Sick on Berk
It was a good day on Berk, the weather was perfect for a flight, the dragons were behaving and the Outcasts haven't attack for a while
That afternoon Gobber was checking on Thunder's teeth while Blake repaired a sword
"There it is" Gobber said before pulling out a piece of mutton out of Thunder's teeth "You didn't chew well your food, huh?"
When Blake heard this, he stopped his work and glared at his dragon "Thunder, how many times I've told you to chew your food?" Blake scolded Thunder who looked away from his rider angrily
"Sorry for making you check his teeth" Blake apologized "It's just that when I give him mutton for dinner, he eats it really fast and he barely chews it"
"It's okay, it's my job after all" Gobber said walking towards Blake who finished to repair the sword "I'm the one who should be thanking you for helping me to repair that sword"
"No problem" Blake said but then he started to cough violently
"Woah, are you okay?" Gobber asked
"Yes, I just felt something on my throat for a second" Blake explained rubbing his throat but his voice sounded a bit hoarse
"Are you sure?" Gobber asked rising an eyebrow before placing his hand on Blake's forehead "You're hot, I think that you have a fever"
Then Blake cleared his throat before talking "What are you talking about? I don't have a fever, now if you excuse me, I'm going to the academy, Hiccup asked me to meet him at the academy along with Astrid"
Before Gobber could answer, Blake got on Thunder's back and flew away
Moments later Blake and Thunder arrived at the academy, Hiccup and Toothless were waiting for them there along with Astrid and Stormfly
"Hey Blake" Hiccup said when he saw them enter
"Hey, Blake" Astrid said
"Hi, Hiccup. Hi, Astrid" Blake said getting off Thunder's back "Why did you want me to meet us here?"
"Well, I need your help to test my shield" Hiccup said showing Blake his shield
"You finally finished it?" Blake asked walking towards Hiccup
"Sort of, it still needs some adjustments" Hiccup said but then a metal rim came out of his shield "See?"
"Let me guess, you want us to attack you to see how useful it could be in combat?" Blake asked taking a sword
"And also see where does it need the adjustments?" Astrid asked preparing her axe
"Exactly" Hiccup said
"Very well, I'm ready" Astrid said
"Me too" Blake said but he started cough again
"Are you feeling okay?" Hiccup asked
"Yes, I'm fine" Blake said but his voice sounded hoarse again
Before Hiccup could say anything, Blake charged at him so he protected himself with his shield
Then Hiccup pushed Blake back and used his hook and cable trying to trap Blake but he dodged it, then Astrid tried to take Hiccup by surprise, however, Hiccup noticed her and dodged her attacks
They continued to fight for ten minutes but Blake coughed multiple times, he was panting for air and he even sneezed a few times
"Blake, you don't look so good, I think it's better if we stop" Hiccup said
"No, I can continue" Blake said getting ready to attack Hiccup one more time but he started to feel dizzy so he shook his head trying to snap out of it but it only made it worse
Hiccup and Astrid immediately realized what was happening so they ran towards Blake just it time before he fainted, since Astrid was closer to Blake, she caught him
"Blake! Blake!" Astrid yelled trying to wake Blake up as Thunder ran towards her worried for his rider
Then Astrid placed her hand on Blake's forehead "He's burning up in fever" Astrid said
"Let's take him to Gothi" Hiccup said
An hour later, Blake started to woke up but his vision was blurry so he saw four human figures and he was also able to hear them talking but he wasn't able to understand what they were saying
"What happened?" Blake asked "Where am I?"
"He's waking up" one of the figures said
When Blake recovered his sight, he realized that he was lying on a bed in Gothi's house with Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs and Gothi looking at him
"Huh, what happened?" Blake asked again as he sat on the bed
"You passed out while we were training" Astrid explained "We brought you to Gothi's house"
When Astrid stopped talking, Gothi walked towards Blake and analyzed him before dropping some sand on the ground and use it to write something with her staff
"What is she saying?" Hiccup asked
"She says that Blake has all of the symptoms of a cold" Fishlegs said
"How does she know that?" Blake asked confused
"She checked you while you were unconscious" Hiccup explained "And since it took you an hour to wake, we brought Fishlegs to translate Gothi's writing"
Then Gothi erased her previous writing in order to write something new "She's asking: for how long you're been feeling like this?" Fishlegs said
"Uh… do I really have to answer that?" Blake asked nervously making Gothi glare at him
"Yes, you have to" Astrid said
"Okay fine, I've been feeling like this for… three days" Blake confessed
"Three days!" Hiccup, Astrid and Fishlegs said
"Why didn't you say anything?" Fishlegs asked
"Well, I thought that it wasn't a big deal and that it would eventually pass, that's why I hid it" Blake explained as he lied back down on the bed
"For how long you were planning to hide it?" Hiccup asked
"For as long as I could, actually. Every time I got sick on Outcast Island, I hid it from Alvin from as long as I could, I guess that some things never change, huh?" Blake coughed
After that, Blake got up and walked outside where the dragons were waiting
When Thunder saw his rider, he immediately ran towards him, Blake also noticed that it was already evening
"Hey, Thunder" Blake said with a hoarse voice, then Blake got on his dragon's back but Gothi hit him with her staff
"Ouch! What did I do?" Blake asked rubbing the back of his head as Gothi wrote something, when Blake read what Gothi wrote, he groaned annoyed and disappointed
"What did she say?" Astrid asked
"She said that I shouldn't fly for a while, the cold air could make my cold worse" Blake said getting off Thunder's back before sneezing, then Gothi gave him a mug with some medicine "And I have to come to see her once a day in order to drink this"
Blake took the mug and drank all the medicine in one gulp, however, when he finished, he almost threw up for the disgusting taste
"This is really going to help make me feel better?" Blake asked looking at Gothi who only nodded, then she wrote something else but Blake was already walking away so he didn't notice
"Gothi says that if he feels worse, we should tell her so she can give us something more effective for Blake" Fishlegs said
"So let's keep an eye on him" Hiccup said
Minutes later Blake was walking towards the forge accompanied by Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs and the dragons
"Guys, I appreciate that you want to make sure that I arrive safety, but you don't have to follow me all the way" Blake said "This is not the first time I've got sick"
"But it is your first time being sick on Berk" Hiccup said
"Good point but Thunder will be with me, and it would be a good chance to keep an eye on him" Blake coughed
"Why would you need to keep and eye on him when he's the one who should keep an eye on you?" Fishlegs asked
"Because, he tends to be really protective of me especially when he thinks that something's wrong with me" Blake explained "And Thunder has never saw me sick so I don't know how he'll react"
Then a Terrible Terror flew near them making Thunder growl at it so the Terror flew away, Thunder looked proud of himself but it didn't take him long to realize that the teens were looking at him
"Forget what I just said, I already know how he'll react" Blake said "Thunder, we've been through this, do I seriously need to talk it with you again?"
Thunder only looked at the ground ashamed
"Now that I think about this, we could write something about the Skrill's protectiveness to their friends in the book of dragons" Blake said
"We could do that when you're better" Astrid said as they all continued their way
At the forge, Gobber was finishing to check a Nadder's teeth but then he heard someone coughing so he turned around and saw how the teens were approaching
"So, I was right, you have a fever, huh?" Gobber asked looking at Blake
"Actually, he has a cold" Fishlegs said "And he's been feeling like this for three days"
"Why you didn't say anything?" Gobber asked
"Let's just say that it's a bad habit that I have" Blake explained "If you don't mind, I'll be in my room"
"Go ahead" Goober said
Then Blake walked into his room and lay down on his bed before going into a peaceful sleep
The next morning, Gobber walked in to Blake's room who was still asleep
"Blake" Gobber said shaking Blake a little
"Wha-?" Blake said waking up a bit confused "Dad, did something happen? And, where's Thunder?"
(A/n: yes, Blake still calls Gobber "dad" but it's more of a pet name, I write this because I'm not sure if I explained it well, anyway, let's continue)
"Everything is okay, and your dragon left a few minutes ago" Gobber explained "Oh, before I forgot, I came to give you this"
Gobber gave Blake a plate with some soup "It's my yak noodle soup" Gobber said
"Thanks" Blake said taking the soup, he started to eat as Gobber walked away "Hey, just one more thing, for how long was I asleep?"
"For a very long time, in fact, it's morning already" Gobber said
"Oh… I guess than I was really tired" Blake joked before coughing
Gobber left Blake's room so he could eat, however when he finished, something made click on Blake's mind
"Oh no, I forgot to feed Thunder" he said
Blake was able to sneak up out of the forge and started to look for his dragon
"Thunder! Thunder!" Blake called with no luck "Were could he be?"
"Blake?" a voice asked
Blake looked where the voice came and saw Fishlegs and Meatlug "What are you doing here? You should be on bed" Fishlegs said
"Fishlegs, good thing that you're here" Blake coughed walking towards them "Have you seen Thunder? I forgot to feed him"
"Actually, me and Meatlug were on our way to get him something to eat" Fishlegs said
"Wait what?" Blake asked confused
"We saw him trying to steal some fish I told him that we'll get him something to eat" Fishlegs explained
"Thank you, Fishlegs" Blake said gratefully "I owe you one"
"It's okay, but you should go back to bed, you don't look so good" Fishlegs said
"And I don't feel good either" Blake said pacing a hand on his forehead "I think that my fever is getting worse"
"Should I go get Gothi?" Fishlegs asked
"It won't be necessary" Blake said "I'll just go back a lie down"
Hours later Hiccup and Astrid went to the forge in order see how Blake was feeling, when they walked into the room, he saw that Thunder was looking at his rider worriedly
"Thunder? What's wrong?" Astrid asked, said dragon gestured at Blake so Hiccup and Astrid walked towards him
"Blake?" Hiccup called before noticing that Blake was shivering a lot "What's wrong?"
"I-it's… s-so… c-cold… i-in… h-here" Blake said
Hiccup and Astrid immediately realized what was going on "Hiccup, you go get the medicine, me and Thunder will stay here and keep and eye on him" Astrid said
Then Hiccup and Toothless got to Gothi's house "Gothi!" Hiccup said as he entered "Blake's fever got worse, can you give can you give me the more effective medicine?"
Gothi nodded and quickly prepared the medicine and pour it on a vase and give it to Hiccup "Thanks, Gothi" he said before walking out of the house and getting on Toothless' back
When they returned, Astrid helped Blake to sit on his bed "What's… going… on?" Blake asked weakly
"Hey, it's okay, just drink this" Hiccup said giving Blake the medicine
"What was that?" Blake asked when he finished
"It was a more effective medicine than Gothi gave me" Hiccup explained
"I see, thanks for giving it to me but you two shouldn't be here, I don't want to infect you" Blake coughed
"It's okay, we wanted to see how you were feeling or needed something" Astrid said
"And apparently you really needed help" Hiccup said
"Yeah" Blake admitted "Sorry for making you guys worry"
Then Thunder grunted to get Blake's attention "Sorry for making you worry too" Blake said
An hour later Hiccup and Astrid left Blake alone who fell asleep one more time leaving Thunder in charge of watching over him
The next day Blake woke up feeling much better compared in how he felt yesterday
"Wow, I don't know what had that medicine that Hiccup gave me but I feel I a little better" Blake said stretching a bit, then Gobber entered the room
"Hey, Blake. How are you feeling?" Gobber asked
"I feel a little better" Blake said "And my voice doesn't sound hoarse anymore so I guess that I'll be better soon"
Moments later Blake and Thunder were going to see Gothi so Blake could drink his usual medicine, however, he noticed that someone was following him
"Ruff, Tuff, I know that you two are following me" Blake said
"Oh, come on, how did you realized that we were following you?" Tuffnut asked coming out of his hiding spit which was a behind a cart with Ruffnut
"I'm sorry but you're not very stealthy" Blake said "Anyway, what were you doing following me?"
"We were making sure than your sickness is not that bad" Ruffnut said
"So you know that I'm sick, huh?" Blake asked
"Yes, and I'm afraid that I must say that it was nice knowing you" Tuffnut said
"What? Guys I might be sick but I'm not dying" Blake said before coughing
"Oh no, it's getting worse" Ruffnut said
Then an idea appeared on Blake's mind to make sure that the twins don't do anything, at least for now
"Yes Ruffnut, it's getting worse but not for me, it's getting worse for you" Blake fake coughed "Everyone that I infect will be deadly ill and you're the next"
With that the twins froze in fear "A-are you serious?" Ruffnut asked
"I'm serious" Blake said but before he could do anything, the twins ran off
"Okay… I think I went too far" Blake said
After Blake went with Gothi to drink his medicine, he went to the twins' house to explain that it was just a prank, the twins weren't mad by Blake's prank, instead they liked it
Sometime later Hiccup went to visit Blake like he did yesterday but this time Blake wasn't feeling so bad so they were able to hang out a bit
"Thanks for coming, Hiccup" Blake said "I was starting to get bored"
"I know how boring it can be, when I got sick, my dad forced me to stay in my room until I felt better" Hiccup said
"Why I'm not even surprised?" Blake said before his expression turned a bit serious
"Are you okay?" Hiccup asked
"Yes, it's just than with me being sick and being most of the time in my room, I've been thinking in giving myself a new last name" Blake said
"That doesn't sound like a bad idea because… well, you can't use Alvin's last name anymore" Hiccup said
"Yeah, and I don't remember what mother's last name is" Blake admitted rubbing the back of his head
"So, what do you have in mind?" Hiccup asked
"How about… Karlsen" Blake said
"Karlsen? I like it" Hiccup said
"I like it too, from now on, my name is Blake Karlsen" Blake said taking a deep breath
Now with a new last name, Blake is ready to fully accept his new life
A/n: Hi there, I'm here with the first original chapter for this story, I know that I've only published one chapter but I really wanted to write this and I also wanted show you guys the last name that I picked for Blake
I did an investigation and apparently Karlsen means "free man" originally, I was planning to show this on the last chapter of my previous story but I felt that it was too soon because in that same chapter Alvin disowned Blake so that's why I decided to show it now
For me, Karlsen is an excellent last name for Blake because now he feels completely free from anything related to his past, but I still want to know what do you think
