CHAPTER 10. DIVINATION

Wednesday, October 8th

Hermione woke up to her alarm ringing at 7:30 am. She rolled over and turned it off. The cool morning breeze was billowing into the room from the window beside Fay's bed. Hermione looked around. The room was still pretty dark but the early morning light gave Hermione just enough light to see who was still in bed. Lucy and Fay's beds were empty and made, Lavender was fast asleep in hers and Parvati must be in the shower because her bed wasn't made yet. Hermione stretched and got out of bed. She made her bed and laid out her outfit. White shirt, grey skirt, Gryffindor tie, grey socks. She got dressed and Parvati walked into the dorm with a towel on her head.

"Morning Hermione," she said merrily. Hermione smiled.

"Morning," she replied. She went into the bathroom and washed her face and brushed her teeth. She brushed her hair and tied it up in a bun. She did her everyday makeup, concealer, mascara and lip balm and headed back into the dorm. She put on her shoes, grabbed her wand and her jumper and headed down for breakfast. She sat down next to Neville and Dean.

"Morning," she said. Neville smiled at her.

"Morning Hermione," he replied. Dean nodded at her and grinned.

"Does anyone know where Harry and Ron are?" Hermione asked.

"Ron was still asleep when I came down and Harry's bed was empty so I'm guessing extra Quidditch practice," said Dean. Hermione nodded at him.

"Thanks, Dean," she said. Hermione ate her breakfast and went back to her dorm. She grabbed her bag and headed off to the Head Boy and Girl common room.

"Hermione, wait up!" called Ron from behind her. She turned around and grinned at him.

"Hello Ron," she said. He grinned at her.

"Where are you going?" he asked her when he'd caught up with her.

"My common room," she replied. "You're welcome to join me," she added smiling. Ron grinned at her.

"I'll go grab some breakfast and I'll join you there," he replied and jogged down to breakfast. Hermione couldn't help but smile to herself. Ron sure did love food. She walked to the common room and opened the door. It was empty. Hermione sighed, relieved. She really didn't want to face Draco Malfoy today. She sat down at her desk and opened her History of Magic book. She sighed. Might as well reread their last lesson to try and remember where they were up to. By the time she'd finished reading her notes, Ron had joined her. "I hope you don't mind, I brought Harry along," he said. Hermione grinned.

"Of course, I don't mind," she replied. The three of them studied a bit and before they knew it, it was time to head down for transfiguration.

Harry, Ron and Hermione headed up to divination.

"I hate this class," grumbled Hermione. Ron grinned.

"Only because you're not the top of the class," he said teasingly. Hermione glared at him.

"I don't believe in what she teaches, how could I ever be top of the class if I think that all she says is a load of made-up jumbo," she retorted scowling. Harry and Ron laughed.

"It's only an hour, it'll go by quickly," Harry replied reassuringly. Hermione shook her head.

"It's two hours Harry," replied Hermione sighing. She smiled at him. Ron groaned.

"Two hours is too much for this class," he complained. They all grinned. They sat down by the window and got out their books.

"Good afternoon my dears," said Professor Trelawney in her whisper voice.

"Good afternoon," replied the class. Hermione sighed. This was going to be a long 2 hours.

"Everyone get your birth charts out that I asked you to prepare for this class and I will check that you've completed them correctly," she said. She then proceeded to walk around the classroom correcting everyone's work. To Hermione's surprise, she even complimented her chart. "Alright class, I will now break you up into groups depending on your zodiac signs," explained Professor Trelawney. Hermione looked at Harry and Ron. They wouldn't be in the same group sadly as they were all born in different months. Once everyone had been put into groups she continued explaining. "Now, you will be reading each other's tea leaves and trying to decipher what part of the chart they correspond to. You can use your books to try and understand the symbols." Hermione looked at Fay and grimaced. Fay giggled.

"You really don't like this class do you," she whispered. Hermione grinned.

"Do you?" she asked Fay. Fay pulled a face in response.

"Right," said Hermione taking Fay's cup and looking at it. "I see a load of wet tea leaves," she said jokingly. Fay giggled.

"Who wants to bet Professor Trelawney says that Harry has the Grimm again," Fay whispered grinning. Hermione had to stifle a laugh.

"No but more seriously, I have no idea what your tea leaves are telling me, Fay," she said exasperated. "There's a sort of sun which means happiness and I'm not sure how to interpret the rest," she said. Fay grinned.

"Let me do yours," she said taking Hermione's cup. "I see a dragon which means change I think and I see a candle, which means enlightenment. I also see a cross which means suffering, but it could just be a plus sign, who knows," she said grinning. "Professor, I'm not sure how to compare Hermione's cup to her chart," called out Fay putting her hand up. Hermione gaped at her friend.

"Why would you do that!" she hissed. Fay giggled.

"Let me see the cup and the chart please dear," said Professor Trelawney. Fay handed them to her and the two girls look at the professor. Professor Trelawney studied the cup and chart for a few moments and then her eyes seemed to glaze over.

"Professor?" Fay asked nervously. No response.

"Professor is everything ok?" Hermione asked. No response. At this point, the whole class was watching Professor Trelawney. Fay and Hermione exchanged nervous looks. All of a sudden Professor Trelawney spoke but her voice was raspy.

"Broken families, reunited. Friends and family turning on each other and distress and disappearance. Beware jealousy." Professor Trelawney coughed and shook her head. She then looked back at the cup and started to explain it. "As you can see here there is a lot of complexity in miss Granger's cup with the dragon and the candle and the cross. Comparing it to her chart you can see that all of these things will be happening soon and there is a shift in the fourth house which is the house of family." Professor Trelawney explained. The class was silent and everyone was still staring at Professor Trelawney. She frowned. "Is something wrong dear?" she asked. Hermione shook her head. The bell rang signalling the end of class. Everyone got up and put their books away.

"Professor," said Hermione in a quiet voice. "I think you just had some sort of vision," Hermione confessed. Professor Trelawney frowned.

"Thank you for telling me miss Granger, now off you go to class you don't want to be late," she said smiling at her. Hermione smiled back and went to join Harry and Ron.

"Well that was bloody strange," said Ron grinning. Harry grinned too.

"That was definitely some sort of vision or prophecy, she looked and sounded the exact same as that one time in third year when she warned me about Voldemort," said Harry. Hermione shrugged it off. The three friends made their way to their next class which was History of Magic. When they arrived Professor Binns wasn't in the room yet. They all sat down and Hermione got her books out.

"Look, McGonagall and Snape are outside the classroom talking to Professor Binns," said Ron nudging both Hermione and Harry. The three of them turned to look. Sure enough the three professors were standing outside the classroom whispering.

"What do you think they're walking about?" Hermione asked. Ron shrugged.

"Who knows," replied Harry.

"All the professors have been acting so weird this year don't you think?" Ron asked. Hermione frowned. She hadn't really noticed anything out of the usual.

"Let's just hope it has nothing to do with the three of us," she said grinning. "We've been in enough trouble to last us a lifetime." Harry and Ron grinned at her.

"You can say that again," said Harry. The three of them laughed. Just then Professor McGonagall walked into the classroom up to the front.

"Good afternoon, students," she said smiling.

"Good afternoon," everyone replied.

"Just an announcement to inform you that your divination classes are cancelled until further notice," she said shortly. The classroom was filled with murmurs.

"So is it true Professor? Did Professor Trelawney have a vision?" Lavender asked. Professor McGonagall pursed her lips.

"Yes she did but it is none of your concern," she replied. There was more murmuring. "Now, I will let you all get on with your class," she said and with that, she walked out of the room.

"What do you think that prophecy was even about?" Ron asked. Hermione rolled her eyes.

"Honestly Ron it was probably nothing important, most of the things she says are a load of crap if you ask me," Hermione replied. Harry leant towards them.

"Yeah but this was a prophecy, I don't think it's her usual stuff," added Harry.

"The prophecy about you was real," Ron reminded them. Hermione sighed.

"Well it's not as if this prophecy had anything to do with Harry, did it, so we'll all be fine," said Hermione opening her book.

"Good morning class," droaned Professor Binns.

"Now be quiet I'm trying to concentrate," Hermione hushed. Even though the class was only an hour long Hermione was struggling to concentrate. She couldn't help but think about the prophecy, which really annoyed her. She looked around the class and grinned. No one was paying attention to poor Professor Binss' class. Hermione shook her head slightly and turned her attention back to her notes. There was no need to let a stupid prophecy get in the way of her education.
