Elijah held Klaus for another moment and then pulled away.
"You still feel guilty, do you not? This shall eat away at you worse than before if you do not let it go," Elijah said carefully.
"Nay, Elijah, tis not true!" Klaus said adamantly.
"Remember when we stole the pies on market day when we were but children? I think twas a dare from that boy who used to keep birds," Elijah coaxed.
"Ah, Winfred the Stout? Yes, we were foolish to fall into his misbegotten plan," Klaus recalled. "But I have no notion why you bring this up now."
"What did Mother say?" Elijah went on to ask.
"We did not get whipped because we stole the pies, but only because we lied," Klaus recounted. "Oh Elijah, really?"
"Aye, really. Now, I want you to go speak to Kol. He should not have hurt Marcel, yet he did end up saving the girl. I will leave it to you to decide the consequences for him," Elijah said. "I am going to see Freya and then cut a switch for your lying backside. We shall take care of it here in Finn's room. No one will hear from down here."
"Blast it," Klaus hissed. "But I suppose I owe to you to do as you asked. You know your forgiveness means...everything to me."
Elijah said, "I know." He kissed Klaus on the head and patted him.
"Now, go. Kol has school on the morrow," Elijah said. "Speak to him and then make haste back here."
"Very well," Klaus sighed. "You are not going to tell Freya, are you?"
"About your punishment? Yes, I feel like she has the right to know," Elijah said. "Remember, no more secrets. They breed division and we cannot have that in our family."
Klaus nodded and make his way up to the boys' bedroom.
Older Boys' Room
Klaus found Marcel and Kol already ready for bed when he came up.
"Ah, I see you two have not torn apart the room. That tis a start," Klaus said smiling.
Marcel smirked, "Kol did apologize and says he shall make it up to me. I just have to think of how."
Klaus sat near Marcel, "You are alright, my son?"
"Yes, Papa. I am fine," Marcel said. "Shall I leave you to talk privately? I would like to see Rebekah again before bed."
"Of course, thank you," Klaus replied, eyeing his brother. Kol looked nervous, but was trying not to. Typical Kol.
Marcel left.
"Where is Damon? I thought he would be sleeping by now," Klaus asked, looking at the empty bed.
"The boys begged him to them them a story. I think he is trying to spend more time with Stefan. I believe Miss Elena may be in there, too, with her brother," Kol said. "Nik, I am sorry. I should have waited for you."
Klaus waved him off. "Tis not that. I need to speak with you about something. The others know, well, not Rebekah yet. I will tell her on the morrow."
"What tis it? I assumed you were going to whip me raw tonight," Kol asked in confusion.
"You ought to have some punishment, but let us delay that conversation," Klaus said. "This is able what I was hiding."
"Aye, the caves," Kol said. "I get it."
"No, Kol," Klaus said. "There is a bit more. I-I have been remiss and a coward. I do not even know where to start..."
Kol eyed Klaus with interest. "Nik, just say it. Are we leaving? Do not leave me in agony. Speak!"
Klaus gulped, "It was not Mikael who killed Mother that day...It was me!"
Kol blinked and sat up. "You did? What happened? We all just assumed Father did it in his rage at finding out you were Ansel's son..."
"After Father killed all the wolves, I found my true father's head on a spike. I went home hoping to confront him. He was gone but she was there. I tore out her heart, apparently. I have no memory of the act. I should have been honest and fought him then and there, but I could not admit what I had done."
"Oh Nik, you have carried this burden for so long. We would never have left you to Father's rage," Kol said. "You know that, correct?"
"I did not believe I was worthy of all of your love and affection. I am sorry for not trusting you more," Klaus said sadly. "And for killing her..."
"How did Finn take it? They were so close. I used to be jealous at times," Kol admitted.
"He seemed to have known the truth," Klaus said. "I am realizing that since all of you trusted me. I need to extend that trust to others, even if tis not easy."
"Bekah and Marcel?" Kol prompted. "Nik, they love each other. They should not have to sneak off into a filthy wine cellar. Do you not see that?"
Klaus took a breath and walked over, nearer to Kol.
"I am starting to," Klaus said wearily. "I will speak to them. Tis long overdue. Thank you for your good counsel, Kol. We should do this more often."
"Aye, where do you want me?" Kol said, starting to get up.
"No, stay in bed," Klaus said. "You usually get spanked for your refusal to make amends. You have already done that and I am very proud of you. I think that writing, 'I shall not snap the neck of any family members' one hundred times should do. But not tonight, tomorrow after your schooling."
Kol smirked, "I think I should rather have a hiding. One hundred?"
"I can make it two and add an hour in the corner?" Klaus retorted, brushing back Kol's brown locks from his forehead.
Kol laughed, "Tis one hundred then. Good night, Brother."
Klaus leaned over and surprised Kol by kissing his forehead, as Elijah had just done to him.
"I love you, Kol. Always and forever," Klaus said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Kol replied, "And I, too. Night."
Klaus made his way back downstairs wondering what he should say to Rebekah and Marcel tomorrow.
Freya's Attic
"How tis the girl? Did she have any injuries?" Elijah asked, as he approached Freya.
"Her face was bruised. I also found some contusions on her arms and thigh. I would like to do the same to that wrench who hurt her! But I think we found our sacrifice. How many others have suffered because of that evil woman's business? Rebekah gave her some blood and compelled her to forget what happened," Freya started. "It tis worrying, though. Hank worried much over her father. She wanted to go off and find him in Richmond. I told her we would look into it."
"Good. I did not ask about him. I shall do that later. But for right now, I wish to discuss Niklaus. He is torn up with guilt over Mother's death and never telling us. I know how his mind works, Freya, I need to punish him," Elijah said plainly.
"Punish him? He tis not a child, Brother. Is that necessary?" Freya said, looking up from the spell she was working on. She had the daggers in front of her and an array of dark objects.
"I know he is not a child, but you must understand what Mikael did to Niklaus. He was never kind to any of us, but to Niklaus, he sought out ways to humiliate him. He nagged at him about being weak and kindhearted and beat that out of him at every chance," Elijah said. "I wish I would have done more. Stopped him. Niklaus feels like he is deserving of retribution. If I do not whip him soundly, he will find ways to punish himself worse than I could," Elijah admitted.
Freya sat back on her stool and stared, whispering, "This pains me more than anything, what you all suffered. But would a simple thrashing even get through to him."
"No," Elijah said simply. "I was wondering if you had a spell that would still or reduce his healing somewhat?"
"I should not like to do any spell in case our aunt come now," Freya said. "But Ilayda mentioned an herbal remedy that may help. I think I have some vervain here..."
"That may work," Elijah said. "It need not last that long, but I want him to feel the ills of his actions. He did not trust us to stand beside him. At times I think we all hated Mother for never protecting us or for what she made us later," Elijah said. "Though that was also tinged with love, the love we bore for her as children."
Freya ground up the herbs and combined them with some oil and beeswax. Elijah watched as she used a candle to melt the concoction. He cringed seeing the purple flowers of vervain and wolfsbane.
"You need not explain to me," Freya said after a moment. "I added some wolfsbane to make your lesson stick, along with the vervain. Be careful, though, it will probably burn you also."
Freya stirred the mixture with a flat stick and found some cotton gloves coated with wax to be water proofed.
"Thank you, Sister," Elijah said. "I do not know how we ever got on without you."
Freya smiled and handed everything to Elijah.
"From what Kol tells me," Freya laughed. "There was a good deal of strife."
"Aye, that is not a lie," Elijah said. "Will those daggers do for your spell?"
"I believe so," Freya said. "I shall wait until I am better rested to attempt something so strong. I may need to link with Ilayda to combine our power. I fear that Solomon and Damon may not be ready...but we may need their access to magic to accomplish this."
"I cannot say I understand," Elijah said. "Get some rest."
"You, too," Freya said. "After you put Niklaus' heart at ease."
"I am not sure I can accomplish that alone either," Elijah confessed. "He will need all of our support."
"He has it," Freya said. She embraced Elijah and bade him goodnight.
Finn and Sage's Quarters
Klaus was waiting for Elijah in the kitchen. He was stripping the switch with his pocket knife as he waited.
"Ah, you cut your own switch," Elijah noted.
"I know you always had the lads do it themselves so they could think of what they had coming," Klaus replied. "And I did not feed tonight. Nor did I thrash Kol. He and Marcel made up. I gave him a hundred lines for tomorrow."
Elijah nodded. He was not surprised that Klaus denied himself blood, he was surprised that Klaus had not put Kol over his knee for hurting Marcel. But Kol always detested writing lines more than anything.
"What tis that?" Klaus asked, throwing the shavings in the stove and looking at the bundle Elijah held.
"You shall find out," Elijah said, directing his brother into Finn's room.
Klaus laid the switch on the bed and ran his hands through his suspenders. Elijah lit another lantern and put the items on Sage's dressing table.
"Do you think they will be home tonight?" Klaus asked, glancing at the door.
"Nay, I think they will spend the night at the saloon. They could probably use the privacy," Elijah said. "Go on and remove your trousers."
Klaus sighed softly and undid his britches. He stood in his stockings and drawers.
"Those, too," Elijah said gently. "Freya made a salve that will make you feel this whipping keenly."
Klaus grimaced, "I know I deserve this. And much more."
"You may," Elijah said, "But you also deserved love and to feel safe. I am not condoning what you did, but I understand. None of us were in our right minds for years after we were turned. Tonight, you will let it go."
Klaus slipped off his drawers and stockings and stretched himself across the bed as Elijah indicated, just as if he were going to bed. If only he could just shut his eyes and go to sleep and end this night.
Elijah handed him a pillow, jesting, "Here, tis Finn's. He shall never know."
Elijah slipped on the glove and began to smooth the thick salve over Klaus' pale backside and thighs. He heard Klaus suck in his breath.
"Hell, that burns after first feeling cool," Klaus grumbled. "Witches and their myriad talents."
"Be glad tis not a spell," Elijah laughed. "Freya said the effects would not last too long."
"We shall see," Klaus groaned as Elijah finished up. "Can you get on with it already?"
Klaus was startled by a sharp slap to his rump.
Whack!
Klaus tried to turn back to look and Elijah walloped him again.
Whack!
"Ah," Klaus groaned, shifting his backside slightly.
"Tis a cotton glove to protect my hand from the burning," Elijah stated, smacking his behind harder. "I am sure you haven't felt a swat that keenly in a long time."
Whack!
"You know what this means," Klaus said, trying to stay still. "Freya can cook up a batch of this for you if you vex her!"
"I do not think I need be worried about that," Elijah answered primly. "Now, lay still. If you fight me, I will follow up with a strapping."
"Elijah! You would not," Klaus whined, earning another solid slap.
Whack!
"Indeed I would and maybe I ought to put you over my knee. Now, behave and tell me why you are getting the switch on your bared behind on this night," Elijah said, picking up the slender stick. Klaus had smoothed it of its bark and removed all thorns and nodes.
Thwap!
Elijah laid down a strip on the fullest part of Klaus' bottom. It left a red welt. Elijah held on to Klaus' lower back with his left hand.
"Ahhhh, I-I lied to you all," Klaus said, breathing heavily.
Thwap!
"Yes, and what else?" Elijah prodded, lifting the switch up higher.
Thwap!
"I killed our mother!" Klaus shrieked, almost trying to lift himself off the bed. Elijah held him down firmly as he brought the switch down firmly.
Thwap!
"No, that tis not why I am punishing you," Elijah explained. "Try again."
Thwap!
"Owwwwww," Klaus growled. "It b-bloody smarts!"
Thwap!
"I am going to add a lick with the strap every time you fail to answer properly," Elijah threatened. He had lost his belt when they used it to tie up Mrs. Smith, but he was sure Finn had a few in his wardrobe.
Thwap!
"I d-did n-not trust any of you," Klaus yelped. His bottom was now covered with several neat weals. Elijah swatted his crease area next.
Thwap!
"Yes, we love you, Niklaus," Elijah said firmly. "We always have."
Thwap!
Klaus bit into his fist and clutched at the pillow on the bed.
Thwap!
Tears finally escaped from his eyes as he thought of how he did not deserve the love of these people.
Thwap!
Their forgiveness and loyalty moved him as much as the lashes from the switch stung his backside and upper thighs.
Thwap!
Elijah started to work the thin branch up his behind, crossing some previous welts. He held Klaus' back firmly as he tried to twist over to avoid the whipping.
Thwap! Thwap!
Thwap! Thwap!
Thwap! Thwap!
Thwap! Thwap!
Thwap! Thwap!
Klaus sobbed and almost gave up fighting, but Elijah was not done.
"How do we feel about you, Niklaus?" Elijah asked.
Thwap!
"Ohhhhhh, it h-hurts. S-Stop this f-farce, Brother," Klaus begged.
Thwap! Thwap!
Elijah was afraid he would draw blood if he continued with the stick. He snapped it in half and walked over to the fireplace and tossed it in. Digging through Finn's clothes, he found his thickest belt and snapped it.
Klaus had turned to his side and almost tried to rub out the sting.
"Stop, you will burn your hands," Elijah chided. "Over on your stomach, we are not finished here."
Klaus sobbed, "No, no, not the strap!"
Elijah pulled Klaus back into place and using the belt doubled cracked his brother's stripped backside.
Whap!
"Owwwwww," Klaus howled.
Whap!
Elijah winced himself to see the red marks from the strap over the switch lines, but he knew he had to continue.
"Y-You l-love me!" Klaus yelled out. "But you s-should not."
Whap!
Whap!
Whap!
"We do love you," Elijah said. "Do you deserve love?"
Whap!
Whap!
Whap!
As Elijah laid down the belt harder, Klaus broke into labored cries.
He finally moaned, "Yeeessss, I deserve l-love!"
Whap! Whap! Whap!
"Say it like you mean it or I shall paddle your gleaming red bottom with Sage's wooden hairbrush!" Elijah warned.
Whap! He strapped Klaus' upper thighs as he held his hybrid brother firmly in place.
Klaus sobbed louder. "Owwwwwww! My arse!"
"That tis it," Elijah snapped. He tossed down the belt and fetched the sturdy oval brush from the dressing table.
Klaus had turned again and wailed, "Noooooo!"
Elijah sat on the bed and grabbed Klaus and placed him over both of his knees. He leaned his arm over Klaus' back to block any attempts for Klaus to protect his scorched seat.
Pop!
Pop!
Pop!
Pop!
He paddled Klaus' fiery red cheeks from side to side as the younger Original kicked and squirmed. Each pop left an oval mark, Klaus' bottom was swollen and shiny from the salve and the spankings.
"Are you worthy of our love?" Elijah prompted again.
Pop!
Pop!
"YESSSS! I a-am w-worthy," Klaus shouted. "Ahhhh, I bloody s-said it. Please, 'lijah!"
"Yes, you are worthy," Elijah said. "Now let go of the guilt. Tomorrow is a new day."
Pop!
Pop!
Pop!
Pop!
Elijah popped Klaus' sit spots hard and tossed the brush on the bed. He was winded also. He used his gloved hand to pat Klaus' searing seat gently.
"We are done," Elijah said slowly. "Do you feel better?"
Klaus laughed wryly through his tears.
"S-Somewhat," Klaus sniffed. "Oh, my arse is on fire!"
Elijah lightly smacked him causing Klaus to gulp, "OHHH!"
"Language!" Elijah smiled. "I am going to let you up. Perhaps you need to sleep here tonight?"
"I-I cannot m-move," Klaus sniffled. "I am s-sorry, but I f-feel your love. All of you, somehow."
Elijah rubbed Klaus' bottom a moment more and then set him on his feet.
"Do not touch that rump!" Elijah warned. He pulled back the covers and unbuttoned Klaus' dress shirt as the other vampire shifted from foot to foot and cried. "Get in the bed, Niklaus."
Elijah threw Finn's soiled pillow on the floor and found a clean one. He situated Klaus on his belly and poured some water from the washstand onto a clean rag. Elijah wiped Klaus' face and then covered him up with the bed sheet only. He did not think he wished to have a heavy quilt on top of that sore bottom.
Elijah blew out the lantern and stopped to fix the blankets after putting up the brush and belt.
"Elijah, do not l-leave me," Klaus whispered.
"I never would," Elijah said. He got in the other side of the bed after slipping off his boots and laying on top of the quilt. He patted Klaus' back and found himself singing a song in their old tongue. It was one that Esther had sung to them. As Klaus' snores sounded, Elijah stopped and found himself shedding some tears.
Unlike Finn, he had never suspected Niklaus had slaughtered their mother. She had tried to protect their lives with the immortality spell. He knew no one was more horrified than her of how they had turned out.
Elijah now wondered if Esther had not been killed by Klaus if she would not have killed them first. Then, he finally fell into a deep sleep, right next to his brother.
