Chapter 10
March 23rd
A few days later.
"I'm going to miss you, Pidgeot," Lucas cried, petting the large bird Pokemon.
"Hey, what about me?" Tobias asked angrily.
"Meh, I suppose," Lucas shrugged dismissively.
Grandad was leaving after staying a week. There was too much responsibility on the man's shoulders to take any more time off. Lucas enjoyed his time with his grandad, even though the man could be vicious with his tongue.
"Have you got everything?" Sophia asked.
"Yes, I think so," Tobias said.
"Hey, where's the presents," Abigail protested.
"Abigail!" Her parents scolded her, looking embarrassed.
Abigail ducked her head, but the smile on her face was unrepentant.
"Little brat knows her worth," Tobias chuckled, reaching into his pocket and producing a gift card from a local art supplies store. The amount of credit on the front was a lot.
"Wow," Abigail took the card in her hands.
"What do you say, Abigail?" Sophia asked.
"Thank you, grandad," Abigail said, hugging the man.
"Don't just thank me, your brother chipped in as well."
Lucas got the same treatment, and she returned to staring at the card, no doubt imagining what she could buy with such a sum. The girl was artistic and skilled for her age. He wouldn't be surprised if she pursued a career in art when she was older.
"It's too much," David argued.
"Nonsense," Tobias shook his head. "I haven't seen my grandkids in ages. I'm allowed to spoil them."
Lucas got a gift card from a local store selling supplies for crafting incense.
"I hear you are interested in making incense. This gift card will get you started."
"Thanks, grandad. This is perfect." He could grind the skill a lot with the number of ingredients he could purchase.
"Did you discover some information from the guy Vincent captured?" David asked, unaware of his son's role in the arrest.
Lucas perked up, listening intently.
"Some new information that may be useful," Tobias said. "I have a special team pursuing leads. Team Saber may go in hiding for a while, but Lucas should still be cautious."
His parents looked relieved. Lucas wasn't so sure, considering the explosive nature of the research they were performing.
"All right, it's time to get out of here," Tobias climbed onto Pidgeot and waved goodbye. They stood back as Pidgeot used its powerful wings to rise in the air before flying away.
"Well, it looks like a shopping trip is in order," Sophia said.
Later that day, Lucas was in his room after another workout. Dante was conked out on the bed, asleep. A massive pile of ingredients was in the corner of his room, including a brand-new mortar and pestle. The shopping trip had been a lot of fun, despite Abigail taking an age to spend her gift card at the store.
He received a new notification as well, which had some exciting changes.
The Perception Attribute has evolved!
Perception: How the player perceives the world. Increases all senses so he better interprets the information the player receives and reacts accordingly. Boosts the effectiveness of all skills that use the senses.
Sense Manipulation: Allows the player to be flexible with their five senses. Changes [Perception Modifier] into five different modifiers.
Distributed: 13/13
Sight: 4 | Smell: 2 | Hearing: 3 | Touch: 2 | Taste: 2
Why did the change in the {Perception Attribute} come now? Was this Arceus tinkering with the 'System' again? It seemed to be a positive change, and he could think of many ways to use it to his advantage. Lucas wondered if the change lowered his senses overall from before, but he felt nothing different. He checked his skills, and it seemed those affected by modifiers saw a small decrease, but only when the sense remained the same. For example, putting all his points into {Sight} would drastically improve the skills affected by that modifier.
Before grinding the {Immutable} skill, Lucas looked at his total {Aura} and considered spending his AP to increase the total amount. Since he was under time constraints, adding points to his {Aura} made sense. At its current level, he could only cast {Immutable} twelve times before he had to recharge, which took twenty minutes. It may be too much, depending on how long it took to increase the levels.
Lucas hesitated for a moment before he spent twenty of his AP to increase his {Aura} by one hundred points. With his passive bonuses, he now had two hundred-forty {Aura} and could cast the skill twenty-three times and have some left over.
Five hours later, he reached level three in {Immutable}. It looks like he was correct in increasing his {Aura}. He had to meditate fourteen times to get two levels, which would get more demanding for further levels. Lucas stretched and went downstairs to get some dinner.

March 27th
Four days later.
[Immutable] (Active) [Lv: 10] (Next: -) [Cost:10]
Description: The player has a high sense of self. No matter how much the player may transform, he always will return to his natural body when only he focuses. The higher the level, the more he can change back.
Temporarily cannot progress skill until the player has reached a specific point.
Can change 10% of total body mass back to normal.
Physique + 10%
Charisma + 10%
Lucas cheered. The amount of grinding he had to do to get this far was exhausting beyond belief. Looking at the evolution perk currently sitting at level eight, he came closer to failing the quest than he had imagined. Luckily, he increased his {Aura}, or he would have failed the quest.
There was no notification for completing the quest, but he imagined the perk had to finish levelling to ten before getting the rewards. But now he could rest easy until that time. However, it was strange that he couldn't progress the skill any further for now.
Tomorrow, Lucas would be especially busy. He would start martial arts training with Vincent and learn how to cook Pokemon food with his mother. Also, he had another livestream where he would combine training and a bit of incense making.
There was no time to rest, but he was happy that he was progressing well.
Now that he had finished the quest, he could turn his attention to grinding the skill. Lucas took out the book Daisy had given him and read the recipe for 'Aura Regen Incense.' Making his way outside, he moved to a recently converted garden shed that was now his little crafting factory. Lucas copied Daisy's setup, with ingredients already stored on the shelves and a table and chair on the back wall.
Lucas prepared the ingredients for the incense and started crafting. Besides the Enchanted Agarwood, the key ingredient in this recipe was Iapaya Pepper.
'{Observation}'
Iapaya Pepper | Common | Grade: 2 |
Description: It is a mild pepper that is very popular because of its energy-restorative properties. They are used in various recipes to help promote energy regeneration.
Lucas tried one pepper, and it was delicious. It was a very versatile ingredient; Aura Users had their own products for restoring their energy, and Iapaya Pepper was a vital ingredient.
Lucas spent the next four hours creating over a hundred incense, then set them aside to dry. He only got one level in the skill, but that was not unexpected. It was a crafting skill; the higher levels probably would take a lot of effort to increase.
His phone rang. "Hello."
"Dude, I need your help," Jason shouted.
"You have reached the answering machine of Lucas Walker. Please leave a message after the beep," Lucas said in a monotone voice.
"Hey!"
"Where's the fire?"
"This is serious. I think Vincent is making moves on my mother."
"Really," Lucas smirked. It was fantastic teasing material. "What is he doing?"
"Vincent won't let us go home. He forced her to quit her job so she could focus on her health," Jason protested. "Now he pampers her endlessly."
"What an utter bastard," Lucas said sarcastically.
Jason took it literally. "I know, right? He is a control freak. Only I get to look after my mother."
What a momma's boy. Lucas sighed and leaned against the wall. "Listen, they are two consenting adults. If something happens, let them sort it out between themselves. Vincent isn't a bad guy."
"You don't understand. it has been us two against the world ever since my dad did a runner."
"What are you going to do when we travel? Wouldn't it ease your mind that someone's there to look out for her?"
Jason fell silent. It seemed he had not thought of that issue.
"If you are worried, talk to your mother. If she can survive raising you, then Vincent will be a pushover."
"Asshole," Jason retorted.
"Why don't you join me for some martial arts training tomorrow? You can get some quality time with Vincent. He may be your new dad after all," Lucas teased.
"Get real. Both sound like extreme torture. Listen, I got to go; thanks for listening."
Lucas hung up and shook his head. He never thought getting involved in people's drama would be so entertaining.

March 28th
"Why are we here?"
Vincent parked the car outside of his dad's gym. It was a vast building that took up half a block of real estate. Lucas liked the aesthetic of the gym. They built the structure out of glazed bricks in alternate browns and reds, giving the gym a timeless weathered vibe. Above the entrance was an enormous sign: 'Walker's Dual Fitness.'
"I teach a class here, so instead of coming to you, I thought you could join. Plus, Dante can get a good workout as well."
"Ralts", Dante cheered. The little fiend loved to train.
They stepped out of the car and made their way inside.
"I give dad a 'B' for effort, naming this place. He has seven of these gyms spread around Kanto?"
"That's right. Pallet Town was his first gym, but it proved to be such a success that he opened another one in Viridian City. Then he moved further afield."
They stepped into the reception area, where they served people, and a cafe selling healthy food and drinks. Lucas followed Vincent to a service desk where a woman was waiting.
"Hello, Jessica. This is Lucas, the boss's son. Do you have his membership card?"
"Sure do, one moment. ," the woman smiled at him. "Hi, Lucas. It's lovely to meet you." She handed him his card.
"Same," Lucas said politely.
Just beyond the reception was the locker room. Vincent took out a uniform from his locker and ordered him to change. Lucas placed Dante down and changed into a white training suit called a Gi.
"Do we have to wear this?" Lucas asked.
"For the style of martial arts, I'm teaching? Not really."
"What kind am I learning?"
"Krav Maga. It's a mixed-martial arts system that combines disciplines like boxing, judo, jujitsu and aikido. It's hyper-aggressive and used to take opponents down quickly if you can't avoid the fight."
"Cool," Lucas said with stars in his eyes. Maybe being in a younger body affected his maturity a bit if he got this excited.
Lucas followed Vincent through the cardio area, where he saw humans and Pokemon training together. It made for an incredible sight.
Vincent stopped next to a personal trainer leading an Eevee through some speed training by having the Pokemon do running dashes.
"This is Max, who will train Dante while you're in class," Vincent said.
"All right, buddy. Have fun," Lucas placed Dante down on the ground. The Pokemon waved goodbye, and they moved on. The gym was massive, and he would probably get lost if he were by himself. Finally, they entered an enormous open room with foam mats covering the floor. Some students were already waiting, and they greeted Vincent as he arrived.
"Do some stretches while we wait for the rest of the class," Vincent said to the room. Lucas found a spot next to a middle-aged man who looked much fitter than him. Students slowly trickled in until they had the entire class had arrived.
"All right, class. We have a new student starting today. Everyone say hello to Lucas."
Lucas waved at everyone as they greeted him. He was getting used to the attention being focused on him.
"Ned, since you are so far ahead. I would like you to teach the basics to Lucas."
"Got it, Boss." A voice boomed, and a tall guy came striding towards Lucas with a fierce expression. The guy looked unusual, with a bowl-shaped haircut and thick eyebrows. His Gi looked like it was going to tear apart with the strain of his bulging muscles. Wrapped around his waist was a brown belt. What level was that in Krav Maga?
Behind him, Vincent gave him a thumbs-up and a smug expression. The bastard was setting him up, Lucas realised.
Ned stopped in front of him. "Hello, little guy. Don't worry; I will whip you into shape." He grinned and showed a set of pearly-white teeth.
Lucas was getting some deja vu vibes. Where had he seen this guy before? A few people beside him snickered as if preparing for a good show.
"Right," Ned barked. "First, call me sensei."
"Yes, sensei," Lucas said obediently. Was this guy for real?
"I can't hear you. What is with your attitude!? You will never be young like this again. Say it louder!"
"Yes, sensei," Lucas shouted.
Ned gave him a thumbs up and another blinding grin. "Perfect. Now, I need to teach you the proper stance. First, place your legs..."
An hour later, Lucas lay down on the mat, exhausted. His chest still felt the phantom pain of the palm strike Ned showed. The guy was a little too enthusiastic and sent Lucas flying.
Above him, Vincent stood with his arms crossed, smirking at him. Lucas ignored him for a second a checked out his new notification.
[Krav Maga: Stage 1] (Active) [Lv: 1] (Next: 23%) [Cost:0]
Description: Krav Maga uses a combination of disciplines to create an effective form of self-defence. It is super aggressive and takes targets down quickly. The first stage teaches the fundamentals; stance, movement, and basic attacks, such as palm strikes, eye gouges, etc.
Physique + 0.5%
Reaction speed + 1%
Perception + 1%
Lucas glared at Vincent. "You set me up, bastard."
Vincent held his hand out, and Lucas grasped it, pulling him off the floor. "What do you mean? I was giving you the expertise of my best student."
"Ned must have overdosed on natural endorphins or something. There is no way somebody like that is for real."
"Did you learn anything?" Vincent asked.
"Yes," Lucas grumbled. "But he nearly sent me into the afterlife."
"Well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger," Vincent laughed.
"Cold," Lucas said. "So I bet you feel smug for getting one up on me, right? What if I was to say that I got an interesting call from Jason last night?"
"Don't go there, brat," Vincent scowled.
"It was so sad," Lucas sighed. "I had to console him because some fiend has evil intentions towards his mother."
"It's nothing like that," Vincent said. "It's just that..."
Lucas turned serious. "Look, I talked some sense into Jason. He understands he can't always look out for his mother. So, ask her out. She might even say yes."
Vincent muttered something quietly, but Lucas caught the words. "You're already sleeping together? Wow, you work fast."
"I'm not having this conversation with you, brat." Vincent stormed away.
Lucas smirked. He felt much better now.
{0(((..)))0}
"Pokemon food differs from human food. It consists primarily of meat, plants, berries and a substance known as Chronium. It is a mineral that promotes muscle recovery in Pokemon. Red Energy constantly breaks down Pokemon's bodies and rebuilds them, so it's a vital ingredient to add to their food."
Sophia and Lucas were in her lab going through the basics of cooking Pokemon food. Calling it a lab was a bit of a stretch; it was more like a restaurant kitchen, although there was a chemical station for handling experiments.
"Where does the meat come from?" Lucas asked.
"Long ago, animals were hunted to extinction by Pokemon. However, humans spend a lot of resources to preserve the most vital animals, like livestock. They now exist on production farms that serve the needs of humans and Pokemon."
So that's why there were products such as meat and dairy foods in this world. Lucas couldn't imagine living without bacon and eggs for the rest of his life.
"So why don't I show you two recipes used to feed Dante? You want to keep his diet varied and interesting as you improve your cooking. So always experiment."
Lucas enjoyed spending time with his mother. She was very affectionate, and she was constantly hugging him or touching him casually. He learnt that she initially started as a Pokemon trainer before switching to co-ordinating, where she even won the Ribbon Cup in the Hoenn Region.
Lucas heard the story of how his parents met. His dad left out key details, such as joining the Rangers, because his mother joined first. He met his mother beforehand and was instantly smitten. A glorious chase ensued before his mother permitted him to court her because she was traditional and wanted the romance.
After an hour of cooking, Lucas had sufficiently learned enough to get the equivalent skill.
[Craft: Pokemon Food] (Passive) [Lv: 1] (Next: 8%) [Cost:0]
Description: Learning how to feed your Pokemon is essential for any trainer. They require a nutritional diet to help build their bodies and to deal with the rigours of training. The higher the skill, the more efficient the player is in creating new recipes for his Pokemon.
+ 1% to Dexterity.
Increase recipe parameters by 1%.
+1% speed to learning new recipes.
+0.5% to gain inspiration for creating a new recipe.
"Thanks for teaching me," Lucas said.
"Your welcome, Lucas. It's nice to spend some time together."
They left the kitchen, and Dante came running over and used his cuteness to beg for some food. Lucas gave him the prepared meatballs, and Dante devoured them in less than a minute.
"His appetite keeps increasing," Lucas sighed.
"Wait till you have a full party," Sophia commented.
"Right, time to do another livestream," Lucas commented, seeing Jason arrive.

March 30th
Two days later
"Okay, Dante. Now that I have prepared some incense for you, we will get serious about training your {Moves}. I think we will start with your main attack first ."
Dante nodded firmly and faced the target set up a few metres away.
Pokemon battles in this world were unlike the Pokemon games, where the target was static, so fighting was much more intense. The field was three-dimensional, and the behaviour and effects of the {Moves} had massive differences.
Lucas had done a lot of research on {Moves} in the last month and wrote notes on his observations. A Pokemon {Move} comprised several factors determining its effectiveness in battle.
What type of {Move} was it? Physical, Special or a Status Effect? Did it target the opponent, or was it a beneficial move used on itself?
The effective distance of the {Move}. Was it a short, mid, or long-range?
What was the direction and area of effect? Was it linear? Could it hit multiple targets of just one?
What was the power of the {Move}, and how much does {Aura} cost to use?
How about hidden factors that determine power? For example, {Disarming Voice} is a fairy-type move; but its delivery method is sound-based. Two aspects affected the power of sound-based attacks. First, the attack range. The further it has to travel, the weaker it gets. Second, sound-based attacks rely on the power of the Pokemon's lungs and their ability to control their breathing.
Then there were type advantages and disadvantages. Was the {Move} more effective, or did it do minor damage? Or none?
Was there a size difference between the two Pokemon? For example, a Pikachu may have the same attack Stat as a Snorlax, but because the Snorlax was much bigger than Pikachu, his Attack was superior.. The same could be said for speed, except Pikachu would be faster because of his smaller size.
Lucas switched on a video camera he had set up to record his training session with Dante. "Disarming Voice," Lucas called.
Dante opened his mouth and released a ring of pink energy that distorted the air with sound waves. It crossed the distance and hit the target, and a minor explosion ensued.
Lucas replayed the {Move} on his laptop and made some notes on the speed and power, which wasn't that great. It had also started losing momentum before it hit the target. He estimated that the most effective attack range was two metres.
It was not surprising. {Disarming Voice} was still in its infancy. Once Dante made some progress, then it would only get better.
"Okay, once more," Lucas called.
Dante repeated the attack, then sat down in exhaustion. That had taken the rest of his reserves. Now it was time for the next part of the plan. Lucas carried Dante to a small walled-off section where he had set up an incense burner. He set Dante down and retrieved an incense.
'{Observation}'
Aura Regen Incense | Common | Grade: 1 |
Description: An incense that regenerates a Pokemon's Aura over time. A beginner crafted this with inferior ingredients, which shows in the item's grade.
Effective Range: 2 metres
Potency: Restores 15 Aura in one hour.
Lucas lit the incense and placed it on the burner. "All right. I want you to practice meditation just like I demonstrated. Concentrate on controlling your breathing. It may help with your {Disarming Voice}."
Dante folded his legs like a little buddha and began meditating while the incense swirled around him. Lucas watched him for a while before he continued crafting incense while he waited.
Later that day, after a full day of training with Dante, Lucas looked at the results of the Pokemon's training.
Dante's Stats
Level:1 | Next: 0 | AP: 0 | HP: 28 | Aura: 14/14 |
Attack:14 | Defence:13 | Sp Att:24 | Sp Def:17 | Speed:22 |
Move Progression
Disarming Voice | Fairy/Special | Power: - | [6 Aura | 5%
Dante's {Aura} and {Special Attack} had increased by two just from a full day of training. However, he didn't expect every day to be like that, and there must be a limit to how much it could increase its parameters during the baby stage. He wasn't doing this training every day because even with the incense, it didn't recover mental fatigue. It would build up and start affecting Dante negatively.
He wanted to get Dante's Stats as high as possible before going to the Pokemon School for the training course. He was sure he would get into some battles, and maybe he could use them to level Dante a bit. Perhaps he will teach Dante a TM {Move} to bolster his options in battle?
Incense may seem broken, but the cost of ingredients was prohibitive. For a single incense, Lucas expected it cost around ten Pokedollars. That was for inferior ingredients. The higher the grade, the more expensive they were.
Unless you are wealthy; or strong enough to go out and harvest the ingredients yourself, then the practical uses are limited. It gave people like him an advantage in the early stages, but that diminished after a while. Essentially, if you are a good enough trainer, then you won't be lacking for Pokedollars. There were many ways of earning money outside of just Pokemon battles.
For example, there was live streaming. It always had an audience. Lucas also read of an Adventurer's Guild that listed tasks for members to complete. They may be as simple as doing deliveries or harder tasks, such as capturing a specific Pokemon for a fee. The latter was lucrative, depending on the rarity of the Pokemon.
Looking at his Attributes, Lucas grimaced. He had been slacking off in his physical training lately, and his Physique had increased by little. It was as if he started relaxing after finishing his physio. Lucas decided to visit the gym more and start getting serious about working out.
His Dexterity was the worst Attribute, although that will change once he grinds his crafting skill more. Lucas wanted to finish the Pokemon song as well and debut it on the livestream. He didn't know if he had a pleasant singing voice, but he could always find someone for that if necessary.
Lucas was going to take his secondary exam next month. With the amount of studying, he was sure he would be fine. His Intelligence Attribute helped him recall more information, which was very handy.
He only had to worry about waiting for the quest to finish. The evolution perk was sitting on level 9 at 90%. There wasn't much time left to wait.
What was going to happen?
{0(((..)))0}
Lucas tumbled off the bed. He felt strange but was too disorientated to figure the problem out. He crawled on the floor in confusion; dimly, he could feel a voice reaching out to him.
Congratulations!
The Quest: Awakened 01 has been completed.
Rewards: Rare Candy, Potion x 5, Full Heal x 3
Lucas hissed in pain. His head felt like it was on fire, and he banged it on the floor to get rid of the feeling. It didn't end there, as to his horror, he felt his face shifting. The sensation was odd to describe, a melting sensation as if his head was a piece of wax. Lucas scrambled to the dresser and opened the drawer frantically, searching for the mirror. He felt the cool glass and grabbed it, looking into the mirror. Then he wished he hadn't, as he had a clear view of his transformation.
Lucas's face reformed into something else. His head shrunk a little and became wider and rounder, ears lengthened into two narrow ridges, nose flattened and became more feline-like, and his mouth dropped lower towards his chin. Then the lights went out, and he went blind temporarily as the final transformation occurred, his eyeballs melting and forming a new pair.
Lucas got a brief glimpse of his new head before he dropped the mirror on the floor. The change was too sudden and extreme, and the weight of his new head on his shoulders did not help his equilibrium. Dark spots appeared in his vision, and he felt faint.
'Lucas, listen to me.'
Lucas shook his head as he felt a voice buzzing in his head.
'Lucas! You cannot fall unconscious. Listen to my voice!
Lucas paused as the voice halted his descent into unconsciousness. Who was that?
'It's your friendly neighbourhood, Narrator.'
The annoying fellow?
"How rude. Now, you need to focus and activate your skill if you do not want to be stuck in that form."
My skill? That's right; he had the skill to help with this problem.
'{Immutable}'
Lucas slowly felt the change come over him, his head returning to normal. He blinked and felt a small hand patting his knee.
"Ralts?"
Lucas looked at Dante, standing there anxiously in front of him. He picked him up and held him tightly. Dante patted his face in comfort as Lucas recovered from the ordeal.
Suddenly, he received a lot of new notifications.

Lucas read the first two notifications and breathed a sigh of relief. He now had six months to complete the next stage of the quest. He didn't know where to look for Doctor Goldman, but at least he had some breathing room.
The two new skills were welcome. Moving things with his mind just sounded cool. The other skill was going to be even better when he started travelling. Being able to calm wild Pokemon would help keep Jason and himself safe. However, the time for it to take effect was problematic.
The transformation had been frightening, and as his nerves settled down, he felt exhaustion creeping over him. Lucas decided to get some more sleep.
So what do you think? Next chapter, Lucas goes to the Pokemon School.
Shout out, and thanks to CrimsonStarBlade for suggesting the Calming Aura skill. Keep the ideas coming!
