"Wake up,you stupid idiot!" My mother was shaking more than needed to try to wake me up. "I'm up!I'm up!" I said. She stopped and

looked down at me with her hands on her hip. "Then get out of bed or you'll miss that fool train of yours!" With that Mother turned and

left, slamming my bedroom door behind her.I groaned as I got out of bed, scratching thru my dark brown hair. "Good morning, loser."

Janet,my six year old sister greeted me. "Shutup.." I mumbled, shoving her out of my way.She didn't fight back, she never did after I had

twisted her arm and given her a rash, but she glared just the same.I walked thru the kitchen, seeing my mother working at the stove. She

was dressed as a muggle - we couldn't any of those fancy robes.I sat down at the kitchen table, still half asleep.Janet followed me

in,her long black hair swishing furiously with her long and prideful strides. She sat at the opposite end of the table and sneered at me.

"You goin' to that stupid school today?" She knew I was going to Hogwarts, but she knew I hated school and she decided to rub it in.

"Shutup." I growled at her as Mother came in and slammed a plate on the table in front of me. "Shutup, the both of ya." She said and

stormed back into the kitchen.I ignored Janet's second sneer and looked down at my plate. It was full of mostly runny eggs, but today

Mother added a piece of toast. It would be the biggest breakfast I'd had for a year or so.But I wasn't very hungry that morning.I took a

a bite of the burnt toast and shoved the plate forward. The old table creaked under the weight of the plate, but surprisingly enough the top

left table leg didn't collapse this morning. "I went into Diagon Alley yesterday.." Mother said, coming in with an old carpet bag.She

dropped it on my lap. "I hope you know you're going to run us poor with your school supplies." I stayed silent and opened the bag to

have a look inside. As I was rummaging thru the second-hand items I didn't feel guilty at all - we were already poor anyway.Mother

paused,as if she were expecting a thank you, then went back into the kitchen. "I hope you have a ride to the train station." She

called from the kitchen. "'Cause I ain't taking you down there." I looked over my train ticket and put it in my pocket.

"I'm getting a ride from Dan.." I muttered as I stood up,hearing a car horn sound from outisde.

"Don't you dare think of coming home for Christmas." Mother called.

"I won't!Why would I anyway?" I mumbled as I headed for the door.

"Goodbye,Twit." Janet said, standing in front of the door.

"Until we meet again,Loser." I pushed her out of the way and opened the door.Dan's mother was waving

from the car (muggles like to call them Volvos I suppose) and Dan was seated in the back.I started to

step out when I heard a deep, "Come here,Boy" from the living room.I motioned to Dan that I would be just

a moment and a went into the living room.Father was seated in the corner, smoking a cigar.

"Yes?" I asked,standing there impatiently.

"I said Come 'ere."

I hesitantly strode closer to Father. "Yes?" I repeated.

"You goin' to that school of yer's today?"

"Yes.." I answered, figuring he had forgotten and would hit me for it-like yesterday.

He sat there silently for a moment, "Boy,I want you to know something."

I leaned in,listening intently. He never wanted me to know something.

"Women are trash. They ain't worth nothin'.I know you're young to care for girls, but you remember that boy,

you remember."

I blinked, that was the last thing I expected Father to tell me.I didn't agree with him,but if I

said so he would serve up a knuckle-sandwich right there.I just nodded silently.

"Get outta here,Boy."

I turned and left, dodging his cigar he had thrown at me on my way out.
