Amy
I looked at my phone.
"Fuck."
I sighed and went to the teacher.
"Class is in session and..."
I opened the phone and let her talk to the man on the other end, then I flashed the gold badge. She sighed.
"National security?"
"Yep, it's the war."
She sighed and waved me off, I went to the gates of the school and waited for the marines to pick me up. I wondered why they didn't use the army but I didn't want to deal with interservice drama.
"Miss, um..."
"Panacea's fine, Pam if you want to shorten it, or Amy. What happened?"
"A, um thing happened."
I wish I had my juice box.
"A thing always happens, that's what things do."
I went into the personal carrier and mopped, time for a nice trip to the VA hospital were I would clear up the latest disaster.
"What happeened?"
"Well there was some tinkertech and, um an accident and um...yeah."
New guy, what did the marines call them, shoe's, shocks, pants.
"Boot?"
That earned me laughs from the more experienced marines.
"See even the god damned civilian can see you're a boot."
I turned my head.
"I did the long ten, the hard 20, and the dirty 30."
I stared at the man and he looked away.
"Oh... yeah can't really call you that can I, it's a fucked up world, isnt it?"
We stopped at the VA where I got to listen to the screaming of the men, I looked at the damage.
"I'm going to need hamburger, bone and other materials."
...
"UNCOOKED!"
I needed some protein to work with, I went to the worse cases first, the people who would die if I didn't get there. The VA doctors by now knew enough to help, or at least stay out of my way. By the time lunch time got around it was over. I felt tired and exhausted, I washed my hands and tried to get the blood off.
"Oh, we have your checks."
I fucking hate the VA, seriously everyone else can do electronic billing. Ugh I was going to get stuck putting in everyone's checks again. I looked at the marines.
"I'm going to need a ride to the bank."
They nodded and I looked at the checks, mom, dad, Vicky, everyone else. The UN just deposited it all in our bank but I had to do this myself again because some incompetent fuck couldn't be bothered to do his job.
I stared outside the bulletproof glass and metallic shutters, at least this day couldn't get any worse, right?
