Hello to those of you still reading! Thanks for being here. Just a quick clarification: you'll notice some of the school policies, such as dorms, are implemented before they would be in canon MHA. Others, such as the Legacy program, are completely made up by me. Hopefully, it won't be confusing, but feel free to ask any questions if it is.
Have a nice day!
~The Cursed One
"What do you want?"
I stopped myself from saying I wanted to help him realize his dream. Whether I meant to or not, I'd been using Moe as something to keep from focusing on myself. I thought of what I enjoyed; food and sleeping, thrill rides and games. If I could do anything, like I always say Moe can… What would I want?
The tears returned.
"…I don't know, sweetie." I wanted to not be sad. "You know how I am… It was worse before you came to me. Before we found each other. I never meant to put pressure on you like this, it's not like that at all. But you really made me a happier person. I… I wish I had a better answer for you." I looked at the letter, "I don't know if this is what I want. I just don't. I… I don't know what to do."
I covered my face as the tears gained momentum. Moe hugged my arm and waited.
"What if there's another someone like me?" He asked suddenly, "Out without someone like you?" I blinked, still staring at the ground, "What if someone else was lost like I was lost? Would you want to help? Would that make you happy?"
I peeked up at him.
"Yes." I whispered. Moe held up the envelope.
"They think you'd be good at it. I know you're good at helping when people need it."
"How do you know me better than I know myself?" I asked, wiping tears a snot from my face on my sleeve. He gave a big, childish grin.
"How do you think I picked what I wanted to do?"
.
I called and got a refund for the tickets. We could always catch a later train. There was no sense rushing.
With Moe in tow, I found a small cafe by UA, ordered us food, and finally opened the envelope, quietly reading aloud.
To Ms. Juniper Manderly,
We are pleased to inform you that you passed with flying colors! You are now officially a part of the Hero track at UA High! Congratulations! In this welcome packet, you'll find the following items:
Specific comments on each of your test results.
Classroom Information.
Uniform Specifications.
School Rules.
Dorm Policy.
Payment Information.
If you need any accommodations, please reach out to the administration desk before the first day to work something out. We know just how difficult it is to get where you are, so we'll do everything we can to ensure you can attend!
Have a wonderful day,
Headmaster.
Apparently, though I'd gotten a few things wrong in the multiple choice section of the written test, my short answers showed concern for everyone involved and excellent strategic analysis, considering different possibilities. That gave me the point boost. The practical exam was apparently very difficult for them to grade. They had to replay the footage over a dozen times at different speeds to be able to understand what I'd done. Once they had, they counted up the robots I'd disabled along with the students who had been spared injury by my actions, which gave me my point total.
I skipped to the dorm policy. Apparently, stay at the dormitories was not optional. We'd be set into buildings by class, floors by gender. It said something about restricted access for visitors, but nothing about how I might sneak Moe in.
Finally, I agreed that it was time to speak to the administration about the possibility of attending.
"I can certainly submit the form for financial aid." The woman said, "And since you're in the hero course, it's very likely to be approved. As for your brother, however…" She gave Moe a weak smile, "I'm afraid only students are allowed to live in the dormitories. He'll have to stay with your parents, I'm afraid."
"We don't have parents." Usually, I wasn't so blunt. But I needed her to be helpful here.
Sure enough, the poor woman turned scarlet and needed a moment to collect herself.
"I'm very sorry. I shouldn't have assumed."
"It's okay. But I obviously can't leave him alone."
"Surely, you two have been staying… somewhere?"
"You mean the orphanage." People avoided that word like the plague. "No, it's in another city, and he… no. Isn't there anything we can do? I can't attend if he can't stay with me."
The woman seemed flustered,
"There's really nothing I can do, miss. I'll email my boss and see if she can't brainstorm something, alright?"
"Ah! I remember you!" All Might himself walked up to us and Moe's eyes just about turned into stars. "This must be your brother! Hello, there!" He held up his hand and Moe high-fived him. "I knew Hawks would make quick work of the problem."
"Yes, sir." I confirmed, "Um, thanks for bearing with me."
"Of course!"
"Mr. All Might, sir!" The secretary said in a loud whisper, "You're not supposed to be in the open like this!"
"It's just us!" Everything he said sounded like a declaration. "What brings you here today, ah, what was your name?"
"Juniper Manderly, sir." I said, "And I'm just chatting about accommodations to see if I attend here."
"Manderly!" He boomed, making the secretary wince and check over her shoulder, "I remember your test! It took us an hour to count your points!" Before I could apologize, he continued, "Why wouldn't a prospective young hero attend? What seems to be the problem?"
"I don't want to bother you…"
"Please! Bother me!"
"She should easily get financial aid," The secretary squeaked, "But, ah, there's an issue with housing. She's willing to move into the dorms, but says she needs accommodations for her brother as well, but it's against school policy to have anyone but students living in the residence halls…"
"I see!"
A beat of awkward silence passed.
"Then, let's make him a student!"
Just about all of us started asking what he meant at the same time. He continued,
"Young man, are you interested in becoming a hero one day?"
Moe took a moment, still staring, but then shook his head.
"He wants to join Support when he grows up." I provided, hand on his head, "He's brilliant and inventive, but I know he's too young…"
"Normally, yes!" All Might exclaimed, "But, there's the Legacy Program!" He held up a welcome packet for teachers, "I just read about it!"
As goofy as he sounded, the secretary spurred into action, typing quickly.
"I hadn't thought of that!" She said, "It's really only offered to teachers; it's a small program mostly composed of teachers' children. They stay on UA grounds, complete their studies with a range of tutors… these are usually skilled in combat as well, since our teachers are heroes and are prone to having enemies. For the older or more advanced students, they can sit in on classes in their branch of interest…" She looked up with a victorious smile, "This could work!"
"That sounds amazing! Moe?"
Moe looked like he could jump over the moon. His head bobbed up and down like it was broken.
"Excellent!" All Might seemed equally excited, and I found it funny how childish he was in person.
"Now, some of the teacher's residences offer a conjoining room for their children, but…"
"An extra bed would be more than enough." I interjected, starting to feel excited myself, "Would that be possible?"
"Well, yes! If you're sure that's alright."
"Definitely! You're a miracle worker." The secretary blushed.
"Well, thank you! I'll get it all sorted out. Let me take down your brother's information, alright? We'll enroll him and have him start the same day as you."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you."
After that, surprisingly, we left.
School didn't start for another month, so we took the evening train and arrived back at town, like nothing had happened. I teased the kids by hinting I may have met a few heroes, but ultimately went to bed early.
What would I tell Mrs. Bead?
