Ingrid flew in and stopped in front of Neville.
Neville untied his letter. He noticed that there was also one for Jane, which was fairly common. He opened his letter.
Dear Neville,
Go check on Jane. Her mother just had to write her a letter explaining that her grandfather died.
Love,
Gran
Neville quickly got up and went over to Jane, feeling as though horrible things just kept on happening.
Jane was just opening her letter. She stopped and looked at Neville. "Is something wrong?" she asked.
"Could you go out into the hall with me, to open that?"
Jane rocked back and forth a few times, clearly having figured out that something was very wrong, and then silently got up. She took Neville's hand and they walked out into the hall.
The morning of the following Saturday, Neville was leaving the great hall with Hermione and Luna. Jane wasn't with them because she had gone home for the funeral.
"Neville, Hermione," Professor Slughorn greeted, "I'll see you both at the Slug Club tonight, right?"
"Yeah," Neville said, nervously.
Hermione nodded.
"Great," Professor Slughorn said, walking off. He hadn't seemed to have noticed that Luna was even there.
"I don't want to go," Neville complained, "but Dumbledore told me to get on his good side."
"He asked me to do that too," Hermione said. "I wonder why."
