The group released their first film, Cuts of Devotion, on Christmas Eve. It was a typical unrequited love horror story with Sonic and Amy playing the lead roles, though there were two notable exceptions. The first was the soundtrack comprised entirely of hard rock and heavy metal: a unique choice not seen in most movies. The second was the chemistry between Sonic and Amy. While not compatible as lovers in the real world, the film showed completely different sides to their personalities. In another time, things might've turned out differently, but only God knew for sure. These two qualities gained the movie a cult following, with many praising its characters and music despite the low production value. Compared to most releases in the romance genre, something about the story felt genuine. Had the horror elements been nixed, many would've been convinced they were watching a documentary. In the meantime, Amy expanded her media collection exponentially. The holidays before were fun, but now was the time for a major change.
One year later, on October 31st, 2002, Amy called Sonic and Tails to her place. The brothers expected things to play out much the same as before. They were stunned to hear otherwise.
"This year, I want to go trick-or-treating," Amy explained, "We'll play games and watch movies until around 5:30."
"Finally comin' out of your shell, huh?"
"I've been existing - not living. You guys helped me see that. It wasn't fair to Tails especially. You may be a super genius, but you have to find joy in your childhood while you've got it."
Tails paused. The profundity of his friend's words hit him like a truck. She wasn't just apologizing for stealing his time. She was apologizing for ruining his life. It broke his heart to know her true feelings. His expression became soft and compassionate.
"Amy...," he protested, "Don't grieve for me. I came here of my own free will because I knew you needed us. The love of others is what truly makes life worthwhile."
"Not if it's the wrong people."
"Trust me - I know who my friends are."
"I hope you're right..."
The fox grasped his companion in a crushing embrace.
"We love you, Amy..."
The hedgehog shut her eyes. A single tear trickled down her cheek...
"I'm guarded! I'm fragile, but if anyone could ever save me now, you can..."
