"It's almost time," Jonathan quietly reminded himself.
Today was October tenth, the day Naruto Uzumaki was born. Moreover, for Jonathan, the day the nine-tails would attack was today.
Jonathan had waited almost an entire year for this moment. If he was unsuccessful in his plans, he'd be setback for several more years or decades even. Failure was not an option for Jonathan.
At eight thirty at night, the orphans began preparing for bed. Jonathan had already made his preparations earlier. To be fair, Jonathan had been preparing for more than ten months now. He hadn't just practiced necessary jutsus, he was also learning and re-learning important information that he had forgotten about in this world.
Jonathan hadn't completely known the exact time the nine-tails would attack. It was never mentioned in any of the data books, nor was it recorded in the comic books. He could only estimate that it was late at night. If Jonathan were Obito Uchiha, he would summon the nine-tails when the Leaf Village citizens were sound asleep.
The thought of leaving early and simply waiting wasn't an option for Jonathan. There were things he needed before departing for the Leaf. But when the time came, like a thief in the night, Jonathan leapt from his bed and made it to the medical ward without making a single sound. The clock showed it was nine-thirty at night.
Because there was no commotion outside the orphanage, Jonathan knew the nine-tails hadn't yet been summoned. The moment an earthquake or loud noises from afar were heard, Jonathan's plans would be ruined if he wasn't in the area. Time was of the essence.
Jonathan entered the medical ward and began grabbing the necessary supplies. Trying to make as little noise as possible, he found poison in the cabinets which Nonō kept safely stored and out of reach for emergencies. He knew where everything was in the orphanage because he had spent a grueling ten months living here. Jonathan grabbed only one vial of poison, a vacutainer, a couple of plastic bags and a hypodermic needle. All these things were going to be useful because this was likely Jonathan's last night at the orphanage.
By the time Jonathan had the items in his hands and was ready to depart, he heard a faint sound. Jonathan turned around but hadn't seen anyone. When he scanned the room, he saw someone hiding behind the medicine cabinet.
"I know you're there," Jonathan said.
The person hadn't revealed himself, but after a few seconds of silence he finally came out.
"Musei, what are you doing?" Kabuto asked.
Leave it to one of the world's greatest spies and infiltrators of all time to spot Jonathan at a critical juncture.
"How did you know I was here, Kabuto?"
"I—I saw you weren't in bed so I got up to go look for you."
Jonathan closed his eyes to let out a slight smirk. He set his supplies down slowly. Before Kabuto knew what was happening, Jonathan had already formed the tiger seal. Having perfected the teleportation technique (hi-speed movements), Kabuto couldn't even blink when Jonathan closed the distance. Jonathan jabbed at Kabuto's chin so hard it sent his glasses flying straight up into the air.
Before Kabuto could hit the ground, Jonathan grabbed his shirt and caught his airborne glasses. Though Kabuto would soon become one of the world's greatest adversaries, he was nowhere near that level now.
Jonathan picked Kabuto up and placed him with his glasses on a stretcher. Too much time has already been spent here. Whether Kabuto had or hadn't seen what Jonathan was up to this late night hadn't mattered to Jonathan at the moment. For he had no plans to return to the orphanage if he was successful.
Leaving Kabuto asleep, Jonathan grabbed all of his supplies and left the orphanage without making a single sound. It had been almost a whole year since Jonathan had entered the orphanage, but he hadn't even looked back once while he was leaving. When he reached the spot where he buried his tool bag ten months ago, he began digging. The bag was tattered, but Jonathan hadn't cared. It was what was inside the bag that mattered.
Two out of the three kunai inside had rust on them. The Leaf headband, as well as the senbon, were still intact.
