Episode 2
(Inside the Antarctica base, in a room adjoining to the control room, the time travellers stand with General Cutler, the Doctor having just explained to him the strange phenomenon that is occurring. That being the return of Earth's long-lost twin planet.)
CUTLER: That's the most fantastic story I've ever heard.
DOCTOR: I can only repeat, sir, what I have already told you. You will get visitors from that other planet.
CUTLER: Nonsense!
(Cutler strides out of the adjoining room and back into the control room.)
BEN: You serious, Doctor?
DOCTOR: Of course, I am, dear boy.
BEN: But how could they get here without us knowing?
PRINCESS: They're capable of moving an entire planet through space. I wouldn't say it's too farfetched to assume they have space ships of their own.
BEN: Oh, I see what you mean. And they'd probably be more advanced than our own, eh?
DOCTOR: Exactly. Thus, they could arrive without us knowing.
BEN: Like a scouting party.
DOCTOR: Yes, yes.
BEN: Well, shouldn't we go out and look for them?
POLLY: I hardly think the general will let us do that.
BEN: Yeah, you've got a point there, Duchess. And he's not likely to send anyone in here out to look neither.
POLLY: I'm more worried about the men he sent out to break into the Tardis.
DOCTOR: Oh, I wouldn't worry about that, my dear.
POLLY: Why not?
BEN: Yeah, it's just a wooden door.
DOCTOR: It only appears to be a wooden door, Ben. But I assure you, it's made of sturdier stuff.
PRINCESS: The only way of getting in is with the key.
DOCTOR: So, you have nothing to worry about, my child.
POLLY: Well, that's a relief.
BEN: Yeah, but we've still got the men trying to get in to get past. Knowing Cutler's type, he won't let them back in until they get into the Tardis.
PRINCESS: Yes, that does pose a problem. And things here seem to be escalating.
DOCTOR: I'm afraid at the present time, there doesn't seem to be a way out for us, my dear.
(The Princess stares at the Doctor in concern, and he sees her staring.)
DOCTOR: I'm fine, my dear, don't worry. We'll get through this, we always do.
(The Doctor puts his arm around the Princess, giving her a gentle hug. But it does little to quell the Princess' worries.)
BARCLAY: (From speakers around control room) May I have your attention, everybody. This is very important, so please listen carefully. Final orbit commencing from base reference one is four minutes, ten seconds from now. Now, we've got a very difficult job on our hands and I want everybody to be on their toes all the time. If the capsule power falls too low I shall take over re-entry from here, and for that I want the entire team behind me. Now, base reference one commencing…now.
DOCTOR: Yes, they must bring them down!
PRINCESS: Doctor, calm down.
DOCTOR: But they won't last another orbit! I must do something, I must…
(The Doctor seems confused and dazed for a moment, but then suddenly strides into the control room.)
PRINCESS: Doctor!
BEN: What's got him riled up?
PRINCESS: He's having an… He's just…He's just worried about those poor astronauts, Ben.
BEN: Come on, Princess, what's really going on?
PRINCESS: I don't–
POLLY: Yes, why's the Doctor acting so strange?
PRINCESS: It's just…old age.
POLLY: But he's never been like this before.
CUTLER: (From the control room) Get away, old man! Can't you see we're busy!
PRINCESS: Oh dear.
(The Princess, Ben and Polly hurry over to see what's happening in the control room. The Doctor and Cutler are shouting at one another, with Barclay caught between them. At the same time, three men in parkas, covered in snow, enter from the stairs.)
CUTLER: (To men) Get this man back into the other room and restrain him!
(The men who have entered do not react.)
CUTLER: (Standing up) Sergeant, that was an order! Take that man back–
(The man before Cutler removes his parka, revealing himself to the room. At the sight of it, Polly screams, and everyone stares in horror. For this is no man. It's something else entirely. A humanoid covered in a silver body suit, with only the flesh of his numb hands visible. The pipes coming in and out of his body are disturbing, as is the huge boxy chest unit, which appears to go right through him. The blank face, with only two black holes for eyes, and another for its mouth are unsettling, and the spotlight on top its head, held in place by tubes connected to where their ears ought to be, is intimidating. This is a Cyberman. The other two men remove their parkas as well, revealing they are also Cybermen.)
CUTLER: Solider!
(The soldier in the adjoining room rushes past the time travellers, his gun raised. But the nearby Cyberman removes a device from beneath its chest unit, a rectangular device with handles on either side and a giant bulb in the centre. Using both hands, the Cyberman holds up this device, aiming the bulb at the soldier. The bulb then flashes brightly, and the soldier screams as the blinding light kills him.)
POLLY: No!
(Polly rushes forward towards the dead soldier. The Princess and Ben try to grab her, but she gets away.)
PRINCESS: Polly, no, stay back!
BEN: They'll blow your head off!
(The Doctor intercepts Polly before she can get too close to the Cyberman, and the Princess and Ben hurry over to join them, the four standing together as the Cyberman's blank black circular eyes stare at them.)
CUTLER: (To Cyberman) Now look, I don't know who you are or what you are, but we've got two men in space. If we don't act now, we won't get them back alive.
(As the Cyberman speaks, its mouth opens, but it does not move as human lips do. It simply remains open as audio comes out, and then closes when the audio ceases.)
CYBERMAN: They will not return.
(The room is confused and concerned by this.)
CUTLER: Why not?
CYBERMAN: It is unimportant now.
CUTLER: But we must get them back!
(Cutler reaches for his desk, but the Cyberman blocks him with its arm and pushes him away from the desk.)
CYBERMAN: There is really no point. They could never reach Earth now.
POLLY: But don't you care?!
CYBERMAN: Care? No, why should I care?
POLLY: Because they're people and they're going to die!
CYBERMAN: I do not understand you. There are people dying all over your world, yet you do not care about them.
PRINCESS: Of course, we care about them. But we can't help those people from here.
POLLY: We can help those astronauts though.
(Polly rushes forward before any of the other time travellers can stop her. She runs up to the Cyberman who stares down at her.)
POLLY: Please, let us help them.
(The Princess and Ben grab Polly and pull her back away from the Cyberman. The Cyberman ignores her entirely however, as it then walks over to Barclay.)
CYBERMAN: (To Barclay) You will be wondering what has happened. Your astronomers must have just discovered a new planet. Is that not so?
BARCLAY: Yes, that's right.
CYBERMAN: That is where we come from. It is called Mondas.
BEN: Mondas?
BARCLAY: Mondas? But isn't that one of the ancient names of Earth?
CYBERMAN: Yes. Aeons ago the planets were twins, then we drifted away from you on a journey to the edge of space. Now we have returned.
BEN: You were right, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Not now, boy.
BARCLAY: But who or what are you?
CYBERMAN: We are called, 'Cybermen.'
BARCLAY: Cybermen?
CYBERMAN: Yes, Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak.
BARCLAY: Weak? How?
CYBERMAN: Our life span was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced.
POLLY: But that means you're not like us. You're robots!
CYBERMAN: Our brains are just like yours except that certain weaknesses have been removed.
BARCLAY: Weaknesses? What weaknesses?
CYBERMAN: You call them emotions, do you not?
PRINCESS: Emotions?
CYBERMAN: Yes.
PRINCESS: Well, I wouldn't call them a weakness.
CYBERMAN: They inhibited us from thinking logically, that makes them a weakness.
PRINCESS: But they're what allow us to live. Yes, there are times when having emotions hurts more than anything in the universe, but that pendulum can swing the other way.
CYBERMAN: Irrelevant, without emotions there is no pain.
POLLY: But then you can't experience joy, that's what the Princess is saying. And without that what's the point in living?
CYBERMAN: We live to survive, we survive to live. Emotions inhibited survival, therefore our emotions had to be removed.
POLLY: But that's horrible.
(Cutler suddenly lunges for his desk and presses a button.)
CUTLER: Ha, that'll fix you! Europe will know there's an emergency here now.
CYBERMAN: That was really most unfortunate. You should not have done that.
CUTLER: You're going to have a hard time convincing me of that, mister.
CYBERMAN: Switch on the radio and tell Europe that nothing further has happened and that all is well here.
CUTLER: I'll do no such thing.
CYBERMAN: That is an order.
CUTLER: Go take a jump!
CYBERMAN: (To Cyberman) Silence him.
(One of the other Cybermen approaches Cutler. He turns one of the dials on his chest unit, and then places his hands on Cutler's head. Immediately Cutler stiffens up, his limbs locking, then he collapses to the floor.)
DOCTOR: Have you killed that man?!
CYBERMAN: No, we have not killed him. He will recover. Now, someone must answer your commander in Europe. He is waiting.
BARCLAY: I refuse.
CYBERMAN: (To Dyson) You.
DYSON: (Frightened) Yes?
CYBERMAN: Which are the communication controls?
DYSON: (Leading the Cyberman) They're over here.
BARCLAY: Dyson!
CYBERMAN: Stand aside.
(The Cyberman pushes Dyson aside.)
BARCLAY: What are you going to do?
(The Cyberman removes its weapon from beneath its chest unit and aims it at the communications controls.)
CYBERMAN: You will see.
BARCLAY: If you destroy those we shall be unable to keep contact with the capsule!
CYBERMAN: Your commander is still waiting for your report.
DYSON: For God's sake, Barclay, do as he asks. Do you want the place destroyed?
(Barclay is hesitant for a moment…but then gives in.)
BARCLAY: All right.
(Barclay sits down at his desk and starts working the radio. As he does, the Cyberman comes up behind him, its weapon aimed at Barclay, who is very much aware of this fact.)
BARCLAY: (Into microphone) Come in, Geneva.
WIGNER: (From speaker) Snowcap. What's going on? We received an emergency from you on the microlink.
BARCLAY: It–It–It–It was a fault. We're–We're looking at it now. I'm sorry about the false alarm.
WIGNER: Where is this static coming from? We can hardly hear you, even on these bands.
BARCLAY: It–It–It, well, I–I–I think it must have been the reactor. We had the moderator rods out for a time this afternoon and–and–and, er… Well–Well that's probably it.
WIGNER: I see. Contact us if you have any further reports on this new planet.
BARCLAY: Yes, sir.
(Barclay turns off the radio, running his hand over his face as he does.)
DYSON: Well done, Barclay. Now the space capsule will have another chance.
BARCLAY: (To Cyberman) Now you must let us try and get in touch with our astronauts.
CYBERMAN: I told you it is impossible for them to get back now. The pull of Mondas is too strong.
BARCLAY: But you must let us try, please.
CYBERMAN: It is a foregone conclusion. You are wasting time. However, if you wish to contact them, I have no objection. (To Cybermen) He and his colleagues may use their equipment. Any attempt at deceit, however, kill them at once. Remove the soldier. I will carry on detail.
(One Cyberman walks past the time travellers, who are gathered together in a corner of the control room. That Cyberman then picks up the dead soldier by the legs and begins to drag him away, leaving his gun on the floor. Meanwhile, Barclay, Dyson and the other technicians resume their challenging work of getting the astronauts down safely.)
BARCLAY: (Into microphone) Snowcap to Zeus 4, come in please. Zeus 4, come in please.
WILLIAMS: (Through speaker, faint) We have you…over.
BARCLAY: Prepare to check orbital density.
WILLIAMS: Ready.
BEN: (Quietly) Right, while they're busy, we'll make a break for it, come on.
DOCTOR: Make a break for where?
BEN: The Tardis of course!
(The Doctor touches his head, as if weary or in pain.)
DOCTOR: Tardis…?
PRINCESS: Keep your voice down, Ben.
BEN: Sorry. But we've got to go now.
PRINCESS: It's too risky and too far to run.
BEN: I thought you wanted us to get out of here?
DOCTOR: The Princess is right. We don't even know how many of these…these…
PRINCESS: Cybermen.
DOCTOR: Yes. We don't even know how many these Cybermen are here in the base.
POLLY: So far, we've only seen three.
BEN: And that might be all there is!
PRINCESS: But there's an equal chance there might be more. Ben, I know you mean well, but it's just not practical, not with…
(The Princess looks at the Doctor in concern, who seems distant.)
POLLY: Besides, they'll just shoot us with those weapons of theirs, like they did the soldier.
PRINCESS: Exactly.
BEN: Well, maybe if we had a weapon of our own.
(Ben eyes the gun on the floor, left by the dead soldier. The Princess and Polly see Ben staring at it.)
PRINCESS: Ben, don't–
(Ben makes a run for the gun.)
PRINCESS: Ben!
POLLY: No, they'll see you. Ben, for goodness sake!
(As Ben picks up the gun, he makes sure it's ready to fire when–)
CYBERMAN: Stop!
(On the landing above, a Cyerbman has its weapon aimed at Ben, who has frozen.)
POLLY: No!
PRINCESS: Don't kill him, please!
(Neither the Cyberman, nor Ben fire.)
CYBERMAN: Come forward.
(Ben does as told, but keeps a tight grip on the gun.)
POLLY: Ben, drop the gun, they'll kill you.
PRINCESS: Just stay calm, Ben. Don't do anything rash.
(The Cyberman from the landing comes down the steps. The other two Cybermen have surrounded Ben, each with their weapons aimed at him. The Cyberman from the landing, clips its weapon back onto its chest unit, before approaching Ben, looming over him.)
CYBERMAN: You do not seem to take us seriously.
(The Cyberman grabs a hold of the gun in Ben's hands. Ben briefly tries to pull it back from the Cyberman.)
PRINCESS: Let it go, Ben.
(Ben lets go of the gun. The Cyberman, with its bare hands, then bends the gun, making it useless.
BEN: (Astonished) Blimey.
(The Cyberman throws away the useless weapon.)
CYBERMAN: (To other Cyberman) Take him out and look after him.
(One of the Cybermen clips its weapon back onto its chest unit. While the other covers Ben, that Cyberman goes behind him and restrains him, pulling his arms behind his back.)
POLLY: Ben…
DOCTOR: He'll be all right, my dear.
(Ben is taken out of the control room by the Cyberman.)
CYBERMAN: It is quite useless to resist us. We are stronger and more efficient than your Earth people. We must be obeyed.
PRINCESS: As long as you don't harm our friend, we'll do as you ask.
CYBERMAN: This is acceptable.
BARCLAY: We're ready to try and bring the capsule down.
CYBERMAN: Proceed if you wish, but the result will be the same.
(Barclay ignores the Cyberman and goes back to working.)
BARCLAY: (Into microphone) Snowcap to Zeus 4. Snowcap to Zeus 4, are you reading me.
SCHULTZ: (Through speaker, faint) ….reading…
BARCLAY: We're ready to begin your descent.
SCHULTZ: …minute…soon.
BARCLAY: We'll begin in exactly 60 seconds from now. Are you ready to go?
SCHULTZ: …ready.
BARCLAY: Our readings here show that you need forward correction of 7 degrees.
WILLIAMS: …checks. We'll…with attitude control…
(A moment of silence)
SCHULTZ: Snowcap…reoriented capsule…correct.
BARCLAY: Retro rockets to go in 20 seconds. After I give you the time check you'll come in on your own. Right?
WILLIAMS: Will do…
BARCLAY: Ready. 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, fire!
DYSON: They're descending!
POLLY: Does that mean they've done it?
DOCTOR: Not yet, child, not yet.
(They all watch the large radar monitor, as the blinking white dot moves further down, only to stop.)
PRINCESS: Oh, no.
POLLY: What is it, Princess?
DOCTOR: They haven't gotten far enough away from Mondas. The planet's gravitational pull is still stronger than Earth's.
POLLY: What does that mean?
PRINCESS: It's all right, Polly. They just need a little more power and they'll be able to–
WILLIAMS: (Through speaker, faint) Snowcap…Snowcap…fuel's gone! Can't…return…ideas?!
DYSON: They can't possibly re-enter now, not without any fuel.
POLLY: But there's got to be something!
PRINCESS: I'm sorry, Polly, but there's nothing we can do for them.
DOCTOR: (Pointing to radar) Look! The ship's being pulled out towards Mondas.
BARCLAY: Zeus 4, come in. Zeus 4, do you read me, over?!
(There's nothing but static from the speakers. All watch, as the white dot on the radar vanishes. Barclay, as well as many of the technicians, lowers his head shamefully. Polly looks around, confused by the fact that everyone has stopped working.)
POLLY: What's happened?
DOCTOR: I'm afraid the spaceship…exploded, my dear.
POLLY: You mean they're dead?
PRINCESS: Yes…
(Polly, upset, goes to the Princess who gives her a comforting hug.)
CYBERMAN: We told you it would be pointless, the destruction of the ship was unavoidable.
PRINCESS: Oh, be quiet!
(The Doctor slowly and carefully approaches one of the Cybermen.)
DOCTOR: I think it's about time you explained yourselves. What are you doing here, why has Mondas returned?
CYBERMAN: The energy of Mondas is nearly exhausted and now we turn to its twin and will gather energy from Earth.
POLLY: What?
DOCTOR: Gather energy?!
BARCLAY: But for how long?
CYBERMAN: Until it is all gone.
DYSON: But that means that the Earth will die!
CYBERMAN: Yes. Everything on Earth will stop.
BARCLAY: But you can't calmly stand there and tell us we're all going to die!
CYBERMAN: You are not going to die.
DOCTOR: And how are you going to stop this energy drain from Mondas?
CYBERMAN: We cannot. It is beyond our powers.
PRINCESS: What do you mean beyond your power? Is it's a natural force?
CYBERMAN: Correct. Mondas and Earth are twin planets, this means they can exchange energies. The Earth, being close to the sun, has been absorbing solar energy since its creation. Mondas, now that it is in proximity, will drain the Earth of that energy, as it did before when it first left.
DOCTOR: So, that's how life survived on Mondas, even without a sun.
CYBERMAN: Correct. Warmth and light were retained in Mondas as it moved through space without a sun. But that energy has now run out and the planet is dying, thus we have brought it back to absorb the Earth's energy.
PRINCESS: But surely it will stop once it has enough?
CYBERMAN: Yes, but the planet will need all the energy to survive. In order for it to survive, the Earth must be destroyed.
PRINCESS: But you can't just let that–!
DOCTOR: How are we going to survive?!
CYBERMAN: By coming with us.
BARCLAY: With you?!
CYBERMAN: Yes. We are going to take you all back to Mondas.
BARCLAY: But…But you can't know for certain this planet will be destroyed.
PRINCESS: If this process is about balancing energy between the two planets, then one can't be destroyed to save the other.
BARCLAY: Precisely, it just doesn't make sense.
CYBERMAN: Your understanding is not important. Our scientists have confirmed that Mondas will take all it can from the Earth, resulting in its destruction.
DYSON: Perhaps we'd prefer to take our chances here.
CYBERMAN: That is not acceptable, you must come and live with us.
POLLY: But we cannot live with you. You're–You're different. You've got no feelings.
CYBERMAN: Feelings? I do not understand that word.
DOCTOR: Emotions. Love, pride, hate, fear! Have you no emotions, sir?
CYBERMAN: Come to Mondas and you will have no need of emotions. You will become like us.
POLLY: Like you?
CYBERMAN: We have freedom from disease, protection against heat and cold, true mastery.
PRINCESS: But you can't feel anything. Not even the touch of another person.
CYBERMAN: Precisely.
PRINCESS: But what if we like to feel those things?
CYBERMAN: Illogical. Emotions and feelings result in pain inevitably, pain is not liked, therefore your statement is incorrect.
PRINCESS: But like I told you, you have to take the good with the bad. The bad might be horrible, yes, but it's what makes the good so incredible. To take away those feelings, the good and bad, even the small things. Like the touch of someone else, that physical connection you can make by holding someone's hand…
(The Princess steps forward, taking the Cyberman's hand in her own.)
PRINCESS: Can't you feel that?
CYBERMAN: I am aware of your hand, yes.
PRINCESS: But you can't feel the warmth? Don't you miss it?
(The Cyberman pulls away.)
CYBERMAN: No.
POLLY: Well, we don't want to be like that.
CYBERMAN: Then you will die.
PRINCESS: You can't be certain of that.
CYBERMAN: We are. That is why we offer you survival.
DOCTOR: But only if we become like you!
CYBERMAN: That is the only way to survive.
POLLY: And you'd just let everyone on this planet die otherwise?
CYBERMAN: Yes.
POLLY: Don't you care for anything except yourselves?!
CYBERMAN: We are equipped to survive. We are only interested in survival. Anything else is of no importance. Your deaths will not affect us.
POLLY: But can't you understand, you're condemning us all to death. Have you no heart?
CYBERMAN: No, that is one of the weaknesses that we have removed.
DOCTOR: But I see selfishness is still a strong trait within you.
CYBERMAN: Incorrect, Cybermen are not selfish, we act only to survive.
PRINCESS: Even if it means destroying others to do so.
CYBERMAN: That is survival, yes.
POLLY: Then you need a new definition for selfishness.
CUTLER: Yeah, and I've got your definition right here!
(Cutler is back on his feet, with one of the Cybermen's weapons in hand. He fires it, the light flashing brightly and killing one of the Cybermen. The other, goes to use its own weapon but Cutler fires first, as those around the Cyberman run for cover. After a flash of light, the Cyberman falls to the floor, dead.)
CUTLER: All right, get me Geneva, quick!
(Everyone is the room is stunned by what has just happened. Even so, Polly spots a familiar face on the stairs.)
POLLY: Ben.
(Ben comes over to join Polly. As he does, Polly gives him a hug which surprises him, but he still accepts it.)
CUTLER: Come on, let's have some action!
(Everyone snaps out of it and gets back to their stations and back to work.
CUTLER: (Kicking a dead Cyberman) And get rid of these things.
DOCTOR: I don't think you should have done that, General. We may have learned a very great deal.
CUTLER: Yeah, we may have lost a very great deal. Our lives!
(Cutler strides to his desk and picks up the phone.)
CUTLER: (Into phone) Put me through to the General Secretary. (To Barclay) Is Zeus 4 down yet?
BARCLAY: I'm afraid we lost them, General.
PRINCESS: Ben, are you, all right?
BEN: Yeah–Yeah…I'm fine, Princess. They didn't rough me up too bad.
POLLY: How did you escape?
BEN: I…I–I–I got the one guarding me into the room…managed to get his weapon off him…
PRINCESS: Oh, Ben.
BEN: I warned him. I begged him not to… I…I…
PRINCESS: It's okay, Ben, it's all right.
(The Princess gives Ben a supportive hug, as Ben shakes, haunted by what he's done.)
PRINCESS: I think it's time we left.
POLLY: But we can't leave now.
DOCTOR: On the contrary, now would be the prime opportunity to slip away.
POLLY: But what about the Cybermen, what about the Earth?
PRINCESS: We're of no use to these people. In fact, Ben has gone above and beyond for them.
POLLY: But this is our home.
DOCTOR: We are aware of that, my dear, but I assure you, the Earth will not be destroyed today.
POLLY: But how can you know?
DOCTOR: Well, it's all to do with what the Cyberman said earlier, about the energy Mondas needs.
POLLY: I don't understand.
DOCTOR: Well, you see, my dear–
CUTLER: All right, listen up, all of you.
(The whole room turns and listens to Cutler.)
CUTLER: I've just spoken with Secretary General. Now, while we were out of touch, they sent up another rocket to help Zeus 4 return. Now that we're operational again, we've got to help bring that rocket down.
DYSON: But won't the same thing happen again.
CUTLER: Not if I have anything to say about it, it won't.
BARCLAY: But the power loss–
CUTLER: This rocket has twice the reserves as Zeus 4 for that very reason. Now, enough chatter, get to work. Barclay, establish contact, now.
BARCLAY: Yes, sir.
CUTLER: Dyson, locate its position and trajectory.
DYSON: Right-o.
(Cutler picks up the phone again.)
CUTLER: (Into phone) Security? Major, I want the guard doubled on the main entrance. Use section 1. Yes, and section 2 to the flight exit and tracks… (Continues)
BEN: Hear that, we're going to have no chance of getting out once those guards are in place.
PRINCESS: Then we best go now, while everyone's distracted, come on.
(They go to move, when the Doctor begins to sway.)
PRINCESS: Doctor?
DOCTOR: Oh… Oh, I…I must…I must sit down…
(Before the Doctor can collapse, Ben and the Princess grab a hold of him. They then take him back into the adjoining room with Polly and sit him down.)
BEN: So much for our great escape.
PRINCESS: Doctor, is it starting?
DOCTOR: Oh, do stop going on about that.
POLLY: Is what starting, what are you talking about, Princess?
PRINCESS: We can't stay here, we have to leave, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Oh, just… Just give me a minute to…to catch my breath…
BEN: Catch your breath, what are you on about?
CUTLER: And what are you lot up to?
(Cutler enters the adjoining room.)
PRINCESS: Just staying out of your way, General.
CUTLER: See that you do, and don't even think about leaving. Pretty soon we'll have this place sealed up like a bottle. And then once we got that rocket down, we're going to have a long chat about your involvement in all this.
PRINCESS: We have nothing to do with the Cybermen, General.
CUTLER: So you say, and I'm inclined to agree. But there's something off about you and that old man, and I intend to get to the bottom of it. (To Ben) You did well, boy, to kill that soldier.
BEN: (Mournfully) I had no choice.
CUTLER: Oh, don't apologise! He's dead, isn't he?
PRINCESS: Don't listen to him, Ben.
CUTLER: And he should listen to you instead?!
PRINCESS: Haven't you got a job to do, General?!
(Cutler snarls, then goes to leave.)
POLLY: He seems to be enjoying all this.
(Cutler turns back.)
CUTLER: What's that? What's that you said?
POLLY: I said you seem to be enjoying all this.
CUTLER: Look, missy, I've got a personal stake in this emergency. That's my son up in that capsule. And you know what happened to the last one.
PRINCESS: Naturally, we all hope for your son's safe return.
CUTLER: Naturally.
PRINCESS: But nonetheless, you do seem eager to fight these Cybermen.
CUTLER: And what of it?
PRINCESS: Simply an observation, General. But I do hope that if a peaceful solution was to present itself, you'd take it.
CUTLER: And while I'm at I'll shoot down some flying pigs. These things want a fight, lady, and I aim to give them one.
TECHNICIAN: Sir!
(Cutler strides back into the control room.)
CUTLER: Yes, what is it?
TECHNICIAN: Strong signal on the early warning, unidentified.
CUTLER: Well, identify it, man!
RADAR: Yes sir, it's… There are hundreds of them, sir!
CUTLER: Hundreds of what?
(On the large radar monitor, dozens of white dots are shown coming towards Earth. The Doctor stands up, supported by the Princess as they all look.)
RADAR: Spaceships sir. In formation!
DOCTOR: It looks like you'll get your fight after all, General. But it just might be more than you bargained for…
