Chapter twenty-four: The provisional licence exams, part two
Spinner, Magne, and Gentle Criminal were able to drag slash fight Aizawa, Hizashi, and Emi out from the audience and into an indoor hallway area that led into the area of the audience that they were in. During said dragging slash fighting, Spinner managed to slap onto Emi a quirk-suppressing collar, thus sealing her off from using her quirk to potentially incapacitate him and the others. Outside in the audience, in the arena of Takoba National Stadium, Aizawa and his companions could hear the din of battle as the League of Villains began their attack on the Provisional Licence Exams.
"You villains have gone too far," Emi growled, "Attacking so large a gathering of innocent hero academy students from all over Japan! How many lives are you aiming to claim this time?!"
Spinner readied his katana, aimed the tip to point right back at the pro hero Ms. Joke. "That's for us to know, and you heroes to learn of later."
"You've already shaken things up for hero society with your actions during the Battle of Kamino Ward," Hizashi said, "Now you aim to attack a gathering of nearly five-thousand hero academy students?!"
Spinner, although keeping his glare on the heroes, lowered his blade. "...It's all the HPSC people here who we aim to kill. Any of the herolings that end up meeting their end in the process here today will actually be saved from a worse fate, a fate of being nothing more than the trained attack dogs of the HPSC, to attack and take down who their lords tell them to, when they tell them to do it." With a sarcastic gesture of his free hand, Spinner went on to say, "All for the sake of what the HPSC defines as 'keeping the peace'."
Aizawa took a stance for the inevitable battle with the villains before him, Hizashi, and Emi. "Lady Nagant is part of your brood. She must have been feeding your her rhetoric ever since you collected her."
"Are you really truly blind to the shadier aspects of what the HPSC gets up to?" Magne asked the underground hero, "I mean, we know about you at least to an extent, Eraserhead, know that you're a top name in the world away from the limelight that most heroes stick in. Surely a person such as you, one who regularly sees some of the darkest of what society has to offer, can't be entirely blind to how the bureaucrats in the HPSC who lord over Japanese hero society function in and out on a day to day basis."
Aizawa glared at the villainess before him. "...I have suspicion towards all large groups and or institutions with authority. The HPSC is no exception." Getting his capture tape ready, Aizawa went on, "But that doesn't matter right now. What DOES matter is that Hizashi, Emi, and I kick your asses and bring you in."
Spinner readied his katana back to pointing at Aizawa. "It's a damn shame that we only had one piece of quirk-suppressing tech that we were able to bring in, and had to slap it onto Ms. Joke to keep her from incapacitating us. If it weren't for that, we'd have slapped it onto you instead, Eraserhead. It'd allow us to take care of you far more easily."
"At least Twice, Muscular, Moonfish, and Felgrand will keep the hero students in the arena busy," Gentle Criminal spoke up.
Aizawa, Hizashi, and even Emi who had some knowledge on the matter all winced out of concern; Twice, Muscular, and Moonfish were three of the villains from the attack on the training camp run by the Wild, Wild Pussycats. Moonfish is an escaped murderer, Muscular as well and is arguably more dangerous, and Twice on his own could overwhelm even the near five-thousand hero academy students with sheer numbers thanks to his quirk. But what worried the hero teachers most of all was the fact that Felgrand, Dabi's monster of a bodyguard, was out there, primed and ready to undoubtedly kill by the thousands.
As he and the others got ready to face the villains before them in battle, Aizawa feared that he'll see even more of his students die.
Despite how they were led into a trap by Izuku that eliminated their entire class from the Provisional License Exams, UA's Class 1-A had no choice but to join up with Izuku and his fellow classmates in UA's Class 1-B in order to escape from the arena. Even so, while the combined forty first-year students were making their way to one of the few pathways leading out of the arena, some of the 1-A students had a few choice words for the green-haired boy.
"Deku!" Bakugo yelled, "The fuck was with that mess earlier?! You got me and the rest of my class eliminated from the exams on purpose, didn't you?!"
"Figures that we couldn't have trusted him," Shinso said as the UA students all got close to a pathway that'd lead them all safely out of the arena, "Given what all that Aizawa-sensei-"
"Aizawa."
Shinso took pause when Izuku spoke up, repeating the name of the underground hero with clear contempt in his tone. The green-haired boy chuckled in rueful irony as the UA students stopped right outside of entering the pathway close to them. Gently shaking his head, Izuku said, "That man really has proven himself to be one hell of a complicated and annoying piece of work, huh?"
Tokoyami and Uraraka, Izuku's friends in 1-A, both stepped forward, with Tokoyami speaking up. "...You got us eliminated solely to spite Aizawa-sensei, didn't you." The way Tokoyami spoke sounded more like he was making a statement, rather than asking a question.
"You got us eliminated to spite Aizawa-sensei?" Mina asked, looking surprised.
Turning to face Class 1-A, Izuku said, "Believe you me, I actually had sincerely wanted to help you guys. But the high and mighty Aizawa would undoubtedly not stand for it. As far as he's concerned, you guys are only allowed to rely on yourselves." Gesturing to his classmate Pony, Izuku went on to 1-A, "Did you not see how he cut Pony off when she was wishing you guys luck earlier? How he basically said you guys don't need well-wished from outside of the twenty of you?" Scoffing, Izuku said, "How can you all even stand being under the authority of a man li-"
"We don't."
Izuku was cut off when Ojiro stepped forward, an even expression on his face. "...I'm going to be honest with you, Midoriya," Ojiro went on, "I'm certain that I'm far from the only one in my class who's had it with Aizawa-sensei's impossible standards, his overly harsh rule over us, his all take and no give expectations. He clearly has no care for us as people, only for what results that he can force out of us."
"I'm surprised that Principal Nezu hasn't done anything to read Aizawa-sensei the riot act!" Mina called out, "He should have been fired as a teacher long ago!"
Kurata nodded in agreement. "I know that we're expected to work hard in training to become pro heroes, I mean we ARE prepping to one day get a job in a field where we have to deal with disasters, rescue innocent people, and punch villains in the face. But Aizawa-sensei's quote unquote 'training' comes off more as straight up torture than actual training! It's like he gets some sort of sick kick out of making us suffer!"
Shrugging, Shizuo said, "Some of you guys just need to work harder is all."
Scoffing, Jiro scowled, "Oh sure, easy for YOU to say, Shizuo. You're one of the few in class who Aizawa-sensei actually approves of. Just like Shinso, Mahou, and Baku-"
"Deku's got a point."
Everyone was cut off when Bakugo spoke up. The explosive, ashy haired teen looked right to Izuku, behind which stood Izuku's classmate Pony. "...Aizawa-sensei may not have been a nutjob towards me," Bakugo said to Izuku, "But I'm not blind to how he's been one to most everyone else in my class, as well as pretty much everyone in your class, Deku. The example you gave a few moments ago of Aizawa-sensei interrupting Tsunotori when she was only trying to wish me and my classmates luck is one such example."
"It still sucks that we were eliminated from the exams, which means none of us will have a chance of getting our Provisional Licences," Sero said, "But if it means that Aizawa-sensei gets a thorn in his balls over it, then I'm certain that I speak for most of my classmates when I say we're willing to take one for the team."
"Plus," Tokoyami began pointing out, "Given that the exams were interrupted by an attack by actual villains, I think the exam results here will be rendered redundant anyway."
As everyone nodded in agreement, Nirengeki spoke up. "Hey, speaking of the exams being attacked by villains, weren't we-"
*THOOM*
Nirengeki was cut off when a tall row of spikes rose up to trap all of the UA students, all forty of them, in a fenced-in pit with the pathway that they were running for, which got sealed off leaving the UA students completely trapped. As the UA students panicked, the dragon Felgrand, not using Gigantification at the time so he was only in his normal dragon size (which is still pretty big) flew overhead to the other side of the fenced in area, before flying in place over the edge so that all of the trapped UA students could see him. For the UA students aside the 1-A girls minus Uraraka, this was the first time any of them had seen the dragon villain in person.
"UA students!" Felgrand said as he looked down at his prisoners, "I know full well that you all are from that ruinous place that kills dreams. A good thing that I had caught you all before you had escaped, as I want to have a few words with you all."
The UA students all looked up nervously at the dragon villain, but had to play along; for the time being, he didn't seem interested in killing any of them. "What do you want with us?" Itsuka called up to Dabi's monster of a bodyguard.
"Choose one from among the number of UA's Class 1-A to be your representative first," Felgrand replied.
The UA students were worried, especially since it was clear that Felgrand, and by that extent the rest of the League of Villains, had at least some working knowledge of how class structure in UA worked. Any knowledge from UA in the hands of the LoV was bound to be a bad thing. Regardless, the 1-A students began talking amongst themselves, arguing about who to send forward. Dark Shadow who popped out of Tokoyami suggested sending Yaoyorozu forward since she's 1-A's class rep, but the girls all objected to that since Yaoyorozu was still getting over having been kidnapped by the LoV.
As the 1-A students deliberated amongst themselves, they as well as 1-B were surprised when Aoyama stepped forward. "I'm part of Class 1-A from UA," Aoyama spoke up while raising a hand, "My name is Yugo Aoyama."
Felgrand gave a low, somewhat snarl-like growl as he eyed the sparkly French boy of 1-A. "...Yugo Aoyama," Felgrand said, "A task for you." Aoyama, as well as the rest of the UA students, were surprised when Felgrand was apparently just charging Aoyama with a task. They were wondering what said task could be, though; and given that it was coming from a villain who Juzo had described as being a 'World Boss from an JMMORPG', there was a lot of worry about what it was that Felgrand was going to tell Aoyama to do for him.
...However, it turned out that it only to deliver a message. "Tell your UA High School a message for me," Felgrand said, "Tell them that All Might isn't their only staff member whose head Felgrand aims to claim." The dragon villain gave the same snarl-like growl before he continued to tell Aoyama the message that he wanted him to deliver for him. "Tell them that Eraserhead is also on the chopping block."
"You want to kill Aizawa-sensei?!" Shinso nearly exclaimed, shocked that Felgrand was now issuing a threat to the underground hero. Even the (many) students in 1-A who weren't amused with their homeroom teacher were concerned to hear that Aizawa now had a target on his back that the dragon villain was taking aim at. Even the green haired boy of 1-B was surprised to hear Felgrand declare an intent to take Aizawa's head.
"...You have your task, Yugo Aoyama," Felgrand said, "Now I'll release you to carry it out. Your fellows who are with you are also free to go." Felgrand then landed behind the tall fence of earthen spikes, then a few moments later the sealed up pathway leading out of the arena was unsealed.
"...It's bound to be a trap," Shinso said, "He's gonna try to kill us with a sneak attack while we're rushing through the pathway to escape."
"But he wants the message he gave to Aoyama delivered," Mahou spoke up, "It'd be hard for the person that he gave the message to to deliver said message if he kills the messenger."
Before anyone else could say anything, all of 1-B and some of 1-A already started running through the unsealed pathway, forcing the rest of 1-A to run after them. To their credit, they saw that Felgrand was a dragon of his word, as he really was letting them go.
Aizawa, Hizashi, and Emi were having a tough time keeping up with Spinner, Gentle Criminal, and Magne. Out of the three villains, only Spinner wouldn't be rendered useless by Aizawa's Erasure, which was probably why the lizardman villain was keeping himself up in Aizawa's face. The underground hero couldn't take his eyes off of his fight with Spiiner to help Hizashi and Emi out with Magne and Gentle Criminal without risk getting himself stung by the cutting bite of Spinner's katana. Aizawa had to pull out his hunting knife and parry all of Spinner's strikes, successfully doing so actually.
"I have to admit," Spinner said, "Your work with a blade is fairly good."
Aizawa leapt back to get some distance from Spinner. "So you villains plan to kill everyone here affiliated with the HPSC."
"It's to get a point across, sweetie," Magne remarked to the underground hero in an open window while she was fighting Emi.
"Shouta is MY sweetie!" Emi declared as she dealt a flying kick to Magne, who blocked it with her large magnet, "No one else gets to call him that!"
Parrying another katana strike from Spinner with his hunting knife, Aizawa yelled, "Now's not exactly the time for stuff like that, Emi!"
While he was fighting Gentle Criminal, Hizashi tried to use his quirk to shout at Gentle, but Gentle stretched the air in front of him to bounce the shout back, sending Hizashi flying. The loud pro hero was sent tumbling, and Gentle not wanting to let up rushed him and kicked him in the ribs, sending him tumbling a bit again and even making him cough up some bile.
As much as he wanted to go over to help Hizashi, Aizawa couldn't without risking serious injury to himself in the form of receiving a painful katana strike from Spinner, who was swinging with equal parts speed and skill. This forced the underground hero to put all of his effort, all of his focus, into just defending; he wasn't as skilled in the use of blades as his opponent, and he was using a hunting knife versus Spinner's katana. Lesser blade skills, and with an inferior blade; Aizawa was barely making even solely because of a mad will to not get killed here.
He couldn't even find time to assess the situation, otherwise Aizawa not only would have noticed that Spinner was intentionally strike to strike him with the flat edge of his katana, but also clearly wasn't trying to kill him but rather simply defeat him.
Out in the arena, the hero academy students (aside from all of the ones from UA as those ones were able to escape) were all either fighting for their lives or running for their lives. The one villain was constantly making clones of himself, letting him keep things at a numerical advantage for him and his allies, the one bound in a black leather full body wrap was shooting long rows of teeth everywhere, and the psychotic muscular brute was sadistically laughing with maniacal glee as he rampaged here and there throughout the arena.
Most terrifying of all was the dragon who flew in a circle around the outer edge of the stadium pit; the walls in front of the bleachers were all too high, and all of the pathways leading out of the arena had been sealed off, meaning that there was no escape from the villains. Muscular held a chubby girl from an all-girls hero academy aloft by grabbing her by the front of her top. With a vile, self-amused sneer, Muscular grabbed the girl by her head and began to squeeze as hard as he can as he cried out, "I wonder how hard I have to go until your head pops like a cherry! I'm at thirteen kills so far, so I wanna raise it, if only to not have an unlucky number stuck to me as my kill count!"
The chubby girl blasted Muscular in the face with a sparkly aura energy attack, distracting him and startling him into dropping her. "Gaahh!" Muscular screamed as he wiped at his face as the chubby girl got up and stumbled back, up until she hit her back into the side of a building in one of the areas of the arena for the Provisional Licence Exams. After regaining his composure, Muscular saw where the chubby girl was standing. "Feh, should have broken your arms so you couldn't use them before I began trying to crush your head," Muscular snarled angrily at the chubby girl as he advanced on her.
She was trapped, and wouldn't be able to run away from Muscular. Just as she was beginning to see her life flash before her eyes, things caught back up to the present suddenly when a row of large earthen spikes shot up along the ground in front of her, starting from her left and going on for meters on end past her right. This row of spikes attack came about a meter shy of even grazing her, but it DID manage to impale Muscular, going through his gut and chest with one spike each; a smaller spike even pierced his head through his fake eye before poking out the back of his head.
As the chubby girl began to calm down from almost being murdered because her would-be murderer was impaled to death just now right before her very eyes, she heard the loud, inhumane roar of the bodyguard of the League of Villain's leader sound out; turning quickly she was able to just in time see Felgrand fly overhead before disappearing over some more set up buildings. The chubby girl thought that Felgrand was trying to kill her but accidentally killed one of his own allies instead, probably due to poor aim, and thought that the dragon villain was going to circle around to try again.
The chubby girl didn't want to be around when the dragon villain circled back around to try to get at her again, so she ran into the building she backed up against to hide. Hopefully, the dragon doesn't get the idea to try wrecking any of the building setups. As she hid, the chubby girl prayed to whatever deity would care to listen for her to get out of this mess alive. She prayed that as few of the other hero academy students, especially those from the same all-girls school as her, as possible will meet their ends here at the Provisional Licence Exams.
She prayed that the dragon won't find her and kill her.
Inside some halls in Takoba National Stadium, the UA students were running around, looking for anyone who might be in danger; although worried about themselves, the UA students were STILL heroes in training. It would be a poor showing on their part if they all simply turned tail and ran, especially if others would be left in danger as a result of such cowardice.
"So who the hell are we looking for here?" Setsuna called out.
"This may be speculation on my part," Aoyama spoke up as everyone ran, "But what if the villains attacking this place wanna take aim at who all from the HPSC is here to administer the Provisional Licence Exams?"
Izuku looked surprised by what Aoyama had come up with. "The HPSC affiliates?"
Aoyama nodded once in the affirmative. "Well, the HPSC is basically the command for pro hero society here in Japan, right? Maybe the villains want to take aim at those affiliates in order to send a message of some kind?"
Yaoyorozu had a grim look of consideration on her face. "...That would actually make some sense, especially if the villains are aiming to go so far as-"
"Ahh! Help me!"
Yaoyorozu was cut off when she and the other UA students all heard a tired sounding male voice cry out as loudly as he could, then turned to see Mera of the HPSC being chased by half a dozen Twice clones, some of which were screaming things about how Mera was going to die. Mera spotted the UA students and rushed right into the think of their large group, aiming to seek shelter from the Twice clones. "That duplicating villains made some clones of himself and sent them after me!" Mera cried out, "You kids gotta protect me!"
"As soon as we deal with those clones from that villain," Izuku began, "The forty of us are getting you out of here, sir." Even though one of the Twice clones was starting to make even more Twice clones, the UA students blasted where the Twice clones stood with whatever all projectile attacks they were capable of dishing out. After the barrage was done, all that was left of the Twice clones was a large smear of gray sloppy gloop that was on the floor, which Mahou had incinerated with his black flames for good measure.
After that mess was taken care of, Izuku said, "Everyone, let's move while fighting off what villains we come across! Prioritize protecting the civilian with us!"
"I'll let you call the shots here THIS time, Deku," Bakugo growled indifferently as he and the rest of the UA students all moved to vacate from the besieged stadium while protecting Mera from any and all villains that they came across.
...
Eventually, the forty UA first year hero course students made it outside of Takoba National Stadium. They moved in a tight group while Mera stayed down, as per Izuku's urging so as to keep him out of sight from the prying eyes of villains as much as possible. "Do we hide him in one of the busses?" Mina suggested.
"The villains may attack the busses at some point," Jurota pointed out, "I say we-"
"-Stop to say hello."
The UA students all paused as they heard a sinisterly amused voice call out, then turned to see Dabi, the leader of the League of Villains, standing there. Accompanying him were Mustard, Rappa, and a Twice (the UA students had no clue if it was the real deal or another clone of him). Holding up his right hand, Dabi gave a snap of his fingers before saying, "Twice, surround them."
Before the UA students could act, the Twice that was there made enough clones of himself to completely surround them, effectively trapping them in a ring of clones of himself. Taking a step forward, Dabi said, "Now that I have the attention of you little herolings, perhaps you'll be liable to listen to me." Pointing to Todoroki, Dabi went on, "Or to be more precise, maybe Endeavor's baby boy here will be willing to shoot the breeze for a bit."
Todoroki glared at the flame villain who now led the League of Villains. "...You have a beef with my father, that much is clear."
"Speaking of your dear ol' dad," Dabi began, his voice sounding with friendly curiosity that Todoroki could tell was sarcastic, "How's he doing? I hear that he's the de facto top hero in the country now given that All Might retired, and that it's all but certain that he'll be made the top dog officially when the actual rankings drop."
The son of Endeavor glared unamusedly at Dabi. "...He as well as all of Japan's pro heroes have a lot on their plates now thanks to you and your villainous brood."
Shrugging, Dabi replied, "Hey, what can you do?" Gesturing for the UA students to step aside, Dabi said, "Anyway kids, move out of the way so that Mustard can get a clear shot at that Mera fellow from the HPSC. Nagant was the one who wanted to kill him, but since he's here right now, I guess Nagant will have to wait until we can take aim at other top heads from where Mera dwells."
None of the UA students moved away from Mera; Todoroki even moved to stand more in front of Mera while facing Mustard. "...If you want to shoot the man behind me," Todoroki began, "Then you'll have to shoot me first. And it will have to be a shot aiming to kill, because nothing short of death will keep me from doing what work I'll be doing when I eventually become a pro hero."
Dabi arched a wry eyebrow at the son of Endeavor. "...You are, at the same time, both similar to your old man and totally different than him. He'd also refuse to let us kill Mera if he were here, but he'd try attacking us rather than focus on protecting the target." After a few tense moments of staring off at one another, Dabi broke away first when he got a call on a walkie talkie. He pulled the walkie talkie out, flipped a switch so that he could communicate with the other end. "Dabi here," said the blue flame villain, "What is it?"
"This is Nagant," came Nagant's voice from the walkie talkie, loud enough so the UA students closest to Dabi could make out what Nagant was saying, "I'm outside on the edge of Takoba National Stadium and I can see you and the others confronting the hero kids. I would of have a clear shot at Mera if those kids weren't so clustered around him."
"So you want me and the lads here to pull them away?" Dabi asked.
"Actually, we're going to have to bail," Nagant replied in a grimly unamused tone, "La Brava just got it that a bunch of pro heroes are on their way to Takoba National Stadium, enough to overwhelm us. Even Felgrand will be pushed given that Eraserhead will undoubtedly be freed up to use his quirk on him."
"Did we at least kill SOME of the HPSC affiliates here at Takoba National Stadium today?" Dabi asked.
An exasperated sigh came from the walkie talkie Dabi held. "Unfortunately no," Nagant replied, "They all skittered away like the roaches they are while the hero academy teachers here, as well as some hero academy students who were able to join the fight, distracted us. Also, both Muscular and Moonfish were killed accidentally by attacks from Felgrand because they got in his way. You, your group down there, and I are the only ones who Kurogiri hasn't warped out of here yet."
"Tell Kurogiri to warp us at my signal," Dabi said, "I wanna leave these hero kids with some parting words first." Lowering his walkie talkie, Dabi said to the UA students, "Well what do you know, kids. The cavalry's coming to save the day, meaning that the lads and I have to bail. And two of my own were killed because they're reckless idiots. Hopefully what damage we HAVE been able to do before we were forced to bail here will still send at least some of the message we wanted to get across." Dabi then used the walkie talkie to give Nagant the cue to have Kurogiri warp him and the others.
All but one of the Twices collapsed into goop, meaning that the remaining Twice was very likely to be the real deal. That one Twice, along with Dabi, Mustard, and Rappa, were then warped away by the dark mist of Kurogiri; it had been Setsuna who had spotted a similar bit of swirling dark mist on the top of the edge of Takoba National Stadium. The mist then faded, signifying that the League of Villains' attack on the Provisional Licence Exams had come to a close.
With the villains officially gone, the hero students and Mera were all able to breathe sighs of relief. Even so, damage was bound to have been done, and even the most idealistic among the UA students were certain that loads of the hero academy students from the other competing hero academies here today were killed during all of the chaos at Takoba National Stadium. It was as the first of the pro heroes arriving on scene to help out began showing up that Mera, moving to stand in front of the forty UA students, expressed his thanks to the first years of UA's hero course.
"Even at the risk of your own lives, you acted to save me and get me out of danger. I'm actually fairly high ranked in the HPSC, you know. I'm pretty sure I can convince the President of the HPSC to... make certain arrangements that all of you will like, as a show for your clear heroism today."
END, CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Author's notes;
This chapter continues the chaos of the attack on the Provisional Licence Exams; technically the fighting ends here, but there will be some wrapping up in the next chapter, as well as officially stated totals for damages caused and lives lost. You guys will actually be very surprised to learn how many of the competing hero academy students were actually killed, as well as how they died. The number that Felgrand's responsible for will be ESPECIALLY surprising.
But that's not here or there. The next chapter will see things for the Provisional Licence Exams wrap up, as well as those numbers published, and Aizawa will even be having some words with Izuku. There's also how many, if any, of the hero academy students at the Provisional Licence Exams will get provisional licences; seeing as how the exams WERE attacked by the League of Villains, things might end up being ruled redundant anyway. But you never know, especially when there's a grateful person with notable rank involved.
I... also saw how some folks were... less that happy with Izuku's actions in the previous chapter. I apologize if it unsettled some, but it's actually a necessary step to an ultimate plan that Izuku has to simultaneously get back at Aizawa for what all crap the underground hero had and to actually help 1-A in the long run, a plan that will become more apparent as time goes on (here's a hint: rebellion). There's always a method to my madness.
There are also a few other points to make, mainly how Izuku has gotten THAT fed up with Aizawa, how (most of) 1-A once Izuku explained himself understood and even willingly 'took one for the team' (most of 1-A is ALSO that fed up with Aizawa), the exams were attacked by the League of Villains so the results from this exam will be ruled moot (meaning 1-A's elimination here won't be counted against them), Mera who has notable rank in the HPSC is grateful to 1-A and 1-B for saving and protecting him, and the point that I feel ought to be pointed out here, Aizawa is going to be getting back at Izuku for the stunt he pulled. When Aizawa does, you'll know.
