Vivian checked the clock before packing up her parchment and quill just as Sirius walked into the common room. "Finally heading out, eh?" he said, falling back into one of the armchairs. "Where are you off to?"
"The library," she answered as she finished stashing everything in her bookbag.
"You're joking right?" Sirius said, his eyes wide in disbelief. "Haven't you been studying this whole time? Why in the bloody…are you mental? Why would you go to the library to study more?" He was standing now with his arms folding leaning against the back of the armchair.
"I haven't been studying. I'm not that bored." She laughed working her way into her coat and hat. "I'm going to study now because Sev promised to help me with potions and I need all the help I can get when we aren't working in groups."Sirius walked over to the chair he'd laid his coat on before throwing it back on.
"Well I'd best see how the great potion master Snev…" he coughed before correcting himself, "...Severus is at teaching. Maybe even I could learn something new." Vivian looked at him skeptically. Whatever Sirius was up to she doubted it would be learning.
"As long as you don't interrupt my lesson then I guess you can come along. Why don't you get along? I can see why you wouldn't be friends, but you both go out of your way to torment each other."
"He is a Slythrin." He stated simply. Vivian looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, but if that was all it was you'd be pranking the whole house. I mean you do a fair bit of that, but more so towards Sev and his friends." Sirius remained silent for a while.
"I've heard him mention things about pure-bloods being superior. A load of bloody rubbish." He kicked angrily at a bit of ice that went skidding down the hallway and into the courtyard. Vivian stayed silent thinking. She'd had more than inkling of what Sev's friends' believed from the times she'd met their families. However, she'd thought Sev smarter than that. It was an unrealistic and absurd idea. A part of her had hoped he'd just needed friends to feel included, but now she wasn't so sure. Chewing on her bottom lip she remained quiet the rest of the walk. Both her and Sirius rushed through the library doors as the wind began to pick up swirling snow into the entrance before some magic blew the snow back out. Seeing the rows upon rows of books gave her the inspiration she needed. Sev was smart. There was only one way to help him face reality. The library was about to be seeing her a lot more.
Severus sat alone with potion books of various kinds sprawled over the table. His eyes narrowed upon seeing them approach. He quickly stacked them into three neat piles.
Vivian glanced between the two boys, "Sirius decided to join. Be nice. Both of you."
"Black."
"Snape."
Severus motioned to the seat next to him. Vivian sighed trying to mentally prepare herself. Sitting she quickly pulled out her paper and quill while Sirius settled into the chair directly across from her. Severus turned out to be a very adept teacher. His thorough knowledge allowed him to explain things more simply than the text Professor Slughorn often wrote on the board. The trouble came when it came to figuring out why she kept making mistakes. He was at a loss. She understood the ingredients and preparation, but kept messing up in the execution. Taking a deep breath she steeled herself for the third attempt when suddenly a bookmark made of thick black paper with gold and red embellishments landed on the page.
"Put it under the step you're working on. Once you've finished it, move it down to the next step. Regulus had the same problem at home." Sirius said casually leaning back in his seat. He'd been so quiet she'd thought he'd fallen asleep somewhere around her first attempt. She placed the bookmark skeptically down on the page before going through the potion once again. She dropped the last ingredient. She crossed her fingers under the table. The potion began to change from a murky green into a vibrant yellow. She blew out a rush of air from her breath that she'd been holding in.
"I did it!" She yelled standing up in excitement. A stern hush from the librarian had her quickly sitting down. Her face flushed from both embarrassment and relief. She actually had a chance at passing potions now. "Thank you both!" She half whispered looking between them. "Now if you'd both play nice I think the second semester will go smoothly," She added teasingly. "It would be nice for everyone if you'd all just pretend to be nice." Severus scrunched his nose. Seeing the disdain and disgust on both their faces she rolled her eyes, "I'm not asking you to be friends. Just don't be enemies. Or even ignore each other!" Severus busied himself with the books while Sirius simply grunted. Well, it was worth a shot, she thought. Picking up her things she couldn't help shaking her head at their stubbornness.
