Chell immediately looked for a way out, expecting to have been dropped into a testing chamber. She couldn't see a thing. It was pitch black all around. A laser peeked out of the void and came to rest on her chest.
"There you are."
Without hesitation, Chell dove to one side, the spray of bullets missing her by mere inches.
"Could you come over here?" asked the turret.
Chell rushed up behind it and kicked it to the ground.
"Ayeayeayeaye!" it cried.
She backed away from it and into a wall of glass. Chell whipped around, and came face to face with Wheatley. Startled, she jumped back, then punched the glass in anger.
"GAH! I'm sorry! Just- please get me out of here!"
Chell grabbed the turret from the floor and chucked it at the glass. It bounced off and hit the floor.
"Tempered glass. Huh, didn't see that one coming. Okay, new plan; I'm gonna have to perform a manual override on this glass. Stand back luv!"
Wheatley straightened his tie and ran smack into the glass with a Thud. He collapsed to the ground and groaned.
"Ha, Moron." GLaDOS muttered. "Did I forget to mention that the glass I use in every testing chamber is now indestructible? Oops. Well, now you know."
Wheatley scowled at the ceiling.
"I'm not a moron!"
"Yeah. Keep telling yourself that. Maybe if you say it enough times it'll become true."
A light above Wheatley flickered on.
"But please refrain from running into the glass. I need you alive, and more importantly, conscious for this next part of the test."
A panel in the roof slid open, and a portal gun was dropped into Wheatley's arms. He just stared at it, unsure of what he should do with it.
"Good luck." GLaDOS said.
Three turrets slowly rose from the floor in front of Wheatley. His eyes filled with terror as he looked to Chell for help. She searched the room on her side of the glass to find something to help. A closed orange portal on the wall behind her caught her eye, and she knew just what to do. She pounded on the glass and pointed to it, then the ground below Wheatley. He hesitated, frantically trying to process what Chell meant. It hit him right as the turrets took aim. The portal opened and Wheatley tumbled out the other side.
Chell rushed over to him and bent down to help him up. He clutched his shoulder in pain and started screaming.
"AGH! OW! I'M DEAD! I'M BLOODY DONE FOR! OH GOD!"
She lifted Wheatley's hand from the wound to find that he indeed had been shot, and there was a decent sized hole in his shoulder that displayed exposed wiring all the way through.
"AGHH! Ohhhh, it's bad isn't it? Oh please tell me it's not that bad."
Chell carefully helped him up and glared at the ceiling.
"Sorry about that. Thank you for the highly informative test results though. I'll make sure to include 'not bullet proof' in your record for future reference."
Wheatley twitched and spark fell from his shoulder.
"Let me get that fixed up for you so we can get back to business. I've got another surprise for the both of you."
In a flash, Wheatley was snatched up into the roof and gone without a trace.
"Don't tell him, but I'm making certain modifications while he's being patched up. By the way, I didn't forget about your second surprise."
All light in the room was cut off in a second, and it went dark again. The sound of a few panels shuffling into place filled the air, and the light returned. In front of Chell was a cake, prepared neatly on a white plate and begging her to come greet it.
"Well, go on. I figured it's the least I could do to welcome you back. I know we got off on the wrong foot, so how about we let the whole 'cake is a lie' thing slide?"
Chell hesitated. GLaDOS being nice was scary enough on its own without the sudden offering of cake. Was she bribing her into staying? Or were there darker intentions behind this baked treat? She wasn't quite sure if she should trust anything from GLaDOS at this point.
"What's wrong with it? I thought that's what you wanted all this time. If you think I'm trying to poison you, then you must be joking. Why would I kill my best test subject?"
GLaDOS had a point there, which Chell really couldn't argue with. She sat down in front of the cake, grabbed a slice, took a slow, small bite. It was surprisingly good (and not deadly) for a cake made in Aperture by a homicidal robot. Chell went from small bites, to the whole piece, and two more after that. She obviously couldn't eat the whole thing in one go, and had to push it away.
"Hungry, weren't you? Well I'm glad you accept my gift. Now why don't you rest up? We've got another big day ahead of us."
A small door appeared in the wall, and opened to reveal a nice clean relaxation vault.
Chell didn't want to give into GLaDOS' tempting offer, but she had to admit that she was a bit tired. Plus, if she was gonna carry on with her escape plan tomorrow then she might as well rest while she had the opportunity. She climbed in bed and closed her eyes, allowing sleep to take her away.
