Jaune doesn't know how to feel about what happened and decides he has enough adventures for the day, going back to his hotel room, but still finding it to early to sleep, he opens up a Scroll video about self-defense, not having appreciated being at the mercy of the White Fang.
The video he lands on is a promotional advertisement for Signal Academy filmed by Taiyang where the man demonstrates the curriculum of the establishment when it comes to the absolute basics of combat.
"The most fundamental thing about fighting is mobility." The man explains. "Therefore, it is important to always be in a stance and posture where it is easy for you to lean or move in any way you desire."
The blond man takes up a stance his feet slightly apart and with his back heel hovering above the ground.
"You do not want your feet to be stuck or for you to be frozen, so keep your feet dynamic, with your preferred foot behind, like this. You also want your hands to be at about face level at all times on either side of your head, and once again with your dominant one behind."
Taiyang mimics leaning from imaginary shots.
In a ground fight, there are nine fundamental directions, with those being left, right, forward, backwards, the different diagonals between those axis and jumping vertically on the same spot.
The instructor demonstrates each movement by switching up his movement speed between each lean and rush, impressing Jaune with the fluidity in the man's body.
"The first few months of your training will be spent on an obstacle course, practicing these movements until they become second nature to you and you are comfortable enough in your body to judge the speed and distance required to chain them on a dime."
The instructor then suddenly jumps at the audience, spooking the cameraman in the process as it takes a few second for the video to stabilize.
"We will then work on your instincts, teaching you to never flinch or look away from danger." He says with a ferocious smile. "A scared fighter is a dead fighter."
He pauses for a moment, to denote the importance of the saying, but doesn't linger on the subject much and moves onto the next subject.
"At this point you should have the proficiency required to be able to dodge or escape from anyone of your fitness level, but not every hit can be avoided, and you need to learn to parry what you can and tank what you cannot."
To demonstrate his point, a black man suddenly appears into the picture and starts throwing kicks and punches at the instructor which he does a good effort at diverting to the side, evading and intercepting with his hands those he cannot.
"Evasion and defense are good ways to win you some time, but the only surefire way to keep you alive is to defeat your enemies, and for that you need to learn to hit fast and hard."
Qrow says grimly, demonstrating so by suddenly appearing in Taiyang's guard and kicking him hard, sending him flying out of frame.
"Punches, kicks, throws, there are numerous ways for you to inflict damage on your opponents, and for the following two years, you will spend your time trying out many to determine the best for you depending on your body size and weapon of choice."
Taiyang comes back into frame, dusting himself off but sporting no apparent injury.
"There are more classes, but this is the gist of what you will learn should you take our combat classes." The man stands to his coworker with pride. "As long as you practice what we teach, watch your surroundings and don't succumb to your emotions, Signal Academy guarantees you will have all the tools you need to defend yourself."
Jaune is awed by the video and feels the urge to try and join this establishment only for the disappointment sets in when the contact info shows Signal is for twelve years old teenagers thinking about becoming Huntsmen, and was a precursor to Beacon, rather than a competitor like he had hoped.
Still, he is satisfied to have learned as much as he did, though he doubts applying any of it will be as easy as he would like to believe. It's a start at least, and Jaune feels a pang of sadness at the thought that his father or sisters could have taught him any of this but had deliberately prevented him from doing so, despite becoming a Huntsman being his dream since childhood.
Jaune has a fitful sleep that night, with him turning around over and over, but before he knows it, morning is here and Jaune decides to leave the Hotel and sight-see a little in Vale.
Having learned his lesson from the last time he had been gawked at, Jaune wears a hat to hide his hair and the top of his face from the masses and makes his way through the busy streets shocked by the amount of people everywhere, him whom had so far only lived in a small settlement outside of the Kingdoms.
Jaune isn't used to the norms of the city and it isn't long before he finds himself in the seedier side of town, and Jaune shivers, when realizing there are much less people around, and from those, only faunus, and homeless people seem to be around.
A little on edge and somewhat scared, Jaune watches his surroundings like an eagle, only for him to walk by an alleyway to see a pink and brown-haired girl with an umbrella surrounded by a dozen thugs.
Before he could even think about it, Jaune's body moves on its own, with the boy picking up a trash bag from a nearby bin, and throwing it as hard as he can in the face of whom he assumes to be the leader.
"Leave her alone!" Jaune yells as loudly as he can, hoping to attract policemen, before taking the girl's hand in his and doing what he does best and swiftly running away.
Behind him, Jaune leaves a group of bewildered small-time gangsters thanking the gods for the miraculous boy that had just saved them from the murderous psychopath that had just ambushed them and had been on the brink of making them meet their makers.
At his side, however Neopolitan was feeling murderous. She didn't know who this blond dunce thought he was, interrupting her playtime, but she was certain that by the time she was done with him, he would wish he had never dared interrupt her fun, let alone grab her hand...
