Chapter 151: The Two Faces, Part Two

The next day...

"Muto-san is dead?" Mouri received the shocking call. "I'll head there immediately."

At the Muto Second-Hand factory...

"Inspector Megure." Takagi ran in, the corpse had already been taken to the autopsy theater. "The victim is Muto Issei-san. He was the president of this second-hand shop. Mizuno-san's preliminary examination puts the time of death between 2am and 6am this morning. She said we won't know the cause of death until after the autopsy. However, the body was burnt to a crisp. Furthermore, all the teeth were removed: perhaps to delay the body's identification. We didn't find any fingerprints on the stun gun or gas container left at the crime scene."

"Inspector." Mouri entered the scene.

"Mouri-kun." Megure was surprised. "Why are you doing here?"

"I was actually hired by Muto-san's wife." Mouri explained. "

"My husband went missing a few days ago." Masako related. "Mouri-san found him last night and he returned home safely."

"And he ended up like that this morning." Takagi added.

"Masako-san, does that mean your husband left the house and came here after talking to you?" Mouri inquired.

"He said he needed to do something for work and left at around 1am." Masako replied.

"We're checking the security camera footage right now." Takagi informed.

"How did you know the victim was your husband?" Conan wondered.

"He looked the same from the back." Masako replied. "More than anything, those were his clothes."

"The culprit tried to conceal his identity." Conan pointed out.

"When you think of it that way, it is odd that they didn't change his clothes." Takagi noted.

"I can tell." Masako insisted. "That's my husband."

"If his wife says so, then it must be true." Mouri relented.

"I'll deposit your pay into your bank account." Masako told Mouri. "Goodbye." she took her leave.

"Let's start by questioning the shop employees." Conan remained skeptical.

In Issei's office later...

"Inspector Megure." Takagi returned. "There's no security camera footage of the last three days. It seems to have been deliberately erased. We also got the DNA results. The DNA on the provided toothbrush and body were a match."

"The victim was really Muto-san." Megure concluded.

After discovering the secret garage and confirming certain things with Takagi, Conan pieced everything together.

Later that night...

"We've been waiting for you, Muto Masako-san." Megure informed, turning on the spotlights they had placed beforehand inside the secret garage.

"What's the meaning of this?" Masako demanded.

"Mouri-kun." Megure turned to the younger detective. "You gave us instructions because you knew Muto's wife would come here."

Conan instantly tranquilized Mouri and began his deduction. "Muto Masako-san, allow me to be direct. Where is your husband, Muto Issei-san? You know where he is."

"I don't know what you're talking about." Masako replied.

"Muto's body has been sent to autopsy." Megure reminded.

"No, Inspector." Conan corrected. "That wasn't Muto's body."

"But the body and Muto's DNA were a match." Megure pointed out.

"Who provided that DNA sample?" Conan questioned.

"His wife provided the toothbrush he normally used." Megure responded.

"You're aware an employee here, Nonaka Sadahiko-san, has been missing since this morning." Conan stated. "Nonaka-san's toothbrush was missing from his apartment."

"You're saying the body was Nonaka's?" Megure realized.

"He was most likely killed by Masako-san's husband, Muto Issei." Conan revealed. "He was probably a thief who repeatedly used this second-hand shop as a cover. All the items here are stolen goods."

"Mouri-san is correct." Masako admitted. "My husband is a thief. After he and I reconciled, he said he'd take me with him and run. Because I hired Mouri-san, I believe he feared his crimes would be exposed. I gathered everything valuable in our home and came here. While I helped him pack, he said we'd flee overseas and wait for things to cool down. That's not all. He..."

"He summoned Nonaka-san here and knocked him out with a stun gun." Conan continued. "He disabled Nonaka-san, dressed him in his own clothes and used gasoline to murder him. This is just my deduction based on the evidence and circumstances. Furthermore, when you tried to stop him, you got that scrape under your sunglasses."

"He wasn't a loyal husband or a simple thief." Masako sighed. "He was a cold-blooded murderer. So, I have to settle this myself. The toothbrush I provided was brought here by Nonaka-san when Muto summoned him here."

"Why didn't you tell us the truth?" Megure asked.

"Probably because if Muto was thought to be dead, then nobody would go looking for him." Conan reasoned. "She could decide what to do with him without any interference."

"Will you tell us where he is?" Megure requested.

"He deserved to be punished." Masako wept.

"For murdering someone or betraying you?" Conan pressed.

"Muto was trying to kill me." Masako sobbed. "I saw it while I was helping him organize documents. He took out a life insurance policy on me for an exorbitant amount. A man like him doesn't deserve to live."

"Detective Takagi, Muto-san is inside the trunk of the silver car." Conan spotted Masako's eyes subconsciously shift to one of the cars parked nearby.

"Masako-san, I promise that man will pay for what he did." Megure swore. "You made the right choice."
