Chapter 8

Artemis's eyes fluttered closed as she heard a soft male voice chanting in another language as she began to drift off into the darkness. Her mind went back to everything that they had been through so far. Had she done enough while she had been with the company? If she hadn't then there was a good possibility that Thorin would make her stay behind, and she had been brought there by Gandalf to help with this quest. And she knew what happened to the line of Durin and she was there for a reason.

A soft whimper left her lips as she went in deeper. She never thought that she would feel such pain. Yes, she felt the pain of broken bones and sprained ankles and cuts that healed fairly well.

Much later she slowly opened her eyes letting out a soft groan as she slowly got up in the bed. She winced as she sat up. Her hand shot down to her leg where she had been shot at. She moved the blanket and looked at the wound. Her brows furrowed together as she noticed that it was healed, but the wound would always be there. She swallowed the lump in her throat.

She slowly got up to her feet rather shakily as her door opened. Her eyes widened as she saw an elleth enter the room.

"My lady, I'm here to help you get ready." She said bowing her head slightly,

"Oh, but you don't have to…"

The elleth moved forward to help Artemis. "You are still hurting my lady. I'm here to make sure you don't injure yourself further."

Artemis took a soft breath knowing that was fairly true. She would have a hard time walking due to being shot in the leg.

The dwarves sat at the tables in the Elven court, eating. However, they weren't very happy with just having vegetables.

"Try it. Just a mouthful." Dori said trying his best to get his youngest brother to eat some greens.

"I don't like green food," Ori said, wrinkling his nose.

Dwalin looked through his bowl of greens. "Where's the meat?"

Oin held up a vegetable with his knife looking at it in disgust.

"Have they got any chips?" Ori questioned rather hopeful,

An elf maiden played the harp softly.

Lord Elrond and Gandalf walked through the halls of Rivendell,

"Kind of you to invite us. I'm not really dressed for dinner." Gandalf mused with a small smile.

"Well, you never are."

They both laughed and they arrived at the courtyard where the dwarves were eating.

"How is our lady companion?" Gandalf asked softly, rather concerned for the only female in their group.

"She was lucky that the poison from the arrow did not spread."

Gandalf took a breath of relief.

"But my old friend, I could sense she was different."

Gandalf took a sharp breath knowing that he would be able to tell that Artemis was indeed different,

Everyone suddenly went silent when they noticed Artemis coming into the room wearing an elven gown.

Artemis limped, holding her head high trying to keep herself on her feet and not to fall over. She bit her lip softly seeing that Lord Elrond gestured her to join him, Gandalf, and Thorin. She made her way up the stairs shyly worrying her lower lip between her teeth. She was afraid of what Thorin would say to her since she was reckless in saving his family.

Lord Elrond looked at the swords that Thorin and Gandalf had. He looked at Thorin's sword. "This is Orcrist, the Goblin Cleaver. A famous blade, forged by the High Elves of the West, my kin. May it serve you well." He said handing the Orcist to Thorin, who accepted it with a nod of his head. He then looked at Gandalf's sword. "And this is Glamdring, the Foe-hammer, sword of the King of Gondolin. These swords were made for the goblin wars of the First Age..."

Artemis bit her lip softly as she looked down at her food.

Gandalf looked at the young woman.

"How did you come by these?" Lord Elrond asked, looking over at Gandalf.

Gandalf turned his attention to Lord Elrond, "We found them in a troll hoard on the Great East Road, shortly before we were ambushed by orcs."

"And what were you doing on the Great East Road?"

No one replied to Lord Elrobd's question.

Artemis shifted shyly looking down.

Thorin looked over at Gandalf rather perturbed,

"Lady Artemis wonderful to see you out and walking," Gandalf said with a smile.

Artemis looked up shyly and nodded her head. "Thank you, Lord Elrond, for saving my life."

Lord Elrond nodded his head,
