The Chosen One

Fool! I never asked for this! I never asked for you to love me! Why do you insist on harming yourself in my stead! You have led me to this state of bafflement. What have I done to earn such regard? I have not been kind to you. I have not encouraged you to love me. But still…you try so hard. You ask for nothing in return. You have chosen me, you say. And now I find that I cannot help but choose you.

Sorata-kun, I have fallen in love with you. I, who had thought to keep myself free from attachment, to be of service to Kamui of the Dragon of Heaven…now find that there is someone more important to me.  Nothing but duty, no one, was important to me…until you.

I will turn my back on duty. I will become someone I deplore. I will become someone you cannot love. Because I love you too much to see you die. Because I love you too much to see you sacrifice yourself that I may live.

Steadfast Sorata

            I am glad to have met you. You are beautiful to me. You pretend you have no heart, you pretend you have ice in your veins and feel nothing but determination, focus on nothing but the fulfillment of duty…you are wrong. I see the passion buried deep. I see the fire that you mistake for ice. You are cold to me, you keep everyone at a distance—but I know how much you care, how hard you suffer each time you are unable to keep someone safe.

            You would break yourself rather than hurt me. Is that the action of an unfeeling woman? Whatever you say, whatever foolish thing you are bent on doing, whatever you become, I know who you truly are. I have glimpsed your true self, and you cannot hide from me. I will not allow you to hide from me. I will not allow you to destroy yourself for any reason.

            I choose you. I love you. I will die for you. I will be happy to.

            And you are mistaken. I want one thing: I want you to live. If you care at all for me, you will live. You don't have to do anything else for me; your existence is enough. You will stay as you are. You will remain beautiful and driven, and yes, passionate. All this will make my death worthwhile.
