My policies, my plans saved lives. It's true that no one liked rationing and honestly it wasn't needed in the US, France, Australia, Canada, and Brazil. America could have survived the war without rationing but it would have resulted in the deaths of million upon millions of people. Pre-rationing you had little bits of insanity like super sizing, and ever increasing, ever insane portion sizes. There was an obesity epidemic in the United States, while increasing numbers of people starved to death.
That bothered me and the worst part of that? It didn't need to be that way, we had more then enough food to feed everyone on earth. No child had to go hungry, no one had to starve to death, I could fix this, I had a plan, but no one wanted to implement it. Who cared if some kids in the Third world died, right? Who cared if some kids in the ghetto died. It was a frustrating time for me, I could fix so much and I was stuck doing these stupid, meaningless plans for the PRT and then one day I get the call. The war's going to be a long one, we need everybody we can get and we can't afford to have malnourished people on the frontlines.
I sat down and they told me that I could finally implement it, finally fix this world, finally cure world hunger. The government and the UN they were on board. It all seemed so exciting, but it wasn't going to be easy and as the war dragged on it just got harder and harder. Convincing people to actually feed the Palestinians? Yeah I was told that they were on their own. I was able to contact Amir and I worked behind the scenes. The two of us were able to save a lot of people, but no one's going to care about that. No one cares about the lives I saved, it's all grumbling about how they weren't able to supersize their food, that their little princess' birthday cake was too small.
Then of course there were the complaints about the tiered system, that it was unfair, well of course it was unfair, it was designed to be unfair! The system was desgined to feed the entire planet, including the ever growing offworld colionies, while making sure that society stayed stable. We ran the numbers, giving refugees crappier rations then the locals actually made things more stable.
Why? Because people are petty and if you're suffering and the government gives some newcomer everything you're getting, well people get pissed, and people were already unhappy as is. On top of that I had to compensate people who did vital war work and make sure the system functioned, got paid for it. That's why you could buy your way to better rations during the war, it wasn't done to hurt little Suzie's birthday cake, it was done to make sure people would live. I mean I can't understate this fact, people were starving to death.
So the rationing system wasn't loved back home but I had more challages going on. Those ever growing offworld colonles with millions of people, not self-sufficient in food. The ever growing army of refugees, the collapse of entire countries, bandits, revolutionaries, terrorists, supervillains, natural disasters and the Endbringers destroying more and more cities. As the system got worse and worse my job got harder and harder, because every time a country collapsed or had a revolution it was not successfully producing enough of it's food, which meant even more reasources had to be deployed.
The fact that the average american could only have ice cream at home once a month pales in comparison. I mean if you really wanted ice cream you could go to a restaurant, which by the way was a loophole that made my job ten times harder then it needed to be, but at the end of the day with my limited reasources, with my limited powers, the public outcry, and everything going to merry hell, some extra ice cream really didn't matter. My plan worked for the most part, there were failures but during rationing 95% of the human race didn't go hungry.
They may have been forced to eat food that was unappetising, they may have not had what they wanted, but they got what they needed. I may not be a loved figure in world history, no doubt when I'm gone my name will be forgotten but I don't have any regrets about what I did during the war. I can look myself in the mirror, how many people can say the same?
