Chapter 4 - sad endings
Kushina didn't understand what was going on. Just after her birth she had been a bit groggy and couldn't really focus her mind. She understood something terrible happened when someone she didn't recognize put their hand on her stomach, and then she wasn't in the cave anymore. She got a strange sensation all over her body, even her mind felt like it warped and where in several different places at once, she couldn't really tell. It was almost like the feeling when her husband teleported her with his hiraishin, but not really. This was something different.
The feeling suddenly disappeared after a few seconds and she saw she was in a forest. It looked like the trees that are in the forest of death. She also remembered at this moment that's where the cave was, so she was probably right she thought 'this must be the forest of death'. She started to breathe hard in panic "my babies, what happened to my babies!".
"Hello there Kushina-sama, pleasure to meet you" a voice close to her said. She turned towards the voice and saw a man standing there with a creepy mask on his face. Her face twisted into a snarl and she said "Where is my family?", she couldn't remember ever feeling this much hate towards someone. She wanted to murder this man this second, but she could barley move.
"You should calm down. Your family is fine. You should worry about yourself right now" the man told her camly.
Kushina just stared at the man with murder screaming in her eys. "Why have you brought me here!?" She growled out at him.
"I want the kyuubi to come out and play, so i'm going to release him from your seal of course" The man told her like he had no care in the world.
"Is this a game to you?". Kushina was pissed beyond belief. Now she was starting to get really worried about what this man planned on doing. "I would never let you do that!" she half screamed at him.
"You won't let me? Oh please little Kushina. This is going to happen whether you like it or not." He said as she could hear him snicker to himself.
The man walked towards Kushina and kneeled down beside her. "Just relax now, this will be over soon" He told her, almost like he was trying to sooth her feelings. That made her even more afraid and angry. 'What the hell is wrong with this person!' she thought.
He put his hand on her stomach where the seal was located. "What are you doing!? Get your hands off me!" Kushina started to scream in panic. "This will only take a few seconds" He said calmly as he ignored her screams and started to channel chakra into her seal.
Kushina could feel the kyuubi inside her thrashing violently.'Is this really happening? I'm dead if he gets free, and so is the whole village!' she thought in panic. She had no energy to fight back, and that really pissed her off. She felt helpless.
A few meters away from them, there was a big yellow flash. Kushina turned towards the yellow flash, hope filling her eyes. The man just kept doing whatever he was doing to Kushina's seal and ignored the incoming people.
Kushina saw her husband standing there and she felt relieved. Then she saw another person, a much smaller one. 'Oh my god, what is Naruto-kun doing here!' she thought.
"Stop whatever you are doing to her!" Minato said with as much authority he could muster. He was in a small panic and pissed beyond belief, so he had to keep his nerves in check. This was a delicate situation. He briefly looked towards his left and saw that his son had tagged along.'Damnit Naruto!, this is too dangerous for you' he thought as he was scared for his son now as well. No time to scold Naruto now, so they just had to make the best of the situation.
"I told you to stop what you are doing, and step away from her!" Minato said again, almost shouting this time. The stranger turned his head and looked straight at the Hokage with his only hole in the mask revealing a sharingan. 'Sharingan!' Minato thought in a small panic. 'This is no person from the village! I would recognize their chakra signature. Who is this?'
"No need to shout Hokage-sama, we are all civil here" he said calmly, just from his voice alone you could imagine his smirk under that damned mask of his. "It's alright though. I'm done anyway" he told them as he stood up and faced the hokage and his son.
"What have you done?" Minato asked with narrowed eyes and venom in his voice. Naruto was getting nervous, he immediately knew what had just happened. He could feel the buildup of dark chakra inside Kushina. 'Oh no…mom'.
The man said nothing and just stepped away from Kushina as a tremendous amount of dark red chakra exploded out from Kushina as she screamed.
A few kilometers away Jiraiya, Hiruzen, Kakashi and a bunch of ANBU stopped running. They all turned around when they felt the menacing demonic chakra, and all they saw was a big red beam shooting towards the sky.'on no, Kushina/The kyuubi!' were all they thought and picked up the pace even more.
'Kushina my love' was Minato's thoughts as he felt his feelings swirling around like a storm. He felt great sadness at the thought of his wife dying.'how could this have gone so wrong'. He pierced the strange man with a death glare. He was going to make this man pay dearly. But he had to stay calm, this was one very dangerous person. As Minato stood there calculating the situation he saw his son suddenly teleport to Kushina's side. He never saw his son use that amount of speed before. 'Fast' Minato thought. Same as the strange man who was shocked at the small shinobi.
Few seconds before.
Naruto saw the beam of chakra leaving his mom's body. He knew the seal had been destroyed and when the bijuu was fully released he knew his mom wouldn't survive. 'Mom' was Naruto's only thought. Something snapped inside of him. He felt nothing, the only thing he felt was calm and focused and the need to save his mother. His thoughts now had one direction, and it was to save his mom. He rushed to his mothers side and ignored the godly amount of chakra leaving her body. He did not really know what he was doing, it felt like his body was on autopilot. He laid his hand on his mothers stomach ignoring the chakra burns he got from the kyuubi's chakra. And started to channel as much of his chakra he could into Kushina.
'What Is this feeling from my son's chakra?" Kushina thought shocked as she felt her body being rejuvenated by the seconds. She felt stronger than she could remember ever feeling.
'What the hell? That's healing chakra. And very potent at that. It's almost just like Hashirama's rejuvenation ability'. Minato thought. Could Kushina actually survive? He had to give his son all the time he could. And he prepared to engage the strange Uchiha.
The mystery man was shocked at the small boy's display. 'What potent chakra! He could be a problem in the future if left alive' . He was just going to stop the small boy when he felt a strong grip on his throat and then he disappeared.
As soon as the mystery man was teleported away with Minato the last chakra of the kyuubi left Kushina.
She looked up at her son and he looked like he was in an almost trance-like state still pushing a large amount of chakra into her system. She was sure that death had been waiting for her, but now she could feel her body becoming stronger and stronger as her son used his chakra to heal her. 'How is this possible, it's like Hashirama's ability to regenerate' she thought.
Finally Naruto stopped his flow of chakra and panted out. Kushina looked at him with a smile, "Naruto!" she said, lost for words. Naruto just looked at her "Hi mom, can't let you die now can i?" He gave her a smile then hugged his mother and started sobbing as he buried himself into her right shoulder.
"It's okay Naruto, I'm here now. I'm fine. Thank you" She said as she stroked Naruto along his back to calm him down.
"I thought you were going to die and something snapped inside. I'm not even sure what I was doing" Naruto said between sobs.
Their small reunion was cut short by a tremendous and vicious growl that must have been heard by all in fire country. Both mother and son snapped their heads towards the growl and saw the big demonic form of the Kyuubi standing there in all its glory. It was just a few hundred meters away from where they were sitting on the ground. The killing intent was almost suffocating.
They both looked at each other, no words had to be spoken as they both knew what needed to be done. And they sprung into action.
Kushina was relieved her body worked again, and she even felt stronger than ever before. She wasted no time and made some quick hand seals and shouted "Hidden jutsu - Adamantine Sealing Chains". Big chains glowing with orange-ish color shot out from Kushina's back at an impressive speed. The chains flew in a straight path towards the kyuubi and when they were close they wrapped themself around the big demon fox and bound him in place. The kyuubi trashed violently against Kushina's chains.
Naruto wasted no time being impressed with his mother as he never saw her use her adamantine chains before. He rushed straight towards the bound kyuubi as he knew he had just a small window, he intended to suppress the bijuu's chakra. But he had to hurry, he saw his mother struggling and knew she would not hold him for long.
As Naruto ran he made a long series of hand seals and when he was close to the kyuubi he shouted "Hokage-Shiki Jijun Jutsu - Kakuan Nitten Suishu"and he placed his right hand on kyuubi's body made of just dense chakra.
The kyuubi made a mighty snarl and tried to break the chains. Naruto noticed his technique working, and it filled him with hope. Just then he heard something hard snap and he looked up towards the massive beast. He saw his mother's chains starting to break apart from the massive power the demon possessed. 'Oh shit' was Naruto's only thought as just a second later something massive hit him all over his small body and he flew away hundreds of meters into the forest, disappearing from Kushina's view.
"NARUTOOO!" Kushina screamed after her son in horror. She just witnessed one of kyuubi's massive tails smash into Naruto, sending him flying into the forest. She was livid, she thought her son died just now. She held her head with both of her hands and just screamed out all the pain she felt. She tried to renew her effort to bind the beast with her chains but noticed it was futile. She just lost her first born son. And she broke down and cried uncontrollably as her last chains fell off the kyuubi.
"Kushina-sama!" she heard a shout behind her. She wiped away her tears and turned around. There stood Jiraiya, Hiruzen and Kakashi with a few ANBU as well. They all ran towards her. "What happened, Kushina? Where are Minato and Naruto?" Jiraiya asked as he did not see either of them here.'Did Minato not teleport them to kushina?' he wondered.
They could all see that Kushina did everything to not break down then and there and answered "Minato used his hiraishin to teleport away with the masked man" she told them. "And Naruto was…" She could not finish the sentence as she looked down and started to hyperventilate.
"What Kushina? What happened to Naruto? Where is he?" Jiraiya pressed Kushina as he was starting to get a really bad feeling. She did not answer. He grabbed her shoulders and shook her to snap her out of her panic. "WHERE IS NARUTO!" Jiraiya yelled towards kushina. He knew she was hurting, but he needed her to answer him.
She looked up towards Jiraiya and the rest with bloodshot eyes "His is dead!" she managed to get out. "The Kyuubi killed my son!" and she fell face first on the ground unconscious.
'Dead?' they all thought in horror. This can't be, he was not supposed to die here today.
They were all interrupted in their thoughts by the kyuubi growling and getting ready to destroy everything they hold dear. Kyuubi had now regaind all its strength and was towering over them like a big mountain ready to crush them all.
"Get ready" Hiruzen said and got in a battle stance. They had to do everything they could to stop the kyuubi from reaching the village. At Least until Minato could seal it again. No one was able to seal the beast except for the Yondaime or maybe Kushina, but she was out for now.
Kyuubi noticed the new people down by his previous jailor, he turned towards them and snarled. He lashed out with all his tails at once towards them. Intending to crush everyone in one mighty smash. All those down by Kushina did not expect such an attack and did not really have any defense for it, all they could do was try to run away from the impact. Jiraiya grabbed hold of Kushina as he prepared to shunshin out of there. "Everyone take cover, fast!" Jiraiya said.
Some of the ANBU were not fast enough and saw the tails closing in thinking this was it. The rest now stood a hundred meters away from the soon to be impact zone. They all saw the tails closing in, intending to crush those poor ANBU.
The tails suddenly stopped moving towards them and the whole form of the kyuubi was forcefully smashed towards the ground. Making a sound resembling hundreds of explosive tags. The whole place was covered with smoke and debris.
'What the hell just happened to the kyuubi' everyone thought in shock and confusion. They all got their answers as the smoke cleared to reveal the kyuubi laying there in front of them snarling something crazy with what looked like big vines covering its whole body.
"That's.." One of the ANBU started but could not even finish
Jiraiya,Hiruzen and Kakashi all smiled "That's right Gaki! Pound his ass to the ground!" Jiraiya yelled out towards the figure standing beside the struggling kyuubi.
There beside the kyuubi stood Naruto in all his glory. He took a massive hit before, but was fast enough to coat his body in a protective layer of chakra to lessen the hit.
To all the adults it looked like Naruto was glowing with green chakra. 'Is he using sage mode?' Jiraiya wondered.
Naruto turned around towards the adults and they all saw strange black markings on his face and a red color around his eyes.'Definitely sage mode. But how?' Jiraiya thought. Then Naruto shouted "You guys should get away from here and take my mother to safety. I will handle the kyuubi" He said calmly. "Also, i think my father is fighting that other guy, you should find him and help him out".
Hiruzen was shocked but also proud. He felt nostalgic at the moment as watching Naruto brought back memories of one of his late sensei's Hashirama Senju. 'You remind me so much of him, young Naruto' the third hokage thought with a smile on his face despite the situation.
"What are you saying Naruto? Are you crazy?" Jiraiya yelled out. "You can't do this alone, we will help you out" he said as he started to move towards Naruto.
"Stop!" Naruto said with an authority in his voice they never heard before. "Leave now while you still have time. Get my mother to safety and find my father! NOW LEAVE!". He yelled out the last part.
"You can't possibly think we are going to leave you! A child to fight the kyuubi himself?" Jiraiya was getting annoyed and pleaded with his godson. "Think about this for a second Naruto"
Jiraiya got a look from Naruto, his eyes were sad but confident. There was a fire in those eyes. "Please Jiraiya" Naruto said in a low tone to his godfather.
Jiraiya felt a hand on his shoulder and looked at who it was. "He will be alright Jiraiya-sama, let's put our trust in Naruto" Kakashi said as he smiled at the hermit.
"What are you planning to do Naruto-kun" Hiruzen inquired.
"I plan on sealing the kyuubi into myself. I made my own seal, designed after my mom's" he looked towards his mothers unconscious form. "This is the only way, and i'm the most suited person to become its new jinchuriki" He looked towards Jiraiya and said "You know this to be true".
Jiraiya could not find words to counter Naruto's claims. He had a strong body and spirit. He knows mokuton and sealing. He was an Uzumaki. There was no better person to hold the kyuubi. He looked towards Naruto with sad eyes and said "Im sorry Naruto it had to come to this"
"Don't be sorry," Naruto said camly. "Just hurry up and find dad, now leave"
"Be careful Naruto, and come back alive. Otherwise your mother will kill me" Jiraiya said and then the group left Naruto there in the woods alone with the kyuubi.
Naruto stood by the kyuubi's head that was being pressed hard towards the ground by Naruto's vines. 'Never thought sage mode would feel this great' he mused as he flexed his fist like he was testing his own powers. He looked down and locked his gaze towards one of Kyuubi's eyes. "Just you and me now, lord kyuubi" Naruto said in a calm voice. The kyuubi trashed and tried to break the vines. "Some puny little child can't wish to hold me for long" the great fox said in a menacing voice. Then Naruto noticed his vines starting to break slowly. "See?. Im going to devour you child!" The kyuubi said and made a mighty roar as all the vines pulverized as the kyuubi expelled big quantities of chakra from his body.
Naruto jumped away from the exploding chakra and wasted no time going through a set of hand seals 'lets try this out then' and shouted "Mokuton: Mokujin no Jutsu". He was glad he happend to learn sage mode on the fly as this technique required a lot of chakra. And he pumped the technique full of natural energy.
From the ground something grew at an alarming pace. Soon the whole village could see a giganteus humanoid tree creature standing there in the forest beside the great kyuubi. The creature wasted no time. And as soon as it was summoned by Naruto it started to assault and battle with the kyuubi.
Naruto then made one hand seal and shouted "kage bunshin no jutsu" and summoned 3 copies of himself. "Spread out, you know what to do". The copies rushed off and formed a box-like pattern around the kyuubi.
'NOW!' the original Naruto thought the command and his copies obeyed. All around the kyuubi wooden pillars shot upwards hundreds of meters and then started to bend around the beast to form some sort of dome.
"I WILL NOT BE SEALED AGAIN!" The kyuubi roared out towards Naruto as it tried to break the bindings. Naruto ignored the great beast's thrashing and walked towards the kyuubi again.
'Good thing I modified the Eight Trigrams Sealing Method. Otherwise I could never do this alone' Naruto thought as he walked calmly towards the kyuubi to finish this.
He was now standing in front of one of kyuubi's big eyes once again. Kyuubi just glared at him, he could not move an inch.'is this the child father talked about?' the kyuubi thought as he could not help but admire the strength of this small human.
Naruto did not bother wasting time saying anything to the beast and just went through a long series of hand seals. "Mokuton: Eight Trigrams Sealing Method" he whispered as several hands made of wood shot out from his stomach, grabbing hold of kyuubi's fur. The fox could feel his power diminish and saw a stream of his chakra floating into the small human at an alarming speed.
Now there was almost nothing left, the kyuubi was now the size of a small house instead of a mountain. Naruto made one last pull on the fox's chakra and the kyuubi was gone. He had successfully sealed the beast inside of himself. The pillars and the big humanoid creature all disappeared and Naruto let out a breath. 'That was much easier than I thought it would be. Considering'.
He could feel the kyuubi inside of him. With his modified mokuton sealing method, the fox would not have any power or influence over him. That was the idea at least.
He looked around the place where he stood and saw the total destruction of the forest. It was a good thing it didn't reach the village he thought. 'I better go and find dad and check up on mom and my new siblings' He thought. He expanded his senses, he was a really good sensor after all. It took a little while but he found his dad's signature, but I was very weak. 'He must be hurt. I can sense Jiraiya, Hiruzen and Kakashi and a few more around him. They must have found dad' He thought. And then he sped away towards his father faster than ever before.
He never noticed a plantlike creature that had been watching him. 'This could prove troublesome for our future plans. I need to inform the leader' and the strange creature was gone.
It took Naruto just under a minute to reach his destination as it was rather close. What he noticed first was a semi-circle of people surrounding someone. He logically knew who the person that the people surrounded was. His mind tried to ignore logical thinking at the moment, but then he saw his fathers iconic cloak with flames and he could not deny reality any longer and he felt dread building up inside of him.
One of the people turned around, noticing Naruto's presence. "Naruto-boy" Hiruzen said in a low voice. He gave Naruto a sad look. Naruto rushed forward and threw himself on top of the hokage. "Dad?" he asked in a low voice watching his fathers still face. "Dad?" he asked again, shaking his father. He got no answer. He started pounding his fists against his fathers chest, trying to somehow wake him up as he screamed.
Everyone was watching Naruto trying to wake up his dead father. It crushed everyone's spirit to see the small boy desperately trying to wake his father. He continued to scream and hit his father as tears streamed from his eyes. 'He is not dead! I can feel him! He can't be dead!. He started to desperately channel chakra into his fathers body to heal him, to restore him to life but nothing happened. So he just pushed more chakra. "WAKE UP GOD DAMMIT!" he screamed almost in rage as his father did not respond to him.
In his grief he did not notice he started to leak some demonic chakra. And that alerted all those nearby.'Is his seal breaking already? This is really bad' was almost everyone's thoughts.
"That's enough Naruto-kun. He's gone. I'm sorry" Jiraiya said as he put a hand on Naruto's shoulder to comfort him. Naruto just slapped his hand away and glared at Jiraiya with rage in his eyes. That look made Jiraiya take a step back. "He is NOT dead!" Naruto spat out. "I can still save him! I must!" he continued.
"Naruto-boy, I'm sorry but Jiraiya is right. Your father truly is gone. I'm so very sorry" Hiruzen tried to get the boy to see reason. "We can all feel his lifeforce fading, it will be gone in just a few seconds. There is nothing you can do son". Hiruzin said as his heart broke at seeing the realization in Naruto's eyes.
Naruto stopped his flow of chakra and just hung his head. He sat there for a while and no one said anything and just gave the boy some time with his father.
Naruto then slowly stood up. Head still hung low and his fists were clenched. He looked up towards the group of people. Everyone almost recoiled at Naruto's expression. His eyes were bloodshot and had small slits going through them. Around his eyes were red markings indicating he was in sage mode, and he had strange markings around his face. But the most noticeable feature was the pure rage on his face and the tears streaming from his eyes.
"Where is he?" Naruto asked in a distorted voice, it almost sounded demonic.
Everyone was really nervous about Naruto's mental state at the moment. And they did not really know how to calm him down.
Kakashi stepped towards him and said "He was already gone when we got here. We will find him Naruto. But you have to calm down"
"You are leaking demonic chakra, Naruto. Try do calm down before you do something stupid. You have to check up on your mother and siblings right? Jiraiya said as he was trying to calm the raging Naruto down.
They could feel Naruto's chakra building up more and more and he turned around looking into the forest. "I will find and crush that man!!" he snarled to no one in particular with so much venom in his voice they could almost see it dripping from his mouth. And then he just shot off into the forest, disappearing before anyone could react.
"Dammit, he is not himself right now! We have to go after him" Jiraiya said, panicking as he looked towards the others.
"Kakashi, you and Jiraiya follow Naruto and make sure he does nothing stupid" Hiruzen said as he signed at the whole situation. Konoha suffered a major loss this day. But Naruto just lost his father. There is no telling what will become of this. "I will go and inform the shinobi-council of everything that happened and then i will see Kushina and explain everything" Hiruzen said in a sad voice. "Hurry now before he gets to far" he added.
Kakashi and Jiraiya looked at Hiruzen and nodded, then they were off chasing a crazed and heartbroken Naruto.
Hiruzen just stood there for a while and looked out into the forest. 'Bring him back. Kushina needs him now more than ever' he thought sadly. He looked towards his predecessor and signed. 'I should be the one laying there. I'm sorry i was not faster Minato-boy'.
He turned towards the ANBU "Let's get back to the village. I will carry Minato's body" he said as he then picked up the hokages dead body and started to make their way back to the village.
Inside the village in one of the hospitals dedicated to shinbi's, Kushina just woke up. She sat straight up wondering what happened. Then her memories returned like a tsunami hitting her face and she screamed out "NARUTO!" in panic. She heard screams beside her and turned around. "My babies!" she cried out and picked up both her newborns and almost crushed them with her motherly hug.
Then the door shot open "Kushina-sama! I heard screams, are you alright?" a nurse came rushing in and asked. She saw Kushina sitting there with both her newborns in her arms and she was crying. "My baby boy. I lost my baby boy!" she cried out in despair.
"What do you mean Kushina-sama? You mean Naruto-sama?" The nurse asked, confused.
"The kyuubi killed my son! I saw it with my own eyes!" she cried out and again started to hyperventilate as she got a tight feeling in her chest.
"I'm not so sure Kushina-sama. Someone fought the Kyuubi and then the fox just seemed to disappear out of nowhere" The nurse said. Kushina's head snapped towards the nurse's direction, almost breaking her neck. "What did you say?" Kushina blurted out in panic, now a little hopeful.
"I mean I saw some strange tree-like creature holding the kyuubi down. Then a lot of pillars made of wood rose up around the beast, then it was gone" she told Kushina. Now Kushina looked even more hopeful. "This is something only Naruto could do right? With Mokuton I mean" the nurse added.
"YES! That must have been Naruto. But where is he now then?" She was relieved but still worried. If that is true, why are her husband and Naruto not here? And she started to get this bad feeling that something was not right.
"They may just be helping around the village. The kyuubi never made it to the village, but the people are afraid and in an uproar" The nurse told Kushina. "Yes that must be it, they will probably be her any moment then" Kushina said as she tried to reassure herself. The bad feeling never left thought.
Kushina started to talk to her babies and the nurse left after a little while.
A while later there was a knock on her door. "May I come in Kushina-san?" She heard Hiruzen's voice call out behind the door.
"Yes of course, come in" She called out to him.
As soon as he entered her room she could tell from his expression that something was seriously wrong. "What's wrong Hiruzen? Why are you looking so gloomy?" she asked as her worry started to build up.
Hiruzen walked up and sat beside her and he looked at her babies and gave her a sad smile. Then he signed and took one of her hands and held it with both of his. He looked straight in her eyes "Im sorry kushina-chan, but Minato is gone". That statement crushed Kushina's whole world. She could not believe it and janked her hand away from Hiruzen's. "Why would you say something like that!" She told him a bit forced as deep down she knew he was telling the truth. "That's not true! You are lying! Why are you lying to me?!" She yelled at him trying to ignore the fact.
"I'm sorry Kushina-chan, but it is the truth" this was hard for his old hearth. To see someone he loved in so much pain. Kushina was like a daughter to him. And then she lost it and just buried herself in Hiruzen's embrace and cried her heart out.
After a little while she sat straight again and asked "What about my son? Where is Naruto?"
Hiruzen signed again as he looked out the window. "He lost himself when he saw Minato-boy's body. I have never seen such rage before. He took after your husbands murderer" he said as he saw the full on panic return on Kushina's face. "I sent Kakashi and Jiraiya after him. He will come back. I promise you" he tried to reassure the grieving widow.
"WHAAAAT!" was Kushina's only response as she again passed out from an overload of emotions.
Hiruzen just watched her laying there looking peaceful in her unconscious state. Then he picked up the babies and started to soothe their crying and put them in the crib beside their mothers bed. 'You better come back Naruto, your mother needs you' he thought as he then left the hospital.
Miles away from konoha in the forest somewhere in firecountry.
Jiraiya and Kakashi were running at full speed. Following Naruto was not hard as he shined like a big flaming torch to their senses. 'He is expanding so much chakra continuously in his rage induced state. If he does not find the man soon, he will just pass out from exhaustion' Jiraiya thought with a frown. 'This is good thought, we will grab him when he has passed out. There is no reasoning with him when he is like this".
