Amy Dallon
I knocked on the door to Void's house, I waited, then I rang the doorbell, then I knocked and-
"I'm here."
"Mind if I use your shower?"
Void looked like hell.
"Working on something?"
"No going through paperwork, paying bills, dealing with taxes, the electric company is being a pain in the ass."
I walked in, and marched up to the shower.
"You know the way there, why can't you use the hotel shower?"
"They only have those really crappy soap things and you have the good stuff."
"And you can't buy that stuff why?"
"We keep having to move from hotel to hotel because of liability issues."
"Right, I'm going back to tinkering."
I walked up stairs and flicked the lighswitch and was surprised when the light turned on.
"Must have gotten that generator up finally."
I went into the bath and concentrated on trying to scrum away the grime and other garbage that came with living in a city that was half destroyed. After the shower I put in some bubblebath and just soaked in the hot water, enjoying the heat as my muscles relaxed and the day's stress just vanished. After that I got out and went into the guest bedroom, I pulled out some clothing I had stashed at Void's place and plopped down on his couch.
I turned on his TV and frowned at the static, right the cable was still damaged. I decided to take a nap. I woke up refreshed and still felt a little bored, I got up and looked through the entertainment system for some music.
"Huh."
Let's see, lots of old records, hmm 'Jump in the line' it is, I blew the dust off an put the record on.
"Shake Shake Shake."
Yeah it's a nice beat, I started swaying to the music, I decided to just go with the moment and dance, I closed my eyes and just moved trying to excorsize the years events, trying to get rid of the stress with spaztic movement. When the song was over I smiled, my breathing was heavy and I saw Void looking at me from a hallway, he leaned against the wall and was smiling. He didn't smile alot.
"You didn't um."
"Saw the whole thing."
"Oh..."
I felt red with embarisment.
"You were pretty, I mean um pretty good."
He coughed... and we just let the silence fill the room.
"Mind if I join in the next dance?"
I shrugged, it's not like I could embarrass myself any more.
"What song?"
"Surprise me."
I looked through the records.
"Lots of vinal here."
"Mom was a collector, she hated the electronic recorders, she said it didn't have the warmth of vinal."
"Oh, so this?"
"All her's. mine now I guess- Go ahead, she would want to have this played."
I looked at the music.
"The Motels?"
"Hmm an Earth Aleph band, mom had that custom made, I never listened to it, want to play it?"
I put on the record and Void put his arms around me, I stepped forward, we tried to dance.
"You're stepping on my feet."
"I can fix the damage later if you're that hurt."
"Take it slower. this isn't a race Amy."
I smirked.
"Maybe you need to go faster and catch up to me?"
"HEY AMY, WE-"
Vicky froze.
"Did she just break my door?"
I cringed.
"It isn't what it-"
Vicky gave me a thumbs up, and slowly walked out the door, she then picked up the door and attempted to put it back in its' old spot.
"I'm going to have to fix that you know."
"I'm sorry, she means well."
I sat down on the couch.
"Thanks, that was nice Void."
He sat down next to me.
"Rough day?"
"Lots of bullshit cases, most of the people with the really serious stuff end up getting E-tickets, I mostly deal with flare up disasters and people who can't afford the trip west."
"Oh."
"And I'm getting real tired of having to say 'can I heal you' over and over again."
"Do you have to say that?"
I leaned back.
"Yeah, I do, the hospital makes them all sign paperwork, but you never know when some asshole's going to get screwy so I have to ask every time."
"Ever thought about using a tape recorder?"
I smiled at the memory.
"You know I actually did that once, mom forced me to sto,p it was a legal liability thing."
"Wow that, um kind of sucks."
"Yeah I know."
I leaned against him.
"Sometimes I envy you."
He chuckled.
"What's so funny?"
"Lots of things, at Winslow I'm a loser, oh sure the teachers look after me but that doesn't exactly make me Mr. Popular."
"Ever thought about telling people."
He leaned back.
"Yeah, I would probably get a few girls that way, but it wouldn't work out."
"Why not?"
I was curious.
"Look, let's say I get them to my bedroom right? They might go to bed with Void Cowboy but they're going to wake up with Greg Veder."
I nodded my head, I understood his point even if it wasn't from personal experience.
