A/N: Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay in this chapter! Enjoy!
The weekend went by without much else happening much to everyone's relief. Aliya and the two agents had spent the time holed up in Leon's apartment while various agents got a new safe house ready for them, which they would move in to while Aliya was at school. Aliya had ignored all of Trevor's texts and phone calls, wanting answers that she could not tell him without also putting him at risk. She dreaded going to school because she knew she'd have to tell him something.
Aliya was at her locker grabbing her books just before first period, finally closing it and jumping when she saw Trevor standing there, hoping that she could have just avoided him.
"What happened on Friday night? Who was that person trying to kill us? Where did you learn how to use a gun?" He starts rattling off, not giving her a chance to say anything first. Aliya sighed and grabbed her friend by his wrist and pulled him into the nearby janitor's closet, using the cleaning cart to barricade the door.
"First of all," Aliya starts, reaching into her backpack and pulling his sneakers out, tossing them in his direction, "because you left your sneakers, I'm in the doghouse."
"Oh, uh thanks. What is going on though?"
Aliya sighed, "well me and my parents had to move over the weekend. We'd been staying at a hotel since Friday."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Well, me and my parents...we're in something like witness protection." She explains. It wasn't technically a lie, just not the full truth.
Trevor scoffed, "fine don't tell me."
Aliya punched him in the shoulder, "I'm being serious, ass. Why else would someone have been trying to kill us? And why else would my parents have guns aside from being cops?"
"Okay fine Jesus, I believe you. And you're moving? Are you staying at this school? What did you all witness that you had to be in witness protection?"
Aliya shrugged, "I don't know. My parents witnessed it, not me. And yes, I'll still be at this school, we just won't be neighbors anymore."
Trevor nodded as the final bell rang, "come on, we should get to class."
Aliya nodded as they left the closet. Trevor was still skeptical about the whole thing, but she had no reason to be lying to him. He considered her an open book about most things in her life since she had moved there.
Aliya took her phone out as she got a text from Leon, covering her ears before she could even read it as she heard the feedback from the speaker, her heart starting to beat a mile a minute.
"Move it, freak!" Someone said, shoving her out of the way as he and some of his friends walked by to make it to class.
Aliya fell to the floor, dropping her phone, making it slide across the floor. Trevor rushed to her side and helped her up and she went to grab her phone, only for Logan to beat her to it.
"Give me my phone back." She says, holding out her hand, only for him to hold it out of her reach.
"Why? So, you can text mommy and daddy how much you love them?"
"Logan, give it back to her. She needs it." Trevor says urgently, coming to stand beside his friend.
"If she wants it then she has to come grab it." He says, only to hold the phone further out of her reach as she attempted to grab it from him. Aliya felt her blood boiling, wincing as she heard more feedback from the speaker, her heart pounding as she tried to focus. Logan's laugh echoed in her head, making her angrier.
Aliya looked up at the boy again, locking her eyes with his.
"Aww what is it? Getting_" Logan starts, unable to finish his sentence when Aliya's fist connected with his face.
Trevor looked on, his eyes wide as Logan slid across the tile floor, groaning, and holding his nose as he came to a stop. His hand became covered in blood as he held his nose. Aliya didn't notice Trevor's wide eyes as she grabbed her phone, a crowd beginning to form.
"Who are you?" He muttered to himself as Principal Atkins pushed her way through the crowd.
"Someone explain! What happened!?" She bellowed around the crowd of students.
"She hit me!" Logan says, pointing at Aliya as another student helped him up.
"My office. Now." The older woman says, looking at Aliya, "and Logan, I also want to see you once the nurse gets you cleaned up!" She adds, grabbing Aliya by the arm roughly and dragging her towards her office.
Principle Atkins brought Aliya to her office and forced her to sit down in one of the chairs across from her desk.
"You wait here. I'm going to call your mother."
Yeah, like Helena will care once she gets the whole story. The girl thought as the principle left and took her phone out, taking the time to send a lengthy text to Helena about what happened. Lucky for her, the two agents were aware of the issues she was having with Logan since she started at this school almost a month earlier.
Helena had received the phone call from the school within minutes of receiving the message from Aliya and immediately got in her car to head to the school. She didn't know what to think about the situation as she pulled up to the school. On one hand, she was livid that Aliya almost blew their cover, but on the other, she couldn't be mad that Aliya stood up for herself.
The secretary led her to Principal Atkins office where she saw Aliya sitting in one chair and Logan and an older man that she could only assume was his father, sitting on the other side. Logan held an ice pack to his face while his dad was yelling at the principle.
"This girl is a menace! I want her expelled! Arrested even!"
Principle Atkins let out a heavy sigh and looked over as Helena entered.
"Ah, Mrs. Johnson, so nice of you to join us."
Helena nodded and went to stand behind Aliya's seat, making the girl tense up. Aliya was afraid to look at Helena, afraid of what her facial expressions might be saying.
"So, what happened?"
"Well, the short version is that Aliya here attacked Logan." The principle explains, sitting back in her seat and folding her hands over her stomach.
"I didn't attack anyone! That's_" Aliya starts, stopping when Helena held up her hand to silence her.
"What kind of child are you raising? She almost knocked my boy out and now she's trying to lie about it!" Logan's father, Mr. Andrews, says, turning his anger towards Helena.
"I raise my child to do what's right and regardless of what happened, I'd like to get to the bottom of this but how I parent my child is none of your concern." Helena says coolly, surprising everyone by how calm she appeared to be. Helena put a hand on Aliya's shoulder, making her flinch.
"Well, as you know, Mrs. Johnson, we have a strict zero tolerance policy here. I'm going to have to suspend Aliya for the rest of the week."
"What? But that's_"
Helena gave Aliya a look, immediately making her be quiet.
"So, you're telling me that you're suspending my daughter for standing up against someone who's been assaulting her since she started here?" Helena asks, all too familiar with the constant pushing, shoving, and hair pulling that Aliya had been subjected to the past month.
"My son hasn't assaulted anyone! How_" Mr. Andrews starts, only for Principal Atkins to silence him with a look.
"Mrs. Johnson, listen_"
"No. You listen. This boy has been harassing my daughter since day one and it's slowly been escalating. She's come home with bruises and has been too anxious to go to school," Helena starts, exaggerating the last part, "I'm honestly curious to see what the super intendant would make of this." She adds, crossing her arms, Aliya able to sense the anger in her tone.
Aliya watched as the principle stumbled over her words, trying to find the right thing to say.
"You know, perhaps we can let this go. I'm willing to decrease her punishment to three days of after school detention because we still do not tolerate fighting, regardless of the reason, and Logan will have detention too."
"What!?" Logan and his father said incredulously at the sudden turn of events.
Principle Atkins ignored them, "take Aliya home and enjoy the rest of your day."
Helena nodded and grabbed Aliya by the arm, gentler than Atkins had, and lead her out of the school. Aliya said nothing as she followed her pretend mother to the car and got in the passenger seat, looking down at her lap.
"Are you mad?"
Helena sighed, "am I mad that you almost blew our cover? Yes, I'm livid about that. Am I mad that you stood your ground against a bully? No. I'm kind of proud."
Aliya laughed, "well you also did good in the office talking me out of it."
Helena chuckled as she started driving, "I was honestly doubtful that the assault argument would even work."
"So, am I in trouble?"
"If people ask, you're grounded, but no you're not."
"What do you think Leon will say?"
Helena shrugged, "probably feel the same way that I'm feeling about it."
Aliya nodded, "so what's going on with you two? Are you like, together, after your little date on Friday night?"
Helena rolled her eyes, "this again? It wasn't a date and there's nothing between us."
"Oh, come on! You guys literally slept together and you're telling me there's nothing?"
"How do you…?"
"How do I know? You guys weren't exactly quiet about it and despite growing up in a lab, I know what sex is."
"Look, it's more complicated. I want to work on my career more and Leon is ready to settle down. It wouldn't work."
Aliya raised an eyebrow, "who says it wouldn't work? Dating doesn't mean that you also jump into marriage and kids right away. You can have fun with it and if it leads to marriage and kids in a few years, then awesome. If not, then you tried."
Helena looked at her, "when did you become so wise?"
Helena chuckled and thought for a moment. She knew that the kid had a point. She knew that there was no harm in dating just to see if things would work out, but there was also the issue of Ada to deal with. Part of her wondered if Leon was still seeing her or even still had feelings for the other woman and she didn't want to deal with that doubt.
Helena pulled up to their new safe house. She had been getting settled in when the school had called her, but she immediately knew that something wasn't right.
"Stay here." She says, getting out of the car and going up to the front door. The front door was slightly opened when she could have sworn that she had closed it and locked it before leaving. Helena took her gun out, entering the kitchen first and seeing a syringe on the counter with a pink tinged liquid in it with a note attached.
You might need this.
