Mayumi pushed open a paper window, dust flew to her face, she coughed loudly before cleaning the frames rigorously. It's rather surprising how despite Shan's room appearing gleam with high class furniture, it's not hard to find sordid areas underneath the table or behind the shelf. Heavy dust gathered in places that are away from the visitor's glance, almost making his home feel a facade. It wouldn't be surprising if Shan is using the lavish decorative gifts to hide such woeful neglect. It's obvious he did not employ a cleaner before, as there is a surprising number of underlying issues that must be resolved.
The broomstick she is holding became grey with only one swing, much to Mayumi's grimace. For a renowned scholar who climbed to the top of the world's hardest examination, he is better at hiding the problem then facing it. It could be years, decades even. No one know when someone bothered to spring clean the house.
The woman coughed loudly upon dusting the windows. She then decided to wear a piece of cloth to cover the mouth. She wondered if Shan is genuinely in need of such help or perhaps these are just menial work to keep her occupied. She did feel somewhat dishonorable as their cooperative agreement did came at some expense of the scholar. But in order to dispel 'grotesque rumors' festering amongst the Upper Ring's aristocracy, Shan's impeccable reputation as an upstanding scholar depends on their ability to work together. While some might consider it wasteful for an elite warrior to flounder their talent on meagre choirs, Mayumi believe every single day is like a difficult battle, even if the weapon is just a makeshift broomstick. The task may be laborious, but so long as she can see her younger sibling safe and oblivious, all the tiredness can easily dissipate. It's incredible how so much have transpired last night. One would say it is a miracle that Mayumi made it back relatively unscathed, particularly having her memories untainted. Even the painful sensation from the stomach have healed, which made her even more energetic in today's tasks.
But one concern continuously plagues Mayumi's mind. Whenever she walked past the courtyard, the older sister couldn't stop herself from taking small glances at the lesson that is taking place. Right now, all aspect of this small, secluded compound remains at peace. But danger can strike any moment without warning. For Ba Sing Se has a peaceful appearance, but that does not mean one can lower their guard in the face of many adversaries in the shadow. Despite all appear peaceful in the siheyuan, her mind cannot forget the fear and danger that occurred just last night.
It's all just a delicate peace. It's soothing and quiet, but it might all just be temporary at the same time. Unlike the regular citizens who are mostly clueless of the hidden danger lurking in the dark, she can only enjoy this peace cautiously. In this city of walls and secrets, two forces are putting them in danger.
One is the fanatical, zealous and delusional Acolytes of San Bao. Like a leech, it hides underneath a cover while trying to undermine the city. They may be foolish in believing in the will of one man, but personal experience informed her that they certainly would have no qualm in killing the innocent, as they drew their belief has already clouded their morality. She does not know why they are targeting Kyoshi Island, which is why cooperating with the other threat might offer a clue.
The Dai Li is also a major concern. The cultural guardians supposedly know all and sees all. Fighting even one of them would be a death sentence. But their true danger lies in their ability to gather information, secrets that can be used to their advantage.
The latter knows too much, uncomfortably so. Perhaps having Satchiko as a student to a renowned scholar can serve as a form of deterrent. The Dai Li are crafty and calculated, which is why they will think twice before apprehending the student of none other than Shan the White Scholar. For the one who earnt the title of Zhuangyuan in this year's imperial examination, his qualifications are destined to reach a great height in the city's administration. But considering the actions of that one Dai Li last night, even the reserved and sharp-tongued Shan may be no match to the even more ruthless and insidious nature of the Dai Li.
What desire does Shan have that the Dai Li can exploit? What does it take to pressure those who have no qualm of acting spitefully towards noble aristocracy? Satchiko's safety was used to threaten Mayumi into submission, which is why such an underhanded tactic can also apply to the White Scholar.
Or can it?
So far, there is not a single member of Shan's family that can be used to blackmail him. The secret police can certainly overpower a gentleman who has never touch a weapon in his life, but it might be more difficult to force loyalty onto a scholar who is very stubborn. But so far, none of Shan's relatives have showed up to his home. Unless he is the last of his kin, there would be at least one family member the secret police can use to coerce this gentleman. It would be interesting to witness how Shan may behave upon meeting a Dai Li. As a scholar, he can easily out-talk them. But should the latter employ force, it's not hard to imagine a pitiful look of the prideful scholar, dirtied his flawless looking changshan robe while being manhandled with rock gloves.
Mayumi pushed aside those thoughts for now. She began to sweep the stone floor near each room's entrances, trying to minimize the noise as much as possible. The older sister would frequently glance at the center of the yard, assessing the wellbeing of a particular person.
Satchiko is currently studying in the middle of the courtyard, sitting on the ground underneath the shade of tree. She would repeatedly scratch her forehead, both in confusion and frustration. The small table in front of her has a thick book of philosophy opened, countless words dazzled her eyes, making the girl feel even more illiterate than she already is. She couldn't even understand most of the written syllables. As Shan explained the hidden meaning behind an idiom in relation to a relevant historical event, she is still trying to understand the basics of what each word meant to represent. All of Hudie's help was no use in face of onslaught by Shan's heavy textbooks. The worst of all, that man placed a whole stack of them, piling them upward like a small hill that could bury her alive. It's like a tower that can fall on her if the wind decides to topple them.
Without armor and face paint, Satchiko felt inadequate. Unless in a skirmish with pirates, she is nothing more but a simpleminded girl who struggles to read and write like fellow peers. But that doesn't mean she isn't trying. While intellectually the teen leaves much to be desired, she is determined to reach an acceptable level of competence. So much of her life has already been served on a silver plate, too many opportunities were neither earned nor deserved. Now that Mayumi has found a paramount scholar to be her tutor, the pressure has only exacerbated. No excuses would enough if she failed spectacularly.
The tutor wields his iconic foldable fan as a pointer to the board, pacing around regularly. Sometimes he would snap them closed to even point it at her, all to make her focus on the lesson.
Satchiko fought hard not to react defensively like her training, as years of sparring with metal fans honed a fast reactivity, which is not useful at all in a learning environment. Like a fish driven out of its water, the young Kyoshi Warrior tries to focus her mind and body on learning instead of fighting. She held the book in front of her tighter, feeling the stiffness of the pages. In her heart, there is no way to comprehend everything being taught. Shan's teaching method tried to be rudimentary, but it largely involves memorization of words and sentences, which doesn't encourage her mind to think. She felt it's more about answering the right question rather than understanding how something works.
Shan repeated a philosophical concept, one that Satchiko cannot grasp in class. This is supposed to assist in her understanding of Earth Kingdom history, primarily about the cultural and historical aspects that are tied to this philosophy that pioneered governing. Satchiko scratched her head intensely. What does any of this have to do with Earthbending?
"The actions throughout a few millennia on the Earth Kingdom follows the path of fracture and reunification. Each time, discourse and disunity were exacerbated by incompetence fostered through the innate flaws of nepotism." Shan pointed his fan at the woefully unprepared student, preparing to test Satchiko's knowledge. "Now, recite from memory on what I have just explained in the last hour. What is the major structural problem that plagues the Earth Kingdom's provinces? What is it that cause the Earth Kingdom to be politically divided aside from its difficult geography?"
Satchiko gulped her mouth, mind feeling empty. This whole time she is trying to play catchups with Shan's overly complicated teaching of broad subjects. There was plenty of poems, historical records and cultural practices that is almost impossible to remember. It's always the details that unbalanced her thoughts. She was made to remember how a historic event can be tied to the values of a certain school of thought, or maybe how a school of thought is incepted by the occurrence of a particular moment in history. From her perspective, learning them all felt convoluted, extremely complex and hard to follow. Her mind almost hurts, and it would be more preferable to fight pirates on Kyoshi Island, at least the latter is an easier option.
"W-well, I..."
Satchiko could not find the words that might be useful. She does not know the answer. What is another factor that contributes to the Earth Kingdom's divide other than its geography? The girl thought long and hard, all the while enduring Shan's serious gaze. But her recollection has become nothing more but a vast expanse of unusable knowledge, all blended together horribly. The classes in the university did not cover this, and studying political science is the last thing she expects to encounter.
"Natural disasters and bandits!" Satchiko nervously blurted out. As a warrior, her intelligence is mostly dedicated to fighting. She knew this is not the answer he wanted, but it was the best respond a simpleminded person like her can devise.
"Structural problem," Shan reiterated. There was a slight hint of annoyance in his tone, which only made his new student even more pressured. The scholar in white robe paced around, awaiting a response more fitting to his caliber of teaching.
Satchiko thought about it again. As her mind battled to formulate an answer, Mayumi stood in the background behind Shan. The sight of her sister sweeping of the floor is rather...agonizing to say the least. If only she herself have worked harder. If she had known this is the cost of learning Earthbending, then she would rather not come here in the first place. Satchiko is both saddened and angered upon seeing this. Just what was her sister even thinking?
Shan slapped the board hard with his paper fan after noticing the distracted pupil. This immediately made Satchiko recoil, trying to refocus on the presenting question.
"Yuko," he said her fake name. She was afraid that her real identity might be compromised. "The minimal expectations I placed on you shall not be infringed. I suggest you remain fixated on compensating innate flaws rather than being occupied with trivial matters. If you can't even remember what I said earlier on the structural problems of the Earth Kingdom, then why are even studying in Ba Sing Se?
"But I-"
Satchiko wanted to protest, feeling inadequate after Shan's brutally honest assessment. She refrained from acting confrontational, as this scholar is no ordinary individual. Compared to all the learned men and women of Ba Sing Se, Shan stands at the very top, supposedly possessing great intellect. Being a student of the Zhuangyuan classed scholar is a privilege that even the wealthiest Upper Ring clans would envy. They would question why a random village girl managed to secure Shan's tutorage while their children were declined. Although from her perspective, she still does not know if this man named Shan have prior teaching experiences. but being here alone weighs heavily on her. While some may find it to be a great honor to study under a renown Zhuangyuan classed scholar. To a normal girl like her, it is paramount that such opportunity is not wasted. She has already been given too much in life. Which is why behaving like a spoiled child despite the world's suffering is pure asinine.
After contemplating for a while, Satchiko finally derived another answer. She may not be an experienced warrior who traversed across the continent on foot, but the difficult reality that many people face in the Earth Kingdom is obvious. Yet, she felt Shan's question was too broad.
"I-i don't know," Satchiko admitted. Of course, this is the answer, why would anyone expect her to know more? A warrior who trained to fight skirmishes knows too little of this world. "The only thing I can say is that there are bad people in many places, and also poor people that don't have much to eat."
She looked up, only to meet Shan's reserved but slightly disappointed expression. The scholar sighed lightly out of the nose, and then paced around while fanning himself.
"A simpleminded answer," he still retained a hint of harshness. "But it does not address a root cause for such predicament. If you were paying attention to what I explained, then it would not be hard to remember a prime reason why disunity is so prevalent across the Earth Kingdom."
Satchiko stared at the board filled with complicate syllables. It's all too confusing to her. She doesn't even know how to read most of the words. Just like the books, there are no pictures to assist her learning.
Not wishing to be viewed as a lazy or incompetent, she quickly asked about Shan's perspective, hoping by doing so it may position her as a woeful but diligent student. Although disgruntled by her lack of intelligence, Shan nonetheless explained one root cause that plagues the Earth Kingdom that affects it on a societal level.
"The Earth Kingdom is vast and diverse, resilient but stubborn. Just like the soil, it can be rich with fertile lands or dry like an uncrossable desert. Aside from the difficult geographic environment that greatly hinders the transmission of information, another consistent problem presents itself, one that is as old as the Earth Kingdom civilizations." Shan took a pause from his poetic description of the continent, and finally revealed his expertise of political science. Of all the nations, the Earth Kingdom is such a vast land that unity is hard to achieve. "The root to many problems can be found in the innate failing of humanity. In the case of the Earth Kingdom, its division can be traced to the existence of powerful family clans that lies inside and outside the walls. Mainly, the lands are polluted with the forever present patrimonialism. Regional aristocratic families are a social force that is ever dominant in every state which lacks direct control from the capital. The clans have their own interests that may not be compliant with its neighbors or the historical capital city of Ba Sing Se. It is no wonder that there was more than one King in this nation which was barely holding it together until breaking again in recent times. During eras when the central government cannot or lack the will to enact control over the provinces, nothing can stop these powerful families from becoming petty warlords, vying for power. Yet, they themselves may not have the sufficient power to counter daofei rebellions, famine or foreign invasions. The clans control their states, and the family is the one that owns them. In the present, the Earth Kingdom have once again fractured into petty warlords, hailed by the aristocratic families each with their own interests. The question people don't ask themselves is what stops these petty clans from enacting their own policies. If a ruler sees their domain as nothing more but a family affair, what is stopping them from appointing offices based on the archaic values of birthright rather than talent? If the Earth Kingdom is divided into countless independent states, what is stopping them from wagging war against one another without the banner that once united them? To sum up what I just said, patrimonialism across the continent is problem that have existed for thousands of years. It has enrooted itself into the values and culture of those who ruled and will be ruling. Regardless of how the naive King Wu and the Avatar have reformed the land, clan patrimonialism across the continent will always be here in one way or another. To believe that somehow the propagation of their ideals upon a very different people would work universally is not only childish, but also simply laughable." He closed his eyes in a manner of ponderance, lamenting on the development of the world. "Now that I think about it, it does indeed feel pathetic. Using the lives of millions upon millions, it was apish to allow the wheels of history to be controlled by an irresponsible infant and a clueless baboon who is not even from the Earth Kingdom."
Satchiko suddenly remembered one individual, the governor from the state of Yi. He acted with neglect towards the people, but such occurrence is not exclusive. She is aware from the words of Temujin that Liu Zhang, who is that neglectful governor ruling the state of Yi, has inherited the state. Now that she thought about it, birthright does not always produce competent individuals. Despite being a daughter of the chief and the best Kyoshi Warrior on the island, she knew from a young age that she will not inherit any titles. Due to Kyoshi Island's egalitarian environment, the position of a chief and the title of 'greatest warrior of this generation' are not based on hereditary, but rather, it is determined by the unsophisticated idea on 'who is better for this job'. They are a small village compared to the rest of the world, so these titles don't amount to any power anyway. Even her father's role as chief do not wield that much power besides keeping petty disputes in moderation, he is not even paid for being the chief...
But having someone who is competent for a role is certainly more beneficial than employing those with familial connections. Perhaps this is what Shan is trying to imply, to put it simply, powerful clans ruling their own domain is a great cause for the Earth Kingdom's problems and divide. Without unity, the clans pursued their own interests with neighboring states that are no longer considered their own people. Just like the once united Jian Sin and Siaw Jong, clashing interests turned them into enemies.
However, there is something she wanted to know but is afraid to ask.
"About the Earth Kingdom's divide, were the actions of King Wu and the last Avatar have resulted in the curr-"
Shan shot her a sharp gaze, and she instantly stopped talking.
"Do not learn how to run when you can't even walk," Shan remarked about Satchiko's unimpressive learning ability. "I suggest you memorize more of what I taught, inscribe them to your mind. Before you are even qualified in asking more questions, it is imperative for the pupil to master basic literacy." He is aware of her poor writing skills, believing that Satchiko must focus first on increasing her number of written words, or at the very least, make them readable.
"Yes," Satchiko answered with a dejected face. Unbeknownst to her, Mayumi noticed this too.
Shan put away the board and placed a bamboo scroll he was holding onto the stone table in the yard. He retrieved a small earth disc from the same table and returned back to the tree. She already spent hours trying to memorize Earth Kingdom philosophy and history, and now it is time for him to access Satchiko's Earthbending, or more specifically, the lack of it.
"I heard of your predicament, but a simple demonstration would be more suffice to understand where your failings lie." Shan said bluntly. He gently placed the small disc on the ground. It is light enough for it to be held with only one hand. In a real battle, Earthbenders prefer to use the environment, drawing massive chunks from the ground just for a single attack. It is therefore rather embarrassing for Satchiko to be unable to replicate it. For all her life, she fought like a non-bender, lived like a non-bender. She wondered if she can truly reach the level akin to what is average for Earthbending.
"Lift this disc," Shan plainly ordered.
"N-now?" Satchiko asked hesitantly. She does not feel ready. While such a suggestion may seem trivial to normal people, for her it is akin to asking the impossible.
"Is there a problem?" Shan narrowed both eyes.
"No, not at all." Satchiko lied straight through her teeth. She stared blankly at the small disc made of earth. It is nothing more but a training item, one she knew even the weakest Earthbenders can control. Shan fanned himself as the Kyoshi Warrior prepared. She tried to mimic the common stance demonstrated in class, a very rigid style that is difficult for someone who trained to use melee weapons such two metal fans.
At first, she moved her arms, picturing herself lifting that disc in the air. Once that failed, she then tried stomping the ground, aiming to somehow move it.
Shan watched as she tried for a few minutes. His gaze of disapproval is evident, a sign of disappointment. She is afraid that a scholar of this caliber may regret taking her as a personal student, and that is not including the concern that Shan might not even be an Earthbender in the first place.
"Halt. It's pointless for you to continue." Shan stated after growing impatient. Or perhaps he has foreseen the futility in Satchiko's feasible attempts.
"Sorry, but no matter how much I try, I never once managed to bend earth of that size." Satchiko explained, suppressing the feeling of shame. "The best I can do is a pebble." She almost made an audible hiss after blurting out the last statement, afraid that telling the truth might cause Shan to reconsider this teaching arrangement.
Shan inhaled and released a heavy sigh. He made no considerations for pleasantry and directly criticized her appalling Earthbending in a manner fitting of a gentleman scholar.
"I have seen children who are more capable Earthbenders," Shan coldly said.
Satchiko didn't even object, as it is undoubtable truth. In the Middle and Lower Rings, she can occasionally see juveniles using their bending, dynamically changing the ground to play their game of ball. While those children are no soldiers with potent force, their meagre demonstration of their gifts are far superior to Satchiko's pathetic state. If those much younger than her have achieved so much, than what does this say about the second daughter of Akahana? Clearly not favorable. Her bending is simply abysmal.
Shan approached the disc while retained his fanning. Everywhere he went, the scholar wields his iconic paper fan. "The art of moving earth cannot be easily learned, as it is a difficult substance, stubborn and unwilling to change." Almost instantly, he shot Satchiko a sharp gaze, also pointing with his closed fan. "I refuse to believe you cannot move this disc."
Apparently, Shan does not think Satchiko has a much weaker Earthbending than normal people. As a Kyoshi Warrior, she is entirely clueless on Earthbending's technicality. While it's unclear what rule the mainlanders used to define proficiency, she understands that no normal Earthbender would be as weak as herself.
Shan then picked up a small piece of pebble and placed it on the table. He directed Satchiko to levitate it from a distance, standing near the tree. The teen followed his orders but found it difficult to 'feel' the earth. Once again, a critical expression painted Shan's face. He relocated pebble closer to her on the grass, but it only wobbled slightly.
"At least I can be certain you were lucky enough to be born with bending," Shan confirmed his experiment, albeit with a harsh tone. Understandably, most at first would not recognize her as a bender. Even herself sometimes forgot about this, which is rather embarrassing.
Shan moved the piece of pebble again, this time right near Satchiko's foot. She tried to bend it upwards to her hand, but it barely left the ground. She tried again, but nothing happened. As sweat began to flow from her forehead, Shan ceased this activity, believing there is no point in continuing to try. At this moment, Satchiko began to doubt herself more. Even with one of the best scholars as her tutor, she might never even reach an acceptable level of mastering Earthbending. But informing Mayumi about such futile act is something she cannot bring herself to do. Perhaps there is still hope. Afterall, this is just the first lesson, albeit as a form of 'compensation' to her failures in the actual classroom.
Shan's rigid and serious mannerism is always present. This is the scholar's usual self, unchanging and stubborn just like an immovable mountain. His emotions were always kept under control whenever she felt he is becoming impatient. Logically, Satchiko's weak Earthbending is beyond laughable. If even small children can surpass her in this aspect, then how can Shan even begin teaching her? For a prestigious scholar who stood at the epitome of Ba Sing Se's education world, his reputation is at risk.
Yet, the scholar is constantly emotionally reserved. While he did showed harshness in his criticisms, every word felt like a planned script, not a single one was wasted.
Satchiko thought about it as Shan experimented on the Earthbending. Her sister already sacrificed so much just to create this opportunity. Despite the fact that both of them are unknowledgeable to Earthbending, Mayumi nonetheless wanted her to succeed, to reach the full potential of someone born with the ability. But at the same time, the mere idea of her sister working for another person greatly unsettles her. The fact that Mayumi is under the command of someone other than an older Kyoshi Warrior is ludicrous, completely unacceptable in Satchiko's standard. Why should a proud warrior use their strength just to labor?
She breathed deeply to calm down, reminding herself it is her fault in the first place. She cannot ignore their mother's wish to address this untapped potential, and it would childish if Satchiko squandered this learning opportunity in a childish manner. She wanted to succeed no matter what, and failure would be too difficult to bear.
"Perhaps the lack of experience and knowledge is the key problem," Shan claimed, somewhat determined to discover the root cause to this abnormally stunted Earthbending. "A deeper cultivation of your skills are needed, starting with your literacy." He held up a scroll of words written by Satchiko earlier, which was a minor test used to examine her handwriting. For the scholar who mastered calligraphy, poetry and especially an expert in Earth Kingdom political science, Shan cannot read many of Satchiko's written syllables. They are exceedingly ugly, empty gaps replaces words that are too hard to write. Worst of all, some of the syllables appear completely alien to the Ba Sing Se's writing system, confusing Shan to the greatest degree.
Of course, Satchiko accepted his critique, albeit difficult. She came to terms of the problems that needed to be addressed, ignoring them would be irresponsible in the long run. Regardless of whether or not she enjoys Shan's teaching methods, she at least has to try. As someone who has already been given so much in life compared to most peasants, the last thing she wanted is to devalue her sister's sacrifice and shatter the anticipation of her hopeful parents. Hard work should eventually yield some kind of result, she told herself.
"It is indeed peculiar that someone as old as you have yet to master basic Earthbending." Shan stated, putting down the scroll back on the stone table along with other study materials. He personally poured himself some tea and commented on what she should do from now on. "Outside from class, I want you to memories the content of the manual I have given to you. Your progress will be reassessed next week."
Satchiko gulped. The book in question is an instruction on Earthbending filled with only words. It belongs to Shan, and it is a complicated read, one that is not friendly to initial readers. As a scholar of high caliber, he may have been out of touch with the common people's literacy skills. And the mere act of memorizing an entire book in one week time is unreasonable to the average student. Someone like Shan can easily accomplish this, but not her.
"Y-yes, I will try my best..."
Satchiko's confidence plummeted tremendously, trying to imply that she will most likely not meet Shan's expectations. Even Mayumi in the background cannot help but feel how unreasonable it is to commit an entire book to memory all in one week. Shan the scholar is a talented individual, but he is a demanding tutor. But because he offered the service for free, with maybe a tiny bit of Mayumi's ploy, it would be dishonorable to complain his methods so early. Scholars are highly respected in Ba Sing Se, showing rudeness to one is also culturally unacceptable, especially to a Zhuangyuan ranked scholar.
Mayumi kept sweeping the floor, occasionally lifting some belongings that Shan wanted to be thrown out. This whole time she remained watchful to her sister's wellbeing, wondering if Shan's can successfully help Satchiko master Earthbending. The glaring problem would be that the White Scholar is likely not an Earthbender himself. But based on his behavior of testing Satchiko's ability, it is reasonable to believe he at least have more understanding to how it works. It is actually not impossible for non-benders to train others in the art of bending. History has shown that some of the strongest benders can master their gifts with the assistance of only non-bending instructors.
There isn't much option anyway. Shan is the best candidate so far; the tutor can also help with her sister's struggle to literacy subjects and also help guide the Earthbending. As Shan continued the lesson into historical events, Satchiko sat down on the grass, listening and attempting to copy what Shan said. Mayumi listened, detecting small hints of frustration seeping from Shan's patient tone. She can only hope nothing can obstruct this peace.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
The wooden doors banged loudly from the outside, almost startling two of the people in the yard.
Shan ignored the noise as both sisters instinctively turned their heads to the yard's two doors. Unlike the two Kyoshi Warrior who were trained to identity potential threats, the reserved minded scholar continues to teach as if nothing has happened. He even reprimanded Satchiko for once again losing focus, causing the youngster to quickly return her eyes to the book.
"It is not your role to be concerned about matters outside your station," Shan said to Satchiko, imploring that a basic tenant of being a student is to not allow distractions to hinder their progress. His phrase is also an indication, clearance for Mayumi to receive whoever is knocking. "Please inform whoever is outside that yours truly is unavailable for guests at this current moment." He is determined to not allow this lesson to be disturbed. For a man who staunchly values education, he wants nothing to interfere with the next part of the lesson.
As Shan starts explains the causes and consequences of noble opulence that is associated with a dynasty's decline, Mayumi headed for the doors. She carefully approaches, cautiously putting a hand on the handle. She sensed multiple people outside, likely armored due to the sound of clanking metal.
Her trainings cannot fail in broad daylight. She is worried, the dangerous escapade last night is already enough to fear for the safety of herself and Satchiko. Did the cultists discover their location? Or have the Dai Li ordered guards to arrest them both? Who are behind the doors in front of her?
There is not much time to carefully ponder. She doesn't have her weapons, most were confiscated by the Dai Li. The cultists may be fanatical, overriding their ability to reason with their blind faith in their 'master'. But it is unlikely they would be stupid enough to expose themselves in this manner, especially in the Upper Ring where it is more difficult to hide without sprawling buildings. If it was the city's guardsmen, they are likely here to arrest them. In either cases, Mayumi and Satchiko can always rely on their Kyoshi Warrior trainings, escape by jumping over the residential walls.
She reluctantly touched the handle, cautiously opened one door and peaked through. There stood a person who is likely a soldier. He is not a member of the Bingmayong, and definitely not one of those Royal Earthbender guards wearing brigandine armor. What he wore follows a similar design that is largely universal to most Earth Kingdom soldiers, with an armored conical helmet and uniform similar to militaries of many regions such as Jian Sin and Siaw Jong. Ignoring the slightly different shade of malachite green, he appears largely similar to the normal Ba Sing Se soldier.
But what Mayumi noticed immediately is the purple plum flower symbol painted obviously on the chest area. To her memory, the vast majority of Ba Sing Se soldiers would have a coin symbol on their uniform. After working in Jin's restaurant for a considerable amount of time, she is familiar to the many different regiments, with the only exception being the Bingmayong always wearing their more unique cord and plaque armor. But this soldier is completely new to her eyes. She does not recognize this infantryman's uniform nor that plum flower symbol at all. Is this some sort of elite unit like the Terra Team?
"Hey! Open the door!" The guard demanded.
Mayumi did not appear weak, seeking to understand his intention. "Who are you?" She asked.
"Don't play stupid!" The guard bellowed rudely. "If your eyes are not blind, you would know that this procession is associated with the Ximen clan! Now open the door up so that we may enter!"
This guard is bold. Unlike the occasionally tired and exhausted troops in Jin's eatery, this man is more energetic, clearly possessing an air of minor nobility.
Mayumi quickly scanned the area outside Shan's home. There is a dozen of guards wearing the same uniform, donning the design of the purple plum flower. Armed with dao swords, they guarded a beautifully ornated sedan carried by eight servants. Due to the excessive and heavy decorations of plum flowers made from pure heavy gold, the servants appear very tired. Some of them are on the verge of collapse, merely standing up due to the guard's supervision. It would be more practical if that thing is pulled by ostrich-horses, Mayumi thought. As someone who pretends to be from the Lower Ring, it was weird for her to not recognize the symbol of the Ximen family. She quickly inquired who is inside that sedan, believing it is not the delinquent Ximen Qing himself.
"Our esteemed lady, Jin Lian, will not tolerate your disrespect," the leading guard warned. "She came to grace Shan with her otherworldly presence, coming on behalf of our young master."
"Forgive my uncultured bluntness, but who is Lady Jin Lian?" Mayumi asked without consideration. She immediately noticed the shocked expression on the guardsman's face, astounded that their lady's name did not incite respectable reaction.
Mayumi truly does not know that name. She heard Ximen Qing is an infamous womanizer who is an eyesore in high society Ba Sing Se. He shamelessly proved this point during the Keju ceremony by his questionable public conduct. But because of his birthright as the heir to the city's most powerful clan, he can easily avoid repercussions so long as he plays the cards correct. Being well-versed and educated also meant it's easier to avoid real punishments. It's possible that the woman inside that sedan carriage is Ximen Qing's close associate. Maybe his latest one.
"Lower the carriage!" One the guards ordered the servants to rest the heavy sedan on the pavement path. Their whole entourage blocked the path, luckily this area is a quiet place with very few passing by. Still, it is rather unlawful for this small procession to take up the whole street. A normal sized carriage would have been fine and unobstructive.
The servants are already tired, almost dropping the sedan with too much eagerness. After finally releasing themselves, two of them collapsed to the ground, fainting due to overexerting their strength.
Mayumi opened the siheyuan's door wider and marched out to greet this uninvited guest. She walked cautiously, trying not to appear like a threat as she passed the wary guards. She has never seen this type of guards before. Unlike the normal one, these men adapted an unusually stern look. But it's clear they are not to be trifled with. From one observation at their posture and facial expression, Mayumi deduced they must be some form of elite unit associated with the Ximen clan. Displaying the symbol of purple plum flower proudly on their chest plates, these non-bending guards are possibly slightly better than the average guardsmen. Noticeably, their uniform appears to be made of high-quality silk along with swords that are better crafted than the average soldier. Knowing that the Ximen clan is immensely wealthy, they can afford to dress their warriors with equipment of the finest quality.
Yet one thought still lingers. She has never seen this type of troops at the Lower Ring where a battle with daofei armies is likely to take place. Even the Royal Earthbender Guards with their expensive brigandine armor can be often seen patrolling the giant walls, operating gates and manning its defenses.
Upon arriving to the sedan's entrance, Mayumi stood close to the door. There is a thin silhouette visible through the window veils. As a guard opened up the door, a woman emerged, very slowly climbing out of the large sedan.
There is no short of extravagance here. As a daughter of two very important people on the island, she can sense that this is some form of surprise visit, where the other party aims to secure a certain benefit. In past examples, fishermen have visited their home, trying to attain the chief's favor in petty disputes. What is happening now could be similar, but this is no ordinary visit. The Ximen clan is the most prominent noble family of the Upper Ring, with its current patriarch serving as Ba Sing Se's admiral and a member of the Council of Five. There is simply no shortage of prestige when it comes to that family, as their ancestor have served the reigning monarch of that time diligently, becoming famed heroes and were awarded unprecedented privileges that is still affecting the present.
The first that came out is Jin Lian's shoes, which are ornated in golden threads and fine silk. The guest moved very slowly like a gentle petal, acting soft and delicate. However, Mayumi is astounded by how small the shoes are. They are disproportionally tiny compared to the larger legs that came out next. She recognized it as the dying custom of foot binding, an outdated beauty standard that calls for girls to bind their feet and crush them into lotus shape. Supposedly that broadens a woman's marriage prospect, and parents who endorses this archaic practice encourages their daughters to literally destroy their foot just to find a reliable benefactor, a lifelong one in their mind. Even without literally placing herself in the shoes of this visitor, Mayumi felt the pain last night by the form of the Dai Li's frightening rock gloves. With each step down the carriage stair, she cannot help but suppress her own grimace, knowing each step this lady took is likely excruciating painful.
"Nitwits, move!" A guard barked at the sedan carriers. The servants moved hastily, catching their as they arrived near the door. Mayumi watched with intrigue and dumbstruck as these men landed on all fours, using their bare bodies to create a stair, spine facing the sky while allowing their noble lady to step on. Judging by unchanging reaction from the guards, this is clearly not the first time. She wanted to help these poor folks, but refrained, knowing it may create friction with these guards and the Ximen clan representative.
Just who is this woman named Jin Lian? Mayumi watched closely. The guest is taking her time, one foot gently tapped a servant's back, but also recoiled a bit as if the small shoe contacted something very painful. But gradually, the woman revealed herself. Jin Lian used the servant's body as steps to head down from the sedan. It's possible the flesh of these servants is more tolerable to her crushed foot; the key lies in the softness of those bodies.
"You are quite brave, or maybe you are just too foolish," Jin Lian harshly commented, using an uncomfortable high-pitched voice that even women would find weird. She belittled Mayumi for failing to recognize a member of the Ximen clan.
Mayumi wondered when will this noble lady step off the stair made of humans. Jin Lian is stilling standing on the back of a servant. How long can his body endure?
"Sorry for my rudeness," Mayumi bowed, formally apologizing to deescalate the situation. "We did not know honored visitors would greet our doors. Please, overlook my failings."
The last thing she needs now is to become enemies of Ba Sing Se's most powerful noble clan. She already has the Acolytes of San Bao and the Dai Li to worry about, anymore foes would be too much. Yet, this initial interaction has already felt vastly different from her encounter with Lady Te Gaogui.
"I would like to apologize. Shan is currently unavailable. He requests to reconvene at a different time." Mayumi explained briefly, hoping the Ximen delegation would accept this and leave.
"Oh?" Jin Lian's mouth curved slightly, seemingly amused. "Is that bookworm sick and bedridden?"
"No," Mayumi said. "But he did say that-"
"If he is not sick, then why should I leave?" Jin Lian asserted, believing that Shan should personally become available in the face of the Ximen clan.
The woman named Jin Lian wore a strange pinkish outfit that does not conform with usual standards. It's a silk robe with parts of it only scantly cladding the body, intentionally showing what is voluptuous, either on the request of her benefactor or motivated by personal vanity. She carried an air of glamorous, slim waist accompanied with large eyes. The fiery red lips would have been more tolerable if it wasn't for that inconvenient blemishing black mole near the side of the nose.
Mayumi remembered that during the Keju ceremony, there was a lovestruck woman clinging to Ximen Qing's arm as he marched into the throne room. In the eyes of the public, it is not a pleasing sight as such casualness is disrespectful to the attendees. From her perspective Jin Lian may be in a close relationship with the Ximen's heir, naturally elevating her own power too. Being associated with Ba Sing Se's most prestigious clan itself holds weight.
"And who may you be?" Jin Lian asked with genuine interest. "Are you, his plaything?"
"Just a humble servant," Mayumi said without much expression. In her thoughts, she wondered how many years the local folks have here tolerated the Ximen clan's behavior. If it wasn't for the bodyguards surrounding this sedan, Jin Lian would have been heavily disciplined by the Kyoshi Warrior.
Jin Lian is still standing on the back of someone else, looking down at Mayumi from that height. There is clearly an astounding beauty blessed upon this woman. While her complex may not be as naturally ravishing as the intelligent Te Gaogui, she is nonetheless attractive enough to allure the heir of the most prominent Ba Sing Se clan. Yet, there is also something very beguiling about that feels repulsive. Besides the inappropriate dress, Jin Lian's rudeness immediately gave Mayumi a bad impression. Being associated with the lecherous Ximen Qing, she too held no consideration to those around her. What does this 'esteemed lady' possess besides her face? The reason why Lady Te Gaogui earned the respect of many is because of her hardworking nature and intelligence, inspiring many people with attributes that is unrelated to beauty. But for Jin Lian, the woman's behavior made even an outsider like Mayumi feel vexed, akin to the annoyance of dealing with a spoiled and irresponsible child.
"M-m l-lady, p-lease, I-i can't hold on a-anymore!"
Jin Lian paid no heed to the servant's plea. The Kyoshi Warrior can sympathize his struggle, who despite serving as a human step, must also now endure the full weight of Jin Lian on his spine.
"Hmm," Jin Lian eyed Mayumi. She scanned the pitiful green robe, clearly amused by the patches and damaged parts. "It seems that the peasant has overspent."
The woman is likely referring to Shan rather than Mayumi. In a place surrounded by extravagance, even the lowliest servants would be donned decently as to not embarrass their employers. It's almost rare to see people dressed like this in the Upper Ring, as Mayumi only performed makeshift repairs to her dress.
"To think that a lowborn runt managed to climb so high up, oh well, at the end of the day, he still one of their kind," Jin Lian gently stepped off the human stair, trying to plant her shoe on the ground as light as possible. Mayumi didn't say anything. If there even the faintest sign of disagreement or rebuke, it may draw trouble for them in the future. They already have been embroiled into so many inconveniences after offending the Yi governor. Displeasing the Ximen clan would only incur unimaginable problems. Since Jin Lian insists on meeting Shan, then it is now his problem to deal with.
It's one thing to use force to exert one's will, but it's another to face the consequences. Youthful and arrogant brutes that rely solely on their brawn over their brain will never possess wise foresight. Sometimes, it's not hard to just think and avoid making decisions that could endanger the whole world.
Continuing to perform her role, Mayumi lead this 'distinguished' lady into the siheyuan courtyard. She is nervous, knowing Satchiko is still studying. The sudden arrival from a noble delegation could disrupt the lesson and might even embroil her sister into the mess that is the aristocratic intrigue. Delicate situations like this have no use for fighters, but it does demand the intricate knowledge of those well-versed in the world of political intrigue widely practiced by the aristocracy.
In many societies, its most elite members would never lower themselves to the level of commoners. Even when hurling insults at the other party, the use of subtlety and ill-intended phase discussed as flattery are amongst the usual tactics, aiming to imitate what might be considered 'cultured'.
To Mayumi, these types of languages are complex, but can be just as poisonous if not more. Words said aloud can always harm, not matter how much it is galvanized as an elaborate bout. Which is why she grow concerned, afraid that her sister might be provoked and fight them physically. But judging by Shan's maneuverability during the Keju ceremony, his expertise and title as a Zhuangyuan scholar is enough to stave off any foul-mouthed attempts from this Jin Lian. As much as she disdains some of his views, there is no doubt Shan has spent a considerable amount of time familiarizing how nobles behave. While a deadly warrior like herself might not be useful in the world of court intrigue, a harmless scholar like Shan will absolutely bestride by using speech alone.
"This way Lady Jin Lian," Mayumi sounded formally, walking up the stone stair leading to the courtyard entrance. It is imperative not to act too confrontational lest she want the house of Ximen to become her enemy. "Shan is teaching a student, but I'm sure he would not mind your visit."
Of course, he will! Mayumi screamed in her mind. But there is no point of complaining as it is Shan's responsibility now.
She passed the doorway and stepped back into the courtyard. But as she heard no footsteps trailing from behind, Mayumi turned around, noticing that the extravagant woman named Jin Lian has not been following close. The lady in scantly cladded dress have found difficulty in climbing the stairs, yelping with each time her tiny, crushed feet contacts solid ground.
The Kyoshi Warrior watched with interest, but also can't help but pity this woman's struggle. She knew the practice of foot binding occurs for girls at a very young age, the vast majority being forced by parents who held on to outdated beauty standards of the past.
Jin Lian's face constricted uncomfortably, hissing as the flesh in her feet stretches and pulled. Even the slightness maneuvers might tear a muscle. Mayumi extended her hand to help but was outright refused. It seems that this noble lady doesn't even want commoners to touch her.
"Guards, bring me a lift!" Jin Lian scathed, panting by the 'impassable' stone stair. What Mayumi accomplished with ease, climbing the stair is an impossible challenge for this noblewoman.
Two men brought forth a wooden chair which has rope tied to the back of the servant. Jin Lian sat on it, and the unfortunate fellow has to carry the woman on his back and try not to stumble under that weight. They arrived at the courtyard; guards positioned themselves on all directions as Jin Lian made her underwhelming entrance.
Mayumi stood on the side as Shan continued to teach. Despite obviously aware of these uninvited guests, the White Scholar maintained his lack of outward emotions, preferring to explain another concept a Satchiko who can no longer ignore the new arrivals.
"Now Yuko, explain to me the basics of Neutral Jing and how it is applied to an Earthbender's thought process." Shan asked.
"Uhm, Shan?" Satchiko awkwardly asked. "These people...don't you want to stop the lesson and talk with them first?"
The scholar shot her a sharp gaze, apparently displeased with such a statement. Shan have likely spent years climbing the world of education. As a man who was granted the title of Zhuangyuan, he no doubt places heavy value on education. Even the slightest form of hinderance is viewed with malice.
"The esteemed Lady Jin Lian have graced your presence, White Scholar, why are you not demonstrating respect through prostration?" The leading guardsman's statement was outright ignored, immediately drawing the wrath of Jin Lian, whose temper knows little limit.
Before she can unleash her petty fury, the servant carried her to the yard's stone table. Jin Lian sat on one of its chairs. Even the simple process of sitting is difficult for those with their crushed feet.
"So, the rumors are true!" Jin Lian narrowed her eyes. She pointed her long nails at Shan, who is still teaching Satchiko the more in-depth knowledge of Neutral Jing. "The White Scholar might be intelligent, but he does not understand gratitude. Our young master has graciously given you a gift, yet you do not reciprocate by showing respect to young master Ximen Qing's close confidant." Jin Lian looked around. "Which is me, understand?"
Mayumi analyzed this attempt at insulting Shan. It was not subtle enough, she thought. A common practice for highly cultured aristocrats is to duel with their learned vocabulary. Jin Lian's statement felt too blunt, akin to ordinary peasants ranting about trivial matters. But since Jin Lian has a powerful Ximen Qing as her benefactor, it is nonetheless a great boost in confidence. No matter how foolish she may behave, the name of the Ximen household itself can always relive her troubles.
Shan finally responded. He temporarily halted the lesson, fanning himself. But for a host to initially ignore a guest is part of Earth Kingdom's culture. "I will show respect to Ximen Qing's confidant, but I don't see one here."
As expected, Jin Lian did not take this remark kindly. As the 'significant other' of the wealthy clan heir Ximen Qing, almost no one would defy her. Perhaps Shan thought he needs to reply in a more obvious manner, catering to this person's less sophisticated mind.
"White Scholar!" The leading guardsman ordered. "While you may have acted rashly during the Keju ceremony, we nonetheless respect your status as a learned man. It is therefore acceptable behavior to act in accordance with the morals of a decent host. It is proper manner to give Lady Jin Lian, an upright citizen and reputable woman of the Ximen clan, the respect she deserves."
Jin Lian grinned with content, believing these armed men are enough to force Shan to demonstrate courtesy. Even if this scholar is known to be rude to nobles during the Keju ceremony, against actual guards, what can a defenseless gentleman do?
"I agree," Shan surprised them all with a rare instance of agreeableness. "Perhaps we should all skip the pleasantries and have some tea."
Mayumi observed closely. Shan's calm and lack of outwardly emotions actually made Jin Lian and her entourage be on guard. Their faces depict looks of uncertainty, like soldiers hesitant to declare victory after winning a battle.
The scholar asked Satchiko to return home, declaring the lesson ended after a certain group of people invaded his home. The young girl obligated, feeling relieved from the difficult learning and the presence of these newcomers.
The two sisters gave each other an understanding look. Mayumi, who is still standing close by, is glad that her sister does not have to sit through this. While they are both children of a chief, it's clear the world of aristocracy and its pettiness does not fit them. As simple individuals from humble origins, they found no purpose in trying to entertain these arrogant nobles who brags about titles and wealth. Now that Satchiko is gone, they can handle these surprise visitors without too much worry.
"Takeko, please fetch some tea from the kitchen kettle for our guest." Shan requested in a show of good mannerism. No matter how much disdain he has towards the 'nepotists', a scholar like him must still uphold moral codes espoused by traditional values. At least to a certain degree.
Mayumi returned with porcelain cups and a teapot filled with tea. There wasn't a specific request on what tea she uses. But since the Ximen family is the most prominent family in Ba Sing Se, she chose to prepare a brew using some fine White Dragon Bush, confident it will appease Jin Lian's problematic personality. While exceedingly beautiful, this female 'associate' of Ximen Qing do not act with cordiality, especially to those with inferior background. Which is why using the legendary tea might create a favorable impression in this noble lady's mind, and hopefully avoid conflict to herself and Satchiko.
She gently sat the tray on the stone table, arranging cups for the two important people, trying to ignore the judging gaze from Jin Lian staring at her damaged dress. However, the presence of Jin Lian has certainly induced a new form of pressure. Mayumi became more cautious in how she acts, reigning in control upon every fiber, ensuring nothing can create animosity with this noble household. If her sister is also watching, it would be a good opportunity to learn perhaps tolerating unpleasant people is pragmatically better than offending petty aristocrats. It is prudent to not cause trouble for their future, not anymore at least.
After finishing arranging the tea set, she decided to head back to the side of the courtyard. But a demeaning voice halted her.
"Servant," Jin Lian called out darkly. Mayumi's back felt the sharp disapproving gaze. If she were to fight them all directly, she can no doubt win. But not in the circumstance of incurring a feud.
"Yes?" Mayumi calmly asked after turning around. When she thought about working for Shan, scenarios like this are completely unpreparable.
"The tea, you have yet to pour it." Jin Lian squinted her eyes, lampooning Mayumi's 'lack of consideration'. This slight insignificant act has drawn the ire of this noble lady. Despite all of Mayumi's best efforts, it was still futile.
Across the table, Shan has already filled his cup with the brew. The norm of working here is that the scholar never allows Mayumi to pour tea for him. Whether he considered it too trivial or simply afraid that someone may poison the brew, such habit made her felt there is no longer a need. Yet, people like scholar Shan and the poet Seonbi are one of the few exceptions. Mayumi have totally forgotten that most aristocrats don't wish to lift a single finger, even if the task is insignificant.
"Sorry," Mayumi appeased. It felt like speaking to a child in an adult's body. Jin Lian is no Te Gaogui. This visitor from the Ximen clan can freely act spoiled and disrespectful, so long as her actions do not directly oppose the state.
Her hands reach for the teapot, Shan stopped Mayumi, much to her surprise too.
"The passing of the four seasons is a strong indication of a person's nature." Shan remarked while savoring every drop of the brew. He put down the empty teacup, staring right at Jin Lian. This also drawn the ire of the visitor. "Someone as capable as Lady Jin Lian should demonstrate virtues and behave proactively in courtly manners."
Shan's statement is a subtle suggestion for Jin Lian to personally pour her own tea. But it is also a critique disguised as friendly comments, implying that someone like this noble lady is not worthy enough to have someone else pour her a cup of tea. All citizens from lower rank, either if it's familial or professional, must pour tea to those they deem superior. In this case, the Zhuangyuan did not see this noble lady to be worthy of this honor.
"Huh? So, you are suggesting my status as young master Ximen Qing's confidant is not dignified enough?" Jin Lian growled, disdained at Shan's behavior. But her sharp tongue is not idle either. "For someone who doesn't even know how to teach their household drudge basic manners, you dare lecture me?" She sounded incredulous. Mayumi doubt this woman could act so boldly without the presence of her guards.
Shan did not retort with emotions or outbursts. He's expression is just like normal. Calm, serious and lack of emotions generally. He poured himself another cup of tea, indulging in the warmness, tasting every bit of the White Dragon Flower Bush tea and allowing the steam to flow pass through his nostril.
After emptying the second cup of tea, he spoke. "Well, if the decorum Lady Jin Lian saw fault in yours truly, then perhaps espousing some rectitude from your part would be much more constructive."
Obviously, the scholar does not seriously believe someone like Jin Lian is qualified to be an upright individual. Mayumi have heard plenty about Ximen Qing, that young heir to the most powerful clan in the Upper Ring. The most defining feature of that wealthy delinquent would be his lust, a trait that would continuously be infamous, drawing the disgust and ire of essentially every citizen. It is commonly known that he has been married multiple times before, all of which resulted in the women being abandoned eventually. His current main lover, most likely is Jin Lian, was also married to someone else, but her last husband died due to mysterious causes.
If there is one recurring trait of the White Scholar that Mayumi can notice, it would be his utter dislike for most nobles. Those born into their fortune without lifting a single finger are likely the main targets for Shan's harshness. It is possible that the reason why he is even receiving Jin Lian as a guest was done out of formality, aiming to not offend the Ximen Qing clan outright. At least not now. While Shan is indeed a Zhuangyuan destined to become a very high-ranking scholar official, bad blood with the most powerful clan might hinder his ambition. Most scholar-officials serving in Ba Sing Se's bureaucracy would wish to remain friendly with power clans in the Upper Ring, as many officials also hail from noble backgrounds.
"Hmph, as if I would lower myself to the level of a street runt who lacks elegance," Jin Lian eyed Mayumi with a prideful look, and then back to Shan. Mayumi's inconvenient presence during the Keju ceremony has certainly created rumors, grotesque ones. The simple act of Shan lending her an umbrella is all it took to be misinterpreted as the Zhuangyuan disregarding all the noble ladies in the Upper Ring. But as unlikable as Lady Jin Lian may be, she at least retained some level of intelligence to understand that using such unconfirmed rumors against Shan is also disparaging herself. After all, Ximen Qing's adulterous behavior is known far and wide, even his current 'confidant' is not ignorant to this. Jin Lian would not make the obvious mistake of painting herself as a hypocrite, who have likely earned Ximen Qing's affection through unsightly means.
"I suppose it would be sufficed to proceed on what you are verry here for," Shan stated, believing it is time to address Jin Lian's goal. This surprise visit could indicate many things but is likely tied to the Ximen clan's interest.
Jin Lian ordered one of her servants to pour the tea. Not even bothered to drink it afterwards. She proudly declared her intentions but compared to all the other members of Upper Ring aristocracy, being subtle is certainly lacking.
"You should consider yourself lucky Shan," Jin Lian said in a patronizing manner, an act picked up by both the scholar and Mayumi. "The Ximen family are in need of capable individuals to serve our future patriarch. Since you are decent enough for this role, I have personally decided to come to this...place and receive your acceptance."
It's clear that Jin Lian looks down on Shan to a certain degree. Even his home, this ordinary siheyuan courtyard house is to her distaste. But it cannot be understated how important a Zhuangyuan is to Ba Sing Se, as they can potentially become some of the most high-ranking scholar-officials working in the upper echelon. Therefore, securing their allegiance can tremendously benefit a clan, either through bribery or strategic political marriages.
However, there is not much venue to force a Zhuangyuan scholar to directly serve a clan. Especially someone like Shan, who endorses a strict meritocratic and legalistic philosophy that has historically been a bane to nobles. A patrimonial clan can indeed shower these talented individuals with wealth, socially coercing them to reciprocate such 'kindness'. But since Shan couldn't very care less about the asinine game played by these aristocrats, no matter how much expensive gift he receives, none shall sway him. The Ximen family only sent him an antique clock, expensive but not enough to swear allegiance to them. It seems that Ximen Qing's partner is now more proactive, preferring to directly secure Shan's allegiance to the Ximen clan. While others used flattery and gifts in an attempt to incentivize the Zhuangyuan, Jin Lian doesn't seem to be aware that her rudeness will only incur resentments. When it comes to playing the game of clan politics, Jin Lian is clueless, not realizing humans dislike being looked down upon. Even a village girl like Mayumi can notice how childish it is. Did this woman seriously believe that a surprise visit and some patronizing words are enough to secure Shan's allegiance to the Ximen family?
"What qualities did the Ximen family saw in me?" Shan asked while refilling his tea, eyes not even focused on the rude guest. "Perhaps you may list a few of my qualifications and assess them to see if they are up to your standards."
"It's not my standards, you bookworm," Jin Lian clarified, slightly impatient that Shan still has not decided to align with the Ximen clan. "It is simply the foresight of my dear beloved!" She referred to Ximen Qing in a lovestruck mood, obsessing over the young heir of the clan, that notorious delinquent.
Mayumi isn't sure if Jin Lian's action is approved by the clan or not. It's possible they did not expect this woman to independently venture off and try to force Shan into their allegiance. But Jin Lian's response to the scholar's questioning woefully revealed that it is Ximen Qing's personal idea to goal to secure his service. For any clan that seeks to sponsor a scholar, the learned individual in return must yield benefits in the form of their crafts. It could be as trivial as being a scribe or acting as a tutor to the clan's young children. In more ambitious manners, it could be an indication that the clan aims influence the city's politics in favor of this specific patrimonial group. Either way, Jin Lian has not revealed what the Ximen family specifically want to achieve. Shan's capability as a renowned scholar has few equals, previous Zhuangyuan scholars are already serving in the government, too busy to create art, poems and calligraphy for patrons. Whatever the Ximen clan wants with his service is definitely great enough to warrant Ximen Qing's personal ambitions.
"So, Shan the White Scholar, will you accept the offer to put your meagre qualifications in good use, and diligently serve the honorable Ximen family? The likes of you should value this once in a lifetime opportunity." Jin Lian made a smug smile, thinking that she is an expert in negotiations while providing no tangible incentives other than to serve Ba Sing Se's most powerful clan. Both Shan and Mayumi can just smell the reeking cluelessness from this woman. Her face and body are beautiful, voluptuous much to Ximen Qing's liking. But she is rather childish, laughing while in a celebratory mood while Shan made no indication to align with the Ximen family.
Shan emptied his cup. Instead of giving Jin Lian a quick reply, he intentionally delayed it, preferring to refill the teapot with more delicious brew from the White Dragon Bush. The guest also noticed this apparent sign of disrespect, believing that Shan is not cherishing this incredible 'opportunity'. Once Mayumi returned with another teapot of the brew, Shan again poured his own cup of tea.
"My meagre qualifications as a scholar could be tested first before considering working for the Ximen clan," Shan suggested. "Takeko, please bring that unfinished poem on desk. I hope it can be reviewed by the very capable Lady Jin Lian "
"You sure?" Mayumi asked, trying to decipher what he is planning. Other than the woman herself, everyone knows Shan does not view Jin Lian as an intellectual equal. But for one scholar to truthfully ask another to access their works, the other party must be at least somewhat competent. Perhaps Shan only saw the Fire Nation poet, Seonbi, as one of the few rare people that can actually offer an intellectual challenge. Which is why Mayumi highly doubt he is serious about Jin Lian reviewing his poetry.
As Mayumi returned with the unfinished poem, she held the parchment wide, allowing Jin Lian to get a good look.
"It's good," Jin Lian answered without interest.
Shan squinted his eyes, clearly displeased by this lackluster response.
"What part of it?" He lightly challenged while consuming another cup of tea. "As an outsider married into the Ximen clan, do you not take the affairs of the household seriously? Is amassing talented individuals not as important as your daily indulgences?"
Jin Lian is slightly angered. But maintained her composure. "You are bold, scholar. You shouldn't interpret my lack of words as a sign of indolent. My acknowledgment of your poem should be more than enough to motivate you to serve the Ximen clan. You should be lucky that my beloved is even hiring those with lesser intellect."
Mayumi is internally wincing at Jin Lian's behavior. Is this representative of the Ximen clan so terrible at negotiating that she didn't even try to demonstrate at least some resemblance of reasoning? The refusal to even look at Shan's poem could be interpreted as either she cannot understand it, or Jin Lian is just indifferent. Either way, by casually stating that Shan is inferior to Ximen Qing completely ignores the fact that the former scored higher during the Keju exam, clearly placing the White Scholar as more intellectually important than the spoiled noble heir. Was Jin Lian even paying attention during the Keju ceremony?
"Perhaps you can recite what I have written and see if my writing is good enough for your husband's definition of a great scholar. I am sure you understand that the Ximen family would not be delighted by your lack of appreciation in a scholar's work." Shan directly challenged, leaving no room for Jin Lian to maneuver. This can be considered as his 'counterattack' to Jin Lian's effort to monopolize his service. It forces the visitor to read the poem or else it might be interpreted as Jin Lian being too casual when trying to scout individuals to work for the clan.
Jin Lian looked at the parchment, almost with a fierce intensity. Mayumi even felt uncomfortable as she has to hold the parchment near that voluptuous woman.
"So?" Shan said while pouring what might be his fifth cup of tea. It is delicious, as the famed White Dragon Bush can create tea that is akin to a flawless paradise. It is actually more surprising that Shan is able to remain emotionally reserved after tasting this legendary brew. Most would be too overwhelmed by the tea's legendary taste. "What are you waiting for? Read." He said, almost making it sound like an order.
Mayumi also waited patiently. She scanned the first line of the poem; every syllable is simple, followed by more complicated ones in the middle of the page. To her knowledge, this poem is requested by a very influential member of the Upper Ring, one that Shan has to work on to facilitate a union between two patrimonial groups.
Unable to endure Jin Lian's predicament, the lead guard arrived near the table.
"It is dishonorable to demand our esteemed lady to lower herself in such a manner," he said, hand dangerously close to the sheathed sword. "To suddenly ask her to critique your poem is impoli-"
"You find my request unreasonable?" Shan calmly interjected. With his serious and emotionally reserved face, the scholar stared at the guard, making the latter slightly intimidated. The towering man forgot that a gentleman who wields a pen can do very little harm. "It is common for scholars to critique and criticize each other, especially their written works. The refusal by your esteemed lady would either be her negligence in fulling her duty to the clan, or perhaps she is, dare I say, illiterate." Shan looked at Jin Lian, almost with a pity. "Anyone who can read or write can at the very least say something about what I wrote."
"How dare you slander her name!" The guard yelled.
But this outburst didn't even make Shan flinch. The scholar calmly picked up his teacup and indulge in the beverage, nonchalant to the rising tension.
"Instead of being grateful that the Ximen clan is interested in offering you wealth and riches, you have disrespected its representative."
Shan emptied his cup, again. After putting the lid on, he looked at the guard and Jin Lian.
"I am giving her the respect, more than she actually deserves, if she doesn't even know how to read or write, why should I view her as my superior?" Shan stated bluntly, much to the surprise of the guests. No one, not even some of the most wealthy and influential aristocrats would dare say such things, and in such a blatant manner too. The guards in the background are also in shock by this unprecedented act towards the Ximen clan, minor to the common eye, but it is a huge transgression in the world of intrigue.
"Takeko, please, another refill," Shan requested. To friend or foe, he mostly maintained that rigidly serious demeanor, all the while not allowing his emotions to show at all. Even when delivering an insult, it would be swift and precise, like a sharp blade thrust right at the heart.
Noticeably, Jin Lian did not kindly accept Shan's gentlemanlike rudeness. She stood up from the chair, ignoring the foot pain and glared with malice.
"What did you ever accomplished besides writing and reading?" She challenged, sharp nails clawing the stone table. "Don't you behave so arrogant, little boy, for I will have you know, undermine me is to show contempt to the Ximen family. Are you so drunk on pride that you are willing to ensnare the honor of those who serve the throne dutifully?"
The Ximen clan's founder was a famed general who helped one of the previous Earth King at a dire time, bringing countless victory to Ba Sing Se. To reward such loyalty, the monarchy granted the Ximen family many privileges, from legal benefits and a large fief in the Lower Ring for tax collection. To this day, descendants of the original Ximen founder still hold such privileges. As such practices of reward is inscribed in the law, the Ximen family have grown to become the most influential in this city, and no one would defy them openly, at least not those without a great potential.
"A spoiled youth who indulges in luxury is inferior to those who toil the field to fill our granaries," Shan said to Jin Lian. He then turned to the guard with purple plum symbol. "And a professional soldier who never march to battle is weaker than battle-hardened conscript. I simply maintained my role as scholar, not exceeding my office unless my capability demands it."
Mayumi heard it after returning with another tray of tea. The look of the guard's face suggests these soldiers with a plum flower symbol are not active in fighting the bandits. It also revealed Shan's further disdain for Jin Lian, the lover of Ximen Qing. This was a ploy against what they wish to be perceived, to insult their honor and place in the world. While the guard maintained his rigid posture, Jin Lian's face grew red, boiling over Shan's insinuating comments. The woman is on the verge of lashing out violently.
Sensing that their esteemed lady might be overboiling with rage, another guard came by with a small wooden box. In it contains a strange pipe, decorated with gemstones and a layer of gold. The guard then drew out a bag of plants, which is also peculiar to the Kyoshi Warrior. Round balls, likely flowers that have yet bloom, have its contents poured into the pipe and the guard lit up a small fire. Mayumi isn't sure what this device is supposed to do, but noticing Shan's judgmental gaze, it is likely not something socially accepted.
Jin Lian grabbed the beautifully ornated pipe and embedded inside her mouth.
With much confusion, Mayumi saw how the lady's frustration suddenly transformed into a relaxed and soothing one. What trickery is this? She thought. Upon further examination, Jin Lian's eyeballs rolled upwards in a very abnormal manner, almost like a person experiencing intense pleasure. It's difficult to understand what is happening, but she is glad that her sister is not here to witness this bizarre sight.
Without warning, Jin Lian suddenly let go of the pipe and breathed out. Thick vaporized smoke blew directly at Shan, enveloping Mayumi is also standing nearby.
"Cough!" Mayumi covered her mouth instinctively. She does not know what affect this smoke might induce if inhaled, which is why the worst-case scenario must be considered.
Still bearing his stoic expression, albeit slightly infuriated, Shan used his white paper fan to dispel the smoke. With one swift motion, the area around the stone table is cleared, allowing Mayumi to breath normally without worry.
"W-what was that?" she asked with wariness. Mayumi stared at Jin Lian, who is reinserting the pipe back into the mouth, seemingly enjoying whatever substance that is the 'smoke'.
"Invasive elements," Shan vaguely answered, eyes glaring at the guests. He is likely referring to the plant, which has stimulating effects on those who consumed the vaporized form.
There is no regret in Jin Lian's eyes. If observed carefully, both Shan and Mayumi can notice that they are slightly red, likely one of the effects by inhaling this pleasure inducing smoke.
"You have quite the audacity," Shan stated in an unforgiving tone. "Did you not know that such intoxicating plants are forbidden by the law?" As a scholar who endorses the ancient philosophy of hardline legalism, the undermine of the law is something he can never tolerate. If there is one thing Mayumi noticed about Fajia legalism it would be its indifference to punishing commoners and nobles, especially suppressing the latter. "What do you have to say for this legal transgression?"
"I am a member of the Ximen family," Jin Lian blurted with red eyes. Being too affected by the plant's naturally stimulating properties, she has a hard time overcoming the addiction.
As Jin Lian continued to indulge herself, Shan narrowed his eyes, refusing to tolerate this breach of conduct. "The Ximen family have enjoyed many exemptions granted by the past monarchy, both from taxes and preferential of the law. But the decree did not mention direct opposition to the city's administration. Additionally, you are not a member of the Ximen family by blood."
Shan's warning fell on deaf ears. The Ximen family is powerful, wealthy and influential. Why would they feel threatened by some young scholar who did well on a test?
Besides, what can a harmless scholar do in the presence of armed men with swords? Or what about that brown-haired woman who serves the tea? Surely, she can't anything right?
"Making a fuss about everything, that's all you people ever do," Jin Lian said in the midst of altered consciousness. With red watery eyes and the addicting feeling on this plant, she looked at Shan with mockery, pointing the pipe at him. "Are you jealous of me? You must be. Sure, you can write and managed to attain the rank of Zhuangyuan. So what? I think the real reason of that envy is because of there is one thing you will never have no matter how talented you are."
"And what may that be?" Shan calmly challenged.
Jin Lian began with a small laugh, insidious and callous. "A family, because a poor clanless street rat like you will never enjoy what I have that is plentiful." She sighed. "If only Shan the White Scholar can ever feel the joy of feeling belonged. I truly pity you. You may look down upon us all you want, at least we have something you can never attain." She then made a high-pitched chuckle, and then proceeded to inhale more intoxicant.
Shan's expression remains unchanging, still retaining that signature stoic expression. But this time, he did not respond to Jin Lian's ploy. He just sat there like a statue, not even blinking the eyes.
Mayumi looked at him with slight concern. She noticed that one his hands is gripping onto the only inkstone he used to grind ink. A soft crack followed, and the vital tool for his calligraphy snapped into pieces. The sharp edges cut across the surface of his right palm, yet Shan did not allow a single sound of pain to escape his mouth. Still lacking in emotion, he closed the right hand, hoping to minimize the laceration as much as possible. For a gentleman who likely never wielded a weapon in his life, Shan is surprising enduring well with such injury.
"Oh?" Jin Lian reacted with delight and humor. "For a prominent scholar, he can't even afford high quality goods!" She instructed her bodyguards to laugh. "Perhaps I should ask our young master to buy him a new one as replacement, an inkstone that is stronger than his pride!"
As the men laughed, Mayumi wonders why Shan is so fixated on this one insult. The chaos following the assassination of the Earth Queen created turmoil that resulted in the lives of many, naturally there will be those who lost their parents at a young age. The scholar may be an orphan, but it's no secret that there are many other clans seeking to arrange a marriage between the Zhuangyuan and their daughter. Which is why the wound Jin Lian inflicted is likely centered around Shan's past. If what was said contains a certain level of truth, then the scholar may not have a pleasant beginning. The obvious absence of family members walking around this siheyuan is already very supportive of her theory that Shan is the last of his kin.
Mayumi eyed the empty cup and noticed that the teapot is also in need of yet another refill. Without Shan issuing it, she resupplied in the kitchen and brought back the tray. But before she can place them on the table, Jin Lian suddenly jumped out of the chair and wacked the tray out of her arms. The porcelain tea set fell to the ground and splintered, much to her shock.
"What was that for?" Mayumi gazed furiously.
Jin Lian grinned smugly, crossing her arms as if she has accomplished a noble deed.
"Shan, for all your achievements, you don't even know how to keep your servants in check, disorganized and disillusioned, in all your infinite wisdom, you didn't even decide to take a noble's children as a student, quite funny if I do say so myself."
"Hey, leave her out of this!" Mayumi rebuked. She temporarily lost her control. It's easy to tolerate the prideful behavior of nobles with the exception whenever it negatively involves Satchiko.
Shan is still unresponsive. Sensing an opportunity, Jin Lian ordered the guards to 'educate' him how to properly manage the household that meets the ways of nobility. As the scholar is still stuck in a trance, one of the guards kicked the tower of books to the ground, stepping on them carelessly. It aims to showcase what will come to those who dare insult lady Jin Lian's intelligence. The rest of the men ransacked his room, throwing scrolls in the air while others hurled a few calligraphies, tarnishing Shan's work. Yet, the scholar still remains unfazed.
"You!"
Mayumi heard Jin Lian's disgusted voice. She doesn't know if it's the intoxicant induced conscious state or the woman's personal vendetta. Jin Lian lunged forward, trying to slap Mayumi, an act that is easily avoided with a small effortless dodge.
"Ah!" Jin Lian's face hit the grass. "You will pay for this peasant!"
"But you attacked first," Mayumi argued.
Two guards came by and held Mayumi in place. Jin Lian slowly got up from the ground. After cleaning the grass off her dress, the voluptuous woman positioned her hand near Mayumi's face, aiming to slap it. But before that is done, the guest looked at Shan.
"I am teaching you a valuable lesson, White Scholar, for a man who can't even manage his household correctly, he is not worthy to be an upstanding member of the city," Jin Lian said with utter glee. "Before you can even think about ascending to our level, you should learn how to know your place. Since you lack experience, I will properly teach this servant girl a lesson she will not forget!"
Mayumi clenched her teeth. Jin Lian is pettier than she thought. She doesn't want to harm them in fear that it may warrant a full retaliation from the Ximen clan. At this point, everything must be done to minimize attracting attention to both her and Satchiko.
Instead of shouting with pleas and cries, Shan suddenly stood up, somehow managed to attain everyone's attention amides the chaos with only silence. Jin Lian's smug expression also temporarily halted.
The scholar, with blood dripping from his right hand, wielded the slightly red-stained fan to cool himself. He has recovered from the earlier ploy triggered by Jin Lian's insensitive words and has regain the demeanor of a strict and stoic young man.
"The lesson is valuable, yours truly will put them to use right away as we should all accept our worth in this world. Therefore, we should all fulfill our assigned offices and not overstep them, but I believe it is not legally acceptable for you by mistreating my subordinate." He spoke.
Jin Lian's action aims to use Mayumi to belittle Shan's role as the responsible employer. It is lowly, but with the Ximen clan as a benefactor, what does Jin Lian have to fear?
"Maybe, but when it comes to experience, I am showing you how to train a servant to respect their superiors." Jin Lian retorted. Her whole wish right now is to forcefully pummel Mayumi's face. "And it is common knowledge of the law that mere servants cannot defend themselves, you should know."
Jin Lian made a wide grin, believing she has cornered Shan with his field of expertise. Mayumi is aware of this part of the law. Without proper permission, the likes of her cannot openly attack without repercussion, especially if it severely harmed influential members of the Upper Ring. Under one condition can this limitation be removed.
"Takeko, as of now, you are promoted, I demand that you defend me as I feel threatened by unwanted intruders." Shan surprised the rowdy visitors, especially Jin Lian. He then casually picked up the visitor's cup of tea and starts to enjoy the refreshingly cold brew. "A subordinate cannot be held responsible for something I wanted to be done."
"You can't do that!" Jin Lian yelled.
"My Lady, he...he can." One of the guards who are versed in this aspect of the law clarified.
"No matter. As if the bookworm would dare act so defiantly. This harlot over here cannot even-"
Mayumi sprung immediately into action. She performed two high kicks at the guards holding her hostage. As the two armored men dropped to the grassy floor, another soldier shields a frightened Jin Lian, who couldn't believe what she is seeing. The mere servant then fights the bodyguard with martial prowess, disarming his sword and threw him to the ground after a quick scuffle. She delivered a series of jabs across the spine though the gaps of armor, and the soldier just lied there, only the head is still moving.
Jin Lian lost her wits, unable to recognize what is happening. Three armored elites have been defeated by a peasant girl in a poorly repaired dress.
"Guards! Help!" Jin Lian cried on top of her lungs.
Thankfully, the other men don't need to rush to her safety. Mayumi dashed towards them first, twisting arms and striking the unprotected faces. The men swung forward with their swords just to have them disarmed. Despite being bulkier, the guards' strength worked against them, exploited by the young woman's unfamiliar tactics of grapple and evasion.
The fight ensued and Jin Lian quickly ran into Shan's study. She locked the doors, panicking and trying to breathe normally. The sound of conflict died down, and Jin Lian does not know who won. The guards assigned to her may be non-benders, but they are nonetheless elites who received good training, slightly superior to the normal city guardsmen. She pressed her ears on the door, trying to hear what is outside.
"Hey," Mayumi gently tapped Jin Lian's shoulder.
Somehow, this 'servant girl' managed to silently crawl through the paper window frame without being noticed. Standing right next to Jin Lian.
It could have been an overreaction, but Jin Lian screamed with an ear pitching scream, forcing Mayumi to cover her own ears.
The noble lady hastily unlocked the doors with trembling hands. She rushed out to the courtyards again but is confronted with a whole squad of downed guards, alive but groaning in pain. "W-what..." Jin Lian refuse to believe that the numerical advantage and better equipment was not enough to defeat a simple peasant. Mayumi followed out of the room, making the lady slowly back away in fear.
"Go away!" Jin Lian screamed again. She lost all the confidence. Mayumi no longer appear to be someone who would stand idle and allow herself to be slapped.
"Ah!" Jin Lian dropped after her foot tripped over an idle book. The intoxicating ornate pipe also fell out of her hands, and the Kyoshi Warrior picked it up to examine it. "You will pay for this!" Jin Lian pointed at Shan with fierce accusation.
Shan is still savoring his cold tea, lamenting that perhaps cold flavor tea is not as bad as other may claim.
He sighed. "Lady Jin Lian, you are renown for your beauty, but in truth, I believe your match with Ximen Qing is like a a rose planted atop a pile of dung."
His insult can be interpreted in different ways, but the philander Ximen Qing and the seductress Jin Lian are both very dislikable.
"Y-you!" Jin Lian pointed at Shan. Her hair is in disarray. Without the guards' protection, she felt powerless, something that should not happen as the wife of Ximen Qing. She noticed one of her servants hiding behind a tree. "Get over here and fight!" She screeched.
Shan pitied the poor fellow. He pulled out a few silver coins and gave it to the nameless servant and sent him out the doors. It was at this moment that Mayumi picked grasped Jin Lian's clothing. Despite trying to be gentle, the lady is simply too frightened.
"Takeko, give me that pipe," Shan said.
"Hey!" Jin Lian yelled indignantly. "That is a gift from young master Ximen Qing!"
After obtaining it, the scholar carefully examined it, he seems to be more familiar to this device used to consume the strange intoxicating plant. "Your lover has good taste, able to secure fine good from faraway lands. He is very good at picking what the best gifts." He meant that sarcastically. Ximen Qing's gift to Shan is a clock, which according to superstition, is a very inauspicious item which symbolizes death. In Jin Lian' case, that young heir has decided that enabling addiction is a suitable idea. "What a fine craftmanship, yet the talent has been wasted on creating a device for pointless indulgence." Shan commented on the pipe, the stoic pair of eyes filled with indifference. The Ximen clan has historically gotten away with many misconducts in the past, mainly due to their power and influence in Ba Sing Se's politics. It seems that some of them felt that testing the city's tolerance is an entertaining idea.
"Disgraceful, utterly disgraceful." Shan lamented on these nobles. He picked up a poppy plant from the box, smelling it temporarily to confirm his suspicion.
"Shan, what is that thing?'' Mayumi asked.
"Yapian plants," Shan replied. "Only the climate from the United Republic can such damaging substance be grown." He then locked eyes with Jin Lian using his usual stoic expression. For nobles who have only known submission from the common people, situations like this are not something she is prepared for. "But the fault also lies in the people that would dare purchase it. Consider yourself lucky. If you hadn't capture Ximen Qing's lust, I doubt someone like you would be so bold as to violate the city's prohibition."
"Don't you belittle me, clanless moron, I will have you know that the Ximen family will not take this matter lightly! Just wait until my beloved hears about this" Jin Lian threatened. But her voice is gradually overtaken by intense nervousness. Afterall, the 'servant' is still holding onto Jin Lian's clothing, not letting the rude guest go.
Shan cleared his thought and dispensed harshness. He pointed to the one commonly known quirk about Ximen Qing, the tendency to philander with woman, a fact that Jin Lian don't seems to be worried about.
"I may be clanless, but at least my status is built on a stable foundation," Shan alluded to his Zhuangyuan qualifications compared to Jin Lian who only used her beauty to attain upward mobility. How much can the latter depend her fate on someone else, especially a philanderer? "Do you seriously believe the love between you and Ximen Qing is genuine? You may harbor true affection, but what are you going to do when his finds another replacement? Aside from that face, what else do you have? To my knowledge, all his previous lovers and wives thought their love with the young heir is exclusive too. Where are they all now?"
Jin Lian made a hard gulp. Using his slender hands, Shan snapped the ornate pipe into half. With one simple motion, this expensive gift by Ximen Qing has been destroyed. The stoic young man then threw the box of Yapian plants to the ground.
The guest froze, unsure how to respond to Shan's behavior. The act of destroying a gift from another individual can be interpreted as disrespect. When it comes to dealing with the nobility, Shan is known to be not always cordial. In his eyes, merit is above birthright, for the White Scholar's respect must earned.
Jin Lian appears to be wanting to protest, snarling and clenching her teeth. But Shan ordered Mayumi to silent the seductress, using whatever means necessary.
"Repay the kindness to our honored guest, Takeko." Shan said to demean the rude visitor. "I will take all responsibility. It is unfortunate that my skills as a scholar did not meet Lady Jin Lian's expectations."
"Order your servant to stand down Shan! What kind of master are you when you can't even control this unkempt peasant girl?" Jin Lian demanded while her collar is still gently grasped by Mayumi. "A runt like you can never succeed in the Upper Ring without our backing! It's no secret that you are not the wealthiest man right now. Just because you now have one pathetic girl as a student that does not me-"
Mayumi instantly tightened her grip on Jin Lian's neck and glared fiercely into the noblewoman's frightened eyes. There is no pleasantry or tea sharing if the other party even slightly slandered her sister.
Noticing this development, Shan ensures that Mayumi can punish Jin Lian's behavior under his name. In the usual stoic mannerism, he granted her this opportunity for a bit of revenge.
"Takeko, just escort our esteemed guest out the doors." He opened his white paper fan and starts to cool himself again. "I believe she is very tired. Lady Jin Lian needs good rest and the company of young master Ximen Qing. Please, respond with proper manners worthy of Lady Jin Lian."
Trying to remain calm, Mayumi attempts to hustle Jin Lian to the entrance. Yet, Jin Lian 'fought back', trying to swipe her palm at the Kyoshi Warrior. The sharp nails almost cut her eyes, which promptly gave Mayumi the excuse to apply more force. This time, Mayumi did not hold back. She caught Jin Lian by the arm, which is surprisingly weak. The retaliation was no doubt satisfying. Swift and precise, a palm lightly slapped Jin Lian's right cheek, damaging the thick layer of expensive makeup. An imprinted hand showed. Although this petty attack inflicted no serious harm, the mere fact that a peasant raised her hand against the noble is already enough to daze all on scene.
The guards on the ground are shocked, both at the prospect of Mayumi hitting their lady and how they lost to a peasant.
"Y-you hit me?" Jin Lian cannot even think properly. To her, being assaulted by commoners is the utmost insult. "You dare do this...to me?"
"What is done are all liable under my name," Shan walked by, assuring Mayumi that her action reflects his will. "You just said I am unable to achieve structure in my household. But isn't this enough?"
Further emboldened, Mayumi raised her fist, implying that the earlier leniency has been diminished. Jin Lian did not argue further, quickly escaped through the entrance, ashamed of failing to bring Shan into the Ximen clan's fold. Gradually, the guards slowly dragged themselves out, leaving just Mayumi and Shan in the messy courtyard.
The scholar looked at her with that usual uninterested expression. But this time, he slightly raised an eyebrow at the woman who is still in a defensive posture. Mayumi knew what might be on his mind. From his perception, or the version she made up, the person named Takeko is a former opera performer in the Lower Ring and nothing more. In hindsight, the earlier performance of defeating Jin Lian's bodyguards would have been very suspicious considering she disclosed nothing about Kyoshi Warrior training.
"I picked a few moves on self-defense, they are similar to what I do during opera performances." Mayumi lied about her past. From the perspective of this gentleman, it makes no sense for this 'ordinary' non-bender to successfully defeat the guards.
"I never asked," Shan continued to himself. "But your abilities are certainly worthy of praise. But next time, consider a more opportune moment before humiliating the nobility."
"I am sorry, my emotions got into the way," Mayumi lamented, feeling like a hypocrite who wants Satchiko to not act rashly. If she accidentally caused irreparable damage to Jin Lian, then not even Shan's title as Zhuangyuan might be enough to salvage this situation. She is aware that scholars enjoy preferential treatments under Ba Sing Se's law but killing a noble would be a quick path to the grave, which is why testing his limitations was a very dangerous act.
"I suppose so," Shan vaguely answered. He is completely unfazed by the violence, almost ignoring the tattered state of his home after being vandalized by Jin Lian's bodyguards. "Such is the simple world of common minded, securing the interest of others beside themselves."
The scholar scanned the area, surrounded by scattered books, scrolls and random objects thrown around the yard. It would be hectic to clean up this mess.
"Don't worry, I got it," Mayumi sighed while trying to find the broomstick.
"No," Shan interrupted. "You fulfilled your duty in accordance with my wishes. It would not be meritorious for you to handle the consequences of my decision."
It was his way of taking responsibility. But in hindsight, perhaps she could have restrained from actually hitting Jin Lian. Whatever consequences will of course be all on Shan, as he is the owner of this property. Without any worries about his status as a scholar, he starts to pick up the books and scrolls, doing menial tasks that were supposed to be done by Mayumi. She just stood idle as Shan tries to repair the windows, sweeping the floors and dispose unneeded papers that were damaged.
Such behavior, while may be interpreted as a simple kind gesture, actually upsets the conventional relationship of how most society conducts itself. Especially in a city like Ba Sing Se, a high-ranking citizen who willingly perform menial tasks in the presence of hired hands is unfathomable. If an Earth Sage or conservative scholar witness this, the White Scholar would be berated for not respecting the hierarchy that aims to achieve ideal social harmony.
The White Scholar knows this and is aware that the conservative values of an idealist world proposed by the Earth Sages firmly denounce this. In the view of the Earth Sages and mainstream philosophy, servants and master exist for a reason, and those in higher positions of power must be respected to attain social harmony. In their view, if kings plowed the fields and peasants sat on golden thrones, there would be no order.
"Shan, thanks for giving me the opportunity to defend myself." Mayumi stated as the scholar replaced a paper window frame on his room. "If you hadn't pretended to promote me, harming them would have been more disastrous."
She heard a sigh from Shan. The young scholar is still fixated on his broken window frame.
"It seems that not paying attention also flows in your blood, I thought my statement was very specific."
"Wait, you were serious?" Mayumi asked in suppressed astonishment. "I just started working for you."
"That is not important," Shan said with a slightly harsh tone. He ripped out a section of the window and put in place a new one from the storage. "Your merit proves such eligibility."
Mayumi pondered. But told herself that something like this shouldn't be impossible considering Shan endorses a very different school of thought compared to the mainstream norm. His chosen philosophy is a very controversial one, an ideal plagued with a notorious reputation in history. The concept of a legalistic and meritocratic view has always been denounced as tools used by powerful tyrants, drawing the ire of Earth Sages and prominent mainstream scholar who favor a philosophy that advocates kind and compassionate rulers. Its unrelenting treatment of both peasants and nobility has accumulated the disdain of the latter, as it devalues birthright and suppress all subjects as the same. But if there is one aspect of Fajia Legalism that can view favorably, survived to this day even, it would be its meritocratic nature that nullifies birthrights, valuing the individual's capability above all. Some of the most powerful state entities in Earth Kingdom's history were always those who embraced strict meritocracy to a certain degree. The Keju exam is one of the main products that is still relevant.
Mayumi kept the gratitude brief, knowing Shan dislikes flowery words and unneeded pleasantries. For someone of his nature, productive questions are more appropriate.
"Don't worry, the pay will be higher too, much higher. It will be in accordance with your talent."
"I appreciate this new appointment, but is there anything I should be aware of now that I have this additional role?" Mayumi asked. As a secret Kyoshi Warrior not in uniform, she is just as capable without that makeup. But being a bodyguard to someone else is a role she has never been experienced with. Ironically, the Kyoshi Warriors have provided protection to the Fire Lord after the Hundred Years War, primarily serving as bodyguards to Firelord Zuko and by extension the Fire Nation royal family. That duty continues to this day, but only few were ever selected to be sent abroad.
"I am not demanding more than what should be expected. More will be elaborated after I return from the nearby administrative office, only with official approval can you even be eligible in bearing arms." Shan said. Hearing this, Mayumi felt this new role can benefit her tremendously. Official approval is just what she needs to safeguard from the Dai Li. It might even be enough to regain control of her prized sword.
"What weapon do you prefer?" Shan suddenly asked, as if he can read her mind. "As a scholar, I am not sure how much theatrical performance can translate to real fighting, but I assume a sword is what you would want. I am not doubting your skill but fighting unarmed is not always the best option for non-benders."
Mayumi vaguely responded that something like a sword would suffice, a simple single-edged blade is enough. Her katana has been confiscated; a simple substitute would indeed be useful. In a public scenario, having a weapon by her side can be helpful, especially if Shan again quarrels with some arrogant noble that also have bodyguards.
"Very well then," Shan halted the cleaning and headed to the entrance. "I will be making a trip to gather appropriate resources. Leave the damage for me to manage, do not interfere."
"Wait," Mayumi called out. She wanted to know more about her sister's progress. While this may be just the first lesson by this renown scholar, it's obvious Satchiko is struggling tremendously. From unable to write adequately and remember specific details of what was taught, this could set a very bad precedent for the near future. Many questions were asked, and one of which is about Satchiko's Earthbending, mainly if her sister's weakness is abnormal or just a small obstacle that can be fixed with some guidance."
Shan fanned himself, unconcerned at all. Despite his usual stoic expression, a small part of Mayumi is worried. While she does believe in her sister's perseverance, what if Satchiko still cannot succeed in the curriculum despite the additional help?
"Are you doubting my capability as a scholar?" Shan challenged, apparently displeased with her doubt.
Mayumi promptly apologized, alluding that today's commotion heightened her concerns.
"It's fine," Shan sighed. "Yours truly will abide to our agreement." He turned back to the entrance. "I may not return from the administrative office until very late," the scholar emphasized. "Food will be delivered, continue your normal schedule as usual."
Shan exited the courtyard after reiterating that all the damage caused by Jin Lian's bodyguards must remain untouched. He intends to personally finish the repairs. At this point, it's hard to decide if he was being virtuous or ideologically stubborn. Judging by Jin Lian's slandering words, it appears that the White Scholar do not always belong in the Upper Ring. Originating from a humbler background, this could explain one reason why that man disdains the nobility so much. Respectively, certain aspects of the Upper Ring also resent him for outperforming their own children, who had more resources and time to study for the very important Keju exam. Shan's existence robbed them of the utmost honor.
She does not know what to make of him. The White Scholar, famed for his intellect and attainment of the Zhuangyuan title, incurred both respect and resentment. If there is one aspect she dislikes, it would be his rather crude view of family bond. Perhaps he secretly harbors the same prejudice against herself and Satchiko's sisterhood. The source to his view may derive from the young man's past, something she does not wish to investigate.
The young woman sighed, hands on the hip. "What am I going to do now?" Mayumi asked herself aloud. Despite Jin Lian's unannounced interruption, the original task of cleaning this place is near completion. The real question is how she should be preoccupied for the rest of the day. Perhaps performing some more dusting could burn some time.
She glanced at her room, maybe rearranging some personal belongings could be productive. It may be prudent to somewhat hide her armor and remaining small knives in a box or closet, ensuring that Shan does not discover them to be actual weapons. It's rather surprising how the scholar still thinks those items are stage props, even after being stopped by Mayumi on that stone bridge, threatened with a shiny blade. Perhaps an entire life associating with paper and inkbrush, Shan has no experience with objects of war at all. At the same time, essentially everyone in the Upper Ring likely knows nothing about warfare.
The courtyard's two doors knocked lightly. Mayumi glanced at it, presuming Shan might have forgotten some money and return to retrieve it.
But right before her hand touches the handle, her body froze, something is wrong. She halted her breathing to minimize all presence and try to listen for anything sound that may emit from behind those two thick doors. There is no one standing outside.
"Very impressive," someone remarked. It was likely a praise to Mayumi's intuition, realizing that there is no one on the other side of the entrance door. "I thought you would dumbly answer the door, but clearly you are no ordinary individual."
"Enough," a deeper, more mature voice stated. "Making her uneased would not be beneficial." He turned to Mayumi, adapting a more approachable mannerism. "Forgive our intrusion, but there are matters that involves you which is tied to the interest of the state."
Their voices are very familiar. Mayumi slowly turned around, calmly facing the two men donned in darkish robes and conical helms. Their hands warmly protected by their long sleeves, and the top half of the faces concealed by their hat's brim.
"It is very rude to trespass upon the home of others, especially without permission," she slowly breathed through the nose, aiming to remain composed in the face of potential danger. "I suggest you both leave. The owner of this property would not be pleased by such presence." Mayumi maintained a stern gaze. Perhaps those two were watching when she defeated those armored bodyguards. But against trained Earthbenders, especially elite ones from Ba Sing Se, her martial prowess will not be sufficient.
The first time she faced one Dai Li agent, she almost died. If it wasn't for the lacquered armor, a small pellet of earth would have pummeled her flesh, likely fatal. Now, there is two of them, the expected number that coincides how they usually operate. The footprints on the wall of this siheyuan outside could be their doing. After all, a prominent intellectual like Shan the White Scholar will obviously attract attention, sometimes, unwanted monitoring. If the secret police aim to achieve harmony, then tightly controlling members of the bureaucracy would be vital.
"Don't you worry," one of them said casually. "Shan is famous, and we certainly don't want to be victims to his scathing eloquence."
She believes they have waited until Shan went away so that they can approach her alone. It also means they are after her specifically. Could it be motivated by what happened last night?
"If it would not inconvenient you too much, one of our own issued an order to meet in person." The other one stated formally. "We can assure you that no harm will come if you cooperate."
She could have sworn to hear this voice somewhere before but could not remember where exactly. Their faces, although unpainted, is obscured by the brim of their helmets. What is important now is that if the Dai Li have been listening carefully, they knew this is an opportune time to take her away without Shan noticing. Resisting would not be wise, considering how she almost got killed last night by only fighting one cultural guardian.
With much consideration and knowing there is no other safe option, this time, she accepts the invitation. Fighting these two unarmored would be futile, and it may violate the unofficial agreement with the first Dai Li she encountered. It's possible that she will be meeting him, likely to address issues posed by the Acolytes of San Bao and why she and Satchiko were targeted.
The sun is also slowly dusking behind those high towering walls. Living here for a while made her accustomed to the day and night cycle. Noticeably, the sunlight lasts shorter due to the height of the bastions.
"Fine, but only one condition," Mayumi stated. This is very important, and she cannot go with them without preparing this vital part of her kit.
"Name it," the deeper voiced Dai Li replied. "If it's reasonable, we will allow."
Mayumi points to her dress, which are in direct state of a professional tailor's intervention. Her own makeshift repairs caused her robe to appear unfit for public appearance.
"I am absolutely not going anywhere wearing this thing!'' She suddenly made an outburst, almost whining about the lack of decent clothing. "You seriously think I would go out there in this hideous garment! Ridiculous!"
"B-but that dress looks like it is made of silk." The more formal Dai Li correctly noticed.
"Silence!" Mayumi screamed back with an excessively high-pitched voice.
The two Dai Li agents, despite being elites trained in a deadly style of Earthbending and masters of espionage, were caught off guard by her trivial matter. They were completely deceived by this performance, all intended to make them believe that it is just a woman being overly picky about outward appearance. Mayumi knew she cannot simply go with them without a proper disguise.
Without explaining much to the men in confusion, Mayumi stormed into her room and slammed the door. In all their years of service, the two Dai Li cannot help but wonder what they just saw.
"Remember, do not ever place yourself in the path of a scorned woman, or else not even the spirits can save you," one of the Dai Li motioned.
"Hmph, bold of you to assume that the spirits intervene in the first place." The other snorted.
