Chapter 16
Kara wakes to a thin strip of sunlight coming through the window and dark hair fanned across her chest. She leaves one hand lightly tracing up and down Lena's back as she brings the other up to brush the hair out of her fiancée's face.
She takes a deep breath, the love and happiness she feels in this moment nearly brings her to tears as she looks down at Lena, peaceful in sleep. She feels so lucky not only that Lena said yes but that after everything they've been through, Lena loves her and wants to spend the rest of their lives together.
She leaves a kiss on Lena's forehead as she carefully rolls them over and slides out of bed. She throws on a shirt and leaves, pausing in the doorway to look at the love of her life as she pulls the pillow close and settles back down. Kara quickly heads to the kitchen and being as silent as possible, starts the coffee maker and fixes Lena oatmeal with her favorite fruit and an omelet. Once the food is ready, Kara pulls out a tray, pours a mug of coffee, and loads the plates and mug and a plumeria onto the tray and carries it back into the bedroom. She carefully sets it onto the bedside table and slides back into bed, removing the pillow from Lena's grip and carefully waking her. Lena makes a small noise, moving back into the warmth of Kara's embrace and slowly blinks as she wakes. A smile spreads across her face as she kisses the closest bare expanse of Kara's skin.
"Good morning", Kara says, kissing Lena's forehead.
"Great morning", Lena mumbles, sitting up to kiss Kara.
"I made breakfast", Kara says, reaching for the tray and resting it over their legs.
Lena tears up at the simple display that is so Kara and makes her feel more loved than she ever has. "Thank you darling", she says, kissing her again before Kara forces her to eat.
After breakfast in bed, the women go to shower off last night and this morning, together to conserve water of course, before they have to be at Ruby's game. When they finish, Kara carries the tray back into the kitchen and Lena takes the mug to refill with coffee.
Kara's phone rings and seeing that it's Cat Grant, Kara gives Lena a questioning look and at Lena's nod takes the call.
Lena settles onto a stool at the bar with a fresh cup of coffee and watches as Kara paces across the room talking to Cat with breaks in the middle of sentences which Lena assumes is Cat butting in.
"Of course, Ms. Grant", Kara says. "Yes, but I have to… of course Ms. Grant. No one will get the story before CATCO".
Lena laughs as her girlfriend gives her a pleading look. "Please, Lena. Help", Kara whispers. Lena shrugs and continues drinking her coffee watching as Kara squirms under the onslaught of Cat Grant. "She is a CEO, she's busy but… of course I will convince her to come in", Kara says, finally getting Cat to hang up. Her shoulder slump as the phone goes silent and she turns to Lena, "You couldn't have helped with that", she whines, coming closer to her fiancée.
"You had it handled darling", Lena says, setting her coffee mug down and pulling Kara close until she's standing between her legs.
"How did she find out so quickly? No one saw us, we were on the roof", Lena asks.
"She figured it out", Kara mutters into Lena's neck.
"What was that?", Lena says.
Kara sighs pulling out of Lena's neck, "When I asked for yesterday and today off despite it being print days, Cat asked me why it had to be a Thursday and Friday and tried to get me to switch to Monday and Tuesday, but I said it had to be Thursday because it was our anniversary".
"And then she saw your blush and fidgeting but also excitement and figured out that you were proposing", Lena correctly guesses. Kara nods affirmatively. "Damn she is good", Lena says, in admiration.
"I wish she wasn't so good", Kara says.
"We'll enjoy our weekend as a newly engaged couple, and we can do the interview sometime next week. I'll check with Jess and figure out a morning to do it and we can go get lunch after", Lena offers.
"Really?", Kara looks up quickly at the prospect of food.
"Of course, darling", Lena says, "think of it as an incentive to make it through the interview".
Kara kisses her and they both melt into the kiss. When Lena pulls away to catch her breath, Kara moves across her jaw to Lena's neck and leaves a trail of kisses in her wake.
"Darling", Lena says breathily, "Not that I don't love this and would love to go back into the bedroom, but Ruby has her championship game today".
Kara leaves a kiss on the mole on Lena's neck and pulls back, whining at being stopped. "Ok, ok", she says, kissing Lena deeply, "Go get ready, I'll clean up breakfast".
"Thank you, darling", Lena says, leaving another kiss on Kara's lips as she slides off the stool, her hands on Kara's shoulders.
"If you kiss me again, I will not be held responsible for my actions", Kara whines, her hands on Lena's hips as she slid down.
"Sorry I can't help it", Lena smirks, kissing her again, "I just want to kiss my fiancée".
Kara moans low and pulls Lena into her, kissing her deeply before speeding them into the bedroom and standing Lena near the closet. "You get dressed while I clean and we will finish this later", Kara says, before leaving the room before she can get pulled into bed with Lena.
After a few more distractions, Kara finally flies them to the field, and they find their seats just as the ref blows the whistle for the teams to take the field.
"Hey, you made it", Alex says, barely taking her eyes off the field.
"Lena", Sam says, turning to the new arrivals, completely ignoring Ruby's game, "About time you got out of bed. Although I can't blame you. How is engaged sex?".
"Amazing", Lena smirks, as Kara blushes and Alex releases a sound, half embarrassed and half protesting.
Eliza walks up at this point and Sam changes topics. "Let me see it", Sam squeals, reaching for Lena's right hand.
Lena holds out her arm showing off the sparkling ring Kara made and the bracelet that she made.
Eliza leans over too, her hand on Kara's shoulder, "It's beautiful sweetie".
"Damn Kara", Sam whistles low, "You have good taste".
Kara blushes as Lena says, "Actually she made it".
"Even more impressive", Sam says before turning to Alex, "Why aren't you this romantic?".
"I'm here cheering on your daughter in her championship game that you aren't paying attention to", Alex teases, leaning into Sam, "This isn't doing it for you".
"Oh, it is", Sam whispers into Alex's ear before kissing her.
"I need the full story later", Sam says to Lena and Kara before turning back to the game.
Sam thought Alex was an active participant in Ruby's previous games, but nothing could prepare her for championship, momma bear, protective Alex. Despite Ruby's protestations that she was fine, and her knee didn't hurt at all, Alex still took her to the DEO to MRI and X-Ray her leg, just to make sure. Of course, Sam couldn't argue that an undiagnosed injury could only worsen with strenuous activity, but Ruby seemed fine other than her annoyance at Alex's overreacting.
Once Alex was convinced that Ruby was physically fine, she relaxed… until she saw the refs. Apparently it was the same referee that had previously officiated one of Ruy's past games and according to Alex, was biased against the Davis High Blue Devils.
The game was going well, and Ruby's team was off to a quick lead with a score by Julia off a pass from Ruby. Sarah, their goalie, had a couple of clean saves that turned into strong attacks on the opposing goal, only to be barely tipped out by the other team's defense.
Alex was a ball of nerves beside Sam, bouncing her knee and cracking her knuckles. Her anxiety was so high, even Sam's calming hand on her thigh couldn't stop the movement.
The groups erupted in cheers when Ruby scored their second goal with a nice kick right into the opposite corner and after nearly screaming herself hoarse, Alex settled back into her seat much calmer than before.
The teams retreated to their benches at halftime, gulping water, and Sam spent the time calming Alex down.
"I know you worry but her leg is fine and they're winning", Sam says, "besides she doesn't care if they win or lose, just look at the smile on her face".
"Alex doesn't understand smiling during a competition if you're not winning", Eliza says, laying a hand on her daughter's shoulder.
"Aren't I supposed to be the one making you calm down", Alex jokes to Sam, her nerves settling.
"Nah, I'm the supportive mom", Sam says, "You're the hockey mom type that would punch out a ref".
Alex turns to her in indignation as Kara barely contains her laughs behind them, "Remember when you played hockey and Eliza nearly got beat up by Olivia's mom because you knocked her daughter down".
Alex's face goes red at the memory as Sam laughs, "Eliza was a hockey mom… no way", she says, looking over at Eliza.
"Only for a season because Alex was asked to leave the league", Kara laughs.
"I do remember that", Eliza adds, laughing, "it was a youth team so the players couldn't fully check each other. Alex didn't actually check the girl; it was more of a steam rolling".
Alex is literally saved by the whistle and the group turns back to the game as the other team claims possession.
After a nerve wracking second half, in which the other team caught up to tie the game at 3-3, they end up adding two minutes of play time to the clock and Alex's nerves are at an all-time high, and so are Sam's based on the way her nails are digging into Alex's thigh.
When Ruby gets a steal and makes a break, weaving in and out of defenders, all five women are on their feet, cheering on the teenager as she approaches the goal.
Ruby pulls a light-footed move that lets her sneak past the last defender and gets a good angle on the goal and lets the ball fly. With five seconds left on the clock, the whole crowd is silent as the ball soars through the air. The goalie, despite all her fingertip saves early in the game, is just short of the ball as it sails past, and everything erupts.
The team is dogpiling on top of Ruby in the middle of the field as their half of the stands is giving her a standing ovation. Ruby comes out of the pile, hoisted on Julia and Sarah's shoulders with the rest of the team surrounding them. Sam's heart feels full at the smile on her daughter's face and the sniff she hears come from beside her.
"Are you crying too?", she asks, glancing over at Alex.
"No", she says, her voice breaking, "its allergies".
Sam lets out a watery laugh and wraps her arm around Alex's waist, her head falling onto her shoulder, "Yeah me too. She looks so happy".
"Yeah, she does", Alex says, throwing an arm around Sam's shoulders and laying a kiss on her head. Both of them give a thumbs up to Ruby when she looks over them.
"Wonderful game", Eliza says, "I seem to remember Jeremiah teaching you that move she used".
"Yeah I…", Alex starts, "I pulled it on her three years ago, but her legs weren't quite long enough to wrap around like that. I guess she's been practicing. I haven't seen her do it since she tried so hard in the park that day".
Sam looks up at her and leaves a kiss on Alex's clenched jaw.
After the team's victorious cry to break the huddle, Ruby is the first to make it over to the stands and flings herself into Sam's arms first. Alex quickly has her hands on them to steady them and Ruby pulls her into the hug too.
Eliza, Kara, and Lena stay back letting the family enjoy this moment as Ruby excitedly babbles into their ears every moment of the game they just watched. They eventually break and Ruby hugs Eliza next, thanking her for coming before moving to Lena and Kara and demanding to see the rings.
"You're just like your mother", Lena says, as they hold out their hands.
"Finally", Ruby says, ignoring Lena's comment, "Only took you two forever".
"We've only been dating a year", Kara argues. Ruby doesn't answer, just raising her brow like Lena, and Kara knows what that look means. She looks to Lena for help and seeing none, admits, "Ok fine yes we've been 'dating' for six years", she says, adding in air quotes.
Lena kisses Kara's cheek before turning back to Ruby and congratulating her on the game. The group walks off, eager to enjoy the rest of the night celebrating and Lena and Kara accept that they will end up telling every detail of their proposals multiple times.
The group finally breaks up late in the night. Eliza saying goodbye first and catching a cab back to Alex's apartment. Kara and Lena leave not much later, ignoring Sam's suggestive, but not entirely wrong, comments and laughing at Alex's red face.
They get back to the penthouse quickly, ready to enjoy the weekend and their new engagement. They celebrate more until the early morning when they're both finally sated and exhausted and fall asleep in each other's arms.
AN: Shorter chapter but I wanted to get this one out on time and this was the best place to end it before things ramp up.
