Paramedics rush in, taking Lazarus' body out. The Time Lord, and Sophie exit the building. Martha rushes up, pulling the Doctor in for a hug. "Are you alright?"
"Course I am, I'm always alright."
Jack comes jogging up the stairs, his bow tie untied, the top button of his shirt is unbuttoned, his jacket abandoned somewhere, with his sleeves rolled up. He grins upon seeing the Gallifreyan, hugging him. He then moves over, scooping Sophie up, spinning her around.
The Doctor unties his tie, unbuttoning his top button as well. Francine Jones comes marching over, and the Doctor smiles jovially at her, "Ah, Mrs Jones. We still haven't finished our chat."
The woman slaps him, hard, right across the face. He reels back, his hand rising to his cheek. Martha glares at her mother, "Mum, what are you doing?"
"Always the mothers, every time," the Time Lord grimaces.
"He is dangerous. I've been told things."
Jack rolls his eyes, "I told you he will keep your daughter safe. You hit him again, and I will be forced to arrest you on charges of assault against a government element."
"Look around you. Nothing but death and destruction."
"This isn't his fault!" Martha argues, "He saved us, all of us!"
"And it was Tish who invited everyone to this thing in the first place," Leo adds, "I'd say technically, it's her fault."
Tish elbows Leo in the ribs, rolling her eyes. Behind them, a large crash is heard. The Doctor whips around, rushing for the crash. Sophie doesn't hesitate to follow him, Jack right beside her.
They skid to a halt by the ambulance, the doors on the back wide open. Martha and Tish join them a few moments later. There are two corpses in the back of the ambulance, neither one that of Lazarus. The Time Lord sighs, "Lazarus, back from the dead. Should have known, really."
Jack reaches into his pocket, handing the Doctor his sonic. The Time Lord scans around the room, trying to find Lazarus' DNA trace.
"Where is he?" the Captain asks.
The sonic starts beeping more furiously, and the Time Lord nods at the building in front of them, "That way. The church."
"Cathedral," Tish states, "It's Southwark Cathedral. He told me."
The Doctor shrugs, nodding. He runs for the church, the rest of the group following him. As they step through the door, Martha surveys the room, "Do you think he's in here?"
"Where would you go if you were looking for sanctuary?" the Doctor asks her.
The group cautiously approach the altar. Lazarus shivers in front of it, shrouded in a red blanket. The professor hears them approach, turning to look at them. "I came here before, a lifetime ago. I thought I was going to die then. In fact, I was sure of it. I sat here, just a child, the sound of planes and bombs outside."
The Doctor walks around in front of him, "The Blitz."
"You've read about it."
Jack walks over to join the Time Lord, "We were there."
"You're too young.
"So are you," the Doctor reminds him.
Lazarus starts to laugh, but his body begins to make loud, rather painful sounding, cracking noises. "In the morning, the fires had died, and I was still alive. I swore I'd never face death like that again. So defenceless. I would arm myself, fight back, defeat it."
"That's what you were trying to do today?" the Doctor asks, kindly.
"That's what I did today."
"And the people who died?" Jack asks, crossing his arms.
"They were nothing. I changed the course of history."
"Any of them might have done too," the Doctor reminds the professor, "You think history's only made with equations? Facing death is part of being human. You can't change that."
"No, Doctor. Avoiding death, that's being human. It's our strongest impulse, to cling to life with every fibre of being. I'm only doing what everyone before me has tried to do. I've simply been more successful."
"Look at yourself. You're mutating! You've no control over it. You call that a success?"
Lazarus looks up, meeting the Gallifreyans eyes, "I call it progress. I'm more now than I was. More than just an ordinary human."
"There's no such thing as an ordinary human."
The professor convulses again, and the Doctor moves around to stand between Sophie and Martha. "He's going to change again any minute," Martha whispers.
"I know. If I can get him up into the bell tower somehow, I've an idea that might work."
Sophie points up, "Up there?"
Lazarus lifts his eyes, twisting to look at the Time Lord, "You're so sentimental, Doctor. Maybe you are older than you look."
"I'm old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one. In the end, you just get tired. Tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything turn to dust. If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you'll end up alone."
"That's a price worth paying."
"Is it?" Jack asks.
"I will feed soon," the Professor declares, a deranged smile spreading across his face.
"I'm not going to let that happen."
"You've not been able to stop me so far."
"Oh, ignore them, Lazarus," Sophie says, walking around into view of the man. "They're old, and bitter. I thought you had a taste for fresher meat."
"Sophie, no," the Doctor protests.
But it's too late. Lazarus has Sophie in his sights, and lunges at her. She takes off running for the stairs. Jack tries to follow her, but the Doctor grabs his arm, shaking his head.
"Someone needs to go after her!" he argues.
"She'll be fine, Jack. You can't get near him. He feeds on you, and it's over for all of us."
The captain sighs, "You're right." He turns around, "Martha, Tish, I need you to go back to Lazarus' building."
"Hold on," Martha protests, "You're not sending me away."
"You're right. I need you to go and get UNIT. Tell them Captain Jack Harkness needs their help."
"And if that doesn't work?" Tish protests.
"Then tell them the Doctor needs them. Ask for Brigadier Bamberra, alright."
"Got it. Bamberra, Harkness, Doctor."
He nods, "Go."
The Doctor makes a dash to the transept, looking up into the rafter, "Sophie? Where are you?"
She skids to a halt at a passageway in the clerestory, gazing down at the Time Lord. "What? I'm a bit busy being chased by a monster!"
"Take him to the top. The very top of the bell tower, do you hear me!"
"To the top, got it!" she takes off running again.
The Doctor runs to the organ loft, Jack following him as close as possible. "What's the plan, Doctor?"
He extracts his sonic from his pocket, shoving it into the power socket on the organ. "Hypersonic sound waves. Inspired."
Jack smiles, nodding, "Smart plan."
*Bell Tower*
Lazarus chases the woman into the bell tower. She looks around, just having an old wooden platform to run in a circle on. "Whatever your plan is, Doc, you better do it fast," she mutters. The creature comes bursting into the tower. Sophie stands on the other side of the platform from the creature. Lazarus attempts to jump across the gap that is under the bell, knowing that if her runs around the platform, Sophie will do the same. He doesn't quite make it, only crushing the wooden barrier that would block anyone from falling off.
*Organ Loft*
"I hope it's a good acoustic in here," the Doctor says, pulling some knobs out on the organ. He presses his trainer clad feet down on both of the pedals, and starts to play.
"It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to work," Jack reminds him, whilst gazing up into the tower.
*Bell Tower*
The mutated Lazarus lashes his tail across the gap. It hits Sophie's legs, knocking her off the platform. She clings onto the edge of the walkway, hoping that the Doctor starts to speed up his plan.
*Organ Loft*
The Time Lord glances up, realising that the music isn't doing much. He looks over at Jack, "We need to turn this up to eleven." He pulls his screwdriver out of the socket, changing its setting. Jack twists the volume dial all the way around, and the Gallifreyan resumes his playing.
*Bell Tower*
Sophie clings onto the ledge, and hears music drift up from beneath them. It gets louder, so loud that Sophie can't hear her own thoughts. More than anything she wants to plug her ears. Lazarus seems to be in immense pain, and falls off of the platform, crashing down onto the floor below. The music stops, and Sophie assumes that the Time Lord went to go and inspect the body.
"Sophie!" Jack shouts, looking up into the belltower. She's pushing herself back up onto the platform.
"Sophie!" the Doctor yells, just as she gets her legs back up onto the platform.
"What! I was a little hung up at the moment. I'm coming!"
She stands up, moving back over to the steps. She doesn't bother running, knowing that the threat is over.
