Chapter 1: Many Meetings

I almost dropped the message the minute I finished reading it. The Ring had returned. I closed my eyes as I remembered what I knew about the ring, and how it had taken Isildur's life. I thought the ring was lost forever, but the message I received from Lord Elrond of Rivendell shocked me. I never knew the ring would return at this time. And what great timing it was.

I planned to ride out the very next morning. I arrived at Rivendell in three hours. I knew that it must have been record time to arrive so quickly. As I entered the gates of Rivendell, I looked around for a moment. Rivendell was indeed a pretty sight. I dismounted and let the Elven servant take the reigns of my horse. I walked up the steps to the great castle and greeted Lord Elrond.

After cleaning up, I decided to explore the great elven castle. It certainly was beautiful. Looking over to my right, I stopped. Laid out in front of a statue was a broken sword. I immediately knew what that sword was.

My eyes fixated on it, I slowly approached the statue and stared down at the broken blades of the sword. I would recognize that sword anywhere.

"The shards of Narsil. The blade that cut the ring from Sauron's hand," I whispered to myself. I picked up a the hilt of the sword and inspected it. I then ran my finger along the edge and almost gasped at the small prick. I looked down to see blood oozing from the small wound the blade caused.

"Still sharp," I said to myself.

I turned to see a person I thought I would never meet again. Strider. The ranger. I stared at him for a moment, and he stared at me back with those damned eyes that could make a person tremble.

"But no more than a broken hilt," I brushed off. I put down the hilt of the sword and turned. I knew that I missed the platform with which I was supposed to put the blade and I heard the blade fall and clatter loudly onto the stone floor. I did not bother to turn to pick it back up.

I hurried out of the room, not wanting to look back. The time of the meeting Lord Elrond arranged was near.
