Chapter 6

Sleepless night

"Alright," Dean started tensely. "Someone better start talking."

They had just taken the hysterical woman into hospital after explaining to her what had happened. Obviously, she hadn't wanted to believe them. Not that Dean could really blame her for that. He felt sorry for her, but he had other things on his mind right now. It was time for him to get some answers. Sam had parked the car on the side of the road and they were all standing beside it. Sam's wife wasn't looking at Dean, she had wrapped her arms nervously around her.

"It's okay, Esme," Sam hummed as he put his arm around her shoulders. "No need to be nervous."

"What happened?" Dean snapped.

Sam looked at him.

"Well... As I said, my Esme is a very special girl."

"Special how?"

Sam looked at the little redhead and touched her hair.

"Esme, could you get in the car, please? I need to have a word with my brother."

She obeyed without saying a word.

"Well?" Dean asked impatiently.

"She has certain abilities."

Dean frowned.

"What kind of abilities?"

Sam hesitated for a moment before replying.

"She can sense monsters."

Dean stared at him disbelievingly.

"Sense mons... What?"

"When they're near, she can sense them," Sam explained patiently.

"How? How's that possible?"

Again, Sam hesitated.

"Sam?" Dean asked sharply.

"Christian's father found her when she was a child. Her mother was a witch, part of a very nasty coven, and apparently, they had used her as some kind of a guinea pig."

Dean's eyes widened.

"What? And you... married her?"

"Yes," Sam replied calmly. "I love her."

Dean shook his head; he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Have you lost your... Does Bobby know about this?"

"Yeah, he knows."

"I can't believe this," Dean murmured.

"She's not dangerous, if that's what worries you," Sam stated. "She's very sweet."

"Right," Dean snorted. "A very sweet monster magnet."

"No, that's not how it works, she can't summon monsters, only sense them when they're near."

"What a relief," Dean huffed. "I feel so much better now."

"She hasn't hurt anyone," Sam stated firmly.

"Yet," Dean snapped. "Do you even know what she is?"

Sam crossed his arms.

"She's my wife."

"Damn it, Sam..."

"Talk to Christian or Samuel. They can tell you that she's harmless."

"Right. Harmless like Ruby?"

"She's nothing like Ruby," Sam replied firmly.

Dean pressed his lips together; he couldn't believe this.

"We should get going," Sam stated after a moment of silence. "We still need to find those demons."

He paused and glanced at Dean.

"Don't scare Esme."

"Yeah," Dean snorted. "I'm the scary one here."

"Okay," Sam said. "We'll be there in the morning. Thanks, Samuel."

Esme looked at him as he hung up.

"Is everything okay?" she asked.

"Yeah, they're following a lead."

Esme hesitated before continuing.

"About your brother..."

"Don't worry about him, he'll calm down when he gets to know you," Sam assured and gave her a smile.

Esme wasn't so sure about that, not after how Dean had looked at her. She knew that look all too well and she was glad he hadn't wanted to stay in the same motel room with her and Sam. They had decided to rest for couple of hours before returning to Samuel and the others. Not that Sam was ever tired, he could drive as many hours as necessary.

"Hey," Sam hummed and patted her shoulder. "You're safe with me. You know that, right?"

She nodded gratefully.

"Yeah. Thank you."

He smiled and touched her hair.

"You know, we have couple of hours here."

She smiled too, eager to show him how much she appreciated him. Seeing Dean's reaction to her had once again reminded her how grateful she should be for finding someone like Sam. Someone who wasn't repulsed by her.

"Ah...Ah...Oh, Sam!"

"Oh, come on!" Dean snorted and tried to cover his ears. Why the hell had he chosen a room that was right next to Sam's? Because he had thought that they would all sleep for couple of hours before getting back on the road. Clearly, he had been wrong. Not that he could get much sleep, even without the unwanted sex noises. He had too much on his mind. Sam's return, Lisa and Ben, Sam's wife... He had called Bobby in order to check on Lisa and Ben, but most of their conversation had been about Sam's wife. According to Bobby, she really was harmless. Dean still wasn't sure if he believed that. Why had Sam married her?

"Ah...Ah..."

Well, he could now think of at least one reason. It sounded like she was a wildcat in bed. Not that Dean wanted to think about that, at least not very much. No, he didn't want to think about that at all. He already had enough things to worry about. What would happen after they would hunt the demons down? There would be more, he was sure of it. Maybe demons, maybe something else. Had he really thought that his past would never come back to haunt him? No, but a part of him had dared to hope. Now he had put Lisa and Ben in danger. How was he supposed to fix that?

"Oh, Sam!"

"Seriously?" he murmured. "Could you two stop it already!"

Clearly neither Sam nor Esme heard him, they just kept on going. Dean sighed and buried his face in the pillow. Apparently, he wasn't going to get any sleep tonight.
