Ever since Frieda's pregnancy had come to light, Historia never returned to see her in prison. All the documents that she needed to continue on with the plan, were delivered by either of the Ackermans. It made her feel hollow, to know that her only sister couldn't bear with the sight of the fallen queen, carrying the child of the criminal relationship Frieda had with Eren.
Actually, almost all visits had ceased whatsoever. The only people she saw were Mikasa and Levi and those two weren't exactly talkative. However, from either the commands she was receiving or chats she occasionally heard between her guards, the fallen queen could make out what was going on, in Paradis.
Wall Maria has been retaken. That much was obvious. One day, an order came for her to get rid of all the titans from within the area outside wall Rose. Without any trouble, she made them go outside the wall, sending the pure titans to the very outskirts of the island. They still served some purpose, being close to the coast and so the government seemed pleased with what she had done.
As the months passed her stomach would swell with the baby bump. It was slowly making Frieda both anxious and hopeful about the future. Using her power in this state proved to be harder than she initially thought, as extended exploitation of the coordinate correlated with physical strain.
Moreover, they seemed to hit some kind of a dead end with their plan. It turned out that the guns they were distributing among the rebels, were severely outdated. No matter what the special squad, stationed within Marley did, they couldn't get their hands on the newer, more technologically advanced equipment.
Given Armin Arlert's talent, theoretically, they shouldn't have any problem with reverse engineering the captured weapons. However, this and actually getting access to them, were two entirely different things. As of now, it seemed that the Marleyan fleet was avoiding the island, so without some kind of enclosure with the enemy, it was impossible to proceed any further.
Months were passing, and all those troubles floating around her head were making her feel extremely wary. With no one to talk to, about those, she was surely going crazy…
Yet, considering all that, Frieda wasn't exactly alone…
"You know, I still have no idea why you're here" the fallen queen spoke, looking at the blonde boy playing in the sand.
"Give it a little more time" Zeke responded with a smile, as he managed to build a decently looking castle.
Frieda looked beyond the boy, at the giant beam representing the coordinate. This realm had its own rules about time and space, so seeing something like this wasn't really that strange, in here. Supposedly, this was where the paths collided. The place where memories intertwined and meshed together. The place where it all began…
"I don't think that your presence here has any meaning" she spoke absentmindedly "I cannot fathom a reason for you to stay here. In fact, I am sure I can send you away at any time."
"You could try" the blonde boy responded "I am done with those castles anyway…"
Frieda looked at him with squinted eyes. He's been annoying her for long nine months and the perspective of him being gone, sounded extremely pleasing.
"Your pathetic attempt at changing me internally has failed" she said, gritting her teeth "I am my own woman. I can control who I am…"
"So, you've finally understood…?"
The fallen queen raised an eyebrow at that.
"Huh…?"
This was a surprise to her. Just what in the world was he talking about?
"You finally said it" Zeke expressed with a smile, while standing up "you are not actually a god."
It was true that her understanding about it changed during her stay in prison. All her worries, accumulated together with her regrets deeply transformed her person. But did she really change her mind about that?
Had she not merely assumed a role of a different kind of god…?
"Just go…" Frieda spoke, while raising her hand up.
The small boy only gave her a sad smile, before he vanished in his spot.
"But… I just got here…"
A moment later, she realized that she was actually speaking out loud.
"I didn't mean that…" Frieda spoke quickly, before opening her eyes, to see just who exactly came down to visit her.
When she landed her gaze on that person, her eyes widened in shock.
Outside of her cell, stood Eren.
"Hey..." he expressed, averting her gaze "who were you talking to, just now?"
Frieda couldn't find any words in her mind. Just seeing this boy, standing here, was enough to bring her into a state of panic. Slowly, she rose up from her bed.
"Eren…" the fallen queen spoke, walking closer to the bars "is that really you?"
He changed a lot during those few months. Now, the boy who she once knew really turned into a man. Having grown a few inches, he was definitely towering over her much smaller form. His hair was even longer, so much that their resemblance was almost uncanny. Yet, his usually determined eyes, were now a lot emptier, like something was dead, within him.
"Yeah…" he responded hesitantly "who were you talking to?"
"Eren, I'm sorry!" Frieda cried, clinging to the bars, trying to extend her hands outside, to reach him "I'm so, so sorry about what I did to you… Please, you have to understand…"
"Just stop" the young man responded, closing his eyes.
Immediately, she ceased at once. Seeing that he had her attention, Eren continued.
"No matter what you say, you have already dealt too much harm to me" he stated "I will never forgive you…"
"Eren…" the fallen queen whispered as her eyes filled with tears of distress.
"But" he spoke "no matter what I feel, you are going to be the mother of my child soon. I don't want to hate you…"
Those words filled her with enough hope to keep standing. Just him being here, made her feel emotions that she thought were long gone from her.
"I want our child to grow up loved" Eren continued, this time looking her in the eyes "I've decided to set aside my feelings and focus on giving this kid the freedom they deserve…"
"You came all the way here…" she spoke in disbelief, as more tears poured down her face.
At that, the young man looked away in embarrassment.
"Historia doesn't know I'm here" he explained "I kind of sneaked in… can you answer?"
"Huh…?"
"Who were you talking to?" Eren asked once again "Mikasa told me that she's caught you talking with yourself a few times, before. Just a few moments ago, I heard you speaking…"
Frieda closed her eyes, in an attempt to gather her thoughts.
"The wielder of the founding titan has some access to the experiences and memories of the past shifters" she explained "I appear to be more capable with that, considering I also posses the attack titan. Its normal power seemingly dissipated, once I freed myself…"
"You freed yourself?" The young man asked with wide eyes.
"It was actually your father's emergency plan" Frieda continued "he wanted the king of the walls to start actually caring about his subjects… Too bad he didn't see what I would become…"
Silence filled the air as the two contemplated on their shared fate. It seemed that things weren't going exactly as planned, and only little bit of hope remained within them.
"I don't think your rule was bad" Eren suddenly exclaimed, surprising the fallen queen.
"What…?"
"Don't get me wrong" he elaborated "what you did to me, doesn't really change the fact that you were an excellent ruler."
"But…"
And suddenly, her whole world seemed to shatter.
It happened so fast. Frieda felt a sharp pang in her abdomen, and then, she could feel fluid dripping down her legs.
"Agh!" She yelled, falling to her knees.
"Frieda!" the young man exclaimed in worry.
"Go get someone…!" The fallen queen could only cry out, as pain engulfed her entire form.
So, this was how it was going to be. It started unexpectedly, just like this weird visit. But all in all, Frieda's perspective on the future wasn't entirely negative.
At least, her beloved came to see her…
