Chapter 30
Levi is now in a fight with Kenny as he hurries away, but just as the top of the wagon opens, Eren, Aya, and Historia are exposed. But Eren and Aya already have guns in their hands as they try to shoot bullets at them, killing some of them. But just then, Historia was shot by the tranquilizer, and Eren yells, "Historia!"
And at the same time, Eren is shot. Aya widens her eyes and says, "Eren! No!" But she quickly dodges the third tranquilizer by jumping off the wagon.
"You bastard!" Aya shoots at the one shooting the tranquilizer, but much to her horror, the wagon is hijacked and Kenji is also killed. It is at the same time, she notices Levi beside her.
"Dad?" Aya asks in surprise, and Levi says, "Aya, go back with the others!"
Just then, she sees Levi being targeted by the 3 Interior Police as he tries to dodge, Aya uses the chance to flee and find others.
Levi dodges the attack, and then he arrives inside a bar.
"It's Levi... of the Survey Corps!" A customer gasps.
"W-welcome to our establishment!" The owner panicks while Levi is struggling to stand up.
When Kenny walks in, he says, "Ain't that the damnedest thing! I smell a filthy rat coming from this bar... Come out, you little rodent..."
Levi quickly hide under the bar table, and Kenny says, "Found ya! The law has come to exterminate the vermin! Bang! Bang!"
Levi doesn't bother to answer for the moment as Kenny continues on.
"The hell? Ain't you here?!" Kenny asks.
"Right here, Kenny. It's been a while. Never thought you'd still be alive. What happened to the slaughter of the Military Police? Now you're one of them?" Levi replies.
"Adults do plenty of things a kid like you can't understand. Oops, my bad. You're just so tiny, it's hard to believe you're older now, especially since you have a daughter who gave us a lot of trouble."
"And you're kidnapping her boyfriend, I'm pretty sure that your men isn't going to escape her wrath." Levi says.
"Speaking of the girl...you sure raised a miniature version of yourself...more like a girl version since she's just like you. The brat killed nearly half of my men a lot of years ago."
"Heh, I'm proud of her." Levi smirks.
"I've been looking forward to seeing you in action. Never thought all those tricks I taught you would be helping you out like this, and you also taught them to your daughter as well. Didn't I ever tell you what happens to a cornered rat? No matter which way you try to run, you'll get blasted from above."
A lot of soldiers are waiting outside if Levi tries to escape, and Kenny questions Levi on why he becomes a Scout.
"You know that little girl is special right? The government wants her for something." Kenny says.
"I suppose you won't tell me what for huh?" Levi asks.
"I'm under no obligation to explain kid." Kenny replies. "To achieve my grand goals, I'll kill as much as I have to. You are no different. You kill when it benefits you too."
"Yeah." Suddenly, Levi takes out a rifle and aims at Kenny without facing him, and the bullet manages to blast through the chair protecting Kenny and blasting him out of the bar. Then Levi uses the chairs as a distraction to escape the soldiers waiting outside, also killing some of them along the way.
Back with the scouts, Sasha hears gunshots, and Dina says, "Guys, listen to me. From now on, we'll not only be fighting Titans but humans too. So you have to make sure you'll be able to kill."
"Get back here!" Then they hear a scream, and they see Aya chasing after the wagon with Eren and Historia on it. Katrina says, "Damn it! The wagon is hijacked!"
"Let's go!" Peter and Odom also chase after the wagon and the others are following. Captain Levi also arrives and he, Katrina, Odom, Peter, and Aya kill some Interior Police members along the way.
"Chase the carriage!" Levi yells at others.
"Of course!" Mikasa says as they chase after the wagon. Levi says, "Listen up! They're used to fighting other people! They already got three of ours. If we're gonna get those two back, you can't hesitate! If you get the chance, you kill! Got it?!"
Then Aya shoots out a hook and causes the man on the wagon to get killed. Jean and Armin are trying to secure the wagon and despite what Levi has just said, Jean still can't kill the girl before him.
He gets taken down and has a gun pointed at him...if it isn't for Armin's quick action and shooting her...he'd be dead by now.
In Captial Mitras, the Government is having a meeting. "How disappointing that nothing came from Erwin. We still don't know the location of Eren Yeager, Aya Neumann, and Historia. At this rate, freezing Scout activity will prove all for naught."
"Indeed. Do we know what information they might have learned from Pastor Nick?"
"No helping it. If we question too much, we'll reveal to them things they didn't know in the first place."
"No, what they know or don't know matters not. It's what they tried to learn. That's plenty. We should deal with them to the extent of the law. Just as we've done until now..."
Suddenly the doors open and a letter is given, it is a note stating that they have successfully captured Eren and Historia but Aya has escaped. That is both good news and bad news because now Aya is still out there.
Outside the abandoned building, Armin seems to be vomiting with the group and Dina standing behind him. He asks the others if that happened to them, but is horrified at himself for asking that and quickly apologizes to them.
Back at the chase, more soldiers arrive, Odom and Mikasa are forced to get Jean and Armin away which leads them to leave the wagon and the three of them took control.
Aya is trying to chase after them, but Levi stops her. "Don't do it! Fall back!"
Aya tries to struggle, but her father keeps pushing her back. With tears in her eyes, she yells, "EERRREEENNN!"
Inside the building, Levi comforts Armin as well, telling him that Jean would not be alive if he had not dirtied his hands. Afterward, Levi and Mikasa talk to Dimo Reeves, and Levi manages to convince him to lend them a hand, in exchange for their help in ensuring the survival of the people of Trost District.
Under the pretense of being on the side of the MPs, Dimo Reeves leads two Interior Squad members, Ralph and Sannes, to the location of Levi's hideout. It turns out to be a trap set by Levi's squad, and the two MPs are knocked out and imprisoned by the Scouts. Sannes is tortured by Levi and Hange, but he refuses to reveal what he knows on account of his loyalty to the King. It was only after Levi and Hange tricked him into believing that Ralph had betrayed him that Sannes finally relented, revealing that the Reiss family is the true royal family.
Elsewhere, Kenny finds and kills Dimo Reeves for his defection to the Scouts, while his son, Flegel, silently witnesses the act from around a corner. In a windowed room at an unknown location, Rod Reiss reunites with his daughter, Historia. He gives Historia a hug and apologizes to her, while a bound and gagged Eren watches from the side.
"Aya... please be careful..." Eren thinks.
(Flashback)
The whole Levi Squad is sitting at the table while Historia talks about her story. "I was born on a small farm in the northern region of Wall Rose. It was on land owned by the noble family of Reiss."
As a young girl, she grew up on a farm doing chores and other tasks, while her mother ignored her, spending her days reading. As Historia learned to read herself, she began to realize that her situation was not normal, as parents were supposed to care for their children. One day, Historia tried to hug her mother as she had read about; however, her mother vehemently shoved her away and lamented the fact that she was not able to kill Historia. Even so, Historia was happy to have gotten any attention at all. That was the last time she saw her mother in a long time, as she went to live elsewhere for a period of time.
Five years ago, after the fall of Wall Maria, Historia met her father for the first time. He was Rod Reiss, the lord who ruled the land they lived on. Rod said that she would be living with him from now on, but before he could leave with her and her mother, he was approached by men in black suits, including Kenny Ackermann. Kenny grabbed her mother and when Historia called for her, her mother denied that Historia was her child, saying that she had nothing to do with her. Hearing this, Kenny asked Rod for confirmation and Rod reluctantly agreed. Historia watched as Kenny killed her mother, whose last words were wishing that she had never given birth to her. Kenny would have killed Historia as well, but Rod intervened and had her sent away to live a quiet life.
"Your name will be Christa Lenz." Rod said to his daughter.
(Flashback Ends)
Rod says that he had no choice in order to protect her, and he tells her that she has special blood like Aya. Historia asks, "What does Aya have to do with this?"
"Miss Aya comes from a special bloodline that can wield the power of titans and even transfer them. It's a powerful gift that our Founder has given to their clan since the beginning of time. Mostly because our Founder and the first head of the Neumann were best friends before their fall."
He also tells her that the Reiss family is the true royal family and because of that, she is the only person who can save humanity. He takes her with him to the place where it all began.
Meanwhile, Djel Sannes is reunited with Ralph in a prison cell. He attacks his comrade, thinking that he betrayed him, but Hange Zoë admits that it was a ruse and Ralph had only been reading from a script while being threatened with a knife. Sannes breaks down on learning that his betrayal of the King was his fault alone, but warns Hange that the role he plays is one that another will step into to start the act all over again, so humanity will never be done with the sort of work they have. He wishes them luck.
After leaving the prison, Hange lashes out at the nearby furniture over their frustration with Sannes. Hange blames it on a cockroach when Levi Ackermann walks in on them. He brings Hange over to the rest of the squad where they fill them in on how Eren Jaeger will likely be eaten.
"That means..." Aya says, "Eren has warned me about this, they want Historia to become a pure Titan and eat Eren, so they can take the power of the Founding Titan..."
"Historia has royal blood just like me." Dina says, "If she eats Eren, then she will be bound by the renouncing vow... then all the efforts will be in vain."
"But what about Aya? Why do they want with her?" Connie asks.
"They must have known about my powers as well." Aya growls. "And they just want my powers for their use."
Mikasa and Aya try to leave, but Levi stops them. "Calm down. Even if you go on a rampage, they're not going to give Eren back to us. Anyways, we head for the lands of this Rod Reiss. Get ready to leave at once."
That same night, Dot Pyxis meets with Erwin Smith. He apologizes for the visit and says that he read Erwin's letter. Pyxis asks if Erwin is serious, and Erwin confirms that if they want to retake Wall Maria they will have to overthrow the government, but his plan will not require military forces to take action if his guess is correct. While they wait for news to arrive, Erwin tells Pyxis a story about his father.
Shortly thereafter, Hange and Moblit Berner arrive, bringing news of Historia's lineage. Erwin informs Pyxis of the true royal family and how Squad Levi is currently trying to rescue her. Once they do, they will install her as Queen and force the fake King to relinquish the crown. Pyxis agrees to back his plan.
After Pyxis leaves, Erwin hands Hange the results of his investigation into the Reiss family. One of his soldiers also comes in to inform him that the First Interior Squad is making a ruckus out in the city, claiming that Erwin organized a murder. Erwin orders Hange to get away from here while he acts as the face of their organization. He informs Hange that they will be the next commander of the Scout Regiment and places the Scouts under Hange's command.
It is dawn outside when Erwin arrives to find Dimo Reeves's grieving family around his body. One of the MPs addresses Erwin and explains a story about how Reeves kidnapped Eren so that the Scouts would not have to turn him over to the government. Then the Scouts killed Reeves to keep him from talking. The MP charges Erwin and the Scouts with a violation of clause six of the Humanity Charter; prioritizing one's gain over the safety and longevity of humanity. For this, all Scouts are to be apprehended. Hange and Moblit get away, but the rest of the Scouts at headquarters are arrested.
In Stohess District, the Military Police hand out fliers for the arrest of the Scout Regiment. Jean Kirschtein takes one before he, Dina, and Mikasa leave the city for their camp in the woods.
"The Military Police were handing out these." Armin shows the newspaper to Levi. "If this is true, the Scouts will be disbanded. I heard they'll be hunting for us tonight. They're also putting guards on all the vital roads, and it's impossible to get through without a pass. Captain, what now?"
Aya says, "If we don't hurry, Eren..."
"Calm down." Levi says. "They're using a wagon. It'll take at least a day to reach Reiss' territory. We'll have to use that time to come up with a plan."
Before they can discuss this further, Sasha Braus announces that she hears footsteps, and everyone is ready to see if it is an enemy.
