariyama can send a 10-ton truck flying.

Gary: So if she's using a Fighting-type, a Psychic, Flying, or Fairy type would be best.

Serena: I hope Ash wins this…

Ash: Okay, then… *throws Pokeball* Kabu, I choose you!

Ash's newly caught Marowak came forth, twirling his bone before settling it on his shoulder and flashing a smirk at the woman.

Greta: A Marowak… Interesting choice. I also appreciate the kind of moxie it takes to stare me down.

Referee: Let the battle begin!

Greta: Hariyama, use Bulk Up now!

The Arm Thrust Pokeon coated itself in red energy before flexing multiple times, the aura disappearing as it stopped and looked much more pumped up.

Ash: Kabu, Bonemerang!

With a yell, Kabu threw his bone towards Hariyama, which managed to only graze its cheek. But as the bone was returning…

Greta: Use Arm Thrust!

Hariyama leapt forward, reeling its arm back before thrusting it into Kabu's stomach, sending him back and making him miss his chance to catch the bone.

Ash: Kabu, no!

Greta: Use Smelling Salts!

Ash: Kabu, grab your bone!

The Marowak swiftly avoided the charging Pokemon and grabbed his discarded bone, smirking and flexing his hand to taunt the Hariyama.

Green: Good going, Kabu!

Cobalt: You got this!

Kabu: *nods* Hm.

Greta: Pretty cool, but we're in this to win this. Hariyama, Focus Punch!

Hariyama concentrated as its fist glowed blue before jumping towards Kabu.

Ash: Close the gap with Brutal Swing!

Kabu's bone glowed pink as he then swung it in a circle, spinning towards his opponent. Due to Kabu's size, the Brutal Swing managed to strike Hariyama's ankle, making it trip over and land on his side.

Bea: That's odd. Brutal Swing is a Dark-type move. Shouldn't that not be so effective against Hariyama?

Scott: Maybe, but it seems that with the right precision and timing, any move can be effective.

Greta: Hariyama! Are you okay?!

Hariyama nods to his trainer, making her sigh in relief.

Greta: Now, let us see how they deal with us now. Use Bulk Up!

Ash: While its getting up, use Bone Club!

As the Arm Thrust Pokemon was trying to stand up, Kabu quickly closed the gap by slamming his bone on its head. The bigger Pokemon remained still while Kabu climbed down. After a few seconds, Hariyama fell forward unconscious, much to Bea's surprise.

Referee: Hariyama is unable to battle, the winner is Marowak!

Ash: Alright! Way to go, Kabu!

Kabu: Hmm… A worthy adversary. But not worthy enough to defeat me.

Bea: Amazing… I've never seen anyone beat Mother's Hariyama.

Gary: That's Ash for ya.

Greta: *recalls Hariyama* You have done well, Hariyama. Now, rest. I must admit, Ash. You're giving me an amazing fight.

Ash: Same here, Greta. But just so we're clear, I plan to win.

Greta: Well… So do I. And now, I shall show you the vast extent of my Pokemon's power. *throws Pokeball* Grapploct, let's go!

And in place of Hariyama now stood blue octopus-like Pokémon with a yellow jagged eyemask-like marking, suckers, and what appears to be a breathing organ on the side of its head. It has a dark blue underside and cyan eyes as four of its eight tentacles act as arms, three act as legs and one is wrapped around its waist. Curious, Ash takes out his Pokedex to scan it.

Pokedex: Grapploct, the Jujitsu Pokémon and the evolved form of Clobbopus. A Fighting type. With a body made of pure overlapping muscles, Grapploct possesses very powerful grip strength. It enjoys fighting opponents, and moves onto the land to fight them before returning to its ocean home. Its natural rival is Golisopod.

Azula: Man, what a bruiser.

Kestrel: Eh… I don;t think he looks so tough.

Gary: *to Bea* So, that big guy is your little guy's evolved form?

Bea: *nods* Yes. In fact, I received Clobbopus as a gift from Mother last year for my birthday. He wishes to evolve and join the ranks of my Machamp.

Scott: Oh boy… Looks like Greta's taken off the kid gloves.

Referee: Battle resume!

Greta: Close Combat!

Glaring, the octopus surged forth, ready to pummel onto Kabu. But just as it was about to…

Ash: Kabu, use Detect!

A gleam occurred in the Marowak's eyes before it leaned out of the way of Grapploct's strikes. The cephalopod became surprised at this as Ash's starters stared in amazement.

Green: Woah… When did you learn Detect?

Kabu: I always have, green one. I justnever used it in battle due to having an unfair advantage.

Though Kabu seemed confident, Ash could tell that last Brutal Swing took a lot out of him and he knew Kabu needed to rest if they were to win this.

Ash: Come back for a bit, Kabu.

Though reluctant, Kabu accepted being recalled to his ball as Ash got out a new one.

Greta: Aw, growing afraid, are we? Perhaps maybe you should quit now while you're ahead?

Ash: *smiles* Nice try, Greta. But I'm not giving up yet. *throws Pokeball* Okay, Jaws, let's go!

As the ball opened, Ash stood frozen as his Dracovish was standing behind him, chomping on his head like last night.

Jaws: *chuckles* Hi~.

The boy immediately began to squirm in their grapes while Green tried pulling Ash out while Cobalt proceeded to try and force Jaws's mouth open.

Green: Dude, come on! Quit it!

Cobalt: Can;t you see we're in the middle of a battle?!

Grapploct: What the-?

Scott: Well…. There's a Pokemon you don;t see everyday.

Gary: It's called a Dracovish, it's one of a kind like my Arctozolt.

Greta: Well, this may be interesting.

Ash: Alright, you had your fun, Jaws. Now let's get to the battle!

Nodding, Jaws released their trainer as they then charged forth, Grapploct still confused at the sight.

Grapploct: I-...*sighs* I uh- I don't understand. W-what is this supposed to be? I'm confused. You know what, it doesn't even matter! 'Cause I'm about to-

However, since Grapploct said he was confused, a text box pops up, saying "Grapploct punched himself in the face"!

Grapploct: Wha-! Come on! Really? *sighs* I guess it's the rules…. *punches himself* Is it working? *punches himself again* Am I doing it right? *punches himself a third time* Wow….. I am….. REALLY strong!

Greta: Okay, enough of that, Grapploct! Liquidation, now!

Grapploct shook his head and focused, his four tentacles swirling with ater as he then charged at the approaching Jaws, who just kept charging.

Ash: Use Fishious Rend!

With a frown, Jaws stood their ground and opened their mouth as their jaw glowed blue. However, as Grapploct leapt to strike, Jaws trapped the Jujitsu Pokemon in their mouth.

Greta: What?!

The cephalopod sqiurmed as his head remained in Jaws's mouth as the Dracovish thrashed their head back and forth.

Greta: Grapploct, Close Combat!

However, Grapploct didn;t strike as he struggled to escape, much to the woman's surprise.

Bea: Grapploct can't hear Mother's commands inside of that Pokemon's mouth!

Scott: impressive.

Ash: Now, use Hydro Pump!

Grapploct was then ejected by a large stream of water fired at him, sending him crashing into a wall. However, this just made Grapploct even angrier even though it gained a nasty bruise.

Gary: That Fishious Rend really messed up Grapploct.

Scott: Jaws here must have the Strong Jaw ability.

Serena: Strong Jaw?

Gary: Strong Jaw is an ability that boosts the power of biting moves like Super Fang, Crunch, and in this case, Fishious Rend.

Greta: Impressive strategy… But we will not go down that easy! Get in close, Grapploct!

Ash: Jaws, Ice Fang!

Jaws's teeth coated themselves in ice as they charged forth while Grapploct scurried across the floor swiftly towards the Dracovish.

Greta: Use Octolock!

Ash: Wha- Octolock?!

Gary: Octolock?

Suddenly, Grapploct leapt onto Jaws and then proceed to wrap his tentacles around them, two of his foot tentacles wrapping around his legs to stop them from moving.

Ash: Jaws, no!

Scott: There it is… The move that makes Greta next to impossible to defeat. Jaws charging forth is what Grapploct wanted.

Azula: Oh no….

The boy looked at Jaws as they struggled to free themself, though everytime they struggled, Grapploct's grapple only seemed to tighten.

Cobalt: It's no good! Every time Jaws moves, the hold only gets tighter!

Ash: Use Hydro Pump!

The Dracovish opened their mouth strenuously to attack, only to come up with bupkis.

Serena: Jaws…. Jaws can;t move.

Bea: That's the danger of Octolock. It can completely immobolize a target.

Ash: *growls*... Fishious Rend!

Jaws opened his mouth one more time, however… Greta smiled as they did.

Greta: Now, Close Combat on its mouth!

Green: What?!

Graploct then repeatedly struck Jaws in the mouth, the pain being next to unbearable along with the pressure of Octolock. Eventually, Jaws stopped struggling, eliciting Grapploct to let them go as they then fell over, fainted.

Referee: Dracovish is unable to battle, the winner is Grapploct!

Gary: Woah….

Kestrel: Such power….

Defeated and utterly guilty, Ash recalled Jaws back to their ball.

Ash: I'm sorry, Jaws…. How did she know to strike there?

Green: ….*realizes* It's because of Fishious Rend.

Ash: Huh?

Cobalt: Jaws's moves so far are Hydro Pump, Fishious Rend, and Ice Fang. All of those moves have to do with their mouth. Since that's their only means of attack…

Green: It's like a big weak spot for any counter strike. We have to find a way to work against it.

Ash: We will…. *throws Pokeball* Okay, Kabu! You're up!

Ash's Marowak came out from his abll once more. Though as he looked at Grapploct, the two shared a glare with one another, recognizing each other's strength and determination. Seeing this, Greta gave the boy a smirk.

Greta: You put up a pretty awesome fight, Ash: But I'm just a few moves away from beating you.

However, as he stood with the guilt on him, Ash smirked as he gained a newfound determination. After all, he needed to win to be a better trainer for Cobalt, Jaws, Kabu, and all of his other Pokemon.

Ash: You know something, Greta? I was going to say the same thing to you, except I'm going to do it with fewer moves.

Greta: Is that so? Well, I'm just gonna have to prove you wrong. Grapploct, use Liquidation!

Ash: Use Detect, then Bone Club!

Kabu dodged the water strikes with ease as he then slammed his bone across Grapploct's face, sending him back a bit.

Greta: Focus Energy!

Grapploct then clenches his entire body, causing him to be cascaded in an orange glow that quickly vanishes.

Green: Ah, great! Now he can make critical hits much more easily!

Ash: Don;t worry, Green. Kabu can handle this… I know it.

Kabu nodded back to his trainer as he prepared himself as Grapploct approached.

Greta: Use Octolock!

Like before, Grapploct scurried swiftly to Kabu and grabbe dhim by all four lims with his tentacles, making him drop his bone. However, much to Greta, Bea, and Grapploct's surprise… Kabu didn;t fight back. Instead, he just stared at him instantly.

Greta: Go for it!

Grapploct then got onto his back, Kabu still in his clutches as he began wrapping his tentacles more around the Marowak.

Gary: Kabu's not trying to break free…

Bea: But why?

Ash: Concentrate, Kabu. Don;t struggle and sync up with Grapploct's movements… This is how we break the Octolock…

Greta: *questioning* What are you doing?...

As the tentacles wrapped more around the Marowak, he simply lied there and waited… However, just as the tentacles were about to tighten…

Ash: Brutal Swing NOW!

With a nod, Kabu let out a yell as he grabbed Grapploct's arm tentacles and then rolled to flip them over. With a buck of his waist to get Grapploct off of him, Kabu's hands glowed pink as he then spun while holding the Jujitsu Pokemon, slamming him against the walls as he careened across the field like a top.

Greta: Grapploct!

Grapploct: *as he spins* I'm – gonna – be – sick!

Gary: INGENIUS!

Serena: Huh?

Gary: Ash didn;t have Kabu fight against the Octolock because he wanted him to wait for the right moment. The second Grapploct tightens its grip, he had Kabu strike while it was vulnerable, dealing serious damage.

Bea: *surprised* Oh my…

Ash: Finish it!

With one last yell, Kabu let go as he spun, sending Grapploct into the wall and almost touching the ceiling as he backflipped and reclaimed his strewn bone. Grapploct flipped as he fell down the wall before settling on the floor and groaning in pain, struggling to get up before falling unconscious.

Referee: Grapploct is unable to battle, the winner is Marowak! And as such, the match goes to Ash, the challenger!

Cobalt: Alright!

Green: Hell yeah, let's go!

Serena: Ash did it!

Bea gave a smile at the boy as he congratulated his Ground-type.

Ash: Thanks a lot, Kabu. You were amazing.

Kabu: Of course, Trainer. Once again, we are victorious.

Ash was a little weirded out by Kabu calling him "Trainer", but… It didn;t seem to hurt more than when Pikachu called him "Human". Greta retcalled Grapploct to his ball, giving him a silent thanks before walking over to Ash with a respectable smile.

Greta: Well done, Ash. You have beaten me. And technically in less moves than I.

She then reached behind her, ulling out another gold coin like Noland had.

Greta: Therefore, I present to you the Guts Symbol.

Ash gives her his gratitude as he takes the symbol and puts it in his symbol case.

Scott, Gary, and the others joined up with them, Gary, Serena, and Ash's two Pokemon joining the boy as he recalled Kabu.

Scott: Great battle, Ash. You have two of your symbols already. You are making tremendous progress on your journey.

Ash: Thanks, Scott,

Bea: I… I'm sorry that you lost, Mother.

Greta: *smiles* Don;t be. It was a great battle. I'm just happy someone finally gave me a challenge.

Ash: So, Scott, we're towards Circhester for a Pokemon Contest Serena wants to compete in. Before we get going, where do we go next?

Scott: Well, if it's contests your lady friend likes, this one's just up her alley. Your next stop is the Battle Dome, where you'll face Tucker, the most famous of our Frontier Brains. He's in the city of lights itself.

Ash: City of Lights?

Scott: I'm speaking, of course, about Nimbasa City in the Unova region. It's got neon lights, a ferris wheel, the Pokemon Musical, and it's the home of one of Unova's gym leaders; the Electric type fashion superstar Elesa. *types on PokeNav* Sending location in…

Serena: Got it just now. Thanks, Scott.

Gary: Alright, it says o the map the nearest town is Hammerlocke. So how about we head there, rest up, then make our way to Circhester?

Ash: Sounds good.

Scott:Well then, better get my passport ready. *types* I'll even call you guys a Sky Taxi. Should be here in-

Suddenly, a loud cry comes from outside, catching everyone's attention.

Scott: Well, that was fast.

As they all head outside, Ash and his group gape at the sight of a large dark black and purple bird with a metallic sheen perched atop some sort of large basket. Surprised, Ash scans it with his Pokedex.

Pokedex: Corviknight, the Raven Pokémon and the final evolved form of Rookidee. A Flying and Steel type. With their great intellect and flying skills, these Pokémon very successfully act as the Galar region's airborne taxi service. Its shimmering black steel body daunts opponents and causes fear.

Serena: Woah. So big…

Gary: And environmentally friendly.

Greta: Good luck, Ash. If anyone can beat the Frontier, it's you.

Bea: Clobbopus and I will be rooting for you.

Clobbopus: Yeah, kick their asses!

Green: *chuckles* It's funny bcause of child swears.

Ash: Thanks, Greta. Bea. Maybe we'll see each other again.

Greta: Perhaps.

Ash then recalled Green, Azula, and Kestrel as he, Cobalt, Serena, and Gary climbed into the basket, allowing the large bird to cry and fly off. Greta, Bea, and Scott waved them off as they traveled further and further from Stow-On-Side and towards Hammerlocke, where Circhester and Serena's next contest awaits…..
