He saw a young woman, bent over by sorrow, chained in a cold, hard cell. A beam of moonlight shone through a barred window set high in the wall and fell on her face. A single tear rolled down her cheek, like a liquid diamond.
Eragon rose with a start and found himself crying uncontrollably. The dream had been so real, it felt like he was actually there. His sobs caused Daemon to roll over, already awake.
"Eragon, you okay?" The Dragonborn asked with concern. Eragon didn't reply, his body still shaking as he sobbed quietly. Daemon came over and sat beside his friend, putting an arm around his shoulders in comfort. He didn't know why Eragon was crying, perhaps he had a nightmare, but like any friend Daemon reassured him that he was there and that Eragon was not alone.
As if on cue, Saphira linked her mind with Eragon's as did Daemon and together they chased away the last of the darkness. Eragon felt Saphira's love, and Daemon's, his new little family.
Peace, little one, she whispered gently. We are with you, always.
He stood atop a mountain ridge, staring ahead into the distance as the cold breeze blowed against his scales. His gaze looked over the great valley before him, lost in thought as he continued to just stare ahead. A part of him felt lost and with good reason, the ones he cared about were not here to see this great view.
They were gone. He didn't know where they were, if they were safe, if... she was safe. For the first time in a long time, he was alone. He wanted to be with his friend-turned-brother who was always at his side, despite everything the world threw at them. He worried about their new ally/friend; the one that had come to them in their darkest hour and had helped them pull through until now.
But more importantly, he missed her. A few months ago, he would have never realized how much she'd come to mean to him, how important she was to him. What were they? Friends? Or... more than that? He wasn't sure now. Things have changed between them. She asked, no... pleaded with him not to go, but he had to. He was the only one who could get their precious cargo to it's destination in time. But even still... a big part of him wished to be back with her, at her side.
He cursed the gods for this, they always seemed to enjoy making his life hell. He pictured all of them in his mind, the four of them, together around the campfire once more. If it were only so...
Wherever you are, he whispered to the breeze, please be safe. Come back to me... The only answer he got was the lonely sound of the leaves as they danced in the wind, as it whisked away the moisture running down his cheeks, and carried it across the valley floor below.
Daemon's eyes snapped open and he found himself staring at the wall, a tear sliding down his cheek as his brows furrowed. Just what in Oblivion was that? That dream... it felt so real. His attention shifted when he heard quiet sobs and rolled over to see Eragon crying. Looks like it wasn't just him having a restless night.
She stared into the fire, feeling it's warm. Her partner was tucked at her side, safely sleeping. The mountains provided a sense of security from their pursers who were far behind them. So why was she depressed? Was it because he wasn't there? A sight escaped her as she curled her tail around her partner. Love him as she did, it just wasn't the same as sleeping next to...him.
It had all been confusing really, from how her feelings for him began to develop and grow. She still couldn't believe that she had grown such strong feelings for him. And it all started when he became like her, which helped them spend more time together. She had even come to see him as she did her partner-of-her-mind; she cared about him like he was a part of her. But...had she really come to see him that way? Her heart gave a painful ache, and soon the dots connected in her mind.
She was heartbroken.
They all knew he had to leave, he was the one who suggested it, the one who volunteered to leave the group as time was not on their side right now, not with their precious cargo in dire jeopardy. She told him she didn't want him to go, but still he left with a promise that they will all be together again.
Why did it hurt so much? Because he left without a glance back?
Because maybe... he didn't see her in the way she saw him?
She raised her head to the sky as the tears rolled down, the stars clear and bright. She wondered if he was looking at the same stars, wherever he was. I'm going to tell him, she vowed to herself. I swear Ancestors...if you bring him back to me...I'm going to tell him how I feel. She closed her eyes and hummed sadly, her silent prayer echoing in her head. A gentle wind whispered softly across the camp, almost as if answering her, and she felt a curious sensation as the oddly moist breeze brushed lightly against her scales...
Saphira's eyes fluttered open and she tried to hold back the tears forming behind them. She had experienced bad dreams before, but never like that. She didn't know she could feel that way...so empty, so vulnerable. What did it mean? She knew right away that she didn't like feeling that way. She was a dragon! She shouldn't feel so... so... vulnerable! She had to be strong for her Eragon, and for her friends Daemon and Brom. She calmed down enough to think about the strange dream. It was just a dream, wasn't it? It wasn't real. It didn't make sense, not a single part of it made sense. It was all so confusing! It irritated her that she couldn't make sense of it. To get her mind off her troubling thoughts, she reached out and felt for Eragon and Daemon's minds, instantly connecting with them and felt reassured that they were there, safe and secure.
But then she felt something else. She wasn't the only one having dark dreams. She reached out and tried to comfort them as they all had a restless night thanks to dreams that made no sense to either of them. However, Saphira's thoughts lingered on the dream she had.
The heartbroken person/dragon in her dreams couldn't have been her...could it?
And that's it for this chapter. Just felt like adding some drama into the mix.
