Hi all,

Posting this chapter early because I will be away from the house later and won't have access to the internet. So, another time skip, and Lucas is returning to school.

Chapter 11

June 2nd

Two months later.

Lucas wiped the condensation off the mirror and looked at himself in the mirror. After four months since he had woken up from a coma, he looked like a much different person. Thanks to all the work at the gym, he was chiselled with a strong and clearly defined physique. He had grown an inch taller and stood at 5'11.

"Lucas, stop admiring yourself in the mirror. We need to go." David said from the doorway.

"Already? But I haven't had any breakfast," Lucas protested.

David rolled his eyes. "Your mother has packed you a breakfast to eat on the way, so hurry up."

Lucas was about to start his first day at Pokemon School for a two-week trainer course. It was mandatory to complete to obtain a Pokemon license, and it taught a lot of basic skills a trainer would need in the Pokemon League.

It turns out that the course was a lot more involved than he imagined. Since they were teaching how to survive in the wild, they would travel outside Pallet Town for a practical exercise. They would spend the entire second week outdoors in a camp northeast of Pallet Town. The first week would be spent in class.

Dante came running and jumped in his arms. He had grown a lot in the last two months and was now seventy centimetres tall. Ralts weren't known to get very big, but Dante was the exception. The average Ralts topped out at about sixty centimetres, usually when they were getting ready to evolve. Furthermore, Dante had already left the Baby Stage. The average time was usually four months. Was this because of his Purple Energy?

Lucas checked Dante's parameters once more to see his progress.

Dante improved a lot from two months ago. With all his training and losing the weakness of the Baby Stage, he was far stronger. However, it seemed the Pokemon had reached a limit with training Stats and now only trained to prevent the Stats from regressing. Dante would have to rely on AP to increase his power. It was both a strength and weakness of the 'System.'

He even taught Dante a TM move, {Grass Knot}. It was a very effective {Move} for Ralts as the target's weight determined the damage it dealt. With Ralts having a small body and lower defence, it was the perfect move against heavier opponents and added three new type-advantages to his arsenal.

However, it had not been easy to teach Dante. {Egg Moves} and {Moves} learned by levelling up are easier to understand because of their genetic memories obtained from their parents. However, {Grass} was a type-energy that Dante had not encountered before. It would have taken him much longer to learn if Lucas had not had a stroke of inspiration and created a new incense.

Grass-Type Insight Incense | Rare | Grade: 2 |

Description: A new creation from a budding incense master. A Pokemon under the effects of this incense gains insight into manipulating Grass-Type energy. Can be improved with further refinement. It may not be applicable to every Pokemon.

Effective Range: Five metres

Duration: Two hours

Potency: Increases grass-type energy sensing by 30%

It was an entirely new category of incense never seen before. Since there were eighteen different types in the world, it meant potentially having the market on eighteen different incenses. Lucas could imagine the Pokedollars rolling in if he sold the patent to the government. However, another way he could go was to create his own company to sell them—something to think about in the future.

It had cost him three thousand Pokedollars for {Grass Knot}, and it was a one-time use, but Lucas felt it was worth the price. Thankfully, he came into some money a few weeks ago. His grandfather had come through for him, and Lucas sold the method of his {Aura Sheen of Armement} to the Aura Guardians for ten thousand Pokedollars. Being able to protect yourself passively was, apparently, a valuable skill. Of course, this had brought attention to himself as they had offered a place at their Academy, a very exclusive place only the most promising Aura Users attended. It was based on merit and completely free, and no amount of money could get you a free pass into the Academy.

They seemed to hold his potential in high regard, even offering him a Riolu as an incentive. It was an incredible offer, as Riolu were extremely rare and held in high esteem by Aura Guardians. They and their evolved form, Lucario, were the original Pokemon that taught humans how to manipulate {Aura}. This allowed humans to gain a foothold in the world where they had struggled to survive previously. To say they were one of the most popular Pokemon was an understatement.

It was incredibly tempting, but he wanted to start his Pokemon journey more than anything else. The offer lasted until he was eighteen anyway, so there was no rush to decide.

Lucas followed dad out to the car and got in the front passenger seat.

'Lucas?'

'What is it, buddy?'

'Where are we going?'

'I told you we would start our Pokemon journey later this year, right?

'Yes'

'Well, it's not a safe place outside, so you need to be able to know how to handle yourself. The place we are going to teaches skills like that.'

'Okay'

After two months of spending time with Dante, his {Pokemon Bond} skill had levelled up a lot, and now they could communicate on a much deeper level. Lucas found it incredible how it felt to share thoughts with someone; they were already the best of friends. Across the bond, there was no hiding from the other. There was no running away after having an argument. You confronted it immediately because the bond wouldn't allow anything else. Fortunately, they could close the bond somewhat to give themselves some privacy. They didn't want to share everything.

The bond worked on bridging the language barrier, so Pokemon learned to understand what their owners were saying in English. However, he had begun to teach Dante how to read. The little guy was curious about the world and found it frustrating that he couldn't read the books in the library. A Pokemon's intelligence increases when it shares a bond with its partner, so it is essential to keep them stimulated.

The last two months were advantageous in terms of his own progress. Lucas had focused a lot on the skills he had already obtained to get them as high as he could. He found a practical setting in the 'System' that would give him a broad view of his progress with skills.

After level twenty, he noticed a steep curve in the experience needed to level the skills further. The only two skills he did not improve were {Immutable}, which was currently locked until he progressed the quest, and {Calming Aura}, which would have to be levelled outside the town.

Lucas created two new skills using his {Aura Manipulation}. He aimed for practical survival skills and wasn't disappointed with the results. {First Aid} would help if his Pokemon or Jason was hurt and there was no help around. Dash was a great skill to escape a dangerous situation or if you just wanted to move fast. It was expensive, but he had significantly increased his {Aura} from his passive bonuses. The problem was not overdoing the skill because he could potentially run into obstacles. He wouldn't be hurt because of his {Aura Sheen of Armament}. However, it would make him look incredibly stupid, though.

His favourite skill so far was {Telekinesis}. Being able to lift heavy objects and throw them far away with his mind was so awesome. He could easily pass it off as another skill he taught himself with {Aura Manipulation}, but he wanted to keep it secret for now. No need to draw even more attention to himself.

Lucas had made progress with the acoustic version of the Pokemon song that was now complete, and he was going to surprise Jason in his next livestream. It turned out that his voice was very pleasant. After some time, he even got a skill.

Their Tweak channel was now affiliated with twenty-one thousand subscribers. The response to his channel had been incredible. Lucas was making quite a bit of Pokedollars. Besides paying Jason a very generous salary, Lucas felt helpless about what he wanted to do with the money. He didn't feel like keeping it because he already had so much. His plan to sell incense was different because it was something meaningful. After all, he crafted them with his own hands. Lucas decided he would look around for a charity to sponsor.

David parked the car, and Lucas broke out of his thoughts. Opening the door, they left the vehicle, and he looked at the Pokemon school for the first time. It looked like a typical school, but with one key difference. There was a small stadium where you could compete against classmates. The school was massive, as it was the only place in Pallet Town where you could get a first and secondary education. Before his accident, Lucas had attended this school.

It was a scene of chaos. Thousands of school kids were arriving by car or bus, joining the thickening crowd as they rushed to their first classes for the day.

"Lucas," Jason shouted. The boy ran over and punched him lightly on the shoulder. His mother followed more sedately, looking much improved from two months ago. She had gained weight, and there was no grey hair visible. She looked much happier, and Lucas put that down to her relationship with Vincent. They had come out as a couple a few weeks ago, and his parents had been happy with them. Jason was more resistant, but Lucas calmly explained- slapped the boy silly to bring him to his senses.

"Sand!"

Lucas looked down and noticed the small Sandshrew hiding behind Jason. Dante approached the Pokemon and poked him curiously.

"Well, hello there. Where did you come from?"

"Vincent got him for me," Jason muttered. He got a slap on the head from his mother.

"I bet he paid a fair bit of money to get him for you. At least pretend to be grateful," Sarah scolded.

"Wait, I thought you were already getting a Pokemon next month?" Lucas asked.

"The Pokemon you get for free is a lottery," Davis said. "You may get something that fits your style, but the chances are it is not a Pokemon that is suited for you."

"Yep. Sandshrew was on my wishlist for the Pokemon I wanted. I wonder how Vincent knew?" Jason raised an eyebrow at his mother.

"Hello, Lucas. Excited for today?" Sarah asked, completely ignoring her son's question.

"I guess so. Next week is going to be much better," Lucas replied.

David grimaced. "Don't remind me. With your propensity for getting into trouble, I'm afraid to think what will happen."

"It's not my fault that I'm such a hero who bravely puts his life in danger for others," Lucas sighed dramatically. "I must get it from grandad."

"You little brat," David laughed. "Now, you better get going; you don't want to be late."

They entered the school, consulted their schedule, and followed the directions to their class. When they arrived, Lucas and Jason took a seat at the back. Dante and Sandslash sat on the table in front of them.

Lucas looked around curiously. The room looked like it could fit about fifty to sixty students, and half the class was already there. They were primarily teenagers around his age, but a few older students that didn't look older than twenty.

Lucas turned to Jason, who was busy checking out a cute girl in front of them. The boy sure had a one-track mind.

"So, does Sandshrew have a name?" Lucas asked.

"Sand?" Sandshrew turned its head and stared at Jason.

Jason rubbed Sandshrew's head. "I'm terrible with names, okay? I can't think of one suitable."

"I think your problem is your being too fussy," Lucas commented.

Jason rubbed his chin. "What about Sandy?"

Sandshrew collapsed on the table in despair. Lucas sighed and patted the Pokemon in sympathy. A scream at the door occurred, and Lucas looked over in curiosity.

A girl stood in the doorway, and she was pointing at him. "It's Lucas."

Lucas felt a particular dread fall over him as the girl rushed over.

"Lucas, I watched your last livestream. You were so cool. Oh my god, is this Dante? He's so much cuter in person." The girl chattered, occasionally flipping her hair over her shoulders and glancing at him beneath her lashes. Lucas groaned and resisted the urge to hit his head on the desk. Jason snickered beside him, not even bothering to hide his amusement.

Unfortunately, that attracted the attention of the other females in the class, and some walked over. The cute girl sitting in front of him spun around and squealed. "Lucas. It's you."

Jason repeated his Pokemon's actions and sank into his chair in despair.

Lucas sat in his seat, surrounded by a bunch of females. Half of them were subscribed to his channel, and the other half pulled their phones out and promised to join his channel right there and then. Dante suffered under several hugs. Lucas talked to them patiently, trying not to be too annoyed. It wasn't the first time that he had encountered this situation.

"All right, everyone to their seats." The teacher called from the front. The girls scrambled to take their seats, and Lucas sighed in relief.

'Those girls were scary.'

'I know, buddy. The price of fame.'

Lucas turned and focused on the teacher. The older middle-aged woman looked stern and eyed them beadily as if looking for troublemakers. She seemed very old-fashioned, dressed in a grey pantsuit with a string of pearls around her neck. Her hair was pulled severely into a tight knot, which exaggerated her thin face and sharp cheekbones.

"My name is Mrs Price, and I will lead this class for the next two weeks. As you all know, you must pass this course to get a trainer's license, but it isn't too hard. The hardest part will be the survival practice starting next week."

"Can we start it now?" A boy shouted.

Mrs Price pushed her square glasses up her nose. "You may think that theoretical knowledge is unimportant, but that is the furthest from the truth. This morning, we will first go over the vital information a trainer needs to know to succeed. There is a binder in front of you with paper to take notes; don't slack off and think I will go easy on you. Now, those aiming to become trainers, raise your hands."

About eighty per cent of the class raised their hands, including Lucas.

Mrs Price nodded, turned towards the whiteboard, and grabbed a marker. She wrote 'Trainer Levels.'

"Trainers are rated by levels, showing the trainer's expertise and accomplishments in the Pokemon Circuit. The higher your level, the more options you have; how many Pokemon you may have in your team, the services available, and the discounts. However, it also increases your responsibility when an emergency happens. In most cases, that would be a wild Pokemon attacking civilians. The rating system is helpful because the government have a general idea of your strength and will only send you into an emergency if you can handle the situation."

Mrs Price looked around the classroom. "Any questions?"

She continued after she had no response. "I will only speak about the first three, known as the Junior levels. They are Student, Advanced Student and Amateur. These three are within the realms of the Junior Circuit, which is the lowest division of the Pokemon Championship."

Even though he knew most of the subject, Lucas wrote down the information diligently.

"The first level restricts you to four Pokemon in your team. The reason is that Pokemon are not cheap, and many trainers have gotten into strife from not having enough Pokedallars to care for their Pokemon in the past.

You also get a ten per cent discount with trainer services, such as the Pokemon Center, Pokemart, and Trainer facilities. To advance to the next level, you must accumulate a thousand points and acquire the first two Junior badges from the Gyms. Points are earned by winning Pokemon battles with other trainers and placing well in minor contests. Take note that only sanctioned battles will earn you points."

Lucas frowned at the unfamiliar term. Raising his hand, the teacher pointed at him. "What is a sanctioned battle?"

"It is any battle that takes place at a location set up by the league that can referee and record your battles," Mrs Price said. "These locations are usually found in towns and cities, but some are also set up outside. Usually, they are located at rest areas where other services are provided. The Pokemon School is one of the few in Pallet Town."

"Can you still earn Pokedollars from unsanctioned battles?" Lucas asked.

"I do not recommend it, but yes, you can. However, if there is a dispute with a trainer about payment, you will need compelling evidence to force the trainer to pay. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do. It is the same if one trainer commits a crime, such as killing your Pokemon after you forfeit a battle."

Lucas hummed. It made a lot of sense since there was no reliable way of recording trainer battles everywhere, and not being paid for winning a fight sucked. Both trainers had to wager Pokedollars, which went to the victor. How much you could wager depended on your Pokemon level, and you could not earn any money or points from a trainer whose level was lower than yours. It was to avoid unscrupulous trainers taking advantage of less experienced trainers.

Mrs Price continued. "Now, about the Gyms themselves. They are built like a pagoda, a series of floors you must climb to get your Gym badge. In your case, you have to climb to the fourth floor. On the Junior circuit, you do not face the Gym leader but one of their students. Usually, someone who shows promise and is taken on as an apprentice. The battle rules will change depending on how many gym badges you have acquired, such as the number of Pokemon you have to defeat. As for the rewards..."

Lucas placed his tray down and joined Jason at the table in the canteen. They were on their lunch break after spending the last four hours in class. Even though he was looking forward to the practical exercise next week, he enjoyed learning more about how the Pokemon League worked.

Taking his bag off his shoulder, he opened it and took out a container for Dante, who tore into his food. Jason did the same for Sandshrew. The canteen offered a wide variety of foods for humans and Pokemon, but he didn't trust anything for Dante that wasn't cooked by himself or his mother.

"So I was thinking of naming her Shrewdy. What do you think?" Jason said with an expression of pride.

"I think Sandshrew needs to trade in her owner for another," Lucas laughed.

"Well, you think of a name if you think you're so smart." Jason huffed, starting to eat his food.

Lucas stared at Sandshrew in consideration. "Sandee," he finally said.

"What!? That was my first choice."

"Nope. It's spelt with two 'e's and not a 'y'. Context is important."

Sandshrew trilled a positive tone, and Jason turned to her. "She likes it," Jason said in a betrayed tone. Even though their bond was new, it was enough to communicate her positive reaction to her name.

'What do you think, Dante? I'm so good with names.'

'I think I got lucky with the name you chose.'

Lucas turned away from his Pokemon with a sniff. He looked around the canteen, filled almost to the brim with students. However, one table was half-empty, and everybody else was giving the table a wide berth. The students at the table were dressed shabbily and looked to be in their self-contained world.

"Who are they?" Lucas asked.

Jason followed his gaze and shrugged, returning to his food.

"They are from the New Hope Orphanage," a voice said.

It was the annoying girl from his class. The off-putting thing about the girl was that she looked insincere. She dressed in a very short skirt and open blouse and painted a liberal amount of makeup on her face. Her every move was calculated, always trying to show her best side. He would have told her to take a hike if she wasn't his subscriber.

"Yep, a bunch of losers who lost their parents," she laughed derisively. "They rely on the government for handouts, which come from our pockets."

Lucas's eyebrows furrowed. Was this girl for real? "You mean your parent's pockets? It doesn't look like you are suffering."

The girl's face hardened. "Your parents are filthy rich. So why are you getting so high and mighty."

"Are you sure we should be looking in this place?"

"It doesn't hurt to look. We must keep up appearances."

Lucas bumped into the woman as she turned around abruptly. "Watch where you are going, brat. Look, you dirtied my dress."

Lucas stood up from the ground and dusted himself off, holding back tears.

"Hey, apologise right now," the man said. "You don't go touching your betters."

"Ah, what an ugly face. Move along before I get upset."

Lucas ran away from the woman's mocking laughter.

"You have no idea what you are saying," Lucas snarled. "Please leave."

The girl scowled and left in a huff.

"Wow, dude," Jason said. "Not that I don't agree with the sentiment, but what got you so angry?"

Lucas took out his phone and started searching for New Hope Orphanage. "Those kinds of people are the worst."

What was wrong with an orphanage if they couldn't even afford to dress the orphans appropriately? Looking at the webpage, it certainly didn't look like it was lacking money. The city's mayor even endorsed the place, but it could be simply a publicity stunt. Lucas noted the address and decided to investigate later.

They finished their lunch and were about to leave when they were interrupted.

"Bastard, what did you say to my sister," the boy said.

"Who is your sister?"

"She was here a few minutes ago. Don't play dumb."

Lucas rubbed his chin in thought. "Ah, that girl. Is she your sister? You have my condolences."

"Why don't I teach you a lesson on how to treat a girl? Meet me at the stadium for a Pokemon battle."

"How old are you anyway?" Jason argued. "Shouldn't you already have left school to become a trainer?"

The boy scowled, his broad face reddening slowly in embarrassment.

"Now, don't embarrass him by pointing out his faults, Jason." Lucas sighed. "Isn't it obvious? He must not have passed his secondary exam yet."

Jason bowed his head in shame. "Forgive me, dude. Pointing that out was rude."

"Meet me in the ring if you dare," the boy stormed away.

"Meh. We still have time. What do you say, Dante? Ready for your first battle."

'I will wipe the floor with that boy.' Dante lifted his head and did the cutest imitation of a sneer.

{0(((..)))0}

Lucas stood on the stage with Dante. Opposite him was the boy who challenged him to a Pokemon battle. He held a Pokeball in his hand.

A man stood at the side, one of the teachers. He was going to be the referee for the match. Hundreds of students occupied the seats, who came to spectate the fights during lunch.

"Are both of you ready?" The man asked. "Remember, this is a friendly fight. If an opponent forfeits, or the Pokemon faints, then you must stop attacking. Failing to do so might affect your chances of receiving a trainer's license.

Lucas nodded to Dante, who stepped into the ring. The boy released his Pokemon onto the stage. A Graveller.

New Pokedex Entry: Graveller

100 Experience, 10 Pokedollars earned.

An Alakazam stood nearby, and it raised a Barrier around the stage.

Lucas quickly read through the parameters of the Graveller and raised his eyebrows. Fighting a level ten evolved Pokemon would usually be challenging, but Graveller had a severe disadvantage.

"Beat him up, Marcus!" A girl called from the seats.

"Show that boulder what you can do, Dante," Jason shouted.

"Ready...Fight." The man called.

The stage was huge, and the two Pokemon had a gap of twenty metres between them.

Ralts has copied the foe's ability; Sand Veil.

Lucas smirked.

"Graveller, {Sandstorm}," Marcus called. Graveller glowed a golden colour, and sand began to swirl around the stage.

Lucas was confused. Marcus didn't speak over his bond with his Pokemon? Why was he speaking out loud? He shook his head and focused on the fight.

'Dante, close the distance: five meters out, use {Grass Knot}.'

Dante scuttled across the stage with his tiny legs, closing the distance quickly. The stage was now covered in a cloud of sand that swirled around and obscured the Pokemon.

Dante used {Grass Knot}. Thick vines erupted from Dante's feet and shot straight for the Graveller. He could not avoid it because his trainer could not react in time. Not to mention, Gravellers speed was far out-stripped by Dante's.

The thick vines wrapped around the Graveller and lifted the Pokemon in the air. Then it violently slammed down the Pokemon into the ground.

Graveller has taken 136 Damage. It's super effective x 2!

[One Hit KO!] Graveller has fainted.

'Stop attacking. The Graveller has fainted.'

Dante stopped the attack, and the vines disappeared. The sandstorm disappeared, and Graveller was revealed on the ground, unconscious.

The referee lifted his flag. "Graveller is unable to fight. Victory goes to the Ralts."

The crowd roared in excitement. Jason began jumping around like a lunatic.

Marcus slumped to the ground in shock. "But how?"

Lucas passed Dante and patted him on the head in thanks.

He held out a hand and pulled him up off the ground. "You were unlucky. It was a terrible matchup." Lucas said.

"What was that grass move?" Marcus looked at his Graveller, who was being attended by Chansey.

"It's called {Grass Knot}. It deals more damage the heavier the opponent. I imagine the power was a hundred at least. Combined with the double-type disadvantage, it was no surprise he lost so badly."

"But I had Sandstorm in effect. The Sandstorm should have damaged your Ralts. Plus, it should have lost accuracy."

"You were even more unlucky. Ralts special ability is {Trace}, which copies the special ability of its opponent. I'm guessing your Graveller has {Sand Veil}?"

Marcus groaned in annoyance. Graveller was back on his feet, and Marcus thanked him before returning him to his ball. "That sucked."

"I'm sorry I insulted your sister. I would have reacted the same if someone had bullied mine. But she said some things that pissed me off, and I wasn't very polite."

"That sounds like Valerie," Marcus shook his head. "Forget it. I know how she can get."

Lucas walked back down the stage. He felt conflicted. That fight was unsatisfying, but at least he got his first win.

Now that he had a new title, he would have to consider using his last choice for {Arceus Blessing}. But what kind of skill would be the most useful?

So what do you think? The fight was short, but I wanted an easy first battle for Dante. They will not be that easy going forward.

Shout out, and thanks to GiltLawyer9000 for suggesting the First Aid skill and CrimsonStarblade for the Dash skill.
