Chapter Two: The Dark Power of the Void Century: An Ancient Power Sealed Away
Chapter Summary: Rayleigh starts to realize the severity of what is happening and starts a course of action. Buggy explains what Shanks might be up too. Ace, Luffy, Sabo, and Marco come face to face with Shanks. Later, Shanks confronts Akainu.
Rayleigh had already been preparing to seek out Shanks the second that he had heard the news. Especially after catching word that Akainu had managed to get away during the destruction of Mariejois. He could feel the rumble from where he had been. He knew something bad had happened almost immediately. He could feel it in the air. The bloodlust that followed. Then the word hit the newspapers.
Benn Beckman was dead. He didn't even need all the information to know what hell was about to come to the world.
Benn was all in all, Shanks' first love. His husband. His everything. Rayleigh had seen it the last time he had seen Shanks. He had seen how happy he was when he talked about his relationship with Benn. Benn had been the person who Shanks trusted the most. It will still sometimes hard for him to see what Shanks had become. That he wasn't the same little boy that grew up on the Oro Jackson. Seeing him from just a baby to now. Shanks had gone far in his life, bonded with many people, and most of all, fallen in love. It was no secret that the life of a pirate was dangerous. Shanks would have known that. He would have been at least suspecting of injuries. Either way, death was a hard thing to face. Even if it was something that was well known in their life.
Benn Beckman was Shanks' first major loss since Roger's execution. Shanks never really had to experience the loss of a friend. That was until now. Benn had been so much more than a friend. The loss of his life hit far worse than any other death would hit him.
Rayleigh wouldn't have been too concerned about the situation, how Shanks would react, if it wasn't for the clear displacement of how he handled it. At that moment in time, he had no regard for the safety of anyone else. Just vengeance. He had eavesdropped on Marines who had been present. How they spoke about the difference in Shanks. How he lashed out at anyone who dared to step near him. Even lashing out at his own nakama.
It felt odd that Rayleigh knew this. He wasn't even present, but he could feel Shanks' pain from even here.
Shanks was going to tear apart the seas, and he was going to start with the man responsible.
He had helped raise Shanks. He knew how he reacted to certain situations. How when he was angry enough, he would start to release his haki without even realizing it. He wished he could sum it down to just that. That Shanks was hurting so much that he just couldn't control it. This felt different. It felt like the balance had shifted, and one man was prepared to take everything down with him.
He had caught word that the Marines were preparing to hunt down Shanks for his actions. Could they not see that was probably the stupidest thing they could do? Shanks never would have lashed out if it wasn't for the life of one of his own being taken. If anyone had a vendetta, it was the Red Hair Pirates. He wouldn't be surprised if the Red Hair Pirates had decided to declare war against the World Government. That they decided to go after Akainu following their loss. It was reasonable. Pirates versus Marines. Marines constantly hunted pirates, but pirates wouldn't actively seek them out. That just wasn't what they did.
This was different. Rayleigh could feel it.
Shanks was going to seek out those responsible. Take the fight back to them. Shanks had always been one for keeping the peace. Heading to Marineford years before just to end the war because of his distaste to fighting. Shanks had been the same way as a kid. Preferring not to fight unless if he had too.
When he got the call on the den den mushi, he knew just how serious this actually was.
X
Marco had decided to call the others using the Den Den Mushi that he had remembered to grab. Placing it out to where everyone could hear it and it could pick up the other voices as he had Yasopp recount the events again. This time to Whitebeard and the others. After Yasopp explained where they believed Shanks might be heading, he could hear Buggy screaming in the background. The pit in his stomach getting more as he heard, "We can't let him get there!"
"Buggy?" Luffy questioned, leaning against the table as he looked down at the snail, watching as the snail formed into a closer version of Buggy. "What are you talking about?"
"Listen to me!" Buggy barked. "A long time ago in the Void Century, Joyboy locked away an ancient power. It's a form of Haki that negatively impacts the user, or at least runs off of the negative and dark emotions and thoughts of the person using it! I don't remember everything, but it's power can be overwhelming. I remember what Captain Roger said about it… that no one should ever touch it!"
Marco hummed, frowning as he leaned against the table, peering up towards Ace. Ace was against allowing Shanks to go through with going after Akainu. It honestly felt like the only thing he would be doing. Going after the man responsible for taking Benn's life. Honestly, Marco believed he should be allowed to.
A life for a life. While pirates didn't necessarily seek out Marines like this, Shanks definitely wasn't someone to sit by and watch as his nakama were threatened. Benn had been his everything. There was no way that Shanks wouldn't do it. Issue a warning to anyone who dared to go after them again. Ace kept talking about how Shanks would ultimately destroy himself in the process. Marco wasn't blind. He knew that Shanks preferred peace and harmony, but this was Benn. His lover. Marco would destroy anyone who dared to hurt Ace. Why shouldn't Shanks be allowed too?
Marco definitely didn't like what Buggy was saying. What he was referring to. He had never heard of such a thing, but the Roger Pirates – including Buggy and Shanks – knew more about this world than any of them. That's what made this terrifying. After hearing what took place at the palace, he was starting to believe Ace. Shanks had started to lash out against anyone who dared to move. Even his own nakama. That wasn't like him.
He sighed, shaking his head, "And we are sure that this is where he's going? He doesn't need some ancient power to take down Fleet Admiral Akainu." Marco stated.
"That's not the point." Buggy grumbled. Marco could hear the sharp exhale from the other side, "Out of all you idiots, Ace is the only one who is right. If that bastard gets ahold of that power… the devastation that will follow."
Sabo stepped forward, a dark look on his face that had them all looking towards him, "I don't think the question is if we can stop him. I'm sure the Red Hair Pirates will have no issue with allowing him go to after Akainu… he already had the head start. He could already be there as we speak. If he isn't thinking clearly, do you really think we can stop him? He could already have this power. He doesn't need it, but think about it… wouldn't you want to make sure that no one could escape from you when you're on a vengeance streak?"
Sabo was asking all the right questions. The ones that they didn't want to ask. Marco eyed Ace again. The way the other moved from foot to foot. Ace trained under Shanks for two years. He got to know him better. Ace came back to them as a changed man. More mature. Less likely to put himself into a near death situation again. He learned a lot. Marco was grateful, but it also gave them an edge. Ace told them he knew Shanks' ability of blocking Haki. At least, minimally to Conqueror's Haki and he could block Observation Haki.
There was silence that had followed, no one else saying a word. "Sabo…" Luffy whispered.
"Who are we to say that he will stop at Akainu?" Sabo continued. "If he really is so far out of his mind? Won't he start going after everyone he believed was involved?" He stopped again, curling his hand more on his pipe. "He didn't even care that he left behind his nakama. He's so focused on ending Akainu's life that he willingly left the people who want to do the same behind. That is not a man that is thinking clearly. He has no back up. I believe he could do it, but he could be wanting this power, so he doesn't have to have his nakama."
"He won't be the same." Buggy whispered; his voice was so low that Marco barely heard it get picked up on the Den Den Mushi. Softer than usual for the man. "Like I said, it's believed to enhance the negative emotions of the person who uses it. It will destroy every fiber of humanity he has."
Marco was completely starting to believe Ace's concerns. Even before they knew about this, Ace had been adamant about not allowing Shanks to go through with this. Even if Marco wanted him to, to seek revenge on the man who caused so much pain and grief to them all, he would respect Ace's wishes. Ace knew Shanks better than he did. He got to spend time with him in a way that he hadn't. Even the Red Hair Pirates were on board with trying to stop him. Thinking that this wasn't the best course of action.
"Red Nose," He was cut off by Buggy's screeching for a second before he decided to interject again, "I need to know everything about this. We need to know it's exact location and what we might expect if Red-Hair has already gotten ahold of it."
"Be prepared to fight."

Garp was furious as they got into Akainu's office. Sakazuki was sitting behind his desk as if he didn't just stir up the biggest trouble on the entirety of the Grand Line. Garp couldn't explain it, but he could feel the imbalance of power. Sakazuki had made one of the biggest errors that he could have.
Akainu believed in Absolute Justice. Anyone who was a so-called criminal deserved the gallows. That one wrong thing made them worthy of death. Garp had been close to killing Akainu himself back at Marineford. He was prepared too. He was no longer a Marine, but at least he still had the brains to know that this was the stupidest thing that Akainu could have done. If the world caught wind of what truly happened, it could sway the ideals of the civilians over to the pirates and the Revolutionary Army. The Revolutionary Army was getting closer and closer to bringing down the system of the world.
It almost felt like a farfetched plan to try and take away powers from the opposing side. It was no secret that the Red Hair Pirates interacted with the Revolutionary Army. Garp knew why, and it didn't have anything to do with taking down the World Government.
It revolved around two people.
Ace and Sabo.
Shanks had been the one to help Ace following Marineford, reuniting him with Sabo later on. It just kind of stuck. Did Sakazuki really think this could somehow help their situation? He didn't understand it. Just that he believed that this was a wrong move on Akainu's part.
Sakazuki looked up at them as they came into the room and Garp crossed his arms over his chest. "You fool." He stated.
"What brings the two of you here?" Sakazuki questioned.
Garp could feel the vein in his head pop out. Sengoku had taken the lead, walking over to the Fleet Admiral's desk. "Why did you go after the Red Hair Pirates?"
Sakazuki gave him a flat look, but there was still a ferocity in his eyes. Garp knew that the second that Sakazuki told him the reason, that he would be ready to catapult over the desk and take care of it. By take care of it, he meant with his fist because he couldn't believe the absolute stupidity that Sakazuki had done. This was going to reflect badly on the entirety of the World Government if the truth got out.
Akainu sighed, grumbling for a moment before he was saying, "The Revolutionary Army is close to taking down the World Government. We have to stop the rising powers of Revolutionaries and pirates alike." The Fleet Admiral stopped for a second, casting Garp another look. "What? Do you really think that pirate deserved to live?"
Garp gritted his teeth, letting his nails bite into his palms. "Do you not realize the severity of what you have done?!"
Akainu folded his hands on the desk, keeping his gaze stuck to Garp. "I had to act. The balance of powers in the world depended on it. If the World Government falls to the Revolutionary Army, nothing will be able to stop the pirates. We had to take action."
Sengoku marched forward, slamming his hands down on his old desk. "Sakazuki! You knew this was not the way to do it! Do you not realize that Red-Hair will come for you?!"
Akainu shrugged. "Then I will be able to kill him when he does."
"You damn fool!" Garp hissed, "There is a reason—"
"The World Government needs to stop being afraid of him." Akainu stated.
"I think your last concern should be about if you can kill him…" Garp growled, "It's when he comes back for you."
"Benn Beckman is laying cold, and that pirate is after your head." Sengoku added.
Akainu still wasn't seeing the severity of it. Garp could see that. No matter what they said. Akainu knew how dangerous Shanks could be. If Garp was right about this, this would not end well for any of them. "He will blow this entire world apart to kill you, Sakazuki."
"Let him. Gives me even more reason to send him to the gallows."

Finalizing where they believed that Shanks was, Ace, Luffy, Sabo, and Marco once again headed out ahead of the others. They had rested up enough, and if Buggy was correct on this, they had to do everything that they could to get to Shanks before he made a grave mistake.
Luffy was worried.
He had been ever since he had heard the news. He knew how much Benn meant to Shanks, and vice versa. The two were almost never away from each other when he had seen them. He had seen the way that Benn and Shanks looked at each other. The love and admiration that was there. He never quite understood it as a kid. That wasn't until he met Law and he understood.
He also hated how much Ace was right about this.
If Shanks went after Akainu right now, it went against everything that Shanks ever stood for. What he used to tell Luffy. What he had following Luffy's rise to Pirate King. He just wanted to see Shanks. Make sure that he was okay.
Yet, there was a feeling in the pit of his chest that nothing would be right when they did. He could feel it. Like the shifting tides. A storm was brewing, and they had little time to get to Shanks. He was sure Sabo was right. That Shanks might already have good ahold of this power. He could really remember what Robin had said about it when they had learned from the Poneglyphs of the history of the world. Especially the one on Laugh Tale.
He just wanted Shanks to be okay, but he knew better than that.
Shanks wasn't okay.
But it didn't mean that he couldn't be there for him.
X
It took a while, but they had finally landed on the island where Yasopp and Buggy said that this ancient power was.
He could feel Shanks coming before they had even stepped foot onto the shore. He could feel how hurt, how angry he was. The thought came to his mind. There was no talking someone down from that. This was not going to be easy.
There was also the difference in his haki. He could tell. It was much darker. It was not the same Haki that he would feel coming off of him when they trained together. He didn't have to see him to know that Shanks in fact had gotten ahold of the power that he had been searching for. Answering the questions that they all had.
He shared a look with Marco, nodding as he grabbed his hand, letting him pull him onto the shore. He dropped it almost immediately. This was far worse than he would have every imagined.
Shanks was far more dangerous now than he was before.
He felt like there wouldn't be talking to him. That reasoning with him wouldn't work. Sure, he wanted to see Akainu burn. Though, it had been Shanks who had told him he needed to let go of what happened at Marineford. How angry he had been from hearing what Akainu said. It was part of what was leading him to trying to persuade the others into also stopping Shanks.
This wasn't right.
They all knew it.
"Where should we start?" Luffy questioned.
Ace shook his head. It only took a moment. Just a small moment of feeling the overwhelming power approaching. Getting closer by the second before he blinked, and he was just there.
Shanks stood before them now as they all practically jumped back from his sudden appearance. Ace almost couldn't believe what he was seeing. This wasn't Shanks, but it was. Just standing in front of him had sent the bone-chilling shiver down his spine. Shanks did not look like the happy, carefree Shanks they had come to know. His eyes were practically dead. There was no light within them, as if the entire world had been ripped from him.
But there was a major difference. His left arm was back, covered in symbols that Ace had never seen before. He didn't even understand how it was there, but it was. There was so much that he didn't know about what was going on. What Shanks possibly could have tapped into to get that. His normally bright red hair was as dark as night. The same shade as Ace's. The only thing that showed that this man was in fact Shanks was the three trademark scars on his face. Even his facial hair was black.
Ace never thought he would see this. See a day that there was a blood fury running through the normal pacifist that was Red-Haired Shanks. He could feel Shanks' need for vengeance. The bloodlust to go after Akainu's head. There were so many emotions that he could feel going through him despite the cold, expressionless face staring back at them.
"What are you doing here?" Shanks questioned. It was his voice, but even then, it sounded so exhausted. Not the normal, upbeat that Ace had been accustomed to knowing. "Shouldn't you be at the Summit?"
"Shanks—" Ace started to say but was cut off by the glance he received. No one could say a word. Not a sound coming from anyone. He wasn't sure if it was from the shock, or the fact that Shanks' willpower was flooding over them. Ace could feel how exhausted his body was getting just from standing in Shanks' presence. He really wasn't holding anything back. Even for them.
Luffy had been the only one to break out of it, stepping forward and raising his hands. "Shanks… are you okay?"
The laugh of disbelief that followed from Shanks only worked to send another chill down Ace's spine. What the hell happened to him? "Am I okay?" Shanks stated, the dumbfound tone in his voice as he turned his attention to Luffy. "That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard you say."
Luffy frowned before his face was covered in anger. "What the hell is going on with you?! This isn't you, Shanks!"
That was first time that he had seen an actual emotion come back to Shanks' face as he took a step towards Luffy. Ace immediately went into overdrive, reaching out for Luffy but freezing as he realized that he couldn't move. "Red-Hair!" Marco snapped, "You really think doing all of this! Taking whatever this is…" He paused, motioning at Shanks with a look of disbelief on his face, "Will change what happened?!"
Shanks turned towards Marco this time, the glare that came to his face as he snarled, "Don't act like you wouldn't do the same, Commander Marco." There was so much distain in Shanks' voice. His voice cracking for a second before his bearings were back. "I'm going to use this power to destroy every last one of them. Starting with him."
"Shanks!" Luffy shouted, the worry covering his face as he reached out to touch the yonko. When his hand landed on Shanks', they were all blown back. Ace rolled across the dirt, grunting as he landed on his back. He was quick to push himself up, looking over to where Shanks had been standing.
He was gone.
"What the fuck?" Marco whispered. "Did he just… disappear?!"
"Well, this is going to be a lot harder than we thought." Sabo groaned, balancing on his forearms as he pushed himself up.
Luffy looked like he was close to tears as he got back to his feet, shaking his head, "That wasn't Shanks."
"Straw Hat…" Marco whispered.
"That's not Shanks!" Luffy snapped, not allowing Marco to finish his sentence. "The Shanks I know wouldn't do that!"
Ace sighed, getting back to his feet, and dusting himself off. "Rather we like it or not… it was. We need to get to Marineford or maybe get ahold of Gramps and warn them of what's coming."
"We can't do that!" Luffy exclaimed, turning to face Ace with a shocked expression. "They'll hurt him!"
"I don't think any amount of physical pain will cover for the pain he's actually in." Ace replied. His statement had them quieting down. They were always one step behind Shanks at this point. They weren't far from the Tarai Current that held the former Enies Lobby, Impel Down, and Marineford. Shanks had no ship. There was no telling how he was getting there, but at this rate, Ace was sure it wouldn't take him long. Ace stopped as he noticed the look that was on Marco's face. "Marco?"
"What is it, bird guy?" Luffy questioned, blinking for a second.
Marco looked almost sick to his stomach as he looked out at the ocean, "Red-Hair…" His voice trailed as he shook his head, "Sabo was right. He's going after everyone he thinks is involved with this. I think Akainu is the least of our concerns. Akainu would deserve it no matter what Red-Hair does. It's Koby."
The realization came to Luffy's face as his jaw dropped and eyes went wide. He immediately started to shake his head, the denials flying from his mouth, "He… wouldn't."
"He pretty much confirmed it, Luffy." Sabo muttered. "We have to stop him."
"Let's go!" Luffy shouted, already heading back towards Striker. "Akainu is one thing, but if you're right… if he tries to kill Koby…" He couldn't even catch everything that his brother was saying anymore from how far he had gotten away from them.
This almost felt like they were running in circles. Shanks was too far ahead of them. They were right. They probably wouldn't be able to stop him from getting to Akainu. Akainu seemed justified, no matter what he felt. Even if he felt like this wasn't the best choice for Shanks to make at this moment. He was clearly running just purely off of harsh emotions.
It was what Marco said was concerning him the most.
Koby wouldn't willingly play a part like that. At least, he didn't think so. Koby didn't seem like the type of man who would go after a pirate in the way that Akainu did. By playing dirty. Marineford told him enough on that.
"What do you want to do, Ace?" Sabo questioned.
Ace sighed. "We need to find Koby. We won't ever catch up to him in time to stop him from getting Akainu, but we can at least protect Koby."
With their new plan in mind, Ace started back towards Striker. He just hoped that he wouldn't regret this decision.
It seemed like they all were going to get their way.
Though, if he was being completely honest, he wouldn't shed a tear if he heard that Shanks was successful. He absolutely could not allow Shanks to go after Koby. They had to figure out everyone that was involved in some form with what happened in Mariejois. They would be Shanks' next targets. That he was positive about.
He took a moment, turning towards Sabo before he was saying, "I need you to do something for me."
Sabo paused, eyeing him for a second before he was nodding, "You still want to try and stop him. Ace, we have to go now. We don't know anything about that power. Shanks is already fast as he is. He could already be close to Marineford by now."
Ace shook his head. "Kind of." Ace whispered, "We need to get ahold of Gramps."
X
Sakazuki grumbled as Garp, and Sengoku finally left his office. It had taken nearly the entire day and night to get them to leave. The two spewing out their nonsense that his actions at Mariejois wasn't the right plan. There wasn't much that he could do in capturing the strongest pirates. Shanks was still among them, even if he stayed lurking in the shadows. He was the biggest issue out of all of them. Even that Straw Hat Luffy who was known to the world as the Pirate King.
Shanks knew too much. He had to be eliminated. He had been trying for years to finally get that man executed and he found his chance.
It didn't work exactly as planned, but he had managed to dispose of that one piece of scum that was Benn Beckman. All pirates were scum, no matter who they were.
The Red Hair Pirates.
The Whitebeard Pirates.
The Strawhat Pirates.
All of them.
They all deserved the gallows.
As the Fleet Admiral, he had to ensure the balance of power stayed. They no longer had the Warlords, even if he was still disgusted by the very idea of having pirates as allies, to keep that balance. The pirates would continue to outnumber the Marines. The Revolutionary Army was moving it.
It had to be done.
He only wished that he had been able to hit Red-Haired Shanks. He had been a second away from taking his life, but Benn Beckman had to get in the way. The loyal First Mate and Vice Captain. Giving his life to protect his just as horrible Captain. Shanks was a pain in the World Government's ass, and he needed to be stopped.
Soon enough, they would get him.
Shanks' time was running out.
He stopped as he felt the chill wash over him. The magma user looked around, frowning as he saw the lighting flickering. "What the hell?"
Then he heard the panic. The shouts that came next from the halls. The overwhelming power washing over him. Crashing against him and the walls in waves. This wasn't right.
Akainu was to his feet in an instant, already heading for the door. He stopped as his hand settled over the handle, the hairs on the back of his next standing as he turned to look over his shoulder.
Standing directly behind him had him actually pausing for a moment. Looking into almost pitch-black eyes. "Sorry about the mess, Akainu. I tend to get a bit… nervous in enemy territory."
Akainu let his magma start to bubble on his arm, lighting up the darkening room as he hissed out, "Red-Hair."
Shanks stood before him, a smirk on his face as he tilted his head. "I'm going to enjoy this."
"I should have known you'd get here quickly." Akainu stated.
Shanks hummed, shrugging as he gripped at the sword on his hip. "What can I say? Having a bit of extra power helps."
Akainu let the smirk come to his face. With Shanks here, he could finish the job. He pulled up his arm, getting ready to launch his attack at the pirate. "Let's settle this." As he moved to land the attack on the the other, he felt the shock come to him as he realized that his attack never hit. That it was being stopped just inches away from Shanks' chest. His eyes widened for a split second to notice that the pirate hadn't even unsheathed his sword. It was like a sort of force field was stopping the attack from landing.
"I'm so glad you did that." Shanks murmured.
Akainu was stunned as he finally noticed Shanks' left arm, the symbols decorating the skin starting to glow. Akainu couldn't stop it as he felt the weight hitting his chest. Knocking him off of his feet and his back hitting the floor. He could only blink to see that Shanks was now looming over him, sword out and in front of him. He couldn't even move. No matter what he tried. It was like Shanks had him restrained even without moving. Without having anything to actually keep him in place.
"I'm going to put you through all the pain that you put him through." Shanks growled. He sounded almost feral. Akainu could feel his Haki flaring out, the sounds outside ceasing and quieting down as the walls started to crack under the pressure. "You took his light away from me."
"You pirates deserve the gallows." Akainu hissed.
"That doesn't matter." Shanks stated, "Your mistake was thinking you could kill him and live to see tomorrow." Akainu couldn't say a word as Shanks moved his arm, bringing his sword directly over his chest. The same place that Akainu's fist had gone through Benn Beckman. "Do you want to know what burning feels like? Burning from the inside out?" Shanks hummed, kneeling down as he surveyed Akainu's face. "One punch… one magma covered punch and it obliterated all of his internal organs. Took him from this world. Took him from me." Akainu could hear the emotion that was going through Shanks.
For a second, Akainu could recall overhearing a conversation between Sengoku and Garp. What they had said about Shanks and Benn Beckman. He gritted his teeth, watching Shanks' sword ignite into flames, burning at his skin. He hissed, feeling the pain soar over his skin. "That bastard was your lover."
"He was." Shanks whispered, "And for that… I'm going to take from you, what you took from him."
Akainu couldn't move as the sword plunged into his chest. He couldn't even say a word.
Sengoku and Garp came to mind. What they had been saying.
And they had been right.
As the sword went through his chest, he could feel it burning. Moving through his body as he felt the haki within the flames. Moving over his organs. Slowly burning him from the inside out.
"You tried to do the same to Portgas D. Ace." Shanks murmured, almost watching in satisfaction at his sword. "If it wasn't for me. He would be dead too."
"That brat will die. It might not have been Marineford, but he will face his time." Akainu hissed, "Him and that Straw Hat Luffy. Their bloodlines can't live."
"They can and they will." Shanks retorted, "Your reign of terror is over."
"Is this really how you want to end this?" Akainu questioned, grunting as Shanks twisted his sword in his chest. "You were respected by Marines, civilians, and pirates. Even being the scum of the earth. Doing this… just proves the reason why pirates belong on the scaffold with their heads being taken."
Shanks chuckled. "That Shanks is gone." Shanks' attention was grabbed as Akainu heard the door crash open and for a second, he could feel the pain stop from the Haki and his magma working to try and seal the wound he had been given.
"Red-Hair!" Sengoku.
"Don't do this, Red-Hair." Garp. "Think about Roger—"
"Bored now." Shanks murmured.
Akainu could only let out a shout of pain before everything went completely black.
